Good, but not McWilliams' best work
I picked this up partly because of its price--$.at the Bookworm--and partly because of my favorable impression of McWilliams from his Ain't Nobody's Business If You Do. The writing style is reminiscent of that book, but the topic--self-help for people who want more money--is more obscure, more abstract, than the treatise on libertarianism. In fact, a majority of this book would probably send most realists screaming. It's a "I feel good, you feel good" soft of namby-pamby new-age book. But, surprisingly, there is a gem of information contained herein if you can stomach the bonhominie. The sections regarding the setting of one's purpose and one's goals can be useful, as is the section regarding how one should "keep score" on their progress towards their goals.

If anything, this book was good for jump-starting my thinking about what I want to do with my life. I think I've gotten side-tracked in the past year, what with finally obtaining one goal (my bachelor's degree), and quickly moving through another (a better job). While I am happy to have achieved both of these goals, I have to be reminded that they are ancilliary to my purpose to become a self-sustaining writer. They may help in the long run, but I cannot rest on them. There are also several tools here that can enable one to help concentrate on goals, as well as a questionnaire to determine if the goal you have chosen is actually what you want.

Very important message for our times, for any person.
The message is that there is much more to life than just monetary gain. It is a terrific book for anyone that is searching for meaning, recovering after a loss or trauma, or frustrated with society's value system. The book is filled with quotes from all types of intellectuals, comedians and other profound speakers throughout the ages. It is very entertaining.

Absolutely brilliant
This book is not only a whole new approach to money, it is an entirely new approach to self-direction and personal growth. Peter McWilliams is absolutely brilliant, thought-provoking, and enlightening. This book is one of a kind when it comes to personal growth- far far better than anything Stephen Covey could ever write.

The Opium War, 1840-1842: Barbarians in the Celestial Empire in the Early Part of the Nineteenth Century and the War by Which They Forced Her Gates A

Average review score:

This is one of the most frustrating books I've ever read.
Peter Fay's book on the Opium War is one of the most detailed studies of the period between 1838-1842 one can find at anything like the price, and would be a valuable resource except for one major flaw--there is no time-line given, and dates are provided, at most, with day and month, not year. This may seem like an insignificant thing, but given that correspondence took at least six months in one direction from China to England, and that the war was taking place with sailing ships up and down most of China's coast, it quickly becomes impossible to tell, either from the footnotes or the text, what year precisely specific events happened. Since so few dates are given at all, it is impossible to get a good sense of the exact sequence of events, particularly as the fighting part of the war heated up. When the book is next released, it should have a time line!

Authoritative and Elegant
Nearly three decades after it was first published, Fay's book remains the best single volume on the Opium War, and one of the best books on China in the 19th century. It is easy to read, but is scholarly enough for the most fastidious. Unlike the other reviewer I had no particular difficulties with the timeline, although that can be a problem with any historical narrative. Be advised that this is a narrative history and can be read with joy by those who find social or economic histories tedious, but the background of the war is covered in particular detail as well. Fay is not a professional sinologist, and came to this book through his studies of the East India Company, but the book seems none the worse for his wide knowledge. It was recommended to me by some very distinguished historians of China, and their enthusiasm was justified. It is not a weighty tome, like those of Mary Wright or Vincent Shih on China in the 19th century, but it is authoritative on its subject, and like the best of Fairbank, it is great fun to read. Can one say better things about a book? If you are interested in the Opium War, Qin dynasty history, imperialism, or just like reading a good narrative about a war, please indulge yourself-- and read this book.

Anger Management Help
This workbook teaches everyday skills and techniques on how to manage anger build-up, reactions toward anger (positive reactions versus negative reactions), how not to turn anger inward ("stuffing it"), etc.I found that this book, in conjunction with cognitive techniques for thinking really dissipated my anger level to one of tolerance instead of blowing up over almost everything that goes wrong.I would suggest this book to anyone who feels that anger gets in the way of living a happy, rewarding life. Especially for folks that normally react with anger to either avoid other feelings or get angry over things that are not in their control.

Excellent Reference
As an architectural book editor, I find this book an excellent reference for biographical data, architectural terms, and historical context. It's concise enough to give me just the bit of information I need when doing a fact-check or making sure a term is used properly.

Interactive and entertaining format.
While other books on castles written for children may contain more substantial amounts of information, Mystery History of a Medieval Castle is great for kids who cannot or will not perform sustained reading. After reading the main text of each page, the reader has the opportunity to solve puzzles, answer questions which help develop critical thinking skills, and put together clues to find a villain. There is even a board game at the end of the book. Other texts may be used to supplement this one if more in-depth or broader information on the Middle Ages is required. This book is great as a fun activity when used in conjunction with classroom materials and Internet activities.

Long-haul read, but very effective for me.
I picked up the book in a library, and have been looking for a copy to own ever since. The book painstakingly talks you through the argument that anger is not in itself bad, but that anger is a response which at some level is a choice.

The chapters take you through the process of identifying the patterns of thoughts which trigger anger, such as blaming, globalisation (making a mountain out of a molehill) etc. Once these triggers have been identified, the book offers a number of strategies to cope with them.

The book emphasises that by controlling your response to the trigger thoughts you can choose not to be angry. It's hard work, and no quick-fix, but I found it more helpful than anything else I've tried.

As a bit of background, I am a happly married family man with two kids, but I found I had this bullying side to my nature which was out of all proportion to the stimuli received. It's still there, but the techniques in the book kind of slow down and separate the stages of becoming angry in this way, and so have given me a chance to choose a different way of coping with the stimuli.

Anyway, it's a book I would recommend.

Not your average Anger book!!!
This book doesn't get 5 stars for literary merit, but for the simple, but shocking idea that anger is not real. As I understand what they say, anger is the label we learn to put on a host of other feelings(that we don't learn the names for, or how to talk about them or deal with them in any way but simmering, screaming, hitting, etc.)from the time we're born...then, watch out! Feelings of frustration, feeling treatened(two of many possibilities for us to express "anger")make us feel stressed, and we can only stand so much of that, so we do various, often anti-social,things to diminish the feeling. Even though, as the authors point out, we cannot feel guilty WHILE venting anger, afterwards we do, and a vicious circle is sustained as long as we don't go far enough into what we're feeling and thinking, we just react, either outwardly or mentally and keep attacking ourselves. For example, a frequent occurrance for me was wanting to smash into other drivers who came up behind me too fast on the street...after I read this book and relived that situation, it was clear that I felt my life was threatened by their behavior...clearly,getting irate in my car wasn't controlling their behavior, but it was harming me...now I can get out of their way and keep my cool and protect myself. This book will help anyone who'e tired of the same old knee-jerk reaction to things.Hopefully, we'll understand it and pass on the ability of decipher our feelings to our children! Ever see a baby crying really hard, after an injection or when they're really hungry, and hear an "adult" say,"Whoa, he's really angry!"? Not! Read this book if you have the courage to learn more, and understand that the people we learned from just didn't know.

This book on anger really works!
Curtis.Neimeister@hpinc.com from Tulsa, OK., USA Nov. 5, 1999 I consider this to be an excellent book on the subject of anger! Why? Because it helped me!

I read the reviews of this book on Amazon, and I am pleased to say I am one of the extremists. I thought it was well written and direct, not clouded with excessive rhetoric or "powdered sugar". It places the responsibility for anger right where it can be fixed, on me. It does not involve itself with painstaking research into the "Why" of anger, although that may come out through the use of the Anger Journal. It does contain many suggested causal areas, and my mind was quick to point out my guilty participation. I have gone from multiple angry outbursts per day to one or so mild angry responses per week in less than two weeks. Learning about "Shoulds" and "Blamers" can do that! And was I surprised to learn that I was contributing to my cholesterol problem by being angry! Anger was killing me!

It is behavioral in nature, and for those looking for, and brave enough to use, a path to correcting anger as a response to problems, this is your book! I strongly recommend it!

Below Average Work on Tiger I
I consider myself a collector of Tiger I books and I have read a lot on this awesome tank over the years. This title by Roger Ford is somewhat disappointing. The content is shallow and the illustrations are sub-standard. I have seen cutaways of tanks from many books but the one in this book is just a joke. I guess this book is aimed at those who have no previous knowledge of this tank. Even another book from the same publisher MBI on T-34 deserves 3 stars.

If you are a serious Tiger I historian or enthusiast, don't bother to buy this book. You may look for the new book from Jean Restayn "Tiger I on the Eastern Front", which is a much better presentation of Tiger I.

A good starter book on the Tiger tank of WWII
This book is well written and researched with plenty of b/w photographs and detailed information on the history and development of the German Tiger tank of WWII. Less impressive are the discussions on the role and tactics of the Tiger tank in combat. One plus is the many rare and unusual photographs in the book, some of which I have not seen anywhere else.

But I have to mention that the accompanying illustrations are few and rather poorly done. I would have liked more and better illustrations since the b/w photographs don't really show the different paint schemes and markings well. Also, the description of the Tiger's armament is too brief - there are no detailed pictures of the 88mm gun or the different ammuntion types.

Overall it would be a good buy as a first book but if you already have books on the topic, there probably won't be anything new here except perhaps the excellently done history and development of the Tiger.

A GOOD LOOK AT THE TIGER I
The Tiger is surely the most famous tank ever produced to this date, and Roger Ford has done a yeoman's job of outlining all the attributes that made the Tiger such a fearsome weapon while also hitting the behemoth's weak points. Ford's book features many excellent b/w photographs of generally high quality, showing the tiger in production, battle, and in several instances, destruction. There are several schematics and even a couple pages devoted entirely to the Tiger's camoflauge schemes, and Ford goes over the tank's technical data in considerable detail, giving the reader a good idea of what the Tiger's designers went through. The book's major weakness is an almost total lack of tactical history, as Ford chooses to focus instead on the Tiger's overall strategic role in the grand scheme of WW2. More detailed accounts of tank-vs.-tank encounters or even interviews with surviving participants would have made this a complete text. As it is, "The Tiger Tank" is still a quality book, and one I definitely recommend to any armored warfare enthusiast.

To ECT or not To ECT
Having suffered from bi-polar disorder some forty-seven years, I take great exception to Dr. Breggin's book. Dr. Breggin, do you know of what you speak. I do. I have received some 300 ECT's , insulin therapy and quite a few other treatments of the "barbaric" variety. I wouldn't be writing this review, nor the father of five very productive children if if weren't for these treatments. I served as an advocate for ECT before my state's legislature in 1998 when the state was trying to "outlaw" these treatments. They didn't, incidentally. No, I would have preferred other forms of therapy, but in my particular case they have offered prompt solutions to depressions which would have completely debilitated me and prevented my being able to function altogether. So I suggest the good "doc" take a few of these treatments himself and get back in the real enlightened world of mental health treatment. As for psychotropic drugs, I'll gladly keep taking mine, until someone comes along with the ability to "ward off evil spirits".

THANK GOD FOR HEROIC, COURAGEOUS DR. PETER BREGGIN
Dr. Breggin continues to be the critcally needed conscience of fraud psychiatry with its junk science and fraud theories promoted as proven science on a naive, gullible public brainwashed by the current nazi doctors, creators of the Holocaust, all genocide after practicing their murderous arts on those labelled mentally ill in the nazi era, which they used in the wars against women, children, blacks and any other powerless victims they could exploit to further their evil fraud, greed and power as the USA BIG BOTHER organization funded and promoted by their cohorts BIGPHARMA, the noble, courageous Dr. Peter Breggin exposes with fact after fact and all too many real studies. I feel sorry for those brainwashed by these evil frauds as I was in the past unable to do their own research like me as a Division scholar librarian. Dr. Breggin has a growing number of like minded ETHICAL whistleblowers fighting at great costs to expose these evil child killer psychiatrists with their current horrific assaults against humanity. Fortunately, ethical neurologists like Dr. Fred Baughman and others horrified by the psychiatric fraud against innocent babies no less to kill them at the youngest age have joined the noble Dr. Breggin in exposing the absolute FRAUD of BIGPHARMA funded psychiatrists, the APA, NAMI, CHADD, the dishonest Surgeon General, the FDA, the medical journals and all other government and other agencies getting rich and gaining much totalitarian power, their real job always, and profit to rob their victims of their minds, bodies, spirits and ALL DUE PROCESS AND CIVIL rights as "WHORES OF THE COURT" in our so called democratic USA. Like Dr. Baughman ask any of the BIGPHARMA backed frauds above to cite the exact scientific evidence, journal articles, proof, documentation that proves the evil lie brainwashing biomedical reductionist THEORIES perpetrated as proven science as he did the Surgeon General, psychiatrists, the APA and others and either he got NO RESPONSE or weak admissions that such PROOF does not exist YET after billions of wasted tax and other funds for many years to perpetrate this destructive fraud against unsuspecting victims trusting them as the doctors they pretend to be with their ongoing MAD DOCTORING as Dr. Breggin exposes here and all too clearly elsewhere along with a growing number of outraged ethical people within and without this evil profession that MUST be eliminated once and for all before we are a destroyed nation of zombies with no brains and cripples in their evil dictatorship they have almost totally accomplishied in the USA and are trying to inflict on other countries worldwide where the so called mentally ill there have proven they recover without this evil treatment while their psychiatric victims in the USA often do not and Dr. Breggin exposes why in this critically needed book and his others to save victims once they catch on to the evil fraud and destruction of their lives by these evil witch hunters in the guise of help. Dr. Breggin exposes why Dr. Loren Mosher, another famous and successful psychiatrist with impeccable credentials resigned from the APA in disgust for its incestuous relationship with the huge drug industry for greed and profit at the cost of countless lives, babies and children no less, to show their evil has no limits. Read this and other of Dr.Breggin's and similar antipsychiatry books and sites and know why these evil fraud so called doctors are the only ones who need massive security and guards because they fear their nonviolent protesting "former not so satisfied "patients" with their destroyed lives or survival at untold costs. I pity anyone who has fallen for the evil fraud of ADD, bipolar, depression and other so called fraud unproven junk science promoted as proven diseases and proven brain imbalances to show these people have no ethics, conscience or concern about the TRUTH whatever and freely repeat these evil lies in government documents, medical journals by BIGPHARMA with psychiatrist ghost writers exposed despite all evidence to the contrary. Dr. Peter Breggin like Dr. Baughman exposes that any so called brain damage or differences they find and use fraudulently as evidence for their fraud is iatrogenic or toxic drug damage from their toxic drugs and treatments after they inflict their fraudulent victim blaming misdiagnoses when they know all too well that anyone they trap in their webs of deceit have been abused and traumatized or have serious live problems they exploit to totally destroy the victim seeking help, making them helpless, trapped and less able to escape or cope, a shocking horrible betrayal and exploitation of people in crisis. YOU MUST READ THIS AND ALL DR. BREGGIN's CRITICAL BOOKS exposing this evil fraud and all those ethical whistleblowers you can be sure BIGPHARMA and their psyhchiatric cohorts and drug funded organizations like NAMI passing the buck of their evil, bad parenting or attempts to eliminate competitors for money and power as they have historically and will do all to attack and discredit as they spout their junk pseudoscience and pretend it is proven fact as usual since the truth has no meaning from a group like the APA that openly admits to "dancing with the devil," BIGPHARMA, they admit they must then allow to "call the shots" and they sure do as Dr. Breggin exposes here and elsewhere. See his excellent website and other courageous honest ethical heroes courageously exposing this evil fraud at great cost to themselves. They like other heroes deserve our support. BUY THIS BOOK and avoid the mental death profession like the plague. BEEN THERE WITH PREVIOUS SUCCESSFUL CAREER AND LIFE DESTROYED BY A NAZI DOCTOR in about 15 minutes with a life death sentence, a bunchof toxic drugs sure to make me crazy when I wasn't then, real doctoring; no, MAD DOCTORING FROM THE REAL CRAZIES with "delusional dominating disorder" as exposed by Dr. Paula Caplan in THEY SAY YOUR CRAZY, another excellent exposure among a growing number protesting pschychiatric evil and fraud.

A Personal Experience with Antipsychotics
This book helped my son, but unfortunately the information it contains came to me too late to help a woman friend whose brain was severely damaged by neuroleptic drugs. My son was taking a popular anti-depressant administered by a Psychaitrist. He was able to get out of bed which was some improvement in his condition and was limping along through life when I told him of the possible destructive effects and essential ineffectualness of these psychaiatric drugs which attack symptoms only. He immediately fired his psychaitrist whose sessions consisted merely of asking him if he felt better, contacted a psychologist and started a course of talk therapy. There were times when he hated me, times when he hated his mother, but now he is doing fine without the need for drugs. I have done considerable research on the findings outlined in the book. The National Library of Health website is full of articles confirming the incredibly destructive effects of these drugs on a significant percentage of patients.
