The finest book of its kind
As an English instructor, I've found this book to be the most help for students whose previous experience in writing focused on larger more content based matters such as thesis statements, topic and support sentences, etc. , rather than on the sentence-level matters of styles. Many of my college students have an adequate knowledge of how to write an argument, but no idea of how to vary their sentences and link one sentence to the next. This book is a great help and the only one I've found that deals with matters like specificity, conciseness, precision, subordination, coordination, tone, and voice in the detail such matters demand. I highly recommend it.

Robert E Howard (Starmont Readers Guide Ser. No. 35)
Published in Hardcover by Borgo Pr (1987)
Author: Marc Cerasini
Amazon base price: $17.95
Average review score:

Outstanding! Thoroughly researched and insightful.
If you've never read any of Robert E. Howard's fiction because of those lame-@$$ Conan movies then you are missing out on a real treat. Mr. Cerasini and his colleague Charles Hoffman are considered the country's premeir REH scholars and that rep was earned SOLELY by this slim volume. In addition to the larger than life warrior from Cimmeria for whom REH is best remembered, Messrs. C. and H. cover Kull, Solomon Kane, Red Sonja, and lesser stars, plus his contributions to contemporary author H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos stories. The authors make their case that in addition to almost single-handedly creating hard-boiled American fantasy, they also feel that had he not taken his own life he'd be more famous for the natural writing he'd started at the end of his career, a sort of James Dickey/John McPhee type. (My choice of authors, not theirs!). If you liked "The Whole Wide World", the movie based on REH's life, you can't miss out on this cult-status volume of LitCrit that places REH squarely where he deserves, in the pantheon of Classic American Authors. Enjoy!

Three Great Novels of World War II the Pacific: Tales of the South Pacific, Mister Roberts, Cry, Battle

Three great stories, in one!

How can you beat it? Three of the great classics of World War II in one volume!

Tales of the South Pacific, by James Michener, was a Pulitzer prize winning novel by one of the greatest authors of the twentieth century. Renowned for his detailed research, and for his storytelling ability, Michener has been described with every superlative in the book. This story may be his finest, and served as the basis for the Broadway musical and the movie, "South Pacific." The setting is a tropical paradise; windswept coral isles and the nurses, soldiers and sailors caught up by the war, and the inevitable romances that resulted.

Mr. Roberts, by Thomas Heggen, is the story of a much-loved navy lieutenant juxtaposed against the rigid, incompetent captain of a navy cargo vessel, the "Reluctant," whose duties take her from boredom to tedium and back again with little relief for the crew. The story is anything but boring, however, and the characters are unforgettable. In the movie version, Henry Fonda portrayed the herois Mr. Roberts movingly. The story mixes poignancy with satire, and is both hugely funny and profoundly tragic.

Battle Cry, by Leon Uris (another giant of literature), depicts life in the United States Marine Corps as it was during the great Pacific War. The story takes you from boot training to the foxholes with the fighting Marine Corps, who probably suffered more than any other branch of service in the Pacific in the early to middle 'forties. Faith, hope, and desire are all epitomized in this story, often described as the greatest novel ever written about the Marines.

Anyone interested in those days of Pacific conflict should have this book, unless they already have these three great stories in another form.

A TRIBUTE TO WOMEN AND TO HUMANKIND
Seventy-five of the most noted women of the recent past are remembered by a roster of outstanding photographers in this stunning volume. Each photo, which captures the subject at the height of her achievements, is accompanied by a biography detailing contributions made and public response.

All of the photos capture the essence of the woman, as Cokie Roberts remarks in the Preface: "Look into the eyes of the subjects of these photographs and you see the triumphs, failures, hopes, and disappointments of some of the truly talented women of our time."

The album is a diverse collection of unique women, from Helen Keller to Dorothy Parker to Gertrude Stein to Gypsy Rose Lee to Shirley Temple to Ella Fitzgerald.

We learn that upon Grandma Moses's first visit to New York City she "told reporters, 'It's nice to be here, but the city doesn't appeal to me.' 'As picture material?' someone asked. 'As any material,' she answered."

And, we discover that Joan Baez remembers singing the civil rights movement's anthem "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial, by saying, "...one of the medals which hangs over my heart I awarded to myself for having been asked to sing that day."

The revelatory photos and essays found in "Women Of Our Time" are a tribute to women, to our age, and to humankind.

Clearest explanation of our health care system's mess.
Roberts explains how the health care system has worked, why it is the mess it is, and what the impact of various "fixes" might be. This book serves very well the average citizen's need to understand the health care system. You do not have to be a clinician or a politician or an economist to read this book! He writes extremely lucidly, without resorting to jargon, and the book is a treat to read. It has an 'ah-ha' on every page. Even though we are years past Clinton's failed health care reform effort, the explanations and projections remain completely relevant. It is a crying shame that this book is out of print, as it would be in great demand if people could get their hands on it!
