Book has bad title
I was very unhappy with this accounting textbook. With almost 500 pages devoted to defining accounting terminology out of a 1,000 page book, Siegel/Schim should have titled it "An Accounting Dictionary with some shallow chapters on Accounting." The remaining 500 pages gave only a shallow review of accounting procedures. Space dedicated to business accounting is lost because there is a chapter on doing personal tax returns and one on personal financial planning. This personal aspect doesn't belong since the book's title, "Accounting Handbook" implies business accounting. Now if the authors are trying to connect a business owner's decisionmaking with his personal planning, than why were there no chapters on partnership and corporate tax planning or income tax preparation? The chapter on non-profits was a terribly short 15 pages long. There is no discussion of G/L, AP, AR or other mundane, but required basics of accounting.

Got me through college
The Accounting Handbook was very helpfull during my time in college accounting courses. It has since be a very helpfull desk reference in my practice. One can't go wrong with the price of this very handy volume. There are chapters on various topics ranging from basic accounting to value added accounting. There is also a very handy glossary/dictionary of hundreds of accounting and IT terms.

Wiley is better
I found a couple errors which is no fun when you are using a technical book as a reference source. The only other GAAP book I've used is Wiley and I think it is a much better option.

It is the finest book of its type that I have ever seen.
It can be used by anyone, regardless of the level of their business and accounting knowledge. In this regard, I agree with the comments made by Leon Lebensbaum as set forth on the cover: "Will well serve both the neophyte and the experienced practitioner."

What about policies and procedures?
I was disappointed when I received this book since I thought it was going to be a guide to writing policies and procedures. This book is a guide to financial statement preparation.

Good but a little bit too exaggerated
This is an average book. It offers some insights and ideas about managing your financials that can be useful only for someone that has no background in finance. Some of the solutions are unrealistic and others are not pheasible for everyone, however. The price, though, is more than reasonable. You can find solutions tailored to a number of financial problems - 569 of them. Most of them are common sense, although there are some innovative ideas in this book.

Over-priced
In my opinion, this book is overpriced. I have not finished reading it, but I have a general feeling so far that a book going for US$ 45 has to deliver. It does not matter whether it is a hard-copy. The book has some incomplete sentences, something I honestly did not expect considering the level it is targeted for - well-read business executives, etc.

That said, it gives what I think is useful information for someone in hurry.

More Practical than Theory!
This is a very well - organized introduction to cost accounting. There are some very useful chapters on cost behavior and cost estimation, as well as cost-volume-profit and break even analysis. The theory is very clear, however, the quantitative examples are basic. Not a complete study guide for the MBA student, but a great compendium to supplement theory and basic understanding. Plus, if you own several volumes from the Barron's Business Library you get the bonus of having them look cool on the bookshelf!

Not good
Frankly, I'm embarassed for the authors. I have the second edition, and it is rife with errors. It just illustrates what a PhD is worth these days. I held out hope that the enclosed CD would have a spreadsheet of value (as it implies in the text) but all that is included is the book in PDF format. Thanks guys, that's helpful! Your next book should be titled "How to lie on the cover about the contents".
I just don't know at whom they are targeting this book. Too basic for anyone in finance with a semester of accounting under his/her belt, maybe it's for kids in high school in Junior Achievement? People running Kool Aide stands?

I think we all know the market -- their students who are hosed into buying it. Click another link to get away from this book as fast as you can, so my suffering is for a purpose.

almost worthless
This book is practically useless for anybody who actually needs to do financial analysis and forecasting at work. 90% of us use spreadsheets for financial analysis and forecasting, and we end up working with complex spreadsheets which tie everything from complex sales forecasts to income statements to balance sheets to cash flow projections. I am still looking for an appropriate book and/or spreadsheet add-ons that will allow me to do this. I have been searching in vain for such a program and/or book. Does anybody know?

Could be useful for beginners in financial analysis
The section on spreadsheet is terribly outdated - obsolete even. It's pretty much like a basic reference for financial modelling but does not really provide the step by step approach to the topic. Sorry but I don't think you will find useful tips on financial forecasting here.

I'm Glad I Evaluated this Book First
This is a very poorly written book, and I found much of it to be completely useless. I decided to check out other people's reviews on this book to see if anyone else felt the same way. I sent it back immediately.

Overstating the obvious
Poorly written, full of grammatical errors, and not too informative. I must stop buying books sight unseen without a recommendation from someone else who has read the book and who I trust.
