Basically Good Guide, But A Couple of Misses
This guide gives you pretty much what you're looking for in a guide... it lists the sites, gives recommendations on what you should see and miss, it also gives detailed information on how to reach where you're going by car, rail, bus, or plane. It's very similar in material and detail to the Lonely Planet Ireland guide... the difference, though, is that this guide has more information on activities such as walking, bicycling, birdwatching, swimming etc. where available. You should know two things, however that may sway your decision about this guide: #1) Absolutely no pictures.. if you need a guide with tons of pictures, get the Eyewitness Guide along with either this one or Lonely Planet to fill the gaps in the Eyewitness. #2) I was hoping for more recommendations for budget lodging. It usually only has a handful per town.. and some are not that reasonable. If this is because there are no cheap accomodations in most of the towns, that's fine. But the book IS called Ireland from $60 A Day, afterall. Maybe it should be called Ireland from $60 A Day, If You're Lucky and Go In the Off Season, But Really Be Prepared to Much Spend More Than That, Especially in Dublin. OK, maybe not. Hope this helps!

Best Guide for Traveling Ireland
I've tried different guides and I found I come back to the Frommer Guide. It contains more information that comprehensive and complete. Except maybe a few omissions. The [dollar amount] a day guide is handy for the thrifty traveler. It will help you find affordable accommodations and restaurants. My suggestion is if you're in Dublin be careful of some high prices. Sometimes it's best to check with the Tourist Board for the local budget fare. Most of the best bargains I found were by exploring the city. Most low prices are in the pubs and near the Temple Bar area. All the other places around Ireland are fairly reasonable. The guide contains lists of maps with two color city and regional maps, plus a large pullout road map. Also has tips for the best places and activities, and planning an affordable trip. All prices may vary though due to the High Season (Summer-higher prices) or the Low Season (Fall-Winter-lower prices). So the prices in the book is not always a reliable source. You may want to inquire. The book is sectioned by each county in the Irish Republic including Northern Ireland. Each attraction and establishment has description, address, contact and road information. There's a handy appendix to get an in-depth look at Ireland's history, folklore, music and food & drink. This is just about everything you need for a memorable and inexpensive trip.

extremely helpful!
i would recommend this book to anyone planning on traveling to ireland on a budget. the price comparisons from city to city are extremely helpful, as is the recommendations on areas to avoid if you're trying to avoid overly-touristy destinations. recommendations for low-cost travel agencies are accurate and helpful as well. my only gripe was the lack of photographs to give an idea of the places the book is describing, but the information more than makes up for the lack of images.

No Claim To Mercy: Elizabeth Bain and Robert Baltovich - A Suburban Mystery

THANKS TO THIS BOOK
Robert Baltovich is now out of jail and working at a somewhat prestigious job in downtown Toronto. I know this from a mutual childhood friend that Rob and I know. Robert is out of jail, long in advance of his seventeen year sentence, in large part, due to the uncovering of Metro Toronto police malfeasance and their outright obstruction of justice. Repentance must be forthcoming from the police, the judiciary. These tax-paid liars that are responsible for such skulduggery should be put away for more than the seventeen years they wished upon poor Robert. (The real murderer has yet to be charged with Bain's murder.) As well, restitution to Robert and his family must be made and that publicly. Read this book to know just what goes on in the name of 'justice'. It is certainly not pretty.

A Story of Courage in the Pursuit of Justice
This novel recounted the harrowing tale of young love which ended too soon. The author does a fantastic job in re-telling the tragic events that led to the arrest and conviction of Robert Baltovich. Fortunate enough for the readers, the author also allows for us to see how unfair the legal system is, and how cunning officers can be to find justice. I hope that Mr. Baltovich finds justice, and the Bain family finds the closure that they need.

An amazing recap of a tragic experience
As a family member of Robert Baltovich, I will say that No Claim to Mercy does an excellent job of recapping the devastating experience during the last almost ten years. It describes in amazingly accurate detail the occurences before the trial, during and after. What has gone on since is also in detail and is assurance for me just reading it that we, very soon, will come to the bottom of this, and an innocent man will have his freedom once again.

A Romantic Story
The romantic story of 2 poets who fell in love at mid-life, married, escaped to Italy, and lived happily for 15 years until Elizabeth's death. The author discusses the lives of the poets amongst their friends, acquaintances, other writers, & artists in Italy where living was less expensive and the climate more favorable. There are many cute stories about their son Pen and how the couple disagreed over various aspects of his unbringing. Also touched upon are the previous generations of both the Barretts and the Brownings and their history in Jamaica. Besides learning about the the Brownings, this book gives you a good feel of what life was like in the middle 19th century. Lots of B&W illustrations throughout the book.

Dares and Does draw you in
A wonderful biography of a marriage between two genius poets, Dared and Done drew me in with such force and speed that I was almost glad of being ill myself so as to have an excuse to stay in bed and finish it. Markus has managed to convey her own excitement at relating such an intriguing story and did what a good author should do - made me want to delve into these poets' lives and their poetry even more.

Some of the speculation I did not agree with such as EBB's father not wanting his children to marry because of possible African blood. The birth of Pen Browning should have eradicated that concern. We may never understand the strange, cruel elder Barrett and fortunately, Dared and Done doesn't hinge on the theory. I did want to know more about the conniving Sophia Eckley - her cause of death for example, since she played such a huge role in the Browning marriage. I was also curious about EBB's illness - oddly, we never do get a diagnosis - only her maintenance cure of morphine and ether.

Remarkably, EBB had the greater reputation as a poet during the Barrett-Browning marriage with Robert Browning for many years being considered the lesser poet. That can make for trouble in the most loving of marriages and re-witnessing the devotion these two gifted poets demonstrated repeatedly is both exceptional and inspiring.

A very nice bio into the life and poetry of immortal lovers
The Brownings hold a special place in my world, especially EBB. "Sonnets From The Portuguese" speaks with the eloquence, dignity and passion of the human ideal behind the flaws and veils of life and lovers (both RB and EBB's poetry are available on disc). Especially the last ten sonnets. EBB wrote not only about love and lovers, but about the human condition. She lived an insulated life yet was by nature a worldly and sophisticated soul. RB struggled with his inability to support his family, living off of EBB's inheritance annuity. Through this biography I was better able to appreciate his humaness and struggle, though I am still inclined toward EBB and her poetry. They were the sum of many contradictions, the big one being that they were so English (formal and proper) yet Bohemian in their liberal thinking. Both lovers and artists in the same household, in the same relationship, in the same struggle to survive and create (they do remind me of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's struggle and life together). While the book probably told the whole story, at least as much as a biographer can research and reveal, I still felt something lacking. I wanted the story to go on a little longer, a little deeper. I knew quite a bit about EBB before I began the book, I learned much more about her heritage and conflicts by reading this biography. My appreciation is much greater. It's a shame that we Moderns let so much of our heritage lay dormat (literaturewise) in the vaults of the "old days". To sip and savour the lives and poetry of the past is something we should cherish and celebrate. This book points in that direction. I strongly recommend this to all lovers of RB & EBB and poetry.

Clickety-click, it Rolls along
Sure to illicit giggles from little ones, Animal Train is about a trainful of children`s most favorite animals who manage to get out and onto the roofs of their cars. Cheerful illustrations with lots of sound words and the rythmical repetition that children so often enjoy carry the simple story along to its humorous solution. It won`t change the world, but it is quite enjoyable.

The book I've memorized
My only complaint about this book is that it needs to be republished as a board book. We have already read two copies of this book to shreds, and taped it together numerous times.

This is one of those sweet little books that I don't mind reading over and over. Even as the pages fall apart, I can still keep reading it, because I have it memorized. The last copy was well worth the special order required since it was out of print. The shipping cost more than the book. I am not a specialist in early childhood education (except that I have four young children) but this book just seems to have the elements that make for a good young children's story -- a train, a tunnel, dancing animals, a monkey band ("drummity drum went the drum"), mild suspense, an "all's well" ending -- not to mention the melodic phrasing and adorable cherubic illustrations.

Just writing about it makes me want to go read it again.

A Great Gift for a Coke Collector
I bought this as a gift for my best friend who collects all things Coca-Cola. However, while it was in my possession, I did get a chance to reveiew some of the recipies. They cover a wide range and use ingredients I'd forgotten about (remember Fanta?) or wished I had (powdered milk and vegetables that I didn't even know came in canned form)!!! But even if you never wanted to learn how to make Coke Glazed Ham or learn about any of the other things Coke can do: Check it out for the novelty--Coke is an evolving relic of Amer ican culture and history and the recipes were all created by consumers--not the company itself!!

A great book.
The book Muffins and Breads by Patricia A. Ward is a outstanding book that makes cooking breads and muffins easier than other books, and whats most important it makes cooking fun. I would have to say that it's one of the most intriging books that are involed with making you understand the way to make a certain bread wihtout confusing you. Patricia if I may this is a book that is really worth buying, you won't reget buying this book like you would with other books. Her book has many worth-while making so my advice is to go out and buy this book, if I can do it you defenitly do it. -Amber Erin 13

Elizabeth and Catherine: empresses of all the Russias

recommended highly - good solid data, light touch in text
A very interesting book that grabs the reader due to its combination of historical fact and flowing narrative. A lot easier and enjoyable to read than the common historical "tome" - with the content more memorable as a result! Great read.

Mothers of Russia
For some reason, English-speakers seem fixated on the regent Elizabeth I and pay scant attention to the infinitely more enjoyable Empress Elizabeth, daugher of Peter, enemy of Prussia; she of the 300 lovers, whose favorite was nicknamed "Emperor of the Night." Elizabeth's handling of her family affairs, especially her selection of the young German Princess Sophie of Anzalt as future Tsarina - and her DIRECT manipulation of her reproducitve activities - makes Henry VII's domestic life look placid. As we know, Sophie the German changed her name to Catherine and became Empress/Tsarina of Russia when her idiot husband was finally offed. Couglan's book is a wonderful retelling of this epic yarn, focusing exclusively on court politics. (This is NOT a military history of the Seven Years War or the Russo-Turkish wars; Potemkin's and Orlov's goings on are limited to their interaction with Catherine.) Coughlan is particularly strong at explaining the historical pretext for Russian expansion throughout Poland and Tartary.

A generous serving of gratitude
I am always on the lookout for any reminder of the beauty and wonder of living. In Life Prayers, I found a generous serving. Here is a book to carry you through the ordinary days of living and the not so ordinary times in life when we are caught off guard and lose our way. This eclectic mix of prayers, blessings and affirmations, will help you find your way back to a heart of gratitude. Its very earthy quality, carries on the tradition of reverence for all life which was started in the first book: "Earth Prayers". Here is a warm gift to give others who are just beginning their spiritual journey, as well as for those of us who have been walking the path for awhile now. If you enjoyed such books as Jon Kabat-Zinn's"Wherever You Go There You Are" or Andrew Harvey's "Light Upon Light" then you will love Life Prayers. Early on in "Life Prayers" there is this reminder: "Empower me to be a bold participant, rather than a timid saint in waiting, in the difficult ordinariness of now;" This book is not aimed at anyone spiritual or religious outlook. It is a reminder of the beauty to be found in our daily living. Many of these are sweet pieces I have never seen before, and some and like old friends. "May those whose lives are gripped in the palm of suffering open even now to the Wonder of Life. May they let go of the hurt and Meet the True Self beyond pain, the Uncarved Block that is our joyous Unity with Holiness...." There are prayers and affirmations, meditations and reminders, enough to read a new one every day of the year, but I think you will find that you can't read just one a day. I encourage you to give this gift to yourself.

A multi-traditional treasury celebrating our life journey
Those who have bought the editor's first volume, Earth Prayers will not be disappointed with this second collection of inspirational poems, prayers, chants, blessings, and invocations from around the world, from some of the most visionary thinkers, both past and present. This book has a truly impressive range of material.

This collection celebrates life and the life cycle. The selections are subdivided by categories: affirmations/invocations to life in general, honoring a kinship with all life, dark night of the soul, prayers for solidarity and justice, womensprayers, birth, coming of age, courtship, marriage, healing, mid-life, growing old, death, moments of grace and illumination, and praises for the earth. This is a great resource for those involved in running ecumenical services of any sort, any group that uses affirmations as part of it's groupwork, and for individuals who wish to make prayer a part of their daily lives. If you see the sacred in all things and are looking for something more than one religious traditions' teachings have to offer, this multicultural prayerbook is for you.

Brilliant Reference
I will admit that I have not read this book cover to cover, but I have used it rather as a reference tool, and so far, it has never let me down. It contains an even spread of the simple and the technical when descibing all aspects of the human skeletal system, leaving the reader to find the relevant information. It is well illustrated with simple, labelled line-drawings, rather than the highly detailed renderings of some other texts, making memorisation and reproduction easier for the student. Skeletal anatomy is well covered and well ordered, with references provided. The appendix, which contains "Muscle origins, insertions, innervations, blood supplies and principal actions" is, I believe, one of the books strongest aspects, and is well set out; easy for memorisation.
Students will benefit from this book.

Great book for spinal anatomy and gross anatomy class
I am a chiropractic student and used this book for my spinal anatomy and gross anatomy classes. It made the information easier to understand. My study group and I also used the following which is also on amazon: Spinal Anatomy Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
ISBN: 0971999600
The study guide had the type of questions that were asked on my spinal anatomy and gross anatomy tests. We all passed the class. These two books are must buys.

Enjoyable well written Renaissance mystery
The setting is the Northern border of England. Our hero is Robert Carey, the son of Lord Hundson, Queen Elizabeth's Lord Chamberlain and her first cousin through their mothers', Mary and Ann Boleyn. Hundson is also, however, in this novel, historically he may not have been, the bastard son of Henry VIII. So Robert Carey, new deputy warden, more like sheriff really, of one the two main border keeps, is the grandson of the late great Tudor king himself. Unfortunately, Carey's noble bloodlines and his courtier experience is not going to matter a jot to the rough hewn Scottish and English clans around the border. Their main interests are feuding, cattle and horse "reiving," an old word for rustling, and occasionally killing each other. Carey's brother-in-law, Lord Scrope has just become Warden of the March after the death of his father. Unfortunately for everyone Lord Scrope is not exactly brilliant, even if his wife, Carey's sister, Lady Philadelphia, is plenty smart. Meanwhile, the dead body of Sweetmilk Graham, favorite son of one of the leading clan chiefs, Jock of Peartree, has just been discovered on an old battlefield. Jock thinks he knows who did it and wants to pursue a vendetta against Carey's new local man, Seargent Dodd, while Carey isn't so sure, and would like to introduce the concept of Justice to the lawless frontier. Not that anyone on the lawless frontier cares. Carey is willing to go to great lengths and place himself in the middle of a mysterious anti-royal plot to prove his mettle, solve the mystery of Sweetmilk's murder, bring the murderer to Justice, and incidentally find out why all the horses south of the border have suddenly disappeared. But his love, Lady Elizabeth Widdrington, is the real reason he's turned up in these parts. And she's very concerned about his predilection for adventure, a little bit less concerned about her husband. It's an entertaining story, with fun yet believable characters, and even the hero makes human sometimes stupid and serious mistakes. The dialect reads beautifully, though I was occasionally confused as to where exactly the different "Marches" or border forts were.

Famine of Horses
Here is a very enjoyable book, set on the 16th-century Scottish border and written in a stark, clear style. Readers of Barbara Hambly's work may well appreciate this.

Chisholm's differences from the standard run of historical mystery authors start with her (?) writing style, which is spare, and reminds me of that of Cecelia Holland. It is also not devoid of humor, and the dialogue crackles along.

The setting is wonderful: very different from the norm, but extremely lawless and full of potential pitfalls for the characters. As a nonspecialist in the Renaissance, I didn't find any particular historical errors, though some readers may be confused by the references to the two separate courts, the Scottish one of which was headed by the man who would soon become James I of England. The women are perhaps a little independent for the time period, but it seems plausible enough given the setting.

Characters here stand out. I particularly liked the lugubrious Sergeant Dodd and his fiery wife, but Robert Carey, perhaps the only man on the Border with a concept of impartial justice, is also appealing. Assorted hard cases and Border ruffians fill out an entertaining cast. Chisholm's names for characters are wonderful.

The plot is an exciting one, involving murder, horse theft, kingnapping schemes, and assorted brawls. Though the larger themes have a certain implausibility about them, and some of the elements could be better described, there's little real cause for complaint.

What a romp of a book this is!
This is entertainment at its best. This book features authentic history and period detail cloaked in a rollicking story about wonderful characters. It is funny, touching and full of adventure. You'll love the hero (based on a real person), and the rest of the cast of characters are equally entertaining.

The writing throughout is excellent, with sparkling dialogue and just enough period descritpion that you'll swear you are actually there in Carlisle in 1592.

It is billed as a mystery, which is a little of a misnomer. There is a dead body and a search for the killer, but that is just one element among many. This book is hard to characterize; maybe "period adventure" fits it best. But even at its most exciting, it remains light-hearted.

Highly recommended.

Ghostly guardians of our Shores
This is a lightweight, amiable guide of the sort you might pick up in a tourist trap on your way to Martha's Vineyard or Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The lighthouses described in the book are located on the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts, and on the Great Lakes, with one on the Gulf of Mexico thrown in to make an 'even' thirteen stories.

The lighthouses and their keepers are meticulously described with some not-so-scary ghosts added as an extra tourist attraction. There are also black-and-white photographs of each lighthouse and/or the keepers' residence, along with directions on how to find them.

Some of the lighthouses or keepers' dwellings are bed-and-breakfasts, so you can check out the phantoms during an overnight stay if you so desire. All of the stories are supposedly authentic, so take a flashlight with you in case the big beacon fails---or turns on when it shouldn't (see the story of the Old Presque Isle Light Station on Lake Huron.)

The saddest story involves the history of the St. Augustine Lighthouse in Florida, where there are a multiplicity of spirits to choose from, including one who smokes cigars. The smallest phantom might be the daughter of a nineteenth-century lighthouse keeper: she was killed along with two of her friends, when a tram used to haul supplies from the dock to a construction site, "suddenly broke loose, hurtled down the rails, and dumped the three girls into the water. All of them drowned."

A must for lighthouse buffs, and lovers of ghost stories.
Anyone who has a romance with lighthouses like I do, and likes great stories like I do, will love this book. I certainly do. 'Excellent writing and photography too.

Intriguing and fascinating
Once you start reading "Lighthouse Ghosts", you will not want to put it down! Anyone interested in lighthouses and their history will thoroughly enjoy reading this book. The stories of the lighthouse keepers and their families are fascinating. I want to go visit every one of them! The stories are very easy to read and understand, and some of them give you shivers up your spine!

I really enjoyed reading this work, and I hope another book on some more haunted lighthouses is printed soon!
