This first ever translation in English from the original Italian is accompanied plates from Serlio's first editions. Thus it brings for the first time originals of Serlio's remarkable oeuvre to attention of the modern era. Through these five books Serlio had an enormous influence on the Renaissance and Baroque architecture of Northern Europe and the translators Hart and Hicks really bring this most self-effacing of Italian renaissance architects to life. A must for all those fascinated by the Italian renaissance!

The author did an excellent job at including many famous shrines throughout the world. Includes many pictures that gives the reader a more focused attention. Many sites include the famous Fatima, Lourdes, Garabandal, Guadalupe, Scottsdale Arizona and many more! Recommended for those interested in the many appartitions and the messages of Our Lady to the World. Great Book I recommend to all. I am not a Catholic, but a Lutheran, and I love this sort of stuff. God Bless!

This book is an EXCELLENT resource which lists all of the major Marian shrines worldwide. It has text which explains the history behind each site, where it is located, times when services are held at the shrine (excellent for planning visitations or pilgrammages...) and has beautiful full color photos of the interior and exterior of each site! It is the next best thing to being at each location. I reccomend this book to all who have a fascination or devotion to Mary.

This is a wonderful book for teachers, religious education instructors, parents or grandparents. It is all about our traditons if we were brought up in the liturgical Christian Church (Roman Catholic, Angelican etc.). Here in a wonderful timely manner one finds great pictures to illustrate timely information and instruction. the stories not only tell the whys of many of our customs and beliefs, but tie theses in with our life today. We hear about one of the Saints and t then see some activity we can do now to best capture the meaning or truth that he or she represents. I liked the way the author is not afraid to tell the old traditions, there is no watering down of our beautiful traditions, yet everything fits in with contempory life and can be applied. I feel that these pages, all which can be torn out and duplicated so the children can all have one to take home are a very valuable teaching tool. Although I bought the book to use with my three young grandchildren, it sure appeals to the "teacher in me" and I am ordering 2 more copies for my husband who is a full time Church music director at a large parish where he also teaches music in the school and also one for a friend who just started teching in a Catholic School. I am glad that these books are here to help young people love and understand our traditions . The book is beautifully done and a great teaching tool.

This book is a virtual treasure trove of ideas for how to approach many aspects of the Catholic faith with your kids. It also raises many issues that a parent will have to deal with in each age group. There are suggestions for helping toddlers appreciate the Mass, for example. Or for helping a youngster come to grips with death and the afterlife. It's a short book, but very well-organized and well presented and is sure to be a reference in my home for a long time.

A tiny little book with the wisdom of an encyclopedia! Clear, concise, intelligent. It presents arguments one might never have thought of on one's own; these arguments definitely hold water. It makes a good case against the standard argument: "Jesus didn't have female apostles because he bowed to the standards of his time." A must read for anyone who wants to know WHY women will not be priests.

The World of Rome : An Introduction to Roman Culture
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (1997)
Amazon base price: $70.00
Average review score:

Most Roman reference books seem to present the information in a very muddling way. The World of Rome is a must-have for all those who want to learn about Rome in a progressive, easy to use way. The book is divided into sections on life, religion and is particularly helpful in understanding the poltical systems and leaders. The book covers the period from 1000Bc to 476Ad making it an essential item for the ancient historian who is looking for reference without wanting to spend hours looking through waffle.

This is an excellent book on Roman fortifications and garrison troops, and I recommend it highly.
