Be a proactive slms -- read this book!
As a first year school library media specialist (slms), I found this practical handbook full of a variety of ideas and tips for grades K-12. I found myself not reading far before I was stopping once again to make a note for future implementation. Enjoyable to read, the tone is similar to a conversation one would have with an experienced and insightful mentor. Emphasis is on planning and promotion. Sample forms are provided -ex. interest survey to determine appropriate programming, planning checklist, community resource questionnaire, library volunteer form. A selective topical bibliography offers further reading possibilities. For slms's or teachers who are looking to begin / continue school programming, this book will prove more than worth your time. Five star recommendation.

A must-read for every teacher!
This amusing book is full of anecdotes, laughs, and short devotions for teachers. Patricia Ann Fischer helps dedicated educators to look at the lighter side of the teaching profession, while inspiring them with appropriate prayers and scripture. She portrays children and situations that every teacher, but especially "frontier teachers," will recognize and relate to, such as rainy days and required staff meetings. It can refresh even the most discouraged teachers and encourage them to keep on when the going gets tough. You're sure to laugh and cry your way through this oustanding book!

Old Friends, New Friends
Remember the little song we all sang at Brownie meetings--"Make new friends, but keep the old; one is silver and the other's gold"? This is an early reader every Brownie troop (as well as moms and teachers who confront the problem of new friends or old friends feeling left out) should adopt! Patricia Hall has a knack for writing early readers that are enjoyable stories, so don't toss this one aside just for beginning readers to decode themselves. It's a readable story about Marcella and her Raggedy Ann and Andy friends learning to make new friends, but treasuring their old ones--a lesson we all need to remember!

Patricia Hall writes a retrospective celebrating Gruelle's creations with Raggedy Ann & Andy. Includes the traditional Gruelle illustrations and is suitable for gift-giving.

Absolutely Wonderful
Twenty-five years ago, when my children were little, this was one of their favorite favorite books. We would sit for hours reading it over and over again and sniffing the wonderful smells of gingerbread, root beer, cinnamon, licorice, etc. I still have the book, but of course the smells are gone. I so wish Ms. Thackray would reissue this book and any other scratch n sniff books she wrote, like the Sweet Smells of Christmas. I would so enjoy reading them to my grandchildren. Children LOVE these kinds of books, and after all, isn't it all about instilling the love of reading in our children at a young age?
