A lifesaver - quick, elegant recipes for last minute company
It may never rate as a "classic" cookbook, but over the last 5 years this slim tome has pulled me out of more than one last minute menu scrapes. Recipes like Arrosto di Maile all'Alloro (Pork with Bay Leaves) and Dried Apricots baked with Vanilla set the tone - non-labor intesive recipes with a short list of ingredients -- the emphasis being on the quality of meat, produce & spices rather than fancy techniques or sauces. Barbara Kafka's classic 500 degree roasted chicken and much maligned (but delicious) microwave risotto are by themselves worth the cost of this book!

Great Food Without Fuss
I have over 120 cookbooks and this is the best!!!!! This is the one cookbook I keep coming back to. I have honestly tried almost every recipe in the book, and so far everything has been very, very good and very, very easy to make. My only sadness about this book is that it is now out of print and I have to buy a used copy to replace my first one which is falling apart at the seams.

If Stranded with Only 2 Cookbooks, This Would Be One!
Without a doubt, this book delivers. Easy, tasty food from the very best chefs. Try the Roasted Peppers, Potatoes and Onions or any of the Pork recipes.

A real favorite. In fact, I find myself going back to this over and over again, and am never disappointed.

Nice variety
I was impressed by the variety in these stories. Some of them are only meant to be light entertainment, but others like "Jack Be Quick" and "The Favor" really get to you. I especially liked "Scat" -- which uses the title word in four different meanings.

A good collection
These are superior stories, and they're all different. She can make you laugh in one story and give you chills in the next. The title novella is a fantastic piece of writing.

Low on the go
I saw Terri on Martha Stewart and the Vegi Enchilada she did was fast, easy and looked good. After buying the book, I tried that recipe, absolutely loved the flavor and put it together in 10 minutes! Hard to believe it was low-fat. My husband who is a meat and potatoes man actually tried the Vegi Enchilada and couldnt put his fork down. Knowing it is healthy AND tastes good is a bonus. I rarely, if ever, cook a meal but with these quick and painless recipe's I've gotten to be quite handy in the kitchen.

Lowfat on the Go
Terri has five active children and sujected them to trying each receipe before allowing a recipe to be in her book. She wrote the book while teaching nutrition classes and raising a family. Her recipes are easy to prepare and designed for a busy family -- hence the title assiciated with a busy lifestyle. Our family and friends use her book regularly and find the recipes tasty and nourishing. We recommend them to anyone -- young or old.

Making Quick Breads (Storey/Garden Way Publishing Bulletin ; A-135)
Published in Paperback by Storey Books (1992)
Authors: Barbara Karoff, Connie Parkinson, and Kim Foster
Amazon base price: $3.95
Used price: $2.11

Beyond banana bread
If you have ever made banana bread, you can bake the recipes in this book. For the novice, Karoff gives advice for getting it right. She also offers the more adventurous a basic recipe with guidelines for successful experimentation. Most of these recipes also make excellent muffins (and other shapes) with cooking time adjustments.

Quick breads rise using baking powder or soda (meaning no kneading and rising) and they offer some of the easiest baking out there. They need not be relegated to breakfast or dessert, either. There is a section on savory quick breads that would be appropriate alongside soups or entrees. Take a quick bread to your next gathering and you may well receive more credit than is due!

If you've never had a Storey cooking bulletin, you will find them brief, but focused and well-done.

A Potful of Recipes: A Healthy Exchanges Cookbook

Is this healthy?
I agree with some of the other reviewers. Joanna Lund's books do not contain healthy recipes, they are full of processed foods. The fat content may be low, but what about the sodium, sugar, and carbohydrate count. There are many other excellent crockpot cookbooks out there, that use real food.

Extremely disappointing
I purchased this book expecting to find healthy recipes for crockpot cooking. If your definition of "healthy" consists of using processed foods, such as canned soups and processed cheese, than this book is for you. Personally, I prefer recipes that consist of real, whole foods that are nutritious and simple to prepare. I ended up donating this book to my local library. Maybe someone else will find a use for it. Yuck!

Eating healthy does not need to mean rice cakes forever!
After my husband had a heart attack four months ago, it became my job to redirect our family eating habits. Because I knew I had to have good tasting food for this to succeed, I began the hunt for new recipes. During the "education" phase of my husband's cardiac rehab program, we were introduced to the cookbooks of Joanna Lund. I noticed the ingredients were ones I already had in my kitchen. The finished products were facsimilies of things we already liked. I bought the book - tried a few things and when I saw my husband look for seconds - I KNEW this was one of the best buys I had made in four months! Each menu is broken down by calories, fat grams, proteins etc as well as diabetic substitutes. Strongly recommend.

Not a Book for the Masses
Any one who has worked in a child custody setting or attended the average divorce court will know that STILL FRIENDS Is not a book that addresses the trenchant problems most people face during a divorce. Worse still, one suspects that this book suger-coats some basic facts about the hard work of dismantling a domestic cosmology no matter how educated or therapized the people involved happen to be.. The fact that the book is very small unwittingly validates the impression that the research was slim and the author created a premise and found a few people to support it with biased interviews. It would be great if this author had taken a look at even a handful of literature about family systems therapy: Among other things, she extolls the virtues of infinitely extended families made of spouses and ex-spouses and lovers of ex-spouses and ex-lovers of ex-spouses. This has to be a nightmare for the kids, and one wonders whether any thought has been given to their real feelings.

Not much of a book
A collection of peoples' success stories in maintaining some sort of amicable relationship post-divorce. While many of the stories are inspiring, the book is written in a hodge-podge fashion arranged around subject matter but sharing quotes from the same people over and over. I would have preferred chapter by chapter couple studies that went in depth into the various stages each couple went through as they dealt with their scenarios.

Large print, small format, wide margins, large spacing try to mask that this book simply isn't very long. As another reviewer said, an "easy read"; that's a nice way of putting it.

Saving lives
Barbara Quick has managed to write an anecdotal, eminently useful book for those who are divorced or will be. She focuses on the truths of post-divorce relationships in all their complexity, while she leads the reader through them, to a happy (and realistic) outcome. As a pastor, I plan to give a copy to any couple who come to me for advice about their divorce. The book will save lives!

Slightly Shady
Published in Audio Cassette by Recorded Books (2001)
Authors: Amanda Quick and Barbara Rosenblat
Amazon base price: $68.00
Average review score:

Slightly Off Course
Amanda Quick is an outstanding author, who keeps me riveted and turning the pages as fast as I can read. So, it was slightly disappointing to discover a book by her that was interesting, but that lacked the elements that make her usually a truly great writer--humor, wit, well-drawn characters and fast paced storylines. The characters here are okay, but the chemistry between them neither ignites nor develops believably. Unlike so many of her books which tell tales of the Ton, the main characters are more members of the Intellgentsia, and lack the social connections, entree and financial resources to be part of the Ton. Instead of owning fashionable things, they struggle to earn what they can off the wealthy Ton. The secondary set of characters in this novel, the niece and the brother-in-law of the main characters are well-drawn and likable. This is a book worth reading, but only after having finished all her others, which are so much better.

A fun frolick
As an avid reader of romance novels, I'm constantly searching for for something a little different, something that doesn't rely entirely on the old, tired cliches (he's gorgeous and consumed with lust, she's perfect and hiding something) and simplistic resolutions (they have a misunderstanding and narrowly miss getting back together before the novel's closing pages). Of course, it always helps when there's an interesting story surrounding the romance, just to keep intelligent readers interested.

I've already become enamoured with JD Robb's "In Death" series, and wondered if there were any other on-going tales like those, where the hero and heroine not only love each other, but work together and prove through action and not simple rhetoric that they love, trust and respect one another.

It seems that Slightly Shady may be what I was looking for. Though not as darkly dramatic as Robb's novels, Quick's new series seems to promise some light-hearted tales full of mystery, murder, passion and witty reparte.

I'm looking forward to the next installment, hoping for some further character development and the growth of their relationship. It should be an interesting ride...

A great romance and a great mystery !
While this style is not unknown to Ms. Quick's readers, I found this bok to be a delightful read. I enjoyed all the twists and turns, and couldn't wait to get to the end...I knew there was another book in the series !

All in all, this is an enjoyable book. It's light reading at it's best...so pack a picnic and take this paperback to the beach. I am sure you won't be disappointed.

Victorian Crocheted Christmas Ornaments: 33 Quick-And-Easy Projects (Dover Needlework)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (1993)
Author: Barbara Christopher
Amazon base price: $3.50
Used price: $24.89
Average review score:

a waste of your money
The title is more grand than the projects. If you are an experienced crocheter, this book is a disappointment, to put it lightly. I could imagine that perhaps children aged 8-10 yrs would find these projects appropriate to their skills in crocheting, otherwise the designs are just dull and unpleasant. I am truly very sorry to say this, but this book is a waste of money.

Quick, simple and beautiful ornaments even for beginners.
Excellent selection of simple and quick crochet ornaments. Don't be deceived by the rather "unfinished" look of completed items on the covers. The pieces work up well and the Ruffled Wreath is stunning and a real eye catcher. Includes a clever stocking pattern and several different fans. Very clear line drawn crochet basic stitches with good explanations. Crochet instructions are clear and I found no typos. Excellent for beginning thread crochet.

This book requires you to rip out the cards. I found this to be very tedious. The study cards were marginally helpful. I would spend my money elsewhere.

Expensive and full of typos... ( Ex: Vous apelez-vouz...) Lots of them. Not very useful. I suggest that you save your money. They are better books out there for French learning.
