No longer will Americans snub their noses at the Made in Mexico country of origin trademark.The incredible pottery of Mata Ortiz has done much to dispel the notion of Mexican art as being inferior to American art.People the world over can now appreciate the beauty of the works that are produced in the village since the book clearly shows the artists with full-size colored photographs of their creations. In addition, but not less important, the authors introduce us to the potters in such a personal way that we can't help but feel an attachment to them and to their lives.We also learn of the historical importance of the ancient Casas Grandes ruins from which Juan Quezada, the founder of the movement, first explored and experimented. This nearby pre-Columbian city was an important trading center from Mesoamerica to the Southwest and was noted in the 12th to the 15th centuries for its high quality pottery production. Now, people will have a greater understanding of the connection between the tribes of Mexico to the tribes of the Southwest. This book has it all and is most welcomed by experts and collectors alike.

This is the best pottery book I have ever found! It is layed out in an informative, and beautiful manner. Not only is the pottery exquisite, but the photographs represent the pieces at their best. It is easy to understand, and gets one passionate about an art movement, that we can actually be a part of, in this twenty-first century. It is highly unsual to be living during a time when a new art movement is going on, and still striving for it's pinnacle. We see this with the unequalled workmanship of the Matiz Ortiz people in their Casas Grandes/Matiz Ortiz pottery. I really enjoyed getting to know each potter by name and photo, coupled with seeing their work, and feeling a part of their extended family. Juan Quesada, the founder of this artistic movement, is a highly spiritual individual, generous and gifted beyond belief. He is the reason that this wonderful pottery is being shown to the world. I am an artist that does pottery, and a retired teacher. I would recommend this book to all art teachers, and anyone who appreciates great art.

This book was my introduction to the world of the artisans of Mata Ortiz, Mexico, and their amazing ceramic creations. While the decorative motifs and other aspects of the pottery were familiar to me, I found that the photography, which I suspect was done with specialized "light painting" techniques, brought out the form, texture, and pattern of the pieces with wonderfully rich detail and nuance. The images were clearly created by a photographer who was very intent on rendering a physical, tactile sense of the objects she was recording. Coupled with other photographs of the artisans at work, and the surrounding Mexican landscape, the book is a compelling portrait of both the people who create the works of art and the art itself.

This complication is often self-limiting but sometimes needed some treatment procedures such as intravenous fluid restruction, patient prone position, strecth dressing of wound, epidural injection of autologous blood patche or fibrin glue, or uncommonly use of CSF drainage system.

We think that if this complication and its' management is included in new edition of the textbook it will be better.

The book starts with an excellent history of golf course architecture, albeit written with a distinct slant towards the Ross era, as one might expect. Aside from this opening history, the book must be considered basically a book of excellent photographs of Ross holes.

The captions to the photographs and the accompanying text leave much to be desired. Both seem to be written with the goal of being dapper or cute. For example, from the text describing the 3rd hole at Wannamoisett Country Club: "Playing out of this area requires familiarity with some of the famous chip shots of golf: the 'chili-dip,' the 'T.C. Chen,' and the ever popular 'skull.'" What does that have to do with Donald Ross's Vision of the Game? I would have preferred more focus on how the holes implement the architectual features which make each hole a "Ross signature."

Despite the sometimes distracting text, all Donald Ross fans certainly will want a copy of this book for their collection.

Many people do not know the name, Donald Ross, but almost every golfer knows at least some of the courses he designed. Perhaps his best known is Pinehurst Number 2, which was designed to be an ultimate championship challenge which it has provided now for about 100 years. You may also recognize Inverness, Essex, Salem, Wampanoag, and Brae Burn. Enormous numbers of USGA championships have been played on his courses.

Ross was born in Dornoch, Scotland, and was for a time the professional and groundskeeper there. He trained for this role under Old Tom Morris at St. Andrews.

Having heard about the boom in golf in the United States, Ross left to become the pro and groundskeeper at Oakley in Watertown, Massachusetts. He redesigned Oakley, and that began a remarkable career as a golf course architect. Between 1900 and 1948, when he died, his firm completed over 400 courses in the United States and Canada. At the peak, he had 30 building crews and 2500 workers.

This wonderful book was written by a cofounder of the Donald Ross Society, and shows a deep love and appreciation of Donald Ross and his work.

Donald Ross courses were all designed in the days before bulldozers, so the courses were designed to match the land. Donald Ross's philosophy was to create a course that was strict but offered a fair balance between risk and reward. Designed to be played without irrigation, the holes often play differently today. He was a modest user of water for hazards and did not use it as a central hole element, but didn't actually ban it either.

Signature elements include elevated tees and greens, extremely undulating tricky greens, fairways with almost no flat lies, and tees that aim you where you don't want to go. In today's parlance, it's a shotmaker's course. He loved the iron shot to the green, and provided lots of challenges of that sort.

This book starts with a wonderful essay about Ross. Then it goes on to pick 18 of his holes, as he might have laid them out as a single course. You get beautiful color pictures, views from tee and green, a close look at nasty hazards, and a schematic of the hole.

Naturally, I was delighted to find that the fourth hole of my home course (Brae Burn Country Club in West Newton, Massachusetts) was one of the featured holes. This is a 400+ yard par 4 that features a slight dogleg right, with out of bounds on the right for the length of the hole. About 200 yards out, there's a tree to block your route on the right (or potentially knock you out of bounds). On the left are sand traps every few yards to catch errant drives. Further down on the the left is a thick copse of trees. Your approach shot to the green is invariably over a bunker or two. Hit it too long, and you're probably out-of-bounds or in deep forest. The green itself is extremely hard to putt. In some locations, a three putt is well done. Whew! I'm glad I have finished reliving that hole. By the way, the book notes that a recent survey rated Brae Burn's greens the fourth toughest in the U.S. after Augusta National and others.

Whether you are a Ross fan or not, any golfer will love this book. If you are a Ross fan, this is a must have. It would also make a great gift for anyone who loves Ross.

Use this book to change your misconception that only a Pete Dye course can truly challenge shotmakers!

Hit 'em all straight, and you'll have no problems.

A superb and elegant rendition of the masterwork of Donald Ross. I have played a few Ross courses in the US and have glimpsed some of the wonderful work this landmark architect created. However, my own appreciation of Ross' genius pales compared to the care, thought, and detail that have been pored into this short opus. A book for any golfer who wants to gain a better understanding of the design aspect of the game we strive to conquer every time we play.

This book was one of two required for a graduate course in Histology. If you must take a Histology course in graduate school or medical school, I would recommend purchasing a separtate atlas, especially if you are a novice or have limited availability to quality slides. I personally recommend diFiore because it has multiple atlas plates for each tissue with different magnifications and stains. It is also reasonably priced. The text in Ross is very well written and presents the material in a compact, to the point style. This allows the student to learn the material without searching for what is and is not important.

I liked the book very much for it has Histology with some Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology included. Of course these text takes space from the book and reduces the amount of slides but each slide is given similar information and not just identification. Time to time comparative information. I found this book very useful when compared to simple Histology Atlases.You may need another Histology Atlas for more pictures if you are interested but this book is very simple and to the point all encompassing

This book doesn't assume that you have an extensive background. The first year medical student who was a liberal arts major can read through this book once and know histology as good (or better) than a student with a master's degree in anatomy! The chapters flow very logically, allowing the reader to make the all-important integration of various regions of the body and the processes/histology associated with them. Furthermore, every page has photomicrographs and/or drawings which allow the reader to have not only a more complete understanding of the material, but a clinically useful knowledge of the proper appearance of tissues. This book leaves nothing out and is, at least at the medical school I attend, unanimously agreed to be the best histo book available.

I found this book very heavey going, jumping between past and present so often, it kept me from entering into the story line as well I like. I really couldn't stay focused, I was never sure which period in time that I would be dealing with next. The plots weren't clearly drawn and were always changing, I found the heroine to be strange and left wondering who the true hero was.

Was looking for a new author, "somehow" found this book on the library shelf back in 1976. The twists and turns of this story caught my interest and I have had no problem remaining a totally happy fan of her books(Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters)ever since. Patriot's Dream came out around our country's Bicentennial so had an appropriate theme - American History, with time travel, reincarnation, interesting characters, the works! It is still my most favorite of all her books and would be an good candidate for a tv movie if done right!

I have read all of Ms. Michaels' books and this is my favorite. A wonderful heroine, love triangle and the author weaves the present and the past skillfully. The ending will make you cry! I read this book once a year, a must have!

An accomplished diver who lives happily with her mother and stepfather in Florida, Sandy is startled by the appearance of her biological father. Frederick is a crack-pot archaeologist who having lost his professional footing with colleagues due to his Atlantis theories wishes to discover the 20th century equivalent to Schliemann's Troy. He convinces Sandy to lie to her parents, meet him on the Greek Isle of Thera and dive in the treacherous expanse of sea that houses a live volcano. For Sandy this beomes an experience of polarizing emotions---while the Minoan traces on the island speak to Sandy in a way she does not quite understand, the precarious position of Thera, between two tectonic plates, keeps her permanently unbalanced as does the flirtatious relationship that develops between her with Jim, a young archaelogist working for the competition and the father-daughter tie she feels despite the seemingly insensitive actions of her father.
Intermingled with the usual Barbara Michael's mix of historical data and romance, is the coincidental reunion of Frederick, Sir Christopher (another archaeologist), a mysterious woman with an equally mysterious name---Kore, and an ex German officer who shot Frederick and Sir Christopher's companion on Crete during the German occupation in WWII.
Although the modern sensibilites alloyed to the island's ancient past makes for a climate fraught with electricity, I felt that Sandy's overtly feminist opinions adversely dated what could have been a more timeless narrative. Instead of everywoman, Sandy epitomizes the 70s working woman, quick with a retort that ensures an immediate knee-jerk defense reaction.
Otherwise the novel was a good read about an interesting subject.

I am amazed. Michaels' has proven that a little research can go a long way. This novel was really very good. The plot weaves together like a well-designed tapestry of mystery and intrigue. This one hooked me so well, I have a new passion for underwater archaeology."

I have been a fan of this author's Elizabeth Peters books for a long time, but this is the first of her Barbara Michaels books that I've read. It is just as exciting and suspenseful as her Peters books. I especially loved the Greek archaeological background.

In this chapter on multifrequency tympanometry Robert Margolis and Lisa Hunter, Otolaryngology Department, University of Minnesota, USA present (*) a summary of the linear theory used to interpret the immittance measurements, (*) examples of actual measurement as well as (*) the steps in the practical procedure and (*) the reliability of this method in diagnosing middle ear diseases.

It is the clearest and most detailed presentation of tympanometry I have been able to find (you can find a detailed primer on the physics of tympanometry -based on Margolis's and Hunter's chapter- by searching with Google for tympanometry + lymenet).

Children love to learn about insects and this biography of Charles Henry Turner offers them the opportunity to do that while conducting experiments as they go through the book. As a 2/3 grade teacher I am always looking for books that are interactive. This book offers simple experiments to replicate and is a great example of a children's biography. This book gives information about the history of entomology and the life of a great American scientist.

"Children of Northern Ireland" is part of "The World's Children" series which uses photographs of smiling children to "lure young readers into learning a good deal about the history, geography, and cultures of countries of hte world." In this book written by Michael Elsohn Ross with photographs by Felix Rigau, young readers will meet the children of Northern Ireland, a country that has seen its share of troubles. In fact, this book deals with "the troubles" up front, explaining the history of the land that came to be part of the United Kingdom rather than a united Ireland. The photographs show kids playing rugby, doing Irish dances, and sailing mineature yachts, while the text talks about the agriculture, industry and customs of the land. Many of the photographs show the children in the lush green Irish countryside and there are some beautiful pictures of ruins on Devenish Island. A constant theme of the book is to highlight examples of Protestant and Catholic children playing together and refusing to continue the cycle of violence. Young readers will get a sense for the beauty of Ireland and how the culture is different from their own, but they will also understand that things are quite different for children their own ages who live in Northern Ireland. Other books in this series look at children from Vietnam, Guatemala and the Tlingit as well as the grandchildren of the Lakota.

Just plain bad. From uniformative to downright incorrect, this book fails miserably to achieve it's goal. After reading this you will not be able to shape your personal sound beyond knowing the names of the knobs on various effects. I want my money back!

This book is well conceived in general scope, with the right audience, right goals, and appropriate mix of effects and amp integration. It is lacking in coverage of some key points within that scope, however. It has only two pages of coverage of capturing that sound via microphones or direct-injection into the mixer.

...What's the purpose of talking about guitar effects in isolation from each other and from the amp? Any moron can dial in individual effects in any guitar store -- meanwhile, we're left without a clue about how to bend amp tone itself through controlling eq and levels at multiple distortion stages from guitar pickups to studio monitors -- which is exactly what this book should, and doesn't, cover. It covers some aspects of "getting great guitar sounds", but is limited as far as "getting great amp and distortion sounds".

At this point, there aren't enough books on getting guitar sounds to be very critical; we have to buy what's available and try to piece together the clues. This book is the most well-conceived book, though there's much room for improvement in content. Recommended, because it has the right goal, though there's ample room for improvement.

This book is a must if you are an active stage musician. I always knew how to operate my equiptment, but never quite understood the theory behind some of the effects. After reading this book, I completely understand what the effects do to the instrument signal. It is much easier to "find" a sound I want to hear.

Also...... Don't ever pay to have your guitar/bass setup ever again. The author describes in "Normal person terms" the different steps to properly setting up a guitar. I used to pay $40 per guitar every 2 months or so....Now I do them myself and they have never sounded better.

I just purchased 2 more of these books for other musician friends! Good Luck -=Eddie=-
