Whittingham Has Done It Again
WHittingham has his finger on the pulse of the Windy City. From his two excellent police novels "My Kind of Town" and "State Street" to his sports books, he knows Chicago. This is a must for Whitesox fans as well as his Chicago Bears history.

A Bible for the die hard Sox fan.
This book is a great one for catching up on the Sox' history throughout the eras. From the Black Sox to the Go-Go Sox to the Big Hurt. It contains almost everything a fan would need to know and would want to know. It did not include all the great players career stats but does with a few. Overall, a thick book but a great and easy read.

A great book - educational and entertaining!
What a great teaching tool for any educator! Dick King-Smith does a wonderful job of combining facts about pigs with their "personality", wrapping it all into one enjoyable reading experience. I can't wait to share it with the students at our school.

Still the best way to begin
I must have bought one of the earliest printings of this book and its companion, Volume 1, about 20 years ago. I was delighted to find it still for sale at Disk Smith Electronics stores on a recent visit to Australia [Cat B-2605].

These days, I have so many electronics texts, many aimed at hobbyists and beginners, but NONE that compares with the simplicity, clarity and general accuracy of these DSE texts. Without the guidance in these pages, I would have been very hard-pressed to understand the "higher-level" tomes that I was also keen to use.

The text is designed as instructions for 20 printed-circuit based kits that the company also retail(s/ed?) and, while it follows very nicely from the "Fun Way 1" series, it stands alone extremely well.

For me, the project directions are of secondary interest. There is a wealth of good information there on soldering techniques, electronic principles, how radio works, how to make PCBs and even a section on how the multi-tester works and ways to use it. Indeed, the first 27 pages are devoted to solid, basic information on workspaces, safety, tools, assembly tips, components and marking codes, and there is even a section on how to interpret circuit diagrams.

The text is superbly illustrated with excellent drawings and photographs throughout. There are several historical bits, too, explaining the contributions of various pioneers, but such lists can never be exhaustive. (How could they leave out Maxwell?! Probably a bit hard to explain his contributions at the desired level...Oh, well!)

The only caveat for beginners is that there are NO printed-circuit patterns included. The reader is expected to buy the kits or design the PCBs him/herself. There is enough information in the text to do so, and the component overlays and "see-thru" shadow views are sufficiently clear to enable any intelligent reader to duplicate the original PCB very closely. The included labels for gluing onto the completed projects are a bonus.

Don't let the cover illustration showing an eight-year-old put you off! A child that age would actually NEED good adult supervision and a lot of assistance, especially if the ready-made kits are not available. I don't recall any glaring errata from the original edition, and there has been plenty of time to revise these if they existed, over 36 printings!

Needless to say, I picked up new copies of the available texts on my vacation. I believe the "Fun Way 3" is no longer supported and would not expect another print run. I strongly recommend both volumes 1 and 2, however, to anyone wanting a clear, simple entry to a rewarding hobby or simply to assist with the questions of kids and grandchildren...

George Speaks
I read Gorge Speaks for a school project. I thought that this book was a very fun book to read! I liked this book because it was funny, it really got your attention and I just thought it had a good ending. I think a lot of people would read this book if they had a chance to and the time. I think mostly that a lot of kids would read it. Probably ages 4-9I really like this book and I highly recommend it and I hope you like it!

Exactly right!
For the past two years the Montessori preschool where I am a volunteer has placed this book on display in October. What a wonderful book for 4-year-olds! The illustrations are a pleasure and add their own content to the story. It happens that the families are Afro-American, and an adult reader might conclude that Tommy is being raised by a single parent, but neither of these circumstances is central to the book, which is about adults looking after their children in matter-of-fact, but nurturing ways. You can't finish this without a smile, and you'll not object to reading it aloud as often as a young child would consider necessary.

Great Entertainment & great value for money
My 5 year old son loves the stories in this book. We borrowed it from the library twice and even brought it on our 2 week holiday recently where he actually took the book out several times to read it amid all the excitement of the holiday! We finally bought one to read over and over again.

It consists of 15 short stories some of which are King-Smith's funny animal versions of familiar fairy tales like "Hogsel & Gruntel", "Little Red Riding Pig", "Goldipig & The Three Bears", etc. Sure winner with young ones, just like the rest of his books. Many of the stories appear in individual books, but this beautiful hard cover collection with colour illustrations is great value for money.

A Great Dog
This book is about a girl named Janie who finds a collar that belonged to her Great Dane, Rupert, who died when she was younger.
She carries it with her down the street. Mrs. Garrow, one of her neighbors, sees her and makes believe that she is petting a dog and gives Janie compliments on it. So Janie names her invisible harlequin Great Dane, Henry. She takes him everywhere she goes except school.
When her birthday comes her parents surprise her and take her to a dog show. She hopes the Harlequin Great Dane will win.
Read the book to find out who wins the show, what Mrs. Garrow finds in the teacup and how Janie's dream of owning a Great Dane comes true.
If you enjoy books that you can't put down, you'll love this one. I really love books about dogs so that is why I would recommend it to others who love dog stories.
