Glossy, thin and large two
As with the other "Eyewitness" books on various subjects, this book is also endowded with outstanding photography. The information is still minimal and based on the more popular material most folks are familiar with with the Native American. A good starter book for the yonger reader looking for some information on our American Natives............

A Detailed, Beutiful Book
North American Indian, a part of the Eyewitness Books series, is an excellent book. On each page, there are four or five stunning pictures with captions that explain the different elements of the pictures perfectly. The book includes descriptons of all sorts of different aspects of a North American Indian's life. It shows artwork done by several different tribes. The book also gives a history of all the different North American Indian tribes. It is a great book for an artist interested in the intricate art of the North American Indians, or a student looking for facts about the people. North American Indian is a wonderful all-around book; it is truly a great read!

COURAGE
I HAVE JUST FINISHED READING THE NARRATIVE OF DAVID CROCKETT FOR AN AMERICAN HISTORY CLASS AND HAVE TO DO A SHORT THREE PAGE PAPER ON THE BOOK. I WAS HOPING TO GET SOME IDEAS ON THE INTERNET TO HELP OUT WITH THE PAPER, AND SAW THIS LINK. THE BOOK WAS GREAT, EASY READING, AND INTERESTING TO THE READER, MYSELF. HOPE YOU ALL ENJOYED IT AS WELL AS I DID!

David Crockett, a review
It is a great book, a real whopper. And I'll be skinned alive and burned by an injun if it aint one of the moost enthralling books I've read. Colonel Crockett didn't have the greatest spelling, or punctuation, but it was a great book. In the 1830's, Edgar Allan Poe wrote a review of the book, criticizing its grammar, but what he forgot to say was how it was exciting, and easy to read. At the time, it was the bestselling book in the nation.

Good but a little abbreviated
I'm going to be a first-time Eastern Europe traveler this summer. However, I have travelled extensively and one of the first things I look for in a travel book is a book that offers information on all aspects of a country. For example, I felt the information on countries like Yugoslavia and Macedonia was a little abbreviated. There are some people out there who would actually like to do an "off-the-beaten-path" trip in those countries and Lonely Planet wasn't able to help me plan for this. The information on Greece was definitely helpful, but for those who plan to travel on their islands, I'd recommend Lonely Planet's Greek Islands which had exactly the right amount of information I needed to make my travels there worthwhile!

Abbreviated, but good.
We purchased this book before going to three of the countries covered, because there are so few books that cover Eastern Europe as a whole.

Although the information was limited, we found it helpful in general terms. It also whetted my appetite for going to the other countries in the book!

Indispensable book for a beautiful region
I can only speak for the Yugoslav section in this book, since it is the country I am most acquainted with.
Generally speaking, the LP team did an excellent job researching Beograd, but information on the rest of the country is poor. They don't mention a thing about Serbian institutions like Studenica monastery; they omit everything about the Fruska Gora and there's not even a word on the charming town of Sremski Karlovci.
I wonder whether the information on the other countries is equally poor. If that is the case, I'd rather tour the region on my own without any book at all.
However, one improvement with respect to the previous edition is they are now including Kotor (But Ulcinj is not so much recommended as before, which I don't know why since the beaches are much better than in Budva).
With regards to Novi Sad, their suggestions are very poor, even in what concerns to lodging. My recommendations are: add the Fruska Gora, Srem Karlovci, Raska and probably Nis.

good ideas - adjust them and use them!
Two Important Points:

1. Vocabulary... Nightmares of GRE takers, especially if English is not your native language... And even if it is...:-)
O.k., this book is indeed much better than, say, Barron's Verbal section in this way:
the authors use an innovative approach to the crucial but often neglected because the time lacks,- part of GRE Verbal - vocabulary lists. Even though you decide not to buy this one, apply this tactic: design your own WORD CATEGORIES - and you WILL NOT forget those words.

List words you don't know on a sheet of paper in two colomns, each having a meaning opposite to another (HESITATE : ACT QUICKLY, for exemple. Hesitate: Dither, Falter, Waver, Luggard...; Act Quickly:Apace,Impetuous, Precipitate etc..).
More possible groupings:
RUDENESS : POLITENESS
SMART: STUPID
WAR: PEACE
MAN MADE : NATURE MADE
.....

Working so will make ANTONYMS section of the GRE a piece of cake, and, for sure, will boost your ANALOGIES score.(cause what do you think you were doing, making up your word groups? Preparing indirectly for exactly those GRE sections:-)

This book presents the vocab in exactly this manner. The only disadvantage is that they give a limited number of words. As for me, I had to complete the categories they suggested with words taken from "Barron's: How to Prepare For the GRE" 3,500 word list.

2. As for helpful techniques for specific GRE VERBAl sections, the book is fraught with very efficient hints. I Highly recommend it, really.

Good luck on the test!

Solid Preparation - It can be amusing too...)))

Success!
I myself am not one who tests well. I am the person who chokes from test anxiety. I was applying to grad school as an English Major, knowing that the most important score for me, on the GRE, was the verbal score. Conscious of my test-taking history, I purchased the book in an attempt to subdue apprehension and buttress my confidence. Having taken the test, and scoring 200 points higher than I had expected, I would advise anyone who relates to test anxiety to sacrifice the money and buy the book. Follow the advice it gives and it will prove to be your advocate.

Good things in small packages
This is a POWERFUL book. A good, quick read from some of our premier modern-day American historians. This collection of essays gives us an inside look at most of the presidencies of the second half of the 20th century. A must read for any history buff.

Experts discuss the use of power by U.S. presidents
• Edmund Morris - Last fall, Morris published the controversial biography Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan. His book The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt earned him a Pulitzer Prize.

• Ben Bradlee - Author of That Special Grace, a tribute to John F. Kennedy, Bradlee is a vice president at the Washington Post. He previously was the executive editor at the Post who oversaw reporting of the Watergate scandal.

• David Maraniss - A reporter at the Washington Post since 1977, Maraniss earned a Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for his coverage of Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign. He subsequently wrote the Clinton biography, First in his Class. His latest book is When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi.

The "Power and the Presidency" series was created on behalf of the Montgomery Endowment by alumnus Robert A. Wilson of Dallas, a communications consultant who put together a similar series, "Character Above All" (dealing with the impact of character on presidential leadership) in 1994 at the University of Texas at Austin.

A little gem of a book, Indeed!
These well written essays provide vivid glimpses of varying Presidential personalities, with thoughtful discussion of individual strengths and weaknesses. To me, especially in an election year where character is a major issue, it was an enthralling read, with highlights of qualities such as "Reagan's voice, which was a large part of Reagan's power..." or the speaking style of TR, with plosive P sounds, which "would pop with Gatling-gun force. The effect of his oratory was to bury every word in the psyche of his listeners." or the political genius exhibited by FDR who talked "at a level at which very few people could follow him and understand what he was really saying" that FDR also recognized in a young congressmen, LBJ, as "he saw Johnson understood _everything_ he was talking about." I enjoyed reading these examples of behavior and the illuminating contrasts such as: "It is hard to imagine two more different men than Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy..." or "despite the major differences in their temperaments--indeed, I would argue, because of these differences--Eleanor and Franklin forged their historic partnership..." I would recommend to readers the book "Presidential Temperament" by Choiniere and Keirsey, another well researched volume which gives an explanation of "how each President's temperament inevitably expressed itself in his behavior, both in office and in his personal life."

More than just a travel guide
The Tahiti Handbook is an excellent book. My wife and I traveled only on Moorea and Bora Bora, but I found the historical/political/sociological sections on the Cooks, on the French nuclear testing, and on the cultural history of the other islands absolutely fascinating and enlightening, something I never would have expected in a travel book. They certainly gave me some much needed perspective to appreciate current day French Polynesia.

We found the information on sights, accomodations, restaurants, and even prices to be mostly very accurate for the two islands we spent time on, and there is no question in my mind that we would have missed a lot that was just beyond the corner of our vision if it hadn't been for the book.

I'll be looking for a book by David Stanley the next time we set out for an exotic destination.

A very comprehensive, readable and accurate guidebook.
David Stanley has covered the Pacific Islands for a long time with his various guidebooks. He continues doing an incredible job with his latest Tahiti Handbook. This is a very comprehensive, readable and accurate guidebook on travel through Tahiti and the islands of French Polynesia plus the Cook Islands and Easter Island. This books covers a huge chunk of Polynesia and it does it well. The 140 pages of intro material, important background and travel info is very useful. First-time South Pacific visitors intending stops in Tahiti, the Cooks and/or Easter Island will find this book essential. It's well-organized, easy-to-read, has great maps and interesting historic and contemporary photos. Knowing a bit about the complexities and problems associated with travel between and among these far-flung islands, I think the indepth coverage says much about Stanley's journalistic skills and diligence in collecting information and presenting it in a practical, useful manner. He covers just about everything necessary to know about travel through Tahiti and related island groups, the Cook Islands and Easter Island. There is a very useful resources listings as well with website/internet sources, bibliography, glossary, an Islands at a Glance vital stats table, accommodation and subject indexes, etc. You won't need any other book to travel easily, comfortably and intelligently through these islands.

A reason to visit French Polynesia
High prices in Tahiti and the other islands of "French Polynesia" forced me to choose other destinations in the South Pacific so far. Reading Stanley's book, however, I found out that even in these islands there must be good and inexpensive places to stay. As a user of other books by David Stanley I do not fear to rely on his findings. Stanley's remarks are based on personal experiences as a traveller rather than on deals wih tourist agencies, hotels, and so on. Besides, his personal involvement with and love for the people in the Pacific favors his book to similar publications by other authors. You do not need to agree with all his political and other statements, but I personally appreciate that Stanley does not present only the sunny sides of life in the area. He also dares to point at the darker sides as well. This enables me to arrive in a country with a more balanced view of it and its society, rather than only the perspectives given in the more general tourist brochures and travel books.

Not as thorough as they make you believe...
This dictionary is definitely for the layman's theologian. For those of a somewhat firm grasp of theological terminologies, you're better off sticking with a standard merriam-webster collegiate abridgement, or a larger, deeper theological dictionary. This dictionary is probably for the novice, or beginning student of theology or philosophy. There are many terms NOT included in this dictionary that I find often in theological studies that you'd think would be included. Where's the entry for "semiotics"? Where's the entry for "cosmogony"? Or how about "bibliomancy"? This book is very small, so at least they don't mislead you about its size. There are other theological dictionaries which have better application for the theology student/scholar in mind.

I suggest picking up Westminster's Dictionary of Theological Terminology by McKim for a more complete dictionary.

great choice for laymen and students.
For an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny book it sure goes a long way in helping you understand the most common (yet curious) terms that you encounter in theological books and articles. For those laymen who may feel just a little embarrassed when your friends come over and see an encyclopedia length dictionary of theological terms on the shelf next to your Bible when they know that you still get confused between Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1, this may be the book for you. It also has the distinct advantage of not requiring a day's wages in order to obtain it. A great value. Get it while it is still in the single digits.

Pocket Full of Theology
I have several theology dictionaries which are helpful, but none give such pithy definitions. The definitions are short and to the point, without giving a lot of parallel information. Sometimes you just need a simple definition, not one that is pages long. This book does just that. I found that, while being short, each definition does not limit the meaning of the word too much. There is a good balance between giving open definitions and ones that still mean something. A most helpful resource that I use often.

samoan language
i would like to order a book that is telling all old samoan stories and customs and the faasamoa in the samoan language..

Tonga & Samoa in one book
I used the Moon guidebook to Tonga and Samoa during a 3 1/2 week trip to the South Pacific in early 2001. I found the book very useful because it covers Tonga and Samoa in one condensed book. There are enough details to travel on both island groups for a couple of weeks and not missing information in this great guidebook. The book is still quite accurate there is enough details for each spot you will visit on your trip. In general this book has helped me a lot to find my way around the islands with detailed maps and a wide range of unbiased information.

Finally - a practical guide to Tonga
As president of Sea for Yourself snorkeling tours, I'm obligated on behalf of my clients, to stay informed about the destinations we visit. Although we've been operating programs in Tonga for many years that allow snorkelers to actually swim with humpback whales, we keep a copy of David's Tonga/Samoa Handbook in the office in order to answer questions from clients about areas other than Tonga. In addition to Tonga, this book has extensive coverage of Samoa, American Samoa, and Niue.

In this book, the reader will find all the practical info (that continues to distinguish all of David's books) including travel tips, accommodations, meals, etc. I also appreciate the special attention given to cultural background, political and economic elements, and particular vignettes (such as the explanations of coral reef ecology and the palolo worm). However, the sections I personally find most useful include the pages on Internet sites, email addresses, and the bibliography.

I started using David's books (South Pacific Handbook) in 1982, and they have always been valuable and trusted travel companions. We always take this book with us on our programs to Tonga because it makes a useful reference for both staff and participants. Plus, since this book is easily available, I'm always happy to refer our clients to David's Tonga/Samoa Handbook when they are seeking to purchase a single accurate source of both practical and background information about this section of the Pacific.

Exciting debut
Interestingly, Brian Bain's THE EIGHTH METHOD was one of the first books I scanned while trying to decide if I wanted to take the self-publishing plunge. I guess the fact that I went on to publish with iUniverse is a testament to Bain's writing.

THE EIGHTH METHOD introduces us to Dr. Stanley Highstreet, a brilliant but self-effacing physicist with an interest in psychic phenomena. Highstreet bears some resemblance to the eccentric master detective Nero Wolfe, and like Wolfe, Dr. Highstreet has an associate, an Archie Goodwin by the name of Zetrower Hill.

Zet, a Sacramento PI, serves as our narrator in the first book of the series: the investigation of the ghostly ringing of ship bells from the doomed RMS Lusitania . Standard poltergeist gig, thinks Zet, except...these dinner bells are only copies. Fakes. He decides to videotape the 'poltergeist' in action, never dreaming what he finds will uncover a fifty-five year old society murder.

Two things immediately struck me as I thumbed through THE EIGHTH METHOD. First, length: the contemporary mystery weighs in, on average, at about 60,000 words. THE EIGHTH METHOD, at 138 pages, is modeled on the leaner, plot-focused detective novels of the 30's and 40's. Secondly, eccentric master sleuths have gone out of fashion with New York publishers (though not with readers, who continue to gobble up golden age mysteries as though they were...er...going out of style). These two facts alone illustrate what makes iUniverse an exiting choice for writers who have the guts to break formula. Tired of not getting what he felt was a fair reading, Bain took the initiative and went into partnership with iUniverse.

Brian Bain is not alone in choosing to write for himself as well as a targeted demographic (which may or may not exist entirely in the minds of publishing "suits"). Every day the number of books on the cyber shelves of the iUniverse Bookstore multiply, offering greater choice for writers and readers.

As for THE EIGHTH METHOD, Bain writes capably, displaying an affection and appreciation for the traditional school of mystery writing. Does the market still exist for cerebral great detectives, their tough guy lieutenants, and a roomful of colorful suspects quizzed to the point of confession? With the help of iUniverse, Brian Bain is about to find out.

a good, old fashioned mystery
The Eighth Method is a classic mystery in (and for) modern times. A super-inteligent paranormal investigator and his private detective friend (who also narrates)investigate a haunted historical artifact...or is it? And that's just one of the puzzles our sleuths must solve. Two mysterious deaths and the question "How many methods are there to kill someone with a book?" also require solutions. While I would have liked to get to know Dr. Highstreet and Zet (not to mention the other members of his detective agency) a bit more, I found the book a fun, fast moving read. The plot twists kept me guessing and the characters are more than a modern Holmes and Watson. Enjoy!

Looking Forward to More
Fresh and off-beat, The Eighth Method has much to recommend it: interesting characters and an engaging plot with unexpected but believable twists. The clues are subtle but play fair with the reader and make for a story that is paradoxically both fey and logical. It savors of Christie and Stout without being a mere stylistic rehash and does what any good read should - leaves one eager for more. The good doctor and his slightly eccentric circle are grand company in the old tradition!

A Look at a Sad Man
If you are interested in how the Nixon and his staff handled the Watergate issue then this is a wonderful look into the private conversations that took place. The author does a good job of setting most of the conversations up with comments as to what the conversation covers. There are also some explanations at the beginnings of the major areas of the book. I would have preferred a little bit more editing out of some of the conversations, but they do serve a point in the overall book.

What struck me the most was just how desperate Nixon kept getting. I almost started to think that maybe he even believed the lies he was telling. It was so fascinating to see how he would formulate a "cover" story and then keep presenting it to staff to see if they would replace their understanding of the events with his. What is sad is the amount of denial that Nixon was sliding into at the end. He was justifying his actions so hard, I started to think that he was trying to change reality with his force of will.

Many of the conversations are very revealing and interesting. I wonder if at times Nixon forgot he was being taped? Why would anyone think that what he was up to would stand the test of time and be thought of as acceptable behavior. You get a good understanding of why Nixon and his family fought so hard to keep the tapes private. In my opinion, these tapes have set back all the work Nixon did after leaving office to rebuild his reputation. My only warring would be that this should not be the first or only book on Watergate that you read. It will help you if have read something else to give you some back ground on the conversations. Overall the book is interesting and a good addition to your Nixon collection.

Masterful Logic Leads Astray
A fine addition to any Watergate library. Kutler is a dazzling professor who often turns fine logic and thinking to the wrong conclusions. As a litigation historian he can shed copius amounts of illumination onto America's law. However, the fine paths which are followed by Kutler often lead to the wrong conclusion. He has made brilliant arguments for the separation of church and state which in the end only elegantly confirm the opposite conclusion. Our high law not only encourages religous affiliations in civic life, but that government cannot in fact prohibit this free exercise of religion by not only any individual, state, judge or other federal official but by even the federal government itself. It is always a joy to consume a Kutler premise, but even more enjoyable to find the true conclusions.

A New Insight Into History
If you are interested in how Nixon and his staff handled the Watergate issue, then the book Abuse of Power: The New Nixon Tapes by, Stanley Kutler is a great one to read. Kutler does a great job of setting the private conversations up with comments as to what they cover. He also gives some explanations at the beginning of the major areas of the book. I was happy that they did not edit much of the conversations that took place because they serve a good point in the overall book.
