"Must" reading for the legions of Dylan and Springsteen fans
Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, And American Song is a combination dual biography and musical critique of two great and much beloved modern-day American songwriters and performers. Their distinct flavors, creative drives, and musical works are discussed in detail and contrasted in depth throughout the pages of this respectful, informative, and thoughtfully presented commentary. Simply put, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, And American is "must" reading for the legions of Dylan and Springsteen fans, and a very highly recommended addition to academic and community library American Music History collections.

Drum Gahu!: A Systematic Method for an African Percussion Piece
Published in Paperback by White Cliffs Media Co (1991)
Authors: David Locke and Larry W. Smith
Amazon base price: $25.95
Average review score:

For both the player and the scholar
Drum Gahu is another marvel produced by the leader of Ewe drumming in this country, David Locke. Locke systematicly takes the reader through the patterns, playing techniques, and descriptions of each instrument; the bell, the rattle, kagan, kidi, sogo, and the master drum. In addition, he provides the reader with execises for the playing of these instruments. The text is easy to read, but the musical notation is a bit small. I highly recommend buying the Drum Gahu tapes that are available. The tapes are of Locke performing most of the musical examples in the book. It also has an excerpt of Gahu being performed in Africa; the real thing! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about Ewe drumming, and to anyone interested in learning to play Gahu.

Expanded "Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith."
My first thought was that this book was a one-volume version of Histroy of the Church!
Unike "Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith," which is a collection of Joseph Smith's talks, "EJST" is a topical "quote book" compilation of Joseph Smith's teachings. The good is that it is easier to find what Joseph Smith said on a subject. The bad is that the context and the flow of the Prophet's logic is lost, so I use this book in conjuction with "Teachings." For example: the King Follet Discourse gets pretty hacked up by ellipses, But that is the hazard of having a "quote book," along with having someone else do your editing for you.

Some of the extras that are included in this book are eight accounts of the First Vision, and the poetic version of Section 76-"The Vision." The Editors also include reminisces from "They Knew the Prophet," and quotes from Journal of Discourses, when Church leaders quoted something the Prophet said that is not recoded elswhere. It is wonderful to see these gems get broader circulation, and hopefully, they will begin to percolate into our Sunday Schoool lessons and into our lives.

The biggest compliment that I have is that I teach Sunday School lessons with this book.

My only complaint is that there were some reminisces found in "Discourses of Wilford Woodruff," and one or two other quotes from Joseph Smith that would have been nice to include in the book. And it would have been nice to see the Wentworth letter in an appendix. But it is a thick enough book as it is.

Despite my one or two criticsms, this is a great book. Five stars!

An extraordinary insight into law firm marketing process
In a realm of law firm marketing literature that so often fails to understand the unique qualities of the legal profession and how lawyers relate to their markets, this book goes more deeply and intelligently into the mindset of corporations and how they purchase legal services. Where most marketing books go into the mechanics of the marketing process and miss the point about the subtleties of the process, Smith goes to the core of the process with a kind of sophistication rarely seen in law firm marketing literature. This book is essential to every law firm that wants to understand its markets and how people buy their services.

The man behind the bookstore that launched 1000 poets!
What can you say to a young person who wants to write? How about "Give a Reading!" If City Lights did not exist, there would be one very small list of titles coming out of San Francisco. I don't say that everyone that has gone to North Beach has eventually become a published author...but...when you even have a movie; like that of the Keefer Sutherland & "Captain America" (Easy Rider )which ends ( "starts-off") at The CITY LIGHTS BOOKSTORE in San Francisco, and Dennis Hopper is the "Beat" who finally makes it; it is a tribute, and should inspire the younger artists to give it a try-and tell all the "wiser" Bohemians to give it "another try!" Read the stuff from the guy that supported all the other struggling voices, and breath easy.

Literature about work that really works
This collection from Bottom Dog Press is excellent for anyone who's been looking for a good college-text to get students talking about literature and work. In these stories, students will find their fathers, mothers, uncles, aunts, and even themselves. Literature about work provides a rich opportunity for discussion and learning, and this book is definetely rich in its potential. Bret Comar's story is especially breath-taking.
