BEST! Pharm book around
I used this book to study for my second year pharm class, and it has to be one of the best medical texts I have used so fair. It is an excellent balance between not enough info, aka ridiculously simple, and sweet jesus Katzung! It is concise, well organized, and has helpful pictures. I can't stress enough that if you are in the market for a pharm book THIS IS THE ONE!!!!!!!!! You will thank me later as you get your H in pharm!

I Want to read the book again!
I read the book and saw the movie so many years ago. The movie was and still is one of my favorites. I am going to see if I can order a copy from Amazon, as well as order the book. The story of Mary tells us just how difficult life can be and how the technology of today's world here in America has helped reduce the tragedies suffered by Mary and her peole to practically nothing. Evelyn Keyes played the part of Mary. Now I wait for one or both the book and the movie to arrive at my door!

My Favorite Book
I checked Mrs. Mike out from the school library when I was in the 6th grade. I brought it home and my mother was so happy to tell me how much she had enjoyed the book when she was younger. I have read Mrs. Mike several times since then... and it is always as if I am reading it for the first time. I often ask friends, "Where are the Mikes of this world??" I was so touched by the love the Flannigans had for each other and it is so comforting to know that their's is a true story! I am in college and now and just recently found a first edition of Mrs. Mike at an antique store. I now have three different copies and I plan to keep my collection growing. I thank the Freedman's for writing a book that I will never stop enjoying. Please read Mrs. Mike, it is a touching story of romance that one does not come across often.

Mrs. Mike
I,also, read this book when I was a young girl in the 60's. I have read it many times since then. It's a timeless classic. You feel like your right there with her,you feel her sadness through bad times and happiness through good times. Also, I remember seeing the movie of Mrs.Mike on television on the Saturday afternoon matinee several times as a teenager, but I've been unsuccessful in my search of purchasing the VHS video movie.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
What a wonderful gift Coens and Jenkins have given to us! As a Human Resource Director at a large, Midwest manufacturing facility, I see first hand the impact of performance appraisals on both the company and the individual. I have never felt comfortable with the appraisal process, but always feel responsible for assuring its proper implementation. Despite my best efforts, the process never works as it is intended. Numbers continue to get in the way of meaningful conversation, ratings are rarely accurate, people continue to feel bitter and betrayed, and managers, in general, are uneasy with the process. This book has done several things for me. First, it validates my discomfort with performance apraisals. Secondly, it explains why I feel the way I do and thirdly, it lays the foundation for the "new thinking" that's required for an organization to develop sound alternatives to performance appraisal. The authors draw effectively from the myriad of research by respected change agents such as Dr. W. Edwards Deming, Alfie Kohn, Peter Scholtes, Philp Crosby, Douglas McGregor and others. From the opening dedication ("To all the supervisors and managers who care about people and who have tried their best to make performance appraisals work") to the book's closing call to action by T.S. Eliot, ("...to make an end is to make a beginning") this book spoke to me. Coens and Jenkins have created a lasting and important contribution to the serious debate about the effectiveness of performance appraisals.

New Thinking: Abolishing Performance Appraisals
Do high performance work systems and knowledge driven work designs need to incorporate performance appraisals? As business leaders move rapidly to transform organizations, they are forced to grapple with what to do about a performance appraisal system. Tom Coens and Mary Jenkins draw from an extensive bibliography of practitioner and academic leaders plus extensive personal experience to say,"abolish it!" Yes! Abolish your appraisal system and replace it with custom-designed decoupled systems for pay coaching, counseling, mentoring, development, and legal justification of personnel decisions. This book is aimed at practitioners and leaders but should be assigned in business schools. It is a provocative and powerful counterpoint to scholarly and professional books that reinforce the old thinking of bundling everything into one appraisal system. This old style approach has plagued managers, employees, and their organizations for the last century. If you a searching for a well-written and exciting read, buy this book!

An Important Contribution
Dear Prospective Readers,

I would like to give ABOLISHING PERFORMANCE APPRAISALS by Tom Coens and Mary Jenkins my highest recommendation.

For years I have been convinced that appraising the contribution of individuals is a highly destructive organizational enterprise. I have come to this conclusion through my own experience and through the persuasive writings of Peter Scholtes (The Leader's Handbook) and W. Edwards Deming (The New Economics) and other authors.

Coens and Jenkins have written a thoroughly researched and documented text that provides a wealth of information on why performance appraisal should be eliminated, and what instead should be done to perform the functions it allegedly achieves.

Pages 306 and 307 provide an excellent summary of principles that can be used to improve organizational performance, coach employees, provide feedback, determine compensation, make promotion decisions, develop employees, help poor performers, and provide appropriate legal documentation in the event of a lawsuit.

Figure 10.1 on page 286 provides an excellent summary of the process necessary for an organization to free itself from the grip of individual appraisal and refocus its attention on improving system performance. It is appropriately called a "Sixteen-Step Program to Recovery from Appraisal".

Coems and Jenkins have made an extremenly valuable contribution to those organizations that seek to create humane work places.

Sincerely,

Laurenece J. Quick, Ph.D Associate Professor of Management Aurora University Aurora, IL.

Unlike any fantasy book I've ever read
This book surprised me and drew me in from the opening line, "When I was nine years old, I hid under the table and heard my sister kill a king." How could anyone resist an opening like that? Quest for a Maid follows its own guidelines about how a fantasy should be written. The evil villainess in this book is also the main character's idol. Our heroine has no magical powers or battle skills, only her wits and courage. Much of the book describes Meg's childhood, which lends the book a kind of innocence to contrast against the elder sister's intrigues. Meg, Davie, and Peem form an adventuresome and loyal trio. You may even find yourself liking the evil villain, though we see little of what she does. Much of this book is written phonetically, but after you get used to it, you'll find yourself thinking in a Scottish accent. This book will make you think twice about love, sin, and redemption. A rare book. Read and enjoy.

Fascinating story set it medieval Scotland
I accidently "rediscovered" this book a couple months ago, and it captivated me the second read as much as it had the first. The first time I read it, it had so much impact that 3 or 4 years and probably 100s of books later (yes, I read a lot) it was one book that I always remembered, even when I couldn't remember the title or author. When I accidently found it again while browsing the library book shelves, it was like finding an old friend! This book has an excellent and realistic portrayl of life in medieval Scotland, and really brings you into a different world. But also, the story is just really interesting and the characters are very well written. I loved seeing several years in Meg's life unfold and whatever was happening to her was always interesting to me, from the whale adventure, to sailing, to the witch sorcery, to living with Davy's family, to the actual 'quest for the maid' itself.

I definatly reccommend this book to anyone interested in medieval times or Scotland, or someone who just likes a good story with adventure and a bit a romance. Though, if you are a reader who only likes really fast-paced books, it might not be for you, since while it does have exciting adventure parts, some parts are slower.

This is my favorite book!!! I've read it 13 times!!!
Reading this a age 11 changed my life. I was forever obsessed with the middle ages, and this filled every craving for my infatuation with Scotland, leaving me only desiring a sequel. Quest for a Maid is my favorite book, and I have read it over thirteen times, never tiring of it. I'm on the edge of my seat every time, and can never put it down once started. Words cannot express the wonder and magic of this book, with its quirky characters and hauntingly beautiful storyline full of humanity and suspense. More than a masterpiece, this book is comfort food for the soul.

Cropped and missing fairies
There are 6 fairies that never made it into the book: Cat's Ear, Convolvulus, Goose Grass, Scentless Mayweed, Sorrell, and Wild Thyme. Also, some of the images are cropped out of context, grossly enlarged, etc. Nice collection, but if you want pictures to sit and pore over, get the little reproductions of the books.

The Most Wonderful book of Fairires I have ever found.
Now I'm an adult who ran across the book just a little while ago. I have always loved fairies, but was not really into the horrid interpretations of modern day artiest. This book is so amazing it's unreal! The artwork is so beautiful and delicate. She painted them as beautiful wide-eyed children and adolescents, with absolutely amazing accuracy on the accompanying flowers. The poems for each flower fairy describes the chararistics of the flower with such grace it sends chills up my spine. A WONDERFUL book for parents to read to their children, as well as a great book for adults who want to stay children at heart. I can not express enough the beauty and gentleness of her artwork enough! The book here contains all 8 of the Flower Fairies books as well as story of The Fairy Necklaces and the poems she illustrated for Old Rimes for All Times. You will not be disapointed.

Good Pictures
Since I can remember I have loved th faerie series and this book is what I wanted most for my birthday. The pictures kept me (and still do) occupide for hours with friends and alone. Me and my friends play a game with it where we open a page and point to the faeries nameing what we think each one is. Here is an examble of what we call the faeries, cute, pretty, and fun. If you have a daughter or if you like faeries, order this book.

Razor Sharp Reporting
This book is written with tight-as-a-drum research and detail. It read like a great suspense novel. As we sit on the edge of our seats for a cure for this devistating disease, Bazel shows us the behind-the-scenes deadlines cancer patients and doctors are working for everyday. This was an unbelievably good book.

A must read for anyone fighting breast cancer
I wish I had read this book last year. I ordered while my sister was being treated with Herceptin for a recurrence of breast cancer. Unfortunately, she died before I could get the book.

This book give real insight into the politics of cancer treatment - the passiveness of some oncologists, how an executive's own personal experience with a disease can determine if drug development will go forward or not, and how women are becoming more aggressive in monitoring their own treatment.

Bazell talks about the frustrations of critically ill and dying women in trying to work through the medical, academic and managed care maze to get the treatment they need.

This drug has been the 'magic bullet' for many women. It has been called the start of a new era is disease treatment. It is essential for anyone involved in this disease to read this book, to understand what they are up against and how they can help themselves.

What a bargain!
This book is a very comprehensive account of the discovery of a revolutionary drug to treat breast cancer. Very pleasant to read, the author guides you through the process which goes from discovering the drug almost by chance, making the trials (from a very human point of view) to the final approval of the drug. If you want to read a very enjoyable book about science, drug development, Phase III trials and human hope, don not look further....

Great book, ....eh ending
I think of myself as a fairly avid fan of Dragonlance. And there are a couple of elements about the series that i like; like the fact that the some, 90+ books that have been written about the world of Krynn are, well, just that, about Krynn. What I mean is that the saga, once you're into it and familiar with the history, geography, etc, you can read a new story and things make sense. Another element that I like about the Dragonlance saga is the fantastic element (ie, dragons, chivalry of knights, and MAGIC). I like that fact that this book reassures me in both of those elements. The setting starts the book around the time slightly before the War of the Lance and the Companions, in a not-so-well known part of Krynn. And since the entire book is about magic and the study of it, it gives a very good look behind the every-day workings of magic, and insight into how and exactly what magic skills mean. Magic has always been such an elusive force in the Dragonlance world, where all they talk about is uttering of words and vague things like, "concentration" and "feeling of magic inside". This book really helps to change that.

This book was an excellent read for magic-lovers like myself, and had most of the elements that make a good Dragonlance book, like a good plot, a love interest, and and a well-developed, main character. If you like magic/Dragonlance/a good read, get this book. It may not be one of the VERY BEST DL books I've read, but it's still well worth the time, especially if you're a DL fan.

In fact, my only problem with this book was one aspect of the ending (if you haven't read the book, you may want to look away now...); Guerrand's sister is not addressed in the ending... She was perhaps my favorite character(i think it was because she seemed like such a helpless caged bird that tried so hard, and i'm really taken in for those "romantic"-type characters) in the book, and everything wraps up nicely except her... what happens to her? Why didn't she find out where Guerrand lived and ran away from home to Palanthas? Why didn't she just run away to begin with?? I know that the second book continues the story, so I'm hoping for the best....

Great Story !
When I read this book I had no idea about fantasy , but I easily understood the whole story. ( about magic and everything.. ) Ýt was a great beginning to read other fantasy books.. The story was fascinating and VERY captivating , I hardly could leave it and spend time with my friends until the next day I finished it ! I highly recommend it to everyone !

Great Intro to the Magic in Krynn.
This book provides alot of information about the three orders of magic in Krynn. A vague story of the Cataclysm and the Lost Citadel is told well in this story.

For the storyline, I found it pretty interesting. There are several plot twists, which reveal what actually happened in the previous chapters. The author, Mary Kirchoff, describes objects in the story very well, which makes the readers imagine the world better. The characters' feelings are all very different, not just one or two similar characters.

Overall, I thought this was a very well-written book for starting Dragonlance readers and the experienced one.

I love "Expect Miracles." I couldn't put it down....
and spent many happy moments of my 81st birthday yesterday reading it from cover to cover.

This old world is in need of Mary Ellen's special touch! Each of the stories provides much appreciation for events that happen to us and "lights" the readers' paths thru sunshine and stormy days, providing an inspiration to each and all of us, and encourages us to look for miracles, to expect to find them, and recognizing them.

"Expect Miracles" an exceptional book, and is one which I will read, reread and reread many times, it will always be a "very special friend", with its special words of wisdom, thoughtfulness, and love. Thank you! Mary

I love this book.
"I am currently reading Mary Ellen's new book, "Expect Miracles," and must express my overwhelming gratitude for what this kind of book adds to all of our lives.

I read one or two "miracle" stories each morning to begin my meditation and prayer time, and usually end up starting this period of my day with tears running down my cheeks... which even as a male I lovingly admit!

Discovering how other people are helping one another or have discovered angelic help in their lives is a great way to start the day.

This book will make a perfect gift for all your friends, whether or not this is a critical time in their lives, or just as an added gift because you love them so much... either way, its message will be well received, I guarantee it, and more than likely passed on to other people in their lives as each day passes.

And hopefully, they too will buy extra copies and send them to their friends. I give this little jewel a 5 star rating (out of a possible high of 5). Share it with all those you love!

with peace, love and joy,

Dick Sedona, AZ

was a gift from heaven
This past summer i was in the hospital for the 3rd time. I was feeling VERY depressed and hopeless. My friend Jamie came to visit me and she brought me a book. She had told me about Angelscribe.com and I had checked out the site a few times. Jamie also told me that she had wrote about a miracle that she had experienced and that Mary Ellen was going to publish it in a book. Well, the book was Expect Miracles. This book was not only a gift from Jamie, but also a gift from heaven. I read it from cover to cover as i lay in my hospital bed. The stories were so touching. It made me remember that God is in charge of my life and I need to let him take care of me... God Bless

Fascinating!
I read this book in one day-couldn't put it down! I grew up in Massapequa, NY and went to school with Al DeMeo. It blew me away to read what he was going through, while attending high school and acting like a "normal" kid. We all knew that his father was "in the mafia" but it was presumed that most weathly Italian men in this area also had links to the mob. While I was drawn to it for my hometown connections, my husband, who is not from LI, also could not put it down! I have recommended it to many family and friends. Excellent story about the home life of a member of the mafia and the repercussions it has on his family, the ones he tried so hard to protect.

The ignoble consequences of Roy DeMeo's sins
Al DeMeo's 'For the Sins of My Father' offers the other side of Roy DeMeo as portrayed in the book 'Murder Machine'. Young DeMeo describes in vivid detail growing up in adulation of his father, gradually facing the reality of life in the Mafia but never quite coming to terms with the extent of his father's sins. It's understandable why Al doesn't believe the accounts of his father's bloody butchery in the 'Murder Machine', considering that he grew up seeing the fatherly side of Roy DeMeo and was never subject to his father's blood-curdling brutality. Al's account of his life growing up as the son of one of Mafia's most notorious killers is sometimes heart warming, usually sad, and always suspenseful. All in all, this book is well worth the read. It is different than any other 'Mafia' book; Al was not only the son of a vicious killer but a victim of his father's deeds. For greater effect, I recommend reading 'Murder Machine' before reading this book. Good luck to you Al DeMeo.

Excellent read !
I am by no means a big book reader but when I got my hands on "For the sins of my father" I couldn't put it down! Albert, son of a mobster and devoted father Roy DeMeo does a masterful job of showing the other side of mobster life. The side where the "sins" commited by his father were far surpased by the loving relationship he had with his family. I would highly recommend this book! A+++++

YOU HAVE GOT TO READ THIS BOOK!
This is my favorite book ever! I carry it around with me everywhere! This book will touch your heart and soul, and you'll never forget it! Mary O'Hara's style of writing makes you grow to love Flicka and Ken! Flicka, a wild filly who is thought to be loco because all of her descendants are, is the only filly Ken, a young day dreamer, will have. His father is outraged when Ken will have no other! When they bring Flicka in, she is so afraid, she tries to jump a barbed wire fence that is obviously too high! The McLaughlin's can't afford anything but barbed wire fencing, and Flicka is torn up. Because she is so hurt, Ken can get close to her, and soon becomes her whole world. When hail comes, he threw himself over her head to protect her, and reads to her for hours, sometimes he'll just gaze at her. If you like horses, this book will make you love horses! A must read for ANYBODY who is the least bit interested in horses!

This is my favorite book of all times.
When I was in the fifth grade a perceptive teacher introduced me to this book. I have loved it ever since. Ken is a powerful character because you love his abstractness, his absorption in his make-believe world, and his gentleness, but you can also understand his father's annoyance and concern with his lack of responsibility. Both characters are strong with the mediating influence of Nell creating the balance needed. The story is beautiful, well crafted and poignant. I read it several times a year, and every time I learn new things about myself and the people around me through the characters interaction with each other, and the thought-provoking, excellent, descriptive writing. Andrea

Not Just for Children
Long relegated to the ranks of children's books, My Friend Flicka is indeed a wonderful story for a thoughtful child. I first read it at the age of 9, and have read it many, many more times throughout my life.

As a 9-year-old, I loved the story of the sensitive boy, Ken, and his filly Flicka, who has questionable bloodlines and does not meet with the approval of Ken's stern rancher father, Rob McLaughlin. Boy and horse must surmount that initial disapproval and all sorts of other challenges as they struggle and grow together.

But on another level entirely, My Friend Flicka is the story of a marriage that is so real, so adult, and so compelling, that any adult can appreciate the story. In a nutshell: Rob McLaughlin, a former captain in the Army (this was written shortly after World War II), is struggling to make a success of his Goose Bar Ranch, where he raises thoroughbreds in the rugged Wyoming countryside. His wife, Nell, is a blueblood from the East whose apparent fragility masks an inner strength that is Rob's lifeline. A delicate-looking beauty, Nell nevertheless can deliver foals at midnight, weather all the storms that ranching throws her way, and still feed a hungry crew of workers three times a day.

Rob and Nell's marriage is strong and passionate. But their one bone of contention is their second son, Ken, a daydreamer who simply does not fit the mold of Rob's ideal son. Older boy Howard is the perfect McLaughlin: athletic, strong, personable, talented, outgoing. Ken is slight, small, quiet, sickly, and above all, a creative dreamer. But when he sets his sights on a horse of which his father strongly disapproves, Nell fiercely backs his choice. And Ken begins to grow as a man--in his own way and in his own speed. And Rob learns some strong lessons about being a man, a father, and a husband.

If you have never read this book, or if it lives on your child's bookshelves, give yourself a treat. It's much more than you think.
