Where's the beef?
I was hoping that this Haynes manual would be similar in detail to the Haynes manual I had owned for my Datsun 240Z. The Datsun manual was full of engine, transmission, rear axle, and general specifications. The engine section of this Haynes manual has warpage limits, torque values and clearances, but is lacking in general specifications such as cylinder bore and stroke, displacement and compression ratio. Yes, the cylinder bore is given, but only in the engine overhaul section. All these specifications are normally found in the front of a service manual, but are mostly absent here. Transmission specifications and gear ratios are absent.

The prcedures given are adequate. I just wish this book had more general technical specifications for the car. I guess that's too much to ask from a manual that covers 15 model years.

I have used the book when working on my RA60, Its great!!
This book has helped me go step by step through minor problems that have gone wrong with my car. When repairing the car it is a valuable source of information that every Celica owner needs.

i use this book frequently my RA29 keeps on rolling
this book taught me how to be a mechanic. i've kept my car running for 10 years with it. the troubleshooting guide is invaluable....joe h.

Great for the small stuff
I found this book to be helpful in taking on small tasks such as doing your own brakes. In all, I would estimate this book saved me a few hundred dollars in repairs this year versus what I would have spent at the dealership or the local repair shop. (I was really upset when I found out how SIMPLE it is to replace disc brake pads) However, I would not use this manual for serious work, such as engine overhauls. In essence, this book is great for doing brakes, belts, spark plugs and minor troubleshooting. I would not depend on it for anything beyond such activities. Some of the chapters discuss engine overhauls and replacing struts. These are two pretty dangerous activities that the book sort of glazes over. They should have just left those things to the logic of "let somebody else seriously injure themselves doing this stuff".

It would have been nice for Haynes to include the Cadillac engine computer trouble codes, but you have to buy a seperate Haynes manual to get those.

Medical Choices, Medical Chances: How Patients, Families and Physicians Can Cope With Uncertainty

Medical truth and consequences often ignored
Why or why not submit to (techincal) battery in the name of better health? Because intervention always works? Because we patients deeply want to believe intervention will help? Because providers want us to believe it will help? Because it's faster? Because it's better?

This book lays out the pieces of medical choice-making in the context of the probabilities that underlie all desision making. It suggests that principled gambling is seminal to medical choices and makes suggestions, via numerous clinical vignettes, of how medical practice needs to change so that patients and practitioners can make better choices rather than those based on blind faith, short-term clinical efficiency, and shamanistic egos.

In short, this book deconstructs the mechanistic (know-it-all) paradigm of medical practice and replaces it with a probabilistic (don't know it all) paradigm that would, in most cases, be fairer and kinder to all.

Medicine would be a better place if the suggestions in this book were adopted.

Good Stuff!
Another great book by Robert Schuller that focuses on exactly what the title says. Gives some great ways to boost your confidence and lots of good advice on being a more positive person. Written in an easy to read style, it's by far one of the best books I've read on the subject.

Not recommended for educational purpose
This book is lacked of organization. Some of the concepts are so vague because of the POOR English tone.

A liitle out-date, but still a good book for OS concepts
This book is a little outdated today as it covers the older 2.0 kernels. If you are reading this book and following it up on a 2.4 kernel you will find many changes. The book does contain the source code of the reference kernel it is written on.

I suppose its time a new updated edition is published.

However the commentry on a older kernel does not reduce the value of this book. It is a good book to understand the OS concepts as applied to Linux kernel. This book can be a good companion to Silberschatz/Galvin's "Operating Systems Concept" in a college course.

Another value of this book is purely historical, in case someone desires to compare older and newer kernels with a high-level view.

Excellent book for programmers familiar with Unix
Since I had already taken a course in university on Unix Kernel Architecture, I found this book a good introduction to the Linux implementation. If you can pick up concepts quickly you may find the book adequate on its own, otherwise get another general Operating Systems textbook to help you with things like understanding virtual memory, interrupt service routines, drivers and networking concepts.

The author's goal seems to be to introduce you to a good portion of the kernel source code. Understanding the kernel source tree, the build process and the code itself is much easier once you have read the first few chapters of the book.

The book avoids teaching you or even using examples in assembly language. This may annoy you if you know assembly language, or thrill you if you don't. For example, the extremely time-critical interupt service routines, which are written in hand-optimized assembler, are explained with some C-like pseudo code.

Although the book is quite short, it is well written, and it explains the Linux kernel implementation in sufficient detail. Although it was intentional, some readers may wish that the book included more explanation of the concepts before the implementation is introduced.

A suggested companion text would be Andrew Tannenbaum's "Operating Systems: Design and Implementation".

Very theoratical and very scholastic impractial!
I wonder if anybody could really follow up what this book tried to deliver. Obviously, this was only a book written by two white-shoe scholars who never met any realistic danger in the streets but reading dangerous happenings everyday on the newspapers. If I really bought what this books theories(only theories), and really got into trouble with some attackers or assailants and trying to use the techniques(if they are techniques), I definitely would get killed right on the spot! This was a one-way-thought-so, or think-to-be personal safety textbook, but would only get people killed. I also almost got killed by the authors' zigzagging, circling-around-at-the-same-spot writing style, and felt dizzy all the time tring very hard not to lose focus. A terrible, horrible read! By the way, if I follow what the guy said in his foreword to blindly praise this book and really giving this book to everyone I know, I may lose their friendship permanently

Outstanding roadmap to increasing inner/outer safety
This book was absolutely fascinating and filled with exceptionally practical, great advice. I didn't read the book for the physical safety part, although I felt it does a great job there. I read it for the inner, emotional safety part. It provides practical advice in a clear, concise manner on how to maintain energy, alertness and effectively handle negative emotions and negative people. It's well worth the money.

Usually helpful, though not always
This manual has guided me through a number of repairs over the past few years, however it is certainly _not_ a replacement for a factory service manual. The underlying problem with this manual is that it tries to cover too many different vehicles, and while it attempts to address the nuances of each model, it invariably leaves quite a bit to be desired.

I have a 1991 Isuzu Rodeo 3.1L V6, a model which is not covered too well. The pictures in the manual don't usually help, since they are irrelevant to my vehicle. Especially with regard to the engine. My particular year's engine might as well not exist according to this manual. Just recently my water pump went out on me, and replacing it was entirely different from that described in this manual. The picture of the 3.1L engine in the Haynes Manual was not mine! (this is just one example of when i've been let down).

Though an experienced DIYer or mechanic will know how to fix most things in his car, this manual was little help aside of general auto repair information. Indeed, I learned a lot simply by "flying blind" into much of my auto repair, making the manual irrelevant.

The conclusion: Call Isuzu (Helm publications, I think) and order their service manual, which I haven't done yet, but I plan on doing. I'm pretty sure that will be vehicle specific and should be much more detailed/helpful for your particular vehicle. When you call, they might ask you for 2 different versions UCR or UCR/S. I *think* the standard ROdeo is the UCR version, UCR/S I believe is for the Rodeo Sport (amigo?)].

Fairly thorough, lacks diagrams...
Has good instructions, but doesn't cover all information

I liked the book better than the movie.
I thought "Priciples of Meat Science" was just okay. But I think "The Sopranos" is much, much better. Hopefully, this is not the best that the Lifetime Channel can do. I wish they'd show the reruns of "Homicide, Life on the Street" again, because I can't watch "Court TV" (it's against my parole.)

Quick payment, prompt delivery, great merchandise, A ++++!
The best chapter in the book by far is "Hitler was a Vegetarian," which is on the accomanying CD-ROM. In this historic recording, author Max Judge (brother of Beavis and Butthead creator) gives a gripping account of this little-known chapter in Military History! Highly recommended.

One glaring failure, otherwise quite tasty!
This volume has much to recommend itself and should keep you interested for a very long time. My only quibble is that it passes over any discussion of brisket. Fortunately, there's an excellent book just published which should fill this void: be sure to pick up "Snow Falling on Seders - The Complete Guide to the Cuisine of the Alaskan Jews."
