A Must-Have for "Outsider" musicians
As the first chapter suggests, we're all outsiders...Puerto Ricans playing Cuban rhythms, Cuban players playing jazz, white guys arranging Latin dance music and Latin Jazz...the book at times is hard to read, owing to my lack of proficiency in reading music; however, for anyone who is reasonably well versed in sight reading the excerpts are short...the chapters on percussion are extremely easy to read--even for the "non-reader"...and uncertainties are cleared up by listening to the accompanying CD, which has patterns that lend insight into the intricacies of Latin music. The book makes a convincing case that there is room for an academic approach in understanding salsa, while making it equally clear that there are shortcomings as well. Well done.

Shopping Town USA: The Planning of Shopping Centers

a must-have for architecture and mall fanatics
"Shopping Town USA: The Planning of Shopping Centers" is the definative collection of architect and planner Victor Gruen's shopping center projects. Widely considered to be the father of the modern shopping center, Gruen's work shows an attempt at understanding suburban America's social and econaomic habits at a time when the whole concept of suburban city living was still in its infancy. His studies produced susch masterworks as Southdale Shopping Center in Edina, Minnesota, the first enclosed mall in America, and Cherry Hill Center outside Philadelphia, still one of America's most successful malls. The book is over four decades old, as of this writing, but it is still relevant because the ideas are still being used today. If you can find this book, and love malls and architecture as I do, buy it without hesitation

just what the doctor ordered
i'm not going to write too much, as this is an out of print book.

i actully bought it on sale at amazon, not knowing why. t the time i bought it, it was an interesting title at a reduced price. so i bought it. and it sat on my shelf for two years.

then, my husband was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and was told he would never get better, that he would have to live this way the rest of his life. then the stress started.

without getting goopy, i'll just say that it was the key that saved us. we were yelling and screaming at each other, talking about divorce, and being as ugly as we could to one another. this book helped me pull it together and gave clear steps as to what to do.

the idea i liked the best was that your marriage is a career and needs the attention and focus that career needs.

i don't want to ramble on, just want to say this book saved our marriage. and thanks to the authors!

Synagogue Song in America (Performance in World Music Series, No 4)

$56 asked for used copy outrageous, but book's worth it!
....

Noted author and scholar Rabbi Jacob Neusner wrote, "this book brings to synagogue song the discipline of the musician, the learning of the scholar, but most important, the aesthetic sense of the pious person who serves God in the beauty of holiness. Teaching us what has been and what can be, Levine promises to turn what is into something better:musically a service to God through aesthetic beauty consonant with the musical tradition of Judaism. A book of enormous value to the life of Judaism today."

In addition to giving Jews everywhere a key to unlock the secrets of their traditional chant, the book is also a practical guide to one branch of a universal musical tradition: liturgical chant. It's a must read for anyone interested in what makes the cantorial art so compelling to listeners and so important to worship.

up to date collection of articles
This is one of the latest collections of papers dealing with the global spread of English and thus offers some interesting papers by the most notable scholars in the field. Particularly interesting is Kachru's collection of resources for teaching and research which I used extensively for my own work.

Solid pacing and characterization
The strength of this book is the writing. Larry Young takes the wonder that naturally is (and should be) associated with space travel and a crisp action-adventure plot and uses them to frame some very well-done character studies. This is a fun book, and a thoughtful book, and one that makes me hope against hope that broadcasting live from the moon won't always be just the stuff of fiction.

Read this book!
On of the best stories I've read in along time. Larry Young does an excellent job of creating interesting characters and binding them to a well written story. You can tell the love that Larry has for the subject material it shows in the detail he uses and the plans he's created. His sense of dialog is great. This is the kind of book that makes you want to see man go to the Moon again.

A Great story with excellent art. Highly recommended.

No cows were hurt in the making of this movie.
There have been some great films about the Moon, even one with Doris Day. But let's face it no-one can afford the big budget to make them totally believable. But in comics such adventures can be told for only a fraction of the budget. And all of the action.

If you are a person who "does not like comics" then this book is what you are missing. Great story-telling by the writer and artists and exciting adventure for the characters. It is an excellent introduction to the medium, because you'll recognise the style from your Bruce Willis adventure movies or your Buck Rogers serials.

This is a yarn about one of the world's richest men, an investigative TV reporting trio and conspiracies ranging from the mob to big business (not far, I know).

It contains one of the best visual puns you will ever see in a Space adventure. There is a clue in this review.

Disappointed in Colorado
Be forewarned. This book expresses very little original thought and is merely a collection of "other peoples" articles. This provides for very little logical flow for someone wanting to apply RUP. Where are the examples, tips of the trade, and how-to's?

Shame on me for not having gone to the book store first to look at the book as the online description gives no indication that it was in a periodical format.

I expected more from Scott after having read is other great "original thought" books.

The RUP would be RIP without this book series
The guy from Toronto got it right. This is a great book that collects really good articles written by some of my favorite writers. I first read the Construction Phase book then quickly bought this book and the Inception phase book and have found all three to be valuable. My company is trying to implement the RUP right now and struggled because there was clearly some missing techniques. This book series presents a lot of what is missing in the RUP, and it really helped us to fill in a lot of the missing stuff. Too bad Ambler and Constantine don't work for Rational.

The RUP would be RIP without this book
This is a really great book. It goes into detail about an improved version of the lifecycle for the Unified Process, one that actually addresses the real world needs of most companies. Trying to use the RUP on multiple projects? Trying to have a common architecture between them? Worried about integrating with your legacy systems? This book covers these topics and more with some of the best articles ever published in Software Development magazine. I'm really into some of the philosophies of XP and as a result really liked the chapter on testing which presents a wide range of testing techniques and strategies. The A&D chapter included a really great article about distributed object design by Scott Ambler and one about Java interface design by Peter Coad, two topics critical for EJB development IMHO. The business modeling chapter was excellent, covering essential modeling, business rules, and a great UML article by Martin Fowler. It's amazing how this book collects some of the best material written by the best minds in the computer industry.

Personally, I can't imagine anyone adopting the RUP without first reading this book series. I think it's great that someone has gone to the effort to sort through the best articles written by some of the best minds in this industry. Kudos to Ambler and Constantine for having the courage to stand up and say what many others have been afraid to.

Okay but...
The book is funny and quite helpful - nice material for review purposes. BUT, its merely a supplement to formal statistics study. You must have some working knowledge of the basic concepts.

I recommend BUSINESS STATISTICS (By Ken Black). He explains the concepts quite extensively. This book coupled with the humor of the Cartoon Guide will make Statistics a little but more bearable (especially for non-math majors like me:)

Excellent suppliment to dry statistics books
This book was included in the materials for a business statistics class at Anderson. Bogged down by the reading from the course book and study guide, I didn't even open the cartoon guide for weeks, thinking it was probably too dumbed down to be helpful. Was I ever wrong. Concepts that were very difficult to understand in the course book were elucidated by the excellent examples and explanations in this guide. Made reviewing general concepts for the final exam much easier as well.

This book won't help you much in the practical application of statistics (for that you need problem sets), but will certainly aid in understanding the general ideas behind the math.

GREAT BOOK (covers probability theory painlessly & well)
Probability theory (uncertainty, error estimates, confidence intervals, "p-values" and the like) take time to understand, and rigorous approaches fail to get the concepts across to the non-mathemetician.

Gonick & Woolcott's Cartoon Guide to Statistics gets the ideas across with a minimum of math, and a maximum of "common sense" & (dare I say it?) intuition. The reader get's a FEEL for Probability and Statistics without violating the rigorous underpinnings of statistical theory.

I've taught Statistics to undergrad and grad students, and have had to teach into stats to Grad Students in 7 week Summer short courses, and I required everybody to buy exactly the same statistics calculator (one of the TI models with a couple chapters devoted to the mechanics of "doing statistics"), Cliff Notes _Statistics_, Darryl Huff's _How_to_Lie_With_Statistics_ (a classic cartoon guide I read decades ago) and Gonick's _Cartoon_Guide_to_Statistics_.

The 4 paperbacks (including the book that comes with the TI calculator) complement each other very well.

If you want to learn Statistics, without the standard Sadistics, I recommend Cliff, Huff, T.I. & Gonick. Enjoy!
