The best short essay work I have seen on this subject
In line with much of the new non-fiction surveys and studies, the book, in short essays gives the picture on much information that I have not seen before on the Gold Rush and the aftermath. In particular it gives a reader a chance to compare the Internet investment frenzy with the Gold Mine stocks frenzy in the 1860s & 70s.

The information is concise and beautifully and fascinatingly written.

Finding the answers
Loved this book. The layouts of the poison plants are easy to understand. Gives you a clear color picture closeup and distance shots of the plants. A a US map for the habitat -- great description of its actual locations i.e. "moist conditions preferring the edges of receding reservoirs and ponds." Describes the toxins involved then gives you clinical signs diagnosis and treatment for the animal. You need this book in your barn!

Handbook of Mineralogy: Silica, Silicates

Excellent and complete
This book, in fact this whole series, has been excellent from the start. The amount of information provided is a little slim -- there are no crystal drawings, no forms listed, and no atomic arrangement information -- but all needed physical properties are given.

Just buy the whole series and you will not be disappointed.

Historic heraldry of Britain: an illustrated series of British historical arms, with notes, glossary, and an introduction to heraldry
Published in Unknown Binding by Phillimore ()

Very specialized, but a very nice book
The College of Arms commissioned a series of 142 modeled and painted panels and shields in connection with the New York World's Fair of 1939, which were presented to the United States at the outbreak of the war. Most eventually went into storage at the Smithsonian until their resurrection in this volume on heraldic art. All are illustrated, described, and put into historical context, and they range in time from Simon de Montfort and "Strongbow" (Richard, Earl of Pembroke), through Cromwell and John Milton, to Cecil Rhodes and Ernest Rutherford.

Greek Poems for Greekless Readers
With Homer, you can still appreciate the Iliad and the Odyssey in English -- indeed, the recent translations of Robert Fagles capture the movement and energy of Homeric verse quite well. With Theocritus, however, a translation is a wretched substitute for the Greek, since the exquisitely refined beauty and charm of his poems simply cannot be reproduced in English. What makes Theocritus such an enjoyable experience in Greek is the Doric dialectic in which he writes, his manipulation of the hexameter verse (the same 6 beat verse used by Homer), the echoes of Homer and other authors, and similar curiosities.

Theocritus wrote in the 3d century BC, during the so-called Hellenistic period which arose after the demise of the classical Greek city-state. This era was, in many respects, the first "modern" world. Theocritus was a Sicilian who wrote around 270 BC. He was highly original -- he invented pastoral or "bucolic" poetry, a genre which had a very long and distinguished run in subsequent Latin and European literature. Appearing in the works of this poet for the first time are the cowherds, goatherds, and shepherds playing the pan pipes under the shade of spreading trees, bantering with each other as they sing their rustic songs. If you wish to appreciate Vergil's Eclogues, Spenser's Shepheard's Calendar, or Milton's Lycidas, to name a few of the more well known examples of the form in later literature, you must at least have a taste of the master who invented this important genre.

In this Penguin paperback edition, Robert Wells offers up straightforward, readable translations of the 22 "Idylls" (meaning "short sketches") which are commonly attributed by scholars to Theocritus. Accompanying the translations is an excellent 52 page Introduction which provides the general reader with important background information about the poet, his art, his era, and his compositional techniques.

WARNING!!! The poems of Theocritus are not intended for poorly educated or unsophisticated readers. Do not attempt to read these poems if you lack imagination, curiosity, and an appreciation for the delicate craftsmanship of a sensitive and learned poet

This book helped bring me to Orthodoxy
In the midst of the theological quagmire of the American religious scene, this book stands tall. I read this book as a part of a Modern Theology class in college. I was amazed at its clarity and its directness.

Anton Ugolnik is a gifted writer who takes you on a journey through Communist Russia, showing examples of Christians who kept their faith in the midst of overwhelming repression. But he also shows quite well how Orthodoxy "fits" in America. It is a rich book, covering areas as vast as theology, political theory, hermeneutics, and the like. After reading this book, I finally understood the doctrine of the Trinity.

It is not a Summa of Orthodox thought, or even Father Ugolnik's Magnum Opus, but it is a true diamond in the rough-- a refreshing break from the soulless theological meanderings that have overridden the Christian thought in America.

excellent
a pocket book that has almost all you need to know. it's concise, giving you just the information you need. Updated from the latest reviews published in journals. If you are not satisfied with the information given in the book, or you think it's not enough, you can still read A TEXTBOOK OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES. remember this book (the same as all pocket books) is best to be used during rounds, or to have a quick reference of a certain subject. You won't be dissapointed.

Good Regional Sourcebook
Mithril is an excellent first sourebook from Sword and Sorcery. It gives a good overview of the city itself (although the city map is of at best average quality), provides details of the church of Corean (with new rules for paladins and monks as well as one new prestige class), and includes excellent regional material for the northeast portion of Ghelspad.

Specifically, the book gives us a map and description of Mullis Town (as well as a few adventure hooks), and shows a map detailing the human, titanspawn, and orcish areas of influence in Lede. The adventure hooks are well done, as they incorporate sufficient detail to make "filling in the blanks" easy, but remain concise. The descriptions of the various orcish tribes and their political/social environment is a great jumping point for a campaign that could treat orcs as more than faceless cannon fodder.

Equally important, Mithril itself, despite its lawful good character. has a wide variety of options and tensions within that can lead to all manner of adventures - ranging from exploring the ancient catacombs beneath the city to ethnic human/half-orc conflict to political and religious intrigue.

Overall, a good book and a great buy. Although, like most S&S products, the art is all monochrome (and frequently not up to the standards of Wizards of the Coast products), this is a minor complaint because the content is great.

Mr Scarborough's Family

Authors: Anthony Trollope and Richard Mullen

One of Trollope's best.
This is one of my favorite Trollopes (and I've read 35 so far)! It is witty, clever and has plot twists worthy of the best suspense writers. This one deals with one of Trollope's favorite topics -- the law -- with the usual romantic crises thrown in, of course. Excellent book and I highly recommend it.
