Shadow and Substance
I would recommend the biography of W. Eugene Smith, Shadow and Substance: The Life and Work of an American Photographer to anyone interested in the life and times of this photographer. I felt that the author drew a picture of a driven, artist who had a sense of public right and wrong. From this book, I learned that whether or not he led a life that I would want my children to emulate, his sense of outrage towards social injustices were larger than his personal being. And, he presented his stories "up close" and personal. After reading the book, the photo essays became even more revolutionary and engaging. Smith becomes real. Enjoy.

lots of facts, little analysis
if you're looking for a more in-depth analysis, you might want to look elsewhere, but for straightforward facts about Lynch films, this is a great guide. it systematically goes through a series of catagories (cast/crew, production history, cut scenes, etc. ; also some weirder catagories like "deja vu," "apocrypha,"- all of these lend to a greater understanding of the material in lynch's films) this ultimately ended up being the most helpful book on lynch I read, if only because it made finding actual facts about each subject really easy

Well worth the purchase price -- useful and entertaining.
Hughes' book is an indispensable addition to the bookshelf of the recent Lynch initiate, casual fan, or long-time follower of Lynch's career and work. Even trivia magnets will find numerous new and fascinating facts and anecdotes.

This is the rare book that can be used either as a career overview, reference work, or just a worthwhile, enjoyable read. The book is divided into sections, one for each work up to and including Mulholland Drive [not only film and TV works] and each is subdivided into categories such as trivia, cut scenes, availability, Lynch Mob (reappearances of members of Lynch's stable of frequent collaborators), or Lynch's own comments on each work. The index is very thorough as well, so the book can be enjoyed non-chronologically in bite-size pieces if desired.

Hughes has gone to the horse's mouth for many of the relevant facts and observances, having interviewed Lynch himself and many who work with him. The book is well-stocked with information, opinion and analysis without coming across as dry or pedantic. I'm very glad I picked it up.

Not nebulous and overly general like some works about Lynch, or a collection of the opinions of one writer like some others, Hughes' book should be purchased and read by anyone with an interest in the work of David Lynch,or in the wide-ranging, well-rounded and fascinating man himself.

3 thumbs up. Buy and keep near TV.

The Complete Book For The Complete Lynch Fan
Let me start off by saying that this review may be a little prejudiced. I helped David Hughes collect some of the movies and info for the book, and became buddies with him in the process. However, all that aside this is a great book. Rather than being culled from "found" interviews and information, slopped together with a little psychoanalysis and fanfare, David has based his book on three things 1) an obsessive love of all things Lynchian, 2) an obsessive **knowledge** of all things Lynchian, and 3) a personal meeting with Mr. Lynch himself, which allowed this book to have interviews, quotes, opinions, etc. from the man himself that no other source in the world has.
In addition to being the ultimate book for the ultimate Lynch fan, this book has everything you could want in a comprehensive "guide" to Lynch for those wanting to immerse themselves in the Lynch universe for the first time. Full color photos, a VERY detailed episode by episode guide to Twin Peaks, information on his newest projects (Mulholland Drive, his internet ventures), as well as those that never made it (One Saliva Bubble, Rocket Ronnie, etc.).
To sum it up, I believe anybody interested in Lynch should buy this book. It is intelligently written, thoroughly researched, and a joy to read. Lastly, I believe this book can pass the one test no other book about Lynch has been able to (to my knowledge): I defy you to find a factual mistake in this book. While I won't discuss it here, believe me that others are rife with them and this is a topic often discussed on my email discussion group. As a matter of fact, if any one is interested in learning more about David Lynch, discussing him and his works, and, as an extra bonus, getting to meet the author of this book, David Hughes (he is a frequent poster to the list) go to the yahoo groups website, sign in, and go to Lynchians! Enjoy the book!

Great reference for hunting, fishing, camping, hiking!
This is excellent to have for emergencies and general knowledge of what to do when an injury occurs. Very usefull!

For the camping, hiking, traveling, hunting, outdoor dog!
Being a nurse, I take the proverbial "be prepared" to extremes, but when you are camping hundreds of miles away from the nearest emergency health care facility, you must be educated to handle most emergencies of your family members.

Well, DON"T FORGET THE DOG

We just adopted a wonderful black labrador, and being a busy outdoor kind of family I needed a concise, handy, well rounded emergency care manual for my little boy, Abbott. I researched and decided on this pocket field guide that is perfect for carrying on your outdoor excursions. I am pleased with the content and find the directions easy to follow, even for a lay person uneducated in medicine.

Hopefully, my dog will never need emergent care, but I feel better knowing and gathering the knowledge needed to be there for him if the need becomes reality. Buy this book and put together a first aid kit for your dog. His life could depend on it.

The best, clearest, most useful first aid book out there.
I've reviewed many first aid books in my search. This is the clearest, most practical canine first aid book I've found. Most books read "take dog to nearest vet", this isn't always possible and this book covers what to do in those situations using clear text and precise pictures. Essential for anyone who takes their dog anywhere (even those dogs who just go to the park and back), but essential for dogs who go hiking, camping, travelling, kayaking, etc with their humans; anywhere you wouldn't be able to reach a vet within 20 minutes. Keep one in your car's glove box, the dog's backpack (along with a portable first aid kit), and one at home.

The Diamonds, where are the diamonds?

This book is packed with adventure, and there is always somthing happening. A young boy with a dad wanted by a killer sapposedly died but he doesnt belive it. Every one wants the diamonds that he had but no one knows where they are. Its a race to find his dad and the diamonds.

This book is set for young adults that like adventure stories. It has words that you can understand easily without much comprehension. Adults will like this story becasue it goes back to the time when they were young. If your a young adult you will love this story.

This story is told from the point of view of a boy. He talkes to his dog as if he's a real human and has conflicts with him too. It tells what he is thinking and his story from his eyes. In this story he has many internal and external problems and conflicts which you get to see from his point of view.

This story has many up's and downs and funny parts and a variety of moods. This book was put togeher so it flows through and makes you not want to stop reading. It keeps you reading in suspence. It wont let you down.

If you read this book you wont be dissapointed.

Jim Ugly Recommended
I read the book Jim Ugly; the author is Sid Fleichman.
The thing I liked best about this book is how Jake uses Jim Ugly to find his father. They never liked each other but then they became friends. My favorite character is Jim, even though he's a dog, he never gives up. I learned to follow your heart from this book and never quit. I recommend this book if you like adventures.

Great book, but Smith's credibility concerns me
I find the book really informative for someone who knows how to design web sites, and wants to make a living doing it, but doesn't know where to begin to start a business. He nicely covers all the things you just wouldn't consider otherwise, and the example worksheets, contract and business plan are greatly appreciated. However, while the chapters about the business-specific aspects are very good, I take issue with some of his off the cuff comments about his lifetime of failed businesses, and his ridiculously basic chapters on web design. It is almost as if Smith is demonstrating that web design is just something that anyone can pick up and make a living doing, without needing any special skills, talent or education to be a *good* web designer. I must take offense to that.

I think I can answer a question posed by a previous reviewer of the book: the reason you cannot find a direct link to Smith's web design business is probably because his own company's site is horribly done and embarrassing.

If you browse through his portfolio, his sites look as if they were cut out of a mold using some America Online wizard, with nothing creative in them whatsoever. In my opinion, they are truly horrible representations of someone who otherwise comes off as 'knowledgeable' in web design. I do not find this a comforting thing when he claims to be such an expert.

Furthermore, I find it hauntingly scary that he mentions his string of failed businesses. I guess he's pulling out the "trust me from experience" rationale for writing the book, but frankly, I think he's a tool for admiting these things. If I were a potential client, I wouldn't want to touch his web design business with a pole if I knew that he's collapsed many a business in his day, he prefers to do his accounting by dumping all of his receipts into a shoe box, and that he just moved onto web design as the 'next big thing' from some other failed attempt at income generation. It puts a black mark on those of us who truly believe that one needs talent and an eye for design in order to produce good web sites.

Bottom line: good book for non-business types, but Smith should not consider himself to be a good, credible web designer at all. Just skip over those chapters entirely!

A great place to begin ......
If you're thinking of starting a Web design business, then this book is a great place to begin. Smith covers all of the basics of starting a Web design business, including writing a business plan, buying equipment, establishing a legal structure, services you can offer, and making customer presentations.

Additionally, he offers a few pointers that even some experienced designers might find useful, like "charging by the site instead of by the page" and a sample contract that can be explained to your customers. This is the type of information my small business Web designers might find useful.

My only criticism is that it could be a little more detailed. For instance, the index is very shallow and there is not much actionable information that Web designers can use to promote their businesses. Lastly, I wasn't able to locate the URL for Smith's site (which may have been intentionally omitted by the publisher). My apologies if it's in the book.

One of a kind
Exactly what I was looking for - this book is the definitive guide on the subject. If there's a better book out there on starting a web design shop (not graphic design) I can't find it. It gets right to the point and covers all the bases. Like other reviewers, I checked out the author's site and was a bit disappointed. But listen, the book is well written by a smart entrepreneur who knows his chops about the business. Don't worry about his design skills; you can apply his writing to your own work. His writing is logical and enlightning and while reading it made me think "oh i should do that... ooh and that's a good idea too!" etc. Well worth the [$$$] and change it's going for now. I'd like to see an updated version soon with a CD-ROM enclosed with all the sample forms/contracts in text format for easy copying and pasting to help create your own forms/contracts.

MONSTER REVIEW OF JIM'S MONSTER
I read this book expecting it to be a normal childrens book, short and sweet. I opened the cover and proceeded to read about the types of boys in the world, and although I am of the female gender, this applied to me as well, as I am one that KNOWS there are monsters. At that precise moment, I knew this would be a fabulous book. And it was. I could not put it down. The imagination of Mr Kent is quite vivid and intriguing and reminded me of my own monsters that I battled as a young girl. And although my children are grown I am passing this book along to them to read, for I know that they know about monsters as well!! Bravo to Mr Kent and Mr Smith. I was very pleased and surprised.

One of the best books for children my kids and I have read!!
My kids and I absolutely love this book!! They haven't been this excited about a book we've read together since Harry Potter. Wonderful story, wonderful characters, wonderful book. I've been looking for other books by Robert Kent and Adam Smith, but so far I haven't found any. My kids and I read part of a book together every night at bed time and usually it takes us several nights to complete a chapter book like this one, but we read "Jim's Monster" straight through in a single night. Every time I'd start to put this book down and tell the kids it was time to go to sleep, my son, Devin, and my daughter, Dana, would lean forward in their beds and beg me not to stop. Usually I tell them no when it gets to be later, but this time I didn't want to stop either, so we kept on reading and we're going to read it again a few nights from now. The pictures are absolutely fantastic, like something Disney might do, and the writing is on par with Stephen King, only for kids. I was somewhat reminded of Roald Dahl, another of my kid's favorite authors. I simply cannot recomend this book enough. However, my other son, Donald, is only five, and I think the book may have been a little too scary for him. He sat near his brother and sister as we read, but I think he may have been too young yet for this story. But Devin is 7 and Dana is 9 and they both loved it. I'm 34 and I loved this book! Do yourself and your kids a favor and order this book right away. And, Mr. Kent, Mr Smith, if perchance you're reading this, you have four new fans here. We can't wait for your next book!!

A must-have book for Rifts players
This is a must have book fo rany Rifts adventure that uses Psyonics. There is a vast amount of material to use, but unfortunaly, a few reprints too.

Good but could have been better
This book was highly anticipated and had several delays in coming out. The end result was good, in that it gave the fans what they were looking for, but I felt it lacked "realistic" feel. It seemed to me that the book was too filled with stats and objects, and didn't have enough development and story behind it. Federation of Magic was better in this respect. The New West was the best in accomplishing the development of a "feel" to a certain subject. I feel Psyscape could have been better

Great book with great psychics and more on Magic Zone.
This is a great book for people who love to play psychics like me. More indepth info into Bursters, Mind Melters, and Mind Bleeders, with a close-up look on the Coalition's position on the psychic situation. Also with psicola, and a very cool picture of a Coalition/Psychic battle in the back.

Good stuff....
A nice collection of artists, with some great examples of what they can do. But....
Paper stock is poor and some prints are a bit blurry.

Look at it Regularly!
This is a great artbook, featuring many famous furry artists. I love the art, and look at it regularly. If you're a fan of Michele Light, I recommend it.

The best book in the world.
This book started my physical collection of furry publishings, and still remains the best singal pice I have. Not only is it perfectaly published, but contains excellent examples of anthropomorphic artwork. Its my personal bible.
