My meeting with the author
I met Fr. Maurice Shinnick for an hour in Adelaide, South Australia on February 27, 2002. For a number of years he was rector of the Adelaide Catholic Cathedral and has just been appointed new pastor ("parish priest" as they say Down Under).

He is a highly regarded priest in his archdiocese. He pioneered a pastoral program for people living with HIV/AIDS and is chaplain of ACCEPTANCE, an organization that supports gay and lesbian Catholics.

His book is dedicated to his brother Frank who recently died of AIDS, "a brother of generosity, courage and integrity, 1932-1996".

Significant is the the second quote under his brother's name: "The Bible contains six admonitions to homosexuals and three hundred and sixty-two admonitions to heterosexuals. That doesn't mean that God does not love heterosexuals. It's just that they need more supervision." (Lynne Lavner)

His authograph on the title page of my copy of his book: "Larry, Respect for the dignity of every person knows no borders. Maurice Shinnick, 27.2.2002"

I heartily agree with Elizabeth Stuart, Senior Lecturer in Theology, University of Glamorgan, Wales: "This book should be read by every bishop, priest and lay pastor in the Catholic Church as well as every gay or lesbian person who has concluded that being happily gay and Catholic is not possible."

A Plea for Humanity towards gay people in Catholicism.
For generations, gay and lesbian Roman Catholics (and ex-RCs) have been left bewildered by their Church's hostility. This appears to be in contradiction to the message of Christian charity, and the condemnation which they consistently encounter appears to have little foundation in the original Scriptural sources.

Father Shinnick, whose work with AIDS sufferers and others led to an award from the Australian state, presents a new approach from an RC viewpoint, arguing that the positive aspects of homosexuality are ignored in the tumult of condemnation to which it is subjected.

Especially troubling is Fr Shinnick's association, illustrated by case-studies, of around thirty per cent of juvenile suicides with a growing awareness of a homosexual identity. His voice, an informed appeal for understanding and acceptance, is one which well deserves our attention. His work readily deserves to be read by both Catholics and non-Catholics concerned with matters of human nature and sexuality.

Thought Provoking
This book is a collection of some of the lead articles from 'The Banner of Truth' magazine from the late 1980's through the mid 1990's. They are filled with insight and depth that will both encourage as well as search the conscience of the believer. Mr.Roberts has an excellent understanding of many of the weaknesses of the Christian Church in our day. The third section of chapters entitled 'The Christians Walk' will be very helpful to both young and very mature Christians. The chapter in this section entitled 'Glorying in our Infirmities' is exceptionally profound. One brief quote will help to illustrate this point;on p.125 "This is the strange paradox of a healthy Christian mentality. It refuses to glory in its own strengths and prefers to make an admission of its own weaknesses... When believers glory in their strong points, therefore, they must expect Christ to withdraw His grace from them in some measure. Alternatively, when Christians 'glory in infirmities',they make a kind of appeal to Christ to be their compensation." What Mr. Roberts is pointing out here is an element of Biblical humility, which is an essential dynamic of the Christian life, which causes the believer to have increased confidence in God's ability to help them walk uprightly and decreased confidence in their own native ability. It is hoped that the 'Banner of Truth' will consider publishing another book of the lead articles of Maurice Roberts for they are extremely helpful and relevant to the Church of Jesus Christ in the 21st century.

A satisfying read.
This book is a collection of articles written for The_Banner_of_Truth, a magazine published in Great Britain. Mr. Roberts covers mainly topics on aspects of the Christian life, yet each article has great relevance in that he encourages us to think correctly about who God is, and who we are before Him. This is not a book of "feel-goodism", but of solemn reflection on what our role is in society and in the kingdom of Heaven. Christians are to recognize, according to Mr. Roberts, that sin is truly sinful and God is truly Holy. But through Christ, our "thoughts of God" can be corrected.

The TV series was also great!
Sadly I have never been able to get my hands on a copy of the book, but I saw the TV series when I was 6, and it certainly made a lasting impression on me. Great story, great atmosphere! I still vividly remember scenes from it...

A Brilliant Book
Maurice Gee's book Under the Mountain is an amazing book. It was first read to me when I was only about eight years old, and I just found a copy and re-read it. Rachel and Theo Matheson are twins, and apart from having red hair, they seem to be perfectly normal kids. Until they visit Auckland and are encountered by a strange old man, and a couple of freaky neighbours. The twins discover that they are a crucial part in the war between two alien races. Rachel and Theo learn that only red-haired twins can save their world from destruction by huge, powerful alien creatures. This is a great book, and I'd recommend it to people of all ages. I know my parents liked it just as much as my brother and me. The characters are believable, and the plot is well thought out. Although I prefer Maurice Gee's O series, I still love this book.

Klein's Union Pacific Volume 1
I found Klein's fantastic first volume on the history of the Union Pacific in the library of a neighboring town. Klein's history covers both the difficulties encountered in building the railroad and the financial/political scheming that went on back east in New York and Washington. After reading Klein's book, particularly with respect to the fraud and politicing, that one fully understands why railroads were feared and government regulation instituted. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the building of the Transcontinental Railroad and/or early US railroad history. (PS: I also found Volume II to be an excellent continuation of Klein's work.)

History of UP 1862 1894
Professor Klein deals with the turbulent early years with a grace and style not often seen in business history. I had the unique experiance of reading these books in the reverse order, ten years apart, but nothing was lacking in Volume One. Particularly sensitive treatment of the Gould years, and a very cohesive and in depth analysis of the Credit Mobilier fiasco. Klein writes very well; a strong point when dealing with high finance. Great book.

Stylish, Sexy, Hilarious!
"Vellevison" offers a perfect mix of Maurice Vellekoop's artwork and strips, from his earliest work to his later magazine illustrations. His Paris Couture Diary 94 for Vogue magazine is a particular favorite. He mixes a cultural cocktail that is smart, sexy, and at times a thinly disguised autobiography. Page 50 is the very definition of camp. I can't recommend this book enough! It has something in it that will make everyone you know smile.

Vellekoop is a genius
This is an insightful, hilarious, and often profound picture book. I keep it on my bedside table so I can readily introduce it to new friends. Vellekoop is the real thing.

Guaranteed Satisfaction!!!
I am only half way through this book, and I'm having a hard time putting it down. A detailed description of life growing up in the mid 1930's. A must for any World War II veteran, historian, or just anyone that is interested in reading an entertaining, inspiring, and overall great biography. Maurice Ricketts paints such a descriptive picture that even myself, a 24 year old working college student can appreciate it. I recommend this book for everyone;well, except maybe young children.

As It Was By Maurice Ricketts
First I want to say this is a great book on as it was because I was one of his ship mate at the time. I injoyed it with great interest. Like the fellow said Been Their Done That. Loved it all. Now my biggest problem I would like to get in contack with this guy because I am sure that we could bend some ears for a while. If their is any chance that I get in contack with this guy I would be greatfull for the rest of my life.
Thank you

What Is the Origin of Man
Published in Paperback by Kazi Publications (1990)
Author: Maurice Bucaille

Finaly a book with truth!
Islam is a religion which has always claimed that as scientific discoveries are made it will only reinforce the teachings in the Quraan because they of course are the teachings of the creator.Maurice Bucaille has eloqouently shown this by using unrefutable scientific evidence and also highlighted how once a false claim has been repeated enough, people blindly accept it as truth. He sets the record straight.

Excellent book, recommended for all who love science & rel.
In his book, 'What is the Origin of Man', Maurice Bucaille unlocks the truth about Science and Religion based on Scientific proves in the Holy Koran. He shows how the truth from God does not contradict science, but the people themselves create the differences based on false claims and theories that were never proven, like Evolution.

Truly inspirational
I bought this book in 1981 and it changed my life. No kidding. After I read it I moved to Florida, bought a 33 foot sailboat and spent the next 6 and a half years sailing around the world myself. My only regret was that I never met the author along the way although I met others who had. So if you are looking for a book that accurately describes the beauty, awfulness and sometimes frightening aspects of sailing a small boat around the world, this is the definitive book. First class.

Great story of a young couple who sailed around the world.
I have read this book more than once. It the well told story of a young couple from the arctic who purchase a small wooden sailboat in England and sail it around the world on a five year voyage. They don't know much about sailing or traveling when they begin their journey. It is an, often times, humorous story about their experiences learning to travel under sail. It is full of wonderful stories about the people they meet and the sights they see along the way. Even non-sailors should love this story.

Xenophon's Anabasis: Book 1-4

Ultimate Student Edition
Mather and Hewitt's edition of the Anabasis is self-contained in a way that very few Greek texts currently in print are: not only does it have a very detailed line-by-line commentary, map and complete vocabulary, it also has a fulsome introduction to Xenophon and the Anabasis, including what the ancients thought of Xenophon, Xenophon's personality and subsequent literary career, and the organization and equipment of the Persian and Greek armies. The introduction and commentary are both pre-multiculturalist and therefore unabashedly discuss such things as the moral lessons to be drawn from the Anabasis, and the Anabasis as a model of democracy. Throughout, the text is furthermore illustrated with delightful little reproductions of Greek and Persian art, technology, monuments, coins, weapons, etc.

And of course, if you're looking to brush up on your Greek without the aid of a classroom and instructor, this edition is a great choice. Not only does it have the advantages enumerated above, but the Anabasis itself is relatively easy and clear Greek with a historical rather than philosophical vocabulary.

An Excellent Book for Self Study
This is an excellent edition for those who are studying Greek on their own. The Anabasis is a fine second year book because its Greek is easier than the "Apology of Socrates" by Plato. This edition also has grammatical notes and a Greek-English dictionary of all the words you will need for translation. You do not have to spend hours looking them up in the Liddell-Scott lexicon. Also, it lists interesting cognates and borrowings for most words. I strongly recommend this edition for those working on Greek as a hobby or outside of an academic environment.

Getting started in Fly tying
I have never tied flies before and just started fly fishing a year ago. This book provides detailed instructions and illustrations on how to tie a variety of flies. Even if you have never done this before. The book covers materials, various patterns, knots, and more. The illustrations are large, colorful, and easy to understand. A very good book for a beginner.
