Price of Power: Biography of Charles Eugene Bedaux

excellent story of most interesting manager/adventurer.
this book gives a compelling story of a self-made millionaire, creative and adventurous. The Author makes strong case that Bedaux was actually NOT a NAZI collaborator, but rather sacved many Jewish lives and fortunes from Hilter's perils.Bedaux' explorations are well worth the read as are his contributions to 20th Century management.Bedaux was a facinating figure in this time in our history,,,,more should be written about his life and times.

Facinating Personality!
I have researched Charles Eugene Bedeaux and find this work the very best on his facinating life. I now firmly believe he was NOT a Nazi sympathizer, but in reality did all he could to use his position to subvert Nazi efforts in France. Ask the old men of Tours who still remember all he did for this French town!

Jim Christy is a superb researcher and writer. I highly recommend this book....it reads more like an adventure novel!

When is the movie coming-out?????

Short On Sources And Facts
This is sort of a touristy little version of a fascinating historical case. It might make a nice souvenir from a local gift shop, but it won't satisfy any serious reader or tackle any of the important questions the story raises. Were any contemporary accounts of the haunting published at or near the time? (Apparently not, unfortunately). Did Andrew Jackson really visit the Bells? What record exists that he did? (In fact, the evidence to substantiate this seems to be lacking). You can find a great deal more hard information on this extraordinary episode on any of several websites. The attempt to link the ultra-colorful and complex personality of the spirit known as Kate to some lights flickering in a cave near the site today is especially dubious.

Super!
Anyone who has an interest in Tennessee's most famous ghost should check out this book. It takes a long and complicated story and breaks the facts down in a clear and easy to read way. I have read several of Mr. Price's books and this is by far the best. We even get an update of "Kate's" activities into the 1990's.

Is the Bell Witch still in Adams, Tennessee? I don't know but reading this book has made me want to go over to Robertson County and find out. On the other hand, if she was too tough for Andy Jackson I might just stay here.

A great retelling of this fasinating and mysterious story!
I found this book to be a very interesting page turner. Mr. Price is a great writer who knows how to keep your attention. I have enjoyed every book of his that I read and this one is no diffrent.I live less than 2 hours from the small community of Adams and have been to the locations that Mr. Price writes about. What I really enjoyed was that he not only told the story, but also told modern day stories about things that still go on in Adams, especially around the cave and Red River(both of which are on or near the old Bell farm). The one thing that seperates the Bell Witch from other supernatural stories is that hundreds of people at one time or another witnessed it, even Andrew Jackson himself, and this book tells about these events, too. So if you want a story to read for folklore, history , or a dark night ,get this book. You won't be disapponted.

Peanuts Collectibles Book
This book was an big disappointment, and not as advertised. It only contains an small amount of information on Peanuts Collectibles. I would not recommend it.

Healt-felt words and pictures for the Schulz Collector.
Wonderful and warm. Shows the heart and soul of Peanuts collecting. It's not just a price guide, it's a friend.

Extremely Helpful
If you are looking for a single book that displays a wide variety of Peanuts Memorabilia, this is the one for you. I was surprised to see almost every item I've collected over the years presented in this book. The only downside that I found was the lack of space given for plush items, and toys. Nonetheless, you will not be disappointed.

must for Bukowski collectors
A-Z for Chjarles Bukowski material. The prices are reliable (for now) and the section on periodicals is worth more than the book's modest price.

Strange, but interesting
A very detailed description of what happened that day. It's a strange story, but it fascinated me fro beginning to end.

One of the strangest 'executions' ever
When I first heard this tale I found it hard to belive. Without knowing the story, and the time when the hanging took place, it would be impossible to think that an elephant hanging could take place in the U.S., but it did.

Charles Price does an excellent job of telling this story using the very few deatils that exist regarding the hanging. By tracking down the last known living eye-witness Mr. Price was able to recreate the scene of the hanging in his book using first-person testimony. Through his research and interviews Mr. Price has successfully documented this strange moment of history thereby taking a piece of Southern folklore and creating a fact-based document before before all witnesses to the execution had passed away.

The book is illustrated with ink drawings in several places and the famous photo of elephant Mary hanging from the gallows is included as well.

Great fun!
Mr. Price has a good writing style that makes this book a joy to read. It will keep you interested from cover to cover. The only drawback is that he mixes documented ghost cases with folk tales and old legends with no clear pattern. As one who enjoys documented stories of ghost sightings I found this aspect of this book a bit annoying. Still the book is great fun and if Mr. Price was willing to put a little more work into research he could be one of the great American writers of ghost stories.

The Mystery of Ghostly Vera: and Other Haunting Tales of Sou
An enjoyable read of about two dozen short stories of the supernatural. Many are folktales passed down from generation to generation of supposed true occurances, some with eyewitness accounts and historical data of southwest Virginia. My favorite was "A Very Sensitive Child."

Goldmine Picture Sleeve Guide Not Worth the Time and Trouble
I bought this book thinking it would give more detailed values for pictures not found in other record guides. Instead it was the same information. The picture sleeves that where displayed where quite common. I would have expected rarer items. I would not recommend this book. Go to record shows to see rarer picture sleeves.

Useful, informative, and visually entertaining
I enjoyed the large amount of illustrations and the nice color section. A broad range of musical genres is covered and is the most complete and detailed cataloging of sleeves to date.

Extremely useful and fun to browse
One of the few good things MTV did for music was that it encouraged record companies to put out more 45 r.p.m. singles with picture sleeves. So for the same price as 45's that just came in standard sleeves (like the black one that just says "Columbia" at the top in thick white letters for example), you'd get a color (usually) picture of the artist (usually). Sometimes they were less interesting, maybe only showing the logo for a movie the song was from, like the hits from `Xanadu'. Often the records were only issued with a sleeve regionally or for just a fraction of the single's general release. Which of course, makes those sleeves rare and the object of irrational collectors' desire. This book shows, however, that picture sleeves were around since the beginning of the "Rock Era" (circa 1955) and before. Plenty are pictured, some rare and many not so rare.

Who knew that the sleeve to Bob Seger's tacky "Horizontal Bop" from 1980 is worth $80 bucks to some people? Or that people are actually looking for the sleeve to "Nightbird" by Stevie Nicks even though the song itself isn't hard to find? Yet I remember having trouble finding Huey Lewis' "The Power Of Love" from "Back To The Future", and it's hardly worth anything. Ditto for "The Lady In Red" by Chris DeBurgh.

There are several guides to records that include information on picture sleeves, but this is the only one I know of that focuses exclusively on sleeves. Great for those with general interest in record collecting, or to see if you've managed to save something that's actually worth something ("Gee, I wonder if this sleeve for the Stones' `Street Fighting Man' is worth anything?"). Obviously of more interest to collectors, but enough pictures to entertain a more general audience.
