A unique and exceptionally well written historical novel.
Uprising At Dawn is the story of a dangerous discovery by Gideon as he moves through the swamp in search of a hog and overhears three slaves plotting an uprising at nearby Briarstone Plantation. Shocked by their plan to burn local white farms, Gideon rushes to inform his good friend Emily who is staying at the endangered plantation. Where Bugles Call ( between two flags series book # 2)
This is a very good series of books. I could hardly put them down! They are very well written, and seem to be accurate. They are set during the Civil War, so if you like books during that time period, and you are 12yrs-14yrs I highly recommend these books!

Mission as a Writer
I discovered my mission statement as a writer in the first chapter. This is great, to see the ways that God calls writers. Obviously, God likes writers, He used them for the whole Bible.

Good views
This book is great! I really liked the three different views, a boy who lives in the South and isn't bothered by slavery, a Union girl forced to live in the South, and a slave trying to get to freedom. READ IT!!

Galen Finds New Faith -- and a Home
The author took the account of David's victory over Goliath from I Samuel 17 and wrote a story about two boys who could have watched the battle. Galen, the Philistine boy and Reuben, the Israelite were about the same age and each loyal to his God. Reuben befriended Galen and after some exciting adventures, Galen finds a new faith - and a home, The book is designed for ages 8 and up.

Excellent Children-YA book on Civil War Problems
I wanted to preview Roddy's books on the Civil War and chose this one first. I enjoyed the victories after families had been torn apart by different loyalties and how they came to grips with them.

This particular book deals with a widower trying to cope with a farm alone - and her young son, Gideon. It chronicles the divided home of the wealthy cousin of Emily Lodge. She postpones her own move to safety and happiness to help the slave owner-cousin even though she opposes his beliefs. In this capacity, she is allowed to teach illiterate children to read.

Slaves escape, soldiers are wounded and running. Families are split up while others try to stay emotionally together while physically apart. Faith in God and love of family are tested because of the opposite beliefs of both sides of the war.

There is a lot of sadness, suspense and danger involved in the story telling and I believe children age 10 - 12 would get a pretty clear and acurate picture of family life during the Civil War. It causes the reader to want to read the entire series.

better than book 2
this book annoyed me because laurel kept saying, "I can take care of myself" I got the picture. She was a bit frustrating by the end. Other than that, the mystery and suspence at first was good, then you figured it out and it was awfully suspenseful. read it only if you feel like being annoyed at laurel's bossiness.
