Wow! Great for any bear lover
This is a fascinating story of rare and beautiful animals and the crew of research photographers who became intimately associated with them. It offers some startling revelations into the life and behavior of bears. The Spirit Bear, or Kermode Bear, is a white genetic variety of black bear, found only on Princess Royal Island off British Columbia. The region is also home to black bears and grizzly bears which are included in the book as well. What is most remarkable here is how the bears on the island, which had very little prior human contact, accepted the crew with an open gentleness allowing many close encounters to be documented. The book is written in an engaging first person style and beautifully photographed with close ups of bears in various activities. It will surely be a favorite addition to the library of any nature lover.

great content, credible author, fascinating photos
Spirit Bear is the best combination of a well-conceived book design, telling photography, and an exceptional storyline. The author's credibility is supported by a three-generation family history in grizzly bear country. His true experience, though, is reflected in his down-to-earth sincerity and simplicity of reporting. Reverence, balanced with pragmatic humor, sets a very ageeable tone for this fascinating book. With only one very moderately bloody-nosed bear photo, you could quite readily share this book with children. I grew up in bear country and now live in the heart of tree-hugging country and I found this book to be true to the core of both. And a darn fine read.

Fantastic!!!
This book will give you the chills! A mystical yet true story on the nature of "wild animals" and the mystical and spiritual link between "us" and "them".Gorgeous full color photography. The book ends with the impending destruction of the Spirit Bears habitat by logging and a plea to save this unique island ecosystem.

Phoenix Eyes and Other Stories (The Scott and Laurie Oki Series in Asian American Studies)

Must-read for people who love Taiwan
As a person who enjoy life in Taiwan, I am fascinated with the book, especially with the title story. It is simply amazing. Poignant and precise. Also so tasteful. Must-read for people who have loved, known, stayed in Taiwan.

Poetic, Sensual, Pensive
Russ Leong's story collection (finally!!!) is a treat. The title story is especially attractive to me, a person from Taipei City, Taiwan. (Oh yes, Taipei is Sodom in the story) With a poet's sensibility, Leong knows to present the sexuality in Taipei in 1970s in a sensual and pensive fashion. Readers interested in CRYSTAL BOYS and NOTES FROM A DESOLATE MAN should not miss this title story. Also, another story "Geography One" is very compelling.

Fiction from the Heart
For readers like myself who have searched out literary quarterlies published in the United States over the last fifteen years, it was a great joy to discover the appearance of this long overdue collection of short stories by Russell Charles Leong. While living in San Francisco in the early '90s, I discovered Leong's writing in a literary quarterly. That story altered the way I viewed the suburban landscape of Los Angeles. It was also one of the finest stories I had read on the experience of lost love. Therefore, I was thrilled to find it as the second story in this collection. The story is "Geography One." Not only is it a must read, it is also an indicator of one of the themes, in this case loss, that underlies this collection. The title story "Phoenix Eyes," equally pungent, also explores the silent devastation of loss. In this case, a loss that can't be properly expressed as a result of cultural constraints imposed by the main character's former lover's family. The emotional scope of these stories is to broad to be forced cleanly into any ethnic or sexual niche. These are stories written by an important and long under-recognized American writer. And as such, one who deserves a wider readership. While this is his first collection of fiction, I can only hope it is not the last. As this collection affirms his talent, this reader hopes Mr Leong follows it with an equally long-overdue memoir or novel.

Really Liked
This is definitely one of Mr Lindsay's best FBI novels to date. Jack Kincaid, our tragic hero, is someone I felt sorry for, yet admired at the same time, flaws and all. Loved his detecting skills. The story was riveting and came to a thrilling climax. I'd pretty much figured out the ending, so was kind of reluctant to finish because I didn't want to be right. Overall, a very enjoyable FBI procedural, with a likable tragic hero. Looking forward to what comes next from Mr Lindsay.

You'll get caught in the author's trap...
As the title implies, traps of various kinds pepper the plot, including "bank traps," which underachieving FBI agent Jack Kincade uses to rip off bank night deposit drops. The money doesn't go towards supporting an affluent lifestyle; this down-and-out divorcee is living in a dive motel, drinking cheap vodka, and driving a battered minivan. But poker money has to come from somewhere.

Jack, who's found all the ways to dodge work a bureaucracy can offer, must investigate a massive bomb threat. A desperate man planted the bomb hoping to force the FBI to finally solve his daughter's murder. Jack partners with Ben Alton to follow some leads.

The two couldn't be more different. Ben, a family man, is a go-getter who worked his way up from the projects. He sets his mind to something and doesn't give up. But he's not working at 100% because he recently lost the lower half of his leg to cancer, and though he's back a month early to help with the investigation, the boss assigns him to desk duty for his own safety.

Of all the available agents, these two seem the least likely to succeed, but Jack's sharp powers of deduction and Ben's unstoppable energy work together well, and with some luck, the old crime is solved. But questions still remain, and the pair dig deeper to find another more-horrifying layer of murderous revenge. They must stay one step ahead of the villain and his traps; Jack's got to stay ahead of the FBI's internal police.

This audiobook had me hooked from start to finish. The pace never slows, nor does it move too fast that you can't understand what's happening. I'm no expert on the FBI, but the author certainly made me feel I was inside the organization, with its politics and personalities. Some events stretched the limits of disbelief, but I don't think they went too far.

As for the performance by the reader, it was mostly OK, but I have a few compaints. The voice of Jack was very gruff. At first I didn't think I'd want to sit through a whole book with that voice. I got used to it, but I never really liked it. He also mispronounced "interment" as "internment." My biggest gripe however is how his voice dropped off at the end of sentences. Since I listen while driving, hearing those words was quite a problem.

And sure, the "odd couple" pairing of Ben and Jack has been done to death, but this author pulled it off. They fire off some funny lines and it never became tiresome. The writing style is clear, never overwrought. This book isn't the same old thing. It's actually darn good.

fascinating crime thriller
It has been three years since his daughter has been kidnapped and the FBI still has not the slightest idea what happened to Leah Ziven. Her father Conrad builds a bomb and plants it under the Cook County jail, which houses over 15,000 prisoners. Only he has the combination to disarm the bomb and he won't give it out until they find his daughter.

FBI agent Jack Kincade, a man who robs banks as a sideline is partnered with Ben Alton, an amputee victim with something to prove. The hastily formed team finds the girl's body and the ransom at an abandoned shack. Leah's father gives them the data they need to remove the bomb but that doesn't end the case because the killer is still out there. Ben and Jack (not Jerry, silly) are on his case, trying to break him, a very dangerous thing to do to a psychopath with nothing left to lose.

TRAPS is a fascinating crime thriller due to the enigmatic anti-hero Jack Kincade. He's a drunk and a gambler who cut off all communication with his son. He robs banks to support his gambling habit yet in spite of all these failing, readers feel drawn to this bad boy because they sense there is a kernel of decency and goodness buried in his heart, waiting to bloom under the right conditions. Paul Lindsay will appeal to readers who like the novels of Patricia Cornwell and Robert W. Walker.

You must have this on your coffee table!
This is a masterpeice. It's beautifully done and it is a book that will be passed along from generation to generation. The author does a wonderful job and he's really an expert on this subject. And if you love this, and I know you will, you should get your hands on his newest book "Philip R. Goodwin, America's Sporting & Wildlife Artist" from the the Coeur d' Alene Art.

Now, go buy one of these books before they're all gone. This book costs a lot to produce and was heavily subsidized, as the price indicated, with donations and fundraising.

Confession of Faith: A Strong Woman's Statement of Her Faith
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (2001)
Author: Charles H. Russell
Amazon base price: $20.99

A Book To Appreciate
I enjoyed reading Confession of Faith and found it very worthwhile. The writer is a Norwegian woman who immigrated to Texas in 1847. Just prior to the Civil War, she wrote the confession as guide for her sons. It's not a didactic sermon. In it she expresses her thoughtful reasoning of what she believed and what she had doubts about within her faith, as well as practical applications for carrying out one's beliefs. Its message reveals a mother's love and concerns for her sons and is as appropriate for today's moral problems as it was a century and a half ago. The notes by the editor, Dr. Charles H. Russell, who holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, clarify the historical context of Elise's views. Only 118 pages, Confession of Faith is worth reading in small sections more than once and would make a fine gift for a loved one.

Passionate views of an independent woman
Dr. Charles H. Russell has done an excellent job in editing and bringing to life Elise Waerenskjold's "Confession of Faith." Waerenskjold intended for this striking revelation of her innermost being to provide her children with religious and ethical direction. Surely it must have, since her passionate views have merit today. But in addition, told from the pespective of a strong, independent woman, "Confession of Faith" also provides contemporary readers -- religious and secular alike -- with a unique view of life on the American landscape during the Civil War period.

Yeee Haw!
If you have read any other Jeanette Winter books, you know the quality and content are excellent. This book is no different. Cowboy Charlie is very special! It is a true Cowboy Story...the story of Charles Marion Russell, the great painter and sculptor, who was a cowboy, too! The sweet story shares how Charlie's parents wisely supported their son's dreams of the West and his artistic talent. The book's illustrations are a rich and colorful quilt that brings warmth to the story. Your budding artist should read this. Your little cowpoke will be encouraged to embrace his cowboy dreams in a new way. This is the stuff of great children's books. Get it.

Childrens book encourages them to follow their dreams
This is a delightful childrens book that should be in every school library. The simple story gives the very essence of the kind spirit of Charles M. Russell the Cowboy Artist, who loved children. Follow your Dreams, and use your talents is the theme to this uplifting gem of a book. The illustrations are brilliant and heartwarming...I bought an extra copy just so I could frame the images and hang them up to enjoy....they make me smile!

History, Chronology and the Bible
This is the second volume in a series of six. It contains an in-depth analysis of Bible chronology that shows how the Scriptures point to the time periods of Jesus' first and second advents. It also offers an explanation of Jesus' second advent that is different than the common view of the "rapture." What is especially intriguing is a chapter on the scriptural concept of the "antichrist," also known as the "man of sin," and how it can be identified by a study of the past rather than looking for a "man" of the future.

Most historians today see the year 1914 as a huge turning point in world history and politics. Written in 1889, this book explains the significance of the year 1914 from a Biblical point of view. One should read the author's forward/preface (written several years after its first printing) included in this book. This will help the reader to gain better insight into the author's perspective and into issues addressed. I also recommend reading the first volume of the series, "The Divine Plan of the Ages," to gain an understanding of the Biblical concepts that are addressed in more detail in this volume.

Bible chronology explained
This book calculates the exact length of time from the creation of Adam to the second advent of Jesus. I had been reading my Bible for eight years, and I had no idea this information was contained in the Bible. But this book traces the links of Bible chronology in such a logical way that it makes it impossible to dispute its conclusions.

We can know where we are on the stream of time!
This book expands on the outline presented in the preceding work by the same author, "The Divine Plan of the Ages". This is an excellent help for those in an honest search for Bible truth. It links Bible chronology with secular history to determine where we are on man's timeline in God's plan. A most interesting chapter entitled "Earth's Jubilee" expands on the typical Jewish old testament feature of the jubilees, and demonstrates the application to all of mankind. Of further interest is the evidence of scripture pointing to the identification of the time of Jesus' return!

All about our Creator and his plan
If you are interested in The Creator's grand design and how mankind fits into it well then this is the book for you.Give it a chance you won't be sorry you did.

Most influencial book of my life!
Topical study of the Bible at its best! Timely chapters that aid in viewing world events against the topical framework within. Chart of the Ages helps the reader comprehend where different scriptures belong on man's timeline. This is one of seven books in a series that reveal aspects of God's plan for man and explains questions that have plagued inquiring minds for ages. Included are: Why God permits evil, Jesus' return (it's object and manner), the Day of Judgement, the Kingdom of God and other Bible related topics. The author asks the reader to prove, with Bible in hand, the Divine plan presented within.

A Key to Unlock the Scriptures
The writer takes the words of God in the scriptures as a whole and harmonizes them to bring out what God's design is for mankind. If you wonder why God allows what He does right now in the world, read this book. Read this book with your Bible in hand and see those scriptures unfold in a way that simply makes sense.
