Great Personal History
An excellent book in not only the telling of Civil War history, but of immersing oneself in the characters of Roger and Sara Pryor. Their hardships and sufferings were shared by a generation during those calamitous years and the way they bore them was truly inspiring. Their faith in God always guided them in their duties and responsibilities to each other and their fellow man. Their self-denial, especially Sara's, struck me deeply. This is a remarkable lesson in the contrasting of cultures of how people of high moral fiber lived then to how we live now.

Excellent
I usually read fiction. I read this book on a recommendation and loved it. It reads like a novel, but is all the more touching because it is true. he Pryors must have been remarkable people.

It's a Grabber!
I buy a lot of books. It's my addiction. Only difference between a book addiction and drinking is I still have the book with me the next morning and no headache despite lapping up the intoxicating verbiage all night.

Most Civil War books I read are pedestrian, fulfilling a utilitarian need, but oh sometimes, I stumble on a page turner where the writing is so extraordinary it breathes life and color into even small and inconsequential events. Though I resisted it for several years, "Class of 1846" by John Waugh turned out to be a page turner and I adored his Re-electing Lincoln as well.

This week I discovered "Surviving the Confederacy" Waugh's new book. Sara and Roger Pryor are the heart of the book, which celebrates the vigor and vinegar of southerners as war promised better things and then failed to bring them the promised tomorrow. The Pryors were the quintessential, noble, charming and eloquent southerners, perfect examples of Virginia's gracious and cultured society. Roger was an author, lawyer, general and ardent secessionist while Sara was his devoted helpmate. Just as it should be! But not quite. The beautiful Sara was different from the ordinary belle. She was a well educated and independent woman with a talent for writing and definitely a survivor. Sara managed to navigate the horror of war and come out a survivor.

I was already familiar with Sara Pryor's writing and was thrilled to find a book in which she was the focal point. Sara's book "My Day: Reminiscences of a Long Life" has always been one of my favorites. Her plaintive memory of the long siege at Petersburg was filled with the immediacy of the moment and yet carried a tiny seed of optimism void of recriminations, "With all our starvation we never ate rats, mice, or mule meat. We managed to exist on peas, bread, and sorghum. We could buy a little milk, and we mixed it with a drink made from roasted and ground corn. The latter, in the grain, was scarce. Mr. Campbell's children picked up the grains wherever the army horses were fed, washed, dried, and pounded them for food."

Surviving the Confederacy is definitely a grabber. Waugh's writing style and perfect pacing, which captured my imagination in his two previous books is just as riveting and vivid in Surviving the Confederacy. "Sara's general impression of her growing-up years was of gardens . . . For Sara it was as if fairies, mounted on butterflies, visited each flower and painted it in the night. She was a dreamer. It was a time when living rooms were called parlors, and when the grown-ups gathered there and talked of politics or religion or slavery. At such times Sara retired into the inner chambers of her imagination." [pg 15]. How can you resist?

Absolutely bewitching!
I wasn't sure what to expect with this anthology, but I found myself enthralled from beginning to end. Nnedi Okorafor's "Crossroads", Seth Lindberg's "Atropos", and James Dorr's "Madness" were special delights.

Stories for all tastes
A great mix of chilling, horrifying, and otherwise entertaining stories.

Very Satisfying!
This is a great compilation of magic, madness, culture and creativity. All of the stories were pretty satisfying, some of them terrifying! There are some writers here that are going to go places. Watch for the authors of the two longest pieces, Nnedi Okorafor (her story is called Crossroads) and James S. Dorr (he wrote a story called Madness).

The Andersonville Diary & Memoirs of Charles Hopkins 1st New Jersey Infantry

Compelling story of a place few could even imagine...
This book conveys the words of a young Union soldier who was captured and taken to the Southern prison they called Andersonville. This detailed account taken from the diary of Charles Hopkins tells a story of survival and horror. It makes you imagine trying to survive in a disease riddened prison with barely any food or fresh water. Read this book because it will be one you will never forget

Involving, enlightening, and uplifting--a "must read"!
This first person account provides a wealth of insight into the day-to-day rituals of "life" in one of the most forbidding Civil War prison camps. Throughout his trials, however, Charles Hopkins never loses his faith in humanity and even manages to endure with a sense of humor. His uplifting story bears testimony to the strength of the human spirit under fire. Hopkins' style of writing is descriptive and conversational, and works well with the enlightening information and photos supplied by editors Mr. Styple and Mr. Fitzpatrick. I highly recommend this book to all who are interested in the Civil War and in becoming acquainted with one of its many unsung heroes.

Gary D.Crossman Retired American

Best book on U.S. military awards -
This book sets a new standard for medals books. In one volume it contains information which would require a stack of other books, and presents it in high quality full color. The entire two hundred year history of U.S. military awards is beautifully illustrated, along with hard-to-find information on numbering systems, cases, documents, and eligibility. Highly recommended; worth every penny of its cost.

A Field Guide to Eastern Forests: North America (Peterson Field Guide Series)

If you can only buy one field guide, buy this one.
Eastern Forests is a good field guide for both experts and beginners. Makes a great gift for young naturalists. This book not only provides identification means; it also answers odds and end questions about why plants and animals do different things. Everything from newt behavior to how weather affects bird migration is covered in this guide.

A Great Buy, Very Interesting
This is a great field guide that covers many aspects of forests East of the Great Plains. Although it covers many common species of both animal and plant, it is not overly helpful for positively identifying individual species; and if one wants that, you are better off with a more specific field guide (i.e., Eastern Birds). It does, however, detail the workings of a forest and accompanies this fascinating text with 53 color plates, 80 color photos and many black and white drawings. In the first few chapters, it demonstrates the different forest types through indicator species; and it details the process of Old Field succesion, and the animals and plants that come and go as the process progresses. In the last chapters adaptation, and seasonal patterns are covered. I would highly reccommend this field guide for any one who would like to know how a forest works.

A Must Have for All James Bond Fans
Director John Glen tells of his experience with the James Bond film series strait up. At the helm of five of the films as director Glen pulls no punches and offers great insight into the creative efforts of the whole Bond film team. This is a great book and even more so if you are a James Bond fan. I really like this book. There is really no gloss here. This is really about what went into making these films while Albert R. Broccoli was still alive and producing them. I highly recommend this book.

Great book for Bond fans and film students!
I have waited for months to get this book and believe me, it was worth the wait! John Glen, who directed 5 James Bond movies, takes us on an incredible journey into the world of 007, filmmaking, and his relationships between his cast and crew. Starting out as an editor, Glen tells the story on how Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli gave him the opportunity of a lifetime when he asked him to direct 1981's For Your Eyes Only. Learn some of the reasons why Timothy Dalton's 1989 Bond film Licence to Kill was not only a flop with American audiences, but why it was also his last 007 film. Glen even tells us who he thinks should be the next Bond as well as his opinions on each of the five actors in the role. This book is a must for any Bond fan or any film student. Thanks Mr. Glen for a wonderful read! I couldn't put it down.

Excellent, soothing and healing book
Forgiveness - something we all have had to do sometime in our life. John Roger really helps facilitates the healing we all need to do on this issue. Forgiveness of self is really expounded upon and had a profound effect on me. This book is full of compassion, wit and wisdom. It is one of those books that you will want to refer to again and again. Just open to any page and let the love and wisdom pour over you and heal you. This book is indeed a healing book. There is a "gem" contained on each and every page. God's eternal message of love and forgiveness is lovingly portrayed and no where is blame or guilt to be found.

Teaching one with love and compassion, we are guided to walk a path of love and not a path of revenge and hate. I just finished Joel Rothschild's book, Signals, where he, too talks about forgiveness and how if one does not forgive, the anger and hate can fester inside us and cause disease. As John Roger states, "Don't judge, forgive and then forget it."

"As you change behavior, you change the emotion. As you change the emotion, you change the thinking. As you change the thinking, you're getting wisdom. As you gain wisdom, you go into forgiveness."

This is an EXCELLENT book to bring you back into forgiveness with gentleness. Often, we are the roughest with ourselves. Do something good for yourself - go out and get this book and be prepared to have your heart opened. Let the tears fall and open the way for cleansing to begin. You will NOT be disappointed. One of the best books I have read in a long time on forgiveness. I highly recommend this book!

excellent guide for letting go of the past
J-R has done it again!!! In easy to understand and practical words, he shares with us ways of releasing our limitations and getting on with our lives. Not only is forgiveness of others covered, but forgiveness of self. This is a wonderful book for anyone making a fresh start in their lives!! Highly reccomended!

Great for beginning and experienced osteopaths.
This is the long awaited basic textbook for osteopathic medicine. It is surprisingly complete, covering philosophy, history, research, and manipulative techniques. The beginning osteopathic student may find it most useful for its practical discussion on the techniques--high velocity, myofascial release, etc. I believe it is also helpful in standardizing our terminology, which will make it easier when taking board exams or talking with colleagues from other osteopathic schools. It includes contributors well known within the osteopathic community, including Michael and William Kuchera, Melicien Tettambel, Eileen DiGiovanna, and many others. As a family practice resident I frequently turn to this textbook first when I want to know more about how to treat a patient or when preparing lectures for students and housestaff.

The osteopathic manipulative therapy bible!
This text is actually required reading for most if not all osteopathic medical students. It is a 'textbook', however, and hence completely (sometimes exhaustively!) comprehensive. But it is easy to read so that anyone with an interest in OMT will get a methodic how-to for myriad techniques, also a thorough history of osteopathic medicine to boot! One of my OMT professors at the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine wrote or co-wrote a few of the chapters so of course, I think those are the best! If you are looking for an educational approach to learning manipulation and the reasons behind it, this is a valuable resouce.

incredible mind!
i saw the exihibit of his work at the museum of modern art in S.F. it was magnificent! i could have spent days going over all the detail - i got so engrossed in every detail of his work and writings about his life..that i went back a second day ....what a sad and wonderful life this man had.

Rizzoli one of the great artists of the 20th century.
In terms of originality, vision, skill, and dedication A.G. Rizzoli may eventually stand as one of the true masters of the 20th century. An extravagant claim, perhaps, but when I compare Rizzoli with Picasso, Dali, Klee, Miro, or Duchamp I cannot help but feel that they would have all welcomed him into their august company as a true original who has expanded the creative realm of possibilites in art. Of equal interest is the manner in which Rizzoli, faced with a desolate life of lonliness due to his inability to function in a social realm, or for that matter a sexual one, took these circumstances and created an alternate reality of sublime beauty and wonder. This superb book allows all of us to share in this utopian vision and, for at least a little while, daydream, ponder, and wonder at this remarkable vision of an alternate reality. The authors, curators and restorers who have brought Rizzoli's life work to light are to be highly commended as preserving and exposing this incredible and wonderful work.

Absolutely fabulous!
I am so bummed that this book is out of print. I read it in the summer of 1995, while houseboating at Lake Powell. Even though I'm not a kayaker, I love being out on the water, and this book really made me want to take up kayaking. The pictures are fabulous, the stories are wonderful! I especially remember the stories about kayaking with the ships off the coast of California, and with the orcas in Alaska. If this book ever comes back into print, I want a copy of it. In the meantime, I guess I'll just keep watching the used book stores!

This is a beautiful book.
The author has experienced many paddling adventures all over the West Coast of North America and down into Mexico. A fantastic photographer, Rogers jams this book full of beautiful and inspiring photographs along with interesting narrative. From the pounding surf off the Washington coast to warm, quiet lagoons in the Baja, Rogers takes you along for quite a trip.
