A legend redeemed and a new perspective
This is an edit of my original review. I was chastised in a kindly manner by the author for some of my original statements, and as I reread my review I belive with good reason. Though I am entitled to my opinion I don't have the right to presume that which I do not know for a fact. Based on Mr. Carters comments I will remove the those which he has refuted or corrected. Mr. Carter, my humble apologies. The boys of my generation have a firm tribal memory of Cody. His career as a pony express rider, the "first scalp for Custer", the Wild West show performance before Queen Victoria is the kind of knowledge one just seems to "know". Perhaps the generations that have followed my own have forgotten and this book will redeem his reputation as well as rescue him from the haze of the 19th Century. It is a "good read" and is full of facts and anecdotes. Mr. Carter often presents the evidence and leaves it up to the reader to decide the verity of the story. This is a great technique and it leaves the reader with the feeling he has uncovered the truth. It might be called the multiple choice method of biography. However, it is the use of this technique that detracts from a well researched study. That said and in spite of some barbs on my part I do think this is among the finest and possibly best researched treatment of the man.

A sure besteller!
Robert Carter has brought Buffalo Bill back from near oblivion, and presses his case that Cody was a major American figure in graceful and masterfully written prose.

A biography that reads like a page-turning novel.
Here is that rare kind of book that's equally rewarding to two kinds of readers -- people looking for a ripping good yarn, and serious students of the Old West. It's beautifully written in clear plain language that captures the epic sweep of the period, its tragedies, and even its bawdily comic moments. The text is tastefully sprinkled with excellent photos and illustrations. Thorough source notes are also included -- at the end, where they don't get in the way of your reading, along with a bibliography and useful index.

"Buffalo Bill Cody, the Man Behind the Legend" is the first complete biography of this marvelous old cuss in more than 30 years, and far and away the most accurate one ever written. It traces the life and many careers of Buffalo Bill from ox-driver, prospector, and Pony Express rider barely out of his childhood to adult adventures as Army scout, Medal of Honor winner, and finally as the boozy myth-making old showman whose geniality could accommodate both Sitting Bull and Annie Oakley under the same tent.

Buffalo Bill Cody knew virtually everyone worth knowing in the Old West, and most of those people make guest appearances in this book -- Wild Bill Hickock, Bat Masterson, George Armstrong Custer, and many others.

Robert A. Carter manages to tell the vivid story of his subject while also treating the reader to insights into the sights, sounds, smells, and ethos of the period in general, and he does it in a writing style remarkable for its wit and charm. I intend to keep this book in my personal library, both as a reference and to read again.

Not enough how-to-do-it examples
I was extremely excited about this book when I first started reading it. Being a new pastor of a small church, I was hoping that it would give me the nuts and bolts of how to put together a discipleship ministry. Unfortunately, as I got closer to the end of the book it was obvious that I wasn't going to get that here.

The book overall seems to be written with the intent to give pastors who are not creating disciples the conviction that they should be. Much descussion is given to "WHY" you should, not "HOW" you can. There is an overview of a structure that can be used but it sure would have been nice to have more detail on how to put it all together.

Imperative for Serious leaders
Having been personally discipled in a small group setting, I believe this is what the modern church has always missed. The shepherd must come to realize the tremendous gap between Sunday worship and daily practical Christian living is filled by a determined, systematic, measurable, plan of Biblical discipleship. Too many churches are little more than "pools of ignorance", lacking the ability to think critically and practice discernment, things so dearly needed today. In today's "instant gratification" mentality, this 2-3 year plan is not popular, but bears fruit lasting into eternity.

Too Busy To Make Disciples?
There is no shortage of work to be done by the average pastor in the average church. Yet, Christ calls us to select the excellent priority of making disciples who will reproduce themselves in others. The authors rightly insist that the church must refocus its efforts on people not programs. Pastors cannot leave this task to others, but must lead the church family through the transition. This is a must read for every pastor who is bothered by the lack of significant discipleship taking place in the church.

A Kind and Gentle Leader
The first book I read by Mr. Holton was a similar book, just about U. S. Grant. I liked that one a lot (I have a review here also), so much so that I went ahead and got this one too. I figured that I'd give both sides a fair chance...

Well, I was not disappointed in the least. The style is the same as the Grant volume, and the format is the same. None the less, it reads very well and is very informative, although not as entertaining as I would have liked, thus the 4 stars. One thing for sure, you'll get to know Lee very well reading this book. And there are many lessons to be had from the reading, possibly one on every page, if you feel so inclined.

As with the Grant volume, Mr. Holton takes one area of leadership and reports how Lee acted in regards to that item (Patriot Voice, Duty are 2 examples). Each discussion is contained on one page! A very good use of words by the writer makes this work. Then it's on to the next, then the next, the next, and so on. One can read one page and think about it, or take a couple of hours and polish off the whole book!! I perferred the slower method.

However you choose to read this bbok, make sure that you do read it, and the Grant volume also. You'll get a good look at 2 very important military minds of our short history. You'll also learn some important lessons on how to deal with people and situations, in both business and personal life. Well done Mr. Holton. Thank you!

strong leadership ideas
i bought this book for a $... at another retailer one day not thinking too much about it. read it and thought it was one of the better books i picked up in a while. quality ideas to follow and good reasons to self-reflect on your own management styles

A Life of Excellance!
"Leadership Lessons of Robert E. Lee" is a well written, thought provoking book. Lee was a man of outstanding character and moral values. Any manager can learn a tremendous amout from reading and placing the principles contained in this wonderful book into his daily life. An excellant book that I most highly recommend to any one who manages or leads people

Strong debut
I'm a sucker for any anthology that ends with Richard Petty accepting the National Book Award. . . This one also has a lot of heart. The first of what promises to be an annual collection of stories promoting "a rebirth of beauty and life-affirming values," the Silver Rose Anthology offers a strong mix of voices and attitudes. Not every story here will appeal to every reader (the opening story, for instance, does little for me), but the collection overall is outstanding. Personal favorites (in addition to George Singleton's outrageous "Richard Petty Accepts the National Book Award") include Robert Olen Butler's seamless "Rafferty and Josephine," Julie Orringer's touching "Note to Sixth-Grade Self" Patry Francis'"Limbe," and Patricia Hackbarth's provocative "A Brief Geological Guide to Canyon County."
Move over Bill Henderson, Katrina Keneson, and Larry Dark. Watson's in the house!

Great Stories, Great Book!
When Kevin Watson gathered the stories for this anthology, he was doing us a public service. This is a hard world: hearts break, and lives are shattered. Stories that don't deal with those realities aren't true to life. But there's so much more to life--and should be to art. These stories are "life-affirming" in the best kind of way: They don't stay sunk in gloom, but they don't stoop to easy answers. Each one shows us a new facet of getting on with life, making things work, following the path. The individual stories are excellent--I especially like the story by Pulitzer Prize-winner Robert Olen Butler, although it's one of several strong stories--and in their cumulative effect, the collection becomes (and I mean this in the best kind of way) inspirational.

Silver Rose Anthology
i only gave this book 5 stars because i could not give it more. i went to a reading of one of the writers and soon went on to read the rest. it has a good mix of voices, but by far the best writer is Heidi Shayla and her story "The Coffin Builder's Romance", it is a beautiful story of quilts, boxes, and of course, coffins. it is my all time favorite anthology, and i would definetly recomend it.

Intermediate Biztalk without Proofreading
The substance of this book is very good, if too wordy. There is no doubt that the authors have a firm grasp of their subject; now they just need to be concise in discussing it. As stated in the book, the book is designed for readers who have a basic familiarity with BizTalk -- however note that readers are expected to be familiar with MS operating systems and some scripting and programming languages. Not having this knowledge will make this book difficult to follow, especially in the examples.

Since the advent of the spell checker, no one proofreads any more. The book is rampant with errors. For example, the text will state that five parameters are required, then list six. In one case the publishing tool boldly inserts "ERROR! Reference source not found" when the text references a figure... Still, I'll give it high recommendations for content.

Excellent BizTalk book
As a developer, I bought BizTalk Unleashed to evaluate the capabilities of BizTalk Server 2002. Specifically, I looked at how it can be used in EDI transaction processing and how to use .NET (VB.NET/C#) and I was impressed because the book has excellent examples, from general overview to step-by-step guide, on how to use every tools and technologies that BizTalk has to offer. Most importantly, the examples on how to use .NET (VB.Net/C#/) in developing COM+/COM/Web Sevices is very valuable. Not only they are valuable, all the examples I tried just worked which in itself saved me from frustrations!

I must say that with this book, I clearly discovered many great capabilities of BizTalk and I am confident that I can accomplish anything that involves BizTalk using BizTalk Unleashed!

By the way, the review just reflects my satisfaction of the book.

Nice book about Boeing
I especially like airliners, and I am not so much into military planes. Therefore the large sections on the B17, B29, B47 etc downgraded my rate to a 4 star. But I must admit, the (military GA-2) section was very funny. My copy is an old one from 1983. So the chapter 'A new era' shows the prototypes of the 757 and 767 and a model of a 7-7 (certainly not a 777). Check out what the new era is now. All aircraft are covered including the lesser known beautiful 307 Stratoliner and the classic model 247. Lots of colorfull pictures, and a informative text. A real nice to have book if you are interested in that other company from Seattle

EXELENT
Exelent book with wonderful pictures and tons info on Boeing. It talks about Boeing from the begining of the company, and up to the recent Boeing 777 and merger with McDonnel Douglas in 1996. This book is very informative on Boeing's history and I really like it.

The business philosophy of Gates as a study in management
Exact figures would no doubt be elusive, but certainly one of the most recognized names is that of Bill Gates. Despite some of the negative circumstances of his success, it is gratifying to realize that he has star power to rival that of any other celebrity. Business and intellectual leaders contribute so much to the world, it is high time that they are treated as the stars they are.
This book is an examination of the Gates/Microsoft phenomenon from the perspective of business strategies. It is a combination of a brief historical record of the development of Microsoft and the reasons for that success. These reasons are then examined as case studies for how to succeed in the area of business management. The examples include the successes as well as the failures of Microsoft over the years. The dramatic changes that took place when Microsoft finally discovered the Internet will no doubt become the model for how a large company can change direction quickly and successfully. For all his faults, Bill Gates has shown a knack, albeit sometimes ruthless, for being one of the best business people of all time. His actions should be studied, both for emulation and avoidance.
Since most of the historical record was known to me, my interest was primarily in how the events were used to describe the introductory principles of management. In that area, the book is well-designed. The case studies are easy to follow and certainly relevant to the modern business climate. The level of the presentation is such that it can be understood by anyone interested in basic management.
It will be years before the historical record concerning Bill Gates is finalized. Until then, it should be studied as a modern success story to be examined for the lessons that can be learned. This book presents those tales in a manner that is neutral concerning the controversial aspects of the richest man in the world who still flies economy as an example to his employees.

A Computer in Every Home
Bill Gates originally wanted to create "a tool for the Information Age that could magnify your brainpower instead of just your muscle power." He saw digital tools as the way to enhance the unique powers we all possess. For academics and techies it is pure heaven to share information online. Bill Gates predicted that the Internet would help to bring people together instead of causing "society to fly apart."

Either you love Bill Gates or you loathe him. I'm in the "love" category for many reasons. For one, I just love the software and it makes my life a dream. While he may be controversial, he seems to have a great heart for philanthropy and is well known for The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with a focus on scholarships, computers in schools and world health. So while many envy his wealth, you have to look at his generosity and how he is helping to change the lives of children all over the world.

"It's possible to save millions of children's lives just by applying the technology that's here today." ~Bill Gates

In this book, Robert Heller analyzes the key skills behind the genius of Bill Gates and presents the experience of one of the worlds top business gurus in an accessible format.

Discover how Gates:

Siezes Opportunities
Forges Key Collaborations
Hires the Best Brains - Read about what it takes to be considered "super smart!"
Focuses on His Goals - "A PC on every desk and in every home, using Microsoft Software"
Outwits the Opposition

Dominates the Market
Makes Solid Decisions
Recognizes His Mistakes - How Gates go the Internet wrong and then got it right.
Stays Ahead of The Game - Invading the Internet
Excels as a "Practical Intellectual"

This book also shows his Environmentally-Friendly-Computer-Controlled Lake Washington futuristic home that was so difficult to see from the freeway. ;>

Introducing very young kids to Halloween's spooky sounds
"Old Devil Wind" will get very young children in the mood for Halloween night by telling them what happened "One dark and stormy night" when a Ghost began to wail. One by one other things in the house, from the stool and the broom to the door and the floor, as well as the owl and the witch outside, begin to add their own spooky sounds to the dark and stormy night. You can think of this story by Bill Martin, Jr. (author of "Brown, Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" and "Happy Hippopotami") as sort of a creepy Halloween version of "Old MacDonald." Barry Root ("Pumpkins") provides the suitably eerie illustrations chronicling the growling cacophony of eerie sounds that builds to the arrival of the Old Devil Wind at the climax. "Old Devil Wind" should work well for youngsters who can still count the number of times they have gone trick or treated on the fingers of one hand (without using the thumb).

Storytime
Wonderful book for story time. Easy to involve children in the excitement of the book. Lots of opportunities to involve sounds while reading at a Halloween party.

The Raven Steals the Light
I grew up in the pacific north-west and experienced many of these stories as a child. This was a wonderful book to bring back most of those memories. It is well written. Simple yet engaging. Once I started I couldn't put it down. I've since used it as a teaching resourse in social studies and will be ordering other copies for fellow teachers I've shown it to and were equally impressed. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in native legends or mythology.

A Haida legend primer
I brought this book on a trip to Vancouver and Victoria and read it in the evenings after returning to my hotels. As a European American, I found it indispensable to understanding much of the art I saw on vacation (especially Totem Poles). This book relates many of the best known Haida stories, including those of the noble, tragic Bear; the intrepid, versatile human fisherman-hunter Nanasigmit and above all the amoral but always fascinating Raven. Almost all the stories are simple, yet strike a deep chord. Add this to "Looking at Totem Poles" and "Kwakuitl Legends", both also reasonably priced, and you'll be well on your way to understanding the basics of First Nations culture.
