Access 97 Essentials Level III

All three books in this series are great!
I had to learn Access for my job, and found this three-volume series. The books were designed for classes, but worked very well on their own. This book built on the topics (creating tables, forms, queries, reports, etc.) that were introduced in the first two books, and added some more complex topics. It used a step-by-step method, and the examples were real-life, not some widget company, which really helped. I am not a computer whiz, but I picked up this difficult subject without too much trouble, although some of the topics in this third book took more time to digest than the others!

Contemporary Rhetorical Theory: A Reader
Published in Paperback by Guilford Press (20 November, 1998)
Authors: John Lucaites, Celeste Condit, and Sally Caudill
Amazon base price: $45.00
Average review score:

Surveys the most important literature
Any compilation that purports to cover something as broad as "contemporary rhetorical theory" is bound to miss the mark on an essay or two, but this anthology scores a double-bullseye. The three authors, all respected theorists in their own right, have assembled the key essays around which rhetorical scholarship revolves today.

The book is organized in topical sections. Each section of the opens with introductory remarks that help students frame the topic at hand.

This is an excellent book for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses.

Fireflies in a Fruit Jar: On Religion, Politics, and Other Wonders by a Southern Preacher-Turned-Journalist
Published in Paperback by August House Pub (1988)

Amazon base price: $9.95

Fireflies in a Fruit Jar
John Workman is a Methodist "preacher-turned-Journalist" and this book is a collection of his Newspaper articles. The collection in this volume are wonderful. He is witty, reflective, an inspiration, and can put his thoughts on paper effortlessly (or so it appears). This book is a must for anyone looking for good-time reading. Read it on a cold winter night, or at the cabin in the summertime, it is full of Workman's experiences as a preacher, as a journalist, and as a father.

If You Love That Lady Don't Marry Her": The Courtship Letters of Sally McDowell and John Miller, 1854™1856
Published in Hardcover by University of Missouri Press (2000)
Authors: Thomas E. Buckley, John Miller, and Sally Campbell Presto McDowell
Amazon base price: $34.95
Average review score:

Great Story. Meticulous research. A "must have" resource.
Buckley's work on the agonizingly long and complex courtship of a distinguished Presbyterian minister (and later Confederate officer) and the divorced daughter of a Governor of Virginia is extraordinary.

The number of letters contained in this volume, PAINSTAKINGLY transcribed from handwriting that is (at least 50%) illegible, is astounding. The story told is compelling for even a cynical 21st century observer of love and life . . . and a rare chronicle of the political and personal impact of 19th-century Presbyterian varying "insights" into the mind, will, and intent of an sometimes angry and always fearsome God.

The notes and bibliography are priceless. They alone make the book a must-have resource for anyone interested in the 19th century history of southern Presbyterian protestantism, women's rights, religious bigotry, Rockbridge County, Lexington and most of the rest of Virginia. . . . . not to mention the geneaologies of perhaps half the population of the entire valley of Virginia.

Detailed, execellent, and pound for pound . . . no better value.

A credit to an editor's labor of love . . . and to the University of Nebraska Press for publishing it.

EASY READING, UNDERSTANDABLE, UPLIFTING
SALLY JOHN HAS A GREAT TALENT FOR ENGROSSING THE READERS INTO HER STORY. THIS BOOK IS ONE OF THE BETTER CHRISTIAN ROMANCES OUT THERE, AND I'M ANTICIPATING HER NEXT BOOK. THE READING IS VERY EASY, WHICH CAN BE FOLLOWED EASILY FROM START TO FINISH. I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO BE ENCOURAGED.

John Muir (People Who Have Helped the World)
Published in Paperback by Morehouse Publishing (1990)
Author: Sally Tolan

Great book for fifth and sixth grades and up!
An excellent biography for fifth and sixth grade readers. Illustrations and a creative design greatly enhance this book, with both color and black and white photographs, charts, and maps; also including quotations by and about Muir and conservation philosophy. Does an excellent job of relating Muir's life and work to contemporary environmental issues and concerns. Includes addresses for further information, a short bibliography, a glossary, a chronology of Muir's life, and a one-page index. Suitable for either home or classroom use.

A great way to learn a difficult subject!
I bought this book, along with three others in the series, for Winter semester classes. Although the class lasts through April, I finished the first book in December, then the other three in the next six weeks, because I need to know these programs immediately! Each step includes a picture of what the screen should look like. That made it very easy to tell if I did the steps right. I occasionally used the CD, which showed every step of every lesson, and actually talked me through them. Access is the hardest of the Office programs to learn, but I think I got a really good foundation with this book. I can now get one of those doorstop books and use it for reference, having the needed foundation. What a great way to learn Access. I highly recommend this series!

A great way to learn a moderately difficult subject!
I bought this book, along with three others in the series, for Winter semester classes. Although the class lasts through April, I finished the PowerPoint book in December, then the other three in the next six weeks, because I need to know these programs immediately! Each step includes a picture of what the screen should look like. That made it very easy to tell if I did the steps right. I occasionally used the CD, which showed every step of every lesson, and actually talked me through them. Excel is the second hardest of the Office programs to learn, but I think I got a really good foundation with this book.
