Good overview of the topic aimed at the trustee
This book offers an excellent overview of the management of assets for non-profit organizations. For those unfamiliar with investment jargon, it may be a tough read, however all the modern approaches are described. One criticism may be the lack of spending policy options which may be useful to many.

Conceptual Clarity in Charity
Surprisingly interesting to read. The authors use reasonably sized sentences. You absorb important concepts about endowment management without realising that you are reading a technical book. The charts and graphics, coupled with real life examples, make this book come alive. A good buy for people who are involved in Endowment management at non-profits as trustees, directors or accountants.

A little bit of colour in text and graphics would help, though.

How to Do It the Right Way
This book is an excellent reference for a foundation or endowment board member trustee. The process of investing is laid out for the reader to follow in detail. This is the best reference book that I have found on the subject of investing foundation and endowment assets.

This is a satisfying introduction to the poetry of Jeffers.
The poem "Tor House" epitomizes Robinson Jeffers' poetry. The introduction of the book gives an idea of the personalities of Una and Robinson Jeffers. This book contains the poem "The Roan Stallion" that began Jeffers' fame

An excellent collection of shorter works
This is an excellent way to begin reading Jeffers. Contains the poem "Self-Criticism in February", a great self-explication of his own struggles with poetry.

A Portable, Usable 'Child's Garden of Verses'
Everyone knows Robert Louis Stevenson; everyone has at least one of the myriad books of his poetry. There are some stunningly illustrated collections of his poetry out now, notably two by Thomas Kincaide, among others. But how many of us have actually read all or most of his work? I'm guilty as charged.

This smaller, quieter version of Stevenson's poetry helped me finally, actually read all the Garden poetry. True, the illustrations are spare, but delightfully accurate. My children (7 and 10) were not as mesmerized by this book as they are by others with fanciful graphics, illustrations and larger type to accompany the poetry.

Still, this small book found its way into my purse to be used for waiting moments, e.g. at the orthodontist, doctor, and also to my bedside, where it's shear diminutive size did not dissuade me from reading "for only a minute or two." And within Stevenson's words and language lie the ferment of creative pictures. I liked to have my children close their eyes while I read short poems to 'force' them to use only their mind's eye.

I thoroughly enjoyed the adventures, moods, and images Stevenson conjures and at long last can understand why his poetry remains so classic.

A beautiful melding of words and pictures
Most everyone knows that Robert Louis Stevenson was sickly, both as a child and as an adult, and the happy result for the reading public was his nearly feverish flights of imagination. Here, in an edition of his classic "A Child's Garden of Verses," that fever is complemented in spades by the fantastical illustrations of English artist Joanna Isles.

Isles uses an arsenal of utterly frivolous flowers, borders, insects, birds, kings and queens, fairies, and more to expand upon the imagination exhibited in Stevenson's poems. The children in these pictures are depicted as being in charge, being at one with their environment, and being delighted to be alive.

Some of the illustrations hint at the influence of artists more famed than Isles (Henri Rousseau appears to be a special favorite of hers--see the illustration for "The Unseen Playmate," in which a boy lies down in weeds that might have sprung from the edge of Rousseau's painting "The Dream"). Using both primary colors and pastels, Isles creates a world within the world of Stevenson's verse. The marriage of the two is a happy one.

The Child's Garden: Sothing words for a child
When I was younger, well 5 actually, I had the chicken pox. This was one of my mom's favorite books. The words in the poetry just soothed me. It seemed like the author, Robert Louis Stevenson, knew exactly what I was going through.

You can't forget about the little toy soldiers (a poem) at your feet because when you are sick for days, you can imagine all kinds of things in your mind. The curtains billow like sails, the bedpost is your anchor. I sat there in bed and just floated away with the fun of having someone to share my illness. It seemed like a had a friend right there with me.

I loved the pictures too. The little kids are old fashioned and it made me laugh because the boys wore silly clothes, but they fit the time period, my mom said.

I love this book and keep it by my bed when I need to be relaxed.

The Poetry of E.A. Robinson (Modern Library)

Mr.Flood's Party For One
Upon reading Robinson's poem Mr. Flood's Party, we found yet another pathetic character relying on unconventional mechanisims to ease the pain. Like Richard Corey, Mr. Eben Flood is hollow inside, an outsider to the world around him. In Robinson's poem, we find him atop a hill while drowning himself in the mixtures of alcohol. There's a sense of dark humor in Eben saying, "Drink to the bird." "He raised up to the light the jug that he had gone so far to fill," This displays the mere fact that the man is in solitude and desperately trying to humor himself in order to fill the void within his existance. We feel that this poem is well written because of the use of dialogue to heighten the interest. The symbolism of opening and shutting doors parallels with the life of Eben Flood and the friends and opportunities he has lost along the way. The techniques of the inconsistant rhyme scheme that Robinson uses craft the demeanor of a drunk.

DJ Lucky
Robinson's disturbing works are best exemplified in his poem "Richard Cory". Richard Cory, in Robinson's own wods, "was a gentleman from sole to crown/Clean favored, and imperially slim". He represents the perfect gentleman of the era. All of those who knew of him admired and wanted to emulate him, "So on we worked, and waited for the light". They were willing to work for the material possessions which Cory had acheived. However, Robinson ends his work with a grim, chilling turn of events. "And Richard Cory, one calm summer night/Went home and put a bullet through his head". This unexpected conclusion reflects all of Robinson's work in that it is stunningly original, and was ahead of its time. His work seems to foreshadow many of today's publications, in that they reach for a similar effect of shock or surprise (evident in many books and movies). Robinson deviated from the norm, and doing so created an entirely new theme in American literature.

The Best Edition of Edwin Arlington Robinson's Poems
Edwin Arlington Robinson wrote many of the most memorable and heartbreaking poems of the twentieth century, including such masterpieces as "Richard Cory," "Miniver Cheevy," "Reuben Bright," "Ben Jonson Entertains a Man From Stratford," and "Mr. Flood's Party." A master of the Petrarchan sonnet as well as many other metrical and rhymed forms, Robinson had an ear like no other (note the initials of his name), and possessed a unique insight into the sadness and nobility of his fellow human beings. Other poets may instruct and delight us; Robinson also frequently moves us to tears. Robert Mezey, the editor of this volume, has writtten a superb introductory essay, providing the reader with essential and fascinating details about Robinson's life that enhance one's understanding of the poems while setting Robinson's career and remarkable achievement squarely in the context of his times. More importantly, Mezey has expertly chosen the very best of Robinson's poetry for this volume, and he rounds out the selection with excerpts from Robinson's own letters and other writers' critical appraisals of Robinson's work. Included here is a rather wily introduction to Robinson's KING JASPER by Robert Frost, who owed a great debt in his own poetry to Robinson's richly nuanced plain style. Mezey's handsome and wonderfully edited volume is the best introduction available to the work of one of America's greatest and most neglected poets. END

Short and Fun
Little Soup's Hayride is a quick, easy read for an established reader or a fun, friendly read for a struggling reader. The illlustrations numerous and are strongly related to the content of the page. The text has short sentences yet good vocabulary. Much of the language is decodable. The ending is surprisingly funny.

An quite simple Lang
I first know the world of modern origami because of Mr.Lang's book. His Step by Step origami is my first Lang book, and I am totally shocked. After all there are many wonderful book of Lang, each one climb unto a more higher stage. So I always doubt and wonder if Lang has his adolescent age in origami! And now this book is Lang's related simple work. According the publishing date (1992), This is STILL NOT an adolescent work, but it indeed contains easier models to fold. Some models are quite abstract, not as familiar Lang's style. It seems that Lang tried to make this book as easy as possible.

In fact this is a quite good origami textbook for true beginners and kids. It contains introduction of paper and notations then about 20 models, from 12 steps super easy and abstract grasshopper to complex(for some, intermediate) lion and gazelle.(Interesting enough, the gazelle use the base very like Montroll's dog's base). Although most models are simple, still there are some models both are abstract and beautiful, like ibex, gazelle and skate.

Unique book on the principles of clinical forensic medicine
The book is written as a practical guide to the main areas of concern for a forensic physician, with a reminder of the most salient points at the end of each section or chapter. In clinical medicine, we are always advised that the notes we take must be legible, accurate and comprehensive, in case they are required as evidence in legal proceedings at a later date. However, look at any set of patient's notes on the wards and they are complete with acronyms, abbreviations, and often illegible. The forensic clinician examines patients in police custody, and everything that s/he writes is subject to the same potential scrutiny as any other doctor, but in their case the likelihood of those notes coming before the courts is greatly increased. It is for this reason that the forensic physician receives extra training in the law relating to contemporaneity with respect to note taking, and the ability to refresh one's memory from one's notes in court at a later date. Clinical notes in the forensic setting must address the following questions, when (the record was made) how (the record was kept) what (the record contains) where (the record was stored) The book sets out methods of answering each of these questions in a practical manner, and goes on to address issues of consent and confidentiality. The concepts of consent and confidentiality are two of the major tenets of medical ethics, and are the subject of leaflets produced by the GMC. The forensic physician is placed in a dilemma - s/he has a responsibility to the patient in the same way that any doctor has, but also a responsibility to society and the system of justice to carry out forensic examinations. The findings of these examinations may not necessarily result in an outcome that is beneficial to the patient. Dr Robinson provides us with a succinct summary of the relevant issues surrounding this dilemma, and also steers the interested reader to additional sources of information. Most doctors will be required to give their evidence to a legal forum of some description - be it a magistrates court or coroner's court - and will be required to present their evidence in the form of a statement. The writing of statements is described in this book, and Dr Robinson gives a brief introduction to the law of evidence relating to statements and giving evidence. Having studied the law of evidence, it is clear that a text of this size can only possibly scrape the surface of the subject, but for the general reader I was impressed with the overview given. More detail on the giving of opinion evidence, and the duties of the expert witness would be beneficial, but again the aim of this text is to give a practical overview, and any criticism should be taken with that aim in mind. The chapters on Fitness to be Detained and Fitness to be Interviewed take the reader through common medical conditions encountered by the forensic physician, such as acute asthma, epilepsy and substance abuse. Guidance from a variety of sources is drawn together to provide the Forensic Physician with a handy guide to dealing with patients in the custodial setting with these conditions. As a medical student having been in casualty clerking patients with these conditions, it strikes me that the forensic physician is placed in an extremely difficult position - not only does s/he have to diagnose these conditions, but they also have to decide whether those patients can be managed in custody, or whether they need to be transferred to hospital for more sophisticated care. The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) Codes of Practice govern how a prisoner is treated in custody, and the forensic physician must consider how these impact on the prisoner presenting with symptoms that may affect their ability to be detained or interviewed etc. In order to ensure that there is no miscarriage of justice, the physician must determine whether a patient is fit to be interviewed, or whether the symptoms complained of are likely to interfere with their ability to answer questions correctly, or whether their symptoms amount to them being under 'duress', and consequently making all their answers inadmissible in evidence at a later date. A particularly difficult judgment call must surely be where an intoxicated individual also complains of a head injury - a common enough occurrence, but at what stage does the forensic physician decide when to transfer the patient to hospital? The remaining chapters continue in the same style, with an overview of the subject, with practical tips on what the forensic physician should cover in his/her examination routine. This slim volume was a pleasure to read. Although there were no photographs or illustrations in the core text, this did not detract in any way from the ease with which the book could be picked up and read. The author certainly succeeded in his aim to provide the reader with a practical introduction to the subject of clinical forensic medicine, and I would recommend it to any medical student interested in forensic medicine, as well as any other student of law or forensic science, as they will get an informed overview of the role of the forensic physician, which is lacking in most other forensic medicine texts.

Not very useful
Probably the strongest impression this book left me with is that it's great for ogling fitness models, if that's what you're looking for. Being a long-time reader of "Shape" magazine, I expected something much more geared toward women who are interested in their overall fitness and health. This book seemed more like a men's "Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue" with a little bit of fitness advice tossed in as an afterthought. There are far too many books of substance on this topic to bother with this one. Even a subscription to "Shape" magazine would be a better use of your money.

Serious about getting in shape
There are so few serious fitness books geared toward women! This book, however, addresses the women who are serious about getting in shape. After years of home fitness videos and nautilus machines, I wanted to get back into lifting weights for definition. This book is the only one so far that addresses different body shapes and gives individual workouts aimed at your fitness goals (including weight loss). Although many of the exercises involved machines, free weight options for the home gym were also given. I thought the women were beautiful and an inspiration (after seeing all those sticks in magazines day after day.) There was also a good introduction to basic free weights and why weight lifting is an excellent fitness routine for women. Highly recommended.

Shape Training
I have been following this book exactly as it says for about 4 weeks now. I was seeing and feeling results within the first two weeks. It is the best. The women in it are very real and aren;t at all manly looking. It shows that any body type can achieve what those women have.

I like that it gives examples of the certain women that were size 14's and up that got into shape training and are now in the best shape imaginable. I reccomend this book above any others.

It's Allright
It is an Ok book, but it is very boring and not very active. I didn't like it much, but it is pretty good. When kids look into books, they look for excitenent and lots of chapters, like in HARRY POTTER books. Once again, this book was OK but I've seen MUCH better! ROCK ON... PEACE OUT

It's Awesome
This book was very good. It was a tragic story about a young girl's life in Mississppi in the 1920's. She moved to Chicago and all kinds of things happened to her family. This is a great book and we liked it! You should read it!

A good glimpse at history.
This was a wonderful story for students in the fifth grade. We used this novel to link music class, art class, history, and reading. The story painted such a vivid picture for the students. The author, Dorothy Hoobler, beautifully took us on a tour of the 1920's.
