Very good
I really liked this book, how could i not? It's Shakespeare. I liked Twelfth Night also because it doesn't end with happiness and laughter like most comedies, it ends with the fool's sad song. very good.

William Shakespeare, the Taming of the Shrew (Penguin Critical Studies)
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (November, 1995)
Authors: Stevie Davies and William Shakespeare
Amazon base price: $8.95
Average review score:

Hard-edged criticism
Stevie Davies, who wrote a critical study of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" as lyrical as the play itself, has again written a study whose tone matches that of the subject. She does not flinch from exploring the brutality of "Shrew", nor from describing the misogyny of the society that found women's pain and humiliation entertaining. She is raging, forthright, compelling. Any number of scholars have managed to twist and turn away from the ugliness of this play, claiming that it's a medical comedy, a farce, a cartoon, or (straightfaced!) that Petruchio is the character who is finally tamed. Everything turns out happily, they claim. Davies rightly dismisses those descriptions as both timid and sadistic. Rage and grief never weaken Davies's scholarly and precise analysis, but the emotions she shares with the reader emphasize her struggle with the play. The reader must struggle with it too and come to terms with the cruelty in human nature that the play charts so accurately; how comforting to find that Stevie Davies is in the trenches with us. Readers who enjoyed Carol Rutter's "Clamorous Voices" will find this book a must-read.

A graceful essay
Stevie Davies has written the only critical appraisal of "Twelfth Night" that is as delightful to read as the play itself! Her prose is lyrical and compelling; it resonates musically. She explores the characters' thoughts and emotions in great depth and never wastes time decrying their limitations. An observant, witty and compassionate critic, she preserves the delicate magic of wistful love and homesickness of "Twelfth Night".

Wonderful reference tool
Dent's work is fabulous for students doing research. When reading Shakespeare, one of my teachers explained to us that certain plants and flowers has special significance to the Elizabethans. I searched on the web but was unable to find this. When I saw World of Shakespeare's Plants at the local bookstore, I immediately bought it. It's been a valuable tool in all my Shakespeare studies. Must have for any Shakespeare scholar!

Shakespeare fans will love this!
Sports and Other Pasttimes clears up a lot of confusion on what living in the World of Shakespeare might have been like. For students in the modern day, it's hard to picture what things were like 400 years ago. Dent helps us overcome that with this handy book. When I read the Merry Wives of Windsor, I was unsure of what "Bear Baiting" was reference to. Turns out the Elizabethans had the oddly dangerous hobby of dancing with bears. I learned many things just browsing through this book. It's a great find--very useful!
