Book should be in Print
This book is out of print, and it's a shame. It's a wonderful book, containing information and a point of view that more readers, specifically American readers, ought to know. It's a history of civilization from the point of view of humanity's control of fire. It's a social and cultural history of our control of fire. It tells the story of how fire has shaped us, our civiliation--you know, the story of civilization is pretty much the story of our relationship to fire, from the first groups of hominids gathering around the fire to cook (the thing that distinguishes us from other animals, says Levi Strauss) through our use of fossil fuel in the industrial revolution to our "control" of nuclear fusion today. Goudsblom talks about both the literal and symbolic role that our relationship to fire has played in our civilization--how that relationship has shaped the landscapes we inhabit, the cities we construct, the religions and philosophies we build. His book is a stellar (well, 5-stellar) example of a kind of history I love, and which we're seeing more and more of these days: it's a classic, thematic, interdisciplinary history that tells a fascinating story. It isn't for wimps--Goudsblom is Dutch, and there's a European sense of literate intellect in what he's doing, which means he doesn't talk down to you or sugar coat anything or simplify it. But he's also not one of those g- d- Intellectuals who's more interested in elaborating some airy conceptual scheme at the expense of readerly understanding. He's smart, and reading this book will make you smart too, about all kinds of things. Most Americans, god protect us, are remarkably parochial in their understanding. We ought to know more about nature, about our cultural roots. This book offers both kinds of understanding. I think it should be in print. Maybe if you buy a copy used, some publisher somewhere will notice.

Impeccable resource of multi-national inheritance laws
This loose-leaf treatise compiled by Kluwers contains separate chapters for each country. Each country chapter follows the same format, making comparisons easy. This is a wealth of very difficult to obtain information.

A well-organized, easy-to-read Reference Material
The book gives a methodical approach to understanding temperature sensors. Before discussing new techniques and concepts, the author presents a clear introduction and explanation of various existing schemes, which keep the reader in focus. The separate chapter devoted to realizations of smart sensors motivates the reader by describing the significance and application to the new ideas presented with real-world problems. On the whole, the book is a significant contribution to the world of temperature sensors and will be a great reference material in helping masters/PhD students and design engineers be successful.

Ibsen, by Rick Davis
This multi-volume set of Ibsen's work, edited and compiled by Chicago/Evanston author Rick Davis is a little masterpiece.

The new adaptations are marvelous, and Mr. Davis' commentaries show us how Ibsen is a master crafsperson, and how his work may be best contrasted with Strindberg -- who is anything but a master editor and foundation layer.

I think Mr. Davis shows us how important precision and planning can be to the writing process. Therefore I think this book is a must have for screenwriters, as well as fiction-writers -- not to mention playrights.

Works of visionary greatness
Ibsen is often regarded as a "social writer", who, in his works, highlighted contemporary social issues. This is a great misunderstanding: Ibsen was a writer of visionary greatness, to be ranked with the likes of Tolstoy or Henry James. These six volumes of plays translated by Michael Meyer (also a distinguished biographer of the great man) are mandatory reading for anyone remotely interested in great literature. The very late plays, especially - "The Master Builder", "Little Eyolf", "John Gabriel Borkman" and "When We Dead Awaken" - take us to the rarefied heights of greatness.

Johan Padan and the Discovery of the Americas
Are you ready to sit back, relax and laugh a lot? Well, if you are, there is not a better book for you to read than Johan Padan and the Discovery of the Americas. Being that this piece of fiction is a fast read, it is great for a wide range of readers. From the young to the elderly, I'm sure everyone will see the humor. Behind the humor lies a story that will captivate many. Once you start reading this book you will realize that it is not very complex. It is almost a one character story with a few off stage characters. Dario Fo, the fantastic author of this book manages to fit one man's journey to America hundreds of years ago into under 150 pages. The novel contains humor, action, sex and many other concepts that help make any reader enjoy a book. Once you start, you will not put it down, and I do not wonder at all how Fo managed to win the Nobel Prize for literature. His ability to take a rather bland topic and spice it up is amazing. The ability to deeply describe scenes where Johan is alone or with another woman is amazing. He created a character with a strong voice and one very interesting journey. Johan meets almost everyone: from the men and women around Europe to the almost cave like Indians he encounters when he reaches America. This story will leave you spellbound and screaming for more!

The new Bible in Knowledge Management
This book will be a new bible in knowledge management, as was the Fifth Dimension (P.Senge)or the Knowledge-creating Company (Nonaka). It is one of the most interesting books available on knowledge management, for academics and practitioners. It provides a new vision of knowledge management and has a real value-added, compared to most of the books currently published in this area, which all propose the same ideas and success-stories. The editors and authors (among them Von Krogh, Ross, Blakler, Nonaka, Probst) are the best academics in the area, in America, Europe and Asia. Their theoretical background offer a comprehensive view of knowledge in organizations. They provide a new vision based on a constructivist and pragmatist approach of organizational knowledge and action, which contrast with the classical positivist school of thought. However, their book is not only for academics, but also for high-level managers concerned with implementing and measuring knowledge. The excellent quality of the conceptual background offers a basis for reflection, and they provide useful tools and examples of knowledge creation and measurement. The best book in this topic currently!

A Brilliant Book on Lie Groups
I have read this book with great interest. It deals with the theory of Lie groups from the global point of view, not only the usual Lie algebraic treatment. Of particular originality is the theory of orbits for compact groups, an issue with many applications such as the patterns of symmetry breaking in elementary particle physics. I also particularly appreciated the chapter about the Borel-Weil theory of representations which does not seem to be available in textbooks. The style and breadth of the exposition will certainly make it an instant classic, a perfect complement to the Lie algebra texts by Humphreys or Jacobson. I also appreciated the emphasis on the differential geometric aspects of the subject. One regret is that the authors did not delve into the orbit theory of complex Lie groups and the link with geometric invariant theory.

An Excellent and a Must- Buy MCQ Book
An excellent book for the preparation for Part 1. The sections on immunology, genetics , are really helpful as candidates are confused as to how to proceed with these topics in context to the MRCP exam. It does not go astray and confuse candidates as a lot of MCQ books do, but i would also like a bit more of emphasis on Basic Sciences. In short it is a very helpful, and informative MCQ book, and a last moment reminder to key questions which aspirants often forget to look up !
