Dreams Do Come True
As Susan Ann Darley writes in her lovely book, "The power of constructive love is simply purified and refined energy that flows, unimpeded by negativity, to assist and uplift all." In addition to being an author, Susan is a personal empowerment coach who assists people in learning how to charge themselves to "live their dreams," and make their aspirations a reality. In reading The Power of Constructive Love, you will discover how this remarkable woman empowered herself, and now shows others how to do the same in their lives.

Reading this book will teach you how to get past the negative forces and false beliefs which may be holding you back. Susan writes in a flowing and forthright manner which will touch your heart and motivate you to move into your divine light and truth. She shows us how to release destructive influences and bring forth our true passions and goals. Susan notes, "The power of constructive love is unconditional love that supports, encourages, uplifts, heals and trusts as opposed to conditional love that judges, criticizes, dictates, diminishes and belittles."

I strongly recommend this book for anyone who chooses to begin living their dreams, and you will find yourself being enchanted in the process. This delightful work contains many pearls of wisdom which will inspire you to reach for the stars, capture them and watch as your dreams begin to come true!

A profound, inspiring, guided journey
Susan Ann Darley's How To Live Your Dreams Through The Power Of Constructive Love is an effective self-help book about learning to harness the power of one's thoughts, will, ambition, and compassion for love, success, and spiritual growth. From paying heed to the wisdom of one's intuition to taking command of one's destination and achieving life-long dreams, How To Live Your Dreams Through The Power Of Constructive Love is a profound, inspiring, guided journey, accessibly written in no-nonsense, easy-to-understand language focused on the need, attitude, and means to truly enjoy and make the most of our lives.

A One Person Version of the Curriculum.
This version of Cakes for the Queen Of Heaven is an excellent presentation of the weeks long curriculum offered in UU churches. It's a shame for it to be out of print. Shirley, consider Print On Demand. Some publishers will publish out of print books free.

Kujibizana: Questions of Language and Power in Nineteenth- And Twentieth-Century Poetry in Kiswahili (African Series, 4)
Published in Hardcover by Michigan State Univ Pr (1998)
Author: Ann Biersteker
Amazon base price: $39.50
Average review score:

Quite extraordinary!
Ann Biersteker has produced an extremely insightful and quite extraordinary piece of art. Bearing in mind that literature is the collective memory of a people, she points out what a significant role language plays in literature. She stresses that language is not just a means of communication, but also a carrier of culture. In Swahili Poetry we find unexpected elements of resistance and it becomes a fascinating undertaking to trace the development of a culture in the language of its poetry. Biersteker also emphasizes how rich the heritage of Swahili Poetry is and it occurs to me that her text should be included in many syllabi in East Africa to foster an appreciation of the East African identity. Especially students of history and literature will find her work helpful since it provides such insight into power-relationships that explain the events of the 20th century. This book is a fabulous reading experience, although I must say that knowing the Swahili language made the reading much richer. I thoroughly enjoyed the balance between analytic text and melodic poetry. I also appreciated the authenticity in research and the credibility of sources. This book is definitely a brilliant source for further studies in East African poetry, but also East African Political Thought.

Write on, sisters!
This is a fantastic anthology of feminist music criticism. With plenty of variety, information and verbosity, this 500-page tome is a veritable feast of wit.

Spanning the last few decades and mainly American-based, Rock She Wrote reveals the polemic and visionary deliberations of a host of women, including New York journalist Ellen Willis, who was stimulated by New Journalism and Critical Theory in the late 60's. And just as you'll never get bored hearing how Patti Smith "f--ked with form", or how women are ghettoised within the industry, neither is it tiring to rediscover the roots of Riot Grrrl as defined by Sassy magazine.

From the radical rhetoric of San Francisco's Tribe-8 to Kim Gordon's Sonic Youth tour diary, to Courtney Love being interviewed by Pamela Des Barres, to Susan Brownmiller's Rolling Stone piece on the vilification of Yoko Ono, to bell hoks' attack on Madonna, it's an all-encompassing read.

An Excellent Book! Essential Reading!
A much needed, practical book on how to make writing work easier while at the same time producing higher quality results. Ann Loomis does this by using personality type and brain hemisphere theories to describe the natural gifts and potential trouble spots of different people. Other books have done this, but what makes this book so valuable is the abundance of tools, examples, and techniques you can apply to make your writing process yield successful results. This book is also unique in the way that it describes the writing profiles of all sixteen MBTI types and how to use your type preference to your benefit. For those of you who don't particularly like to write but are required to, working with ideas in this book will make your job easier -- and you may even start to enjoy writing. For those of you who like to write, you will find many ideas on how to make your writing more appealing to people who are very different from you. At the same time, it will give you renewed confidence that your style needs to honored even when others are trying to tell you to do it their way.

Wanted Dead or Alive: The True Story of Harriet Tubman
Published in Library Binding by Turtleback Books Distributed by Demco Media (1991)
Authors: Ann McGovern and Richard M. Powers
Amazon base price: $10.95

Wanted dead or alive
It was in the year 1820. A babygirl was born. Her name was Harriet Tubman. She was born in Maryland. She was born in a cabin. The book is about slaves that are negros. And that they all lived in Maryland because there slaves. All the slaves were mistreated. The slaves needed freedom.

The message is that you you should help other people that need your help. You should never give up on what you want. Like the slaves wanting to be free.

My opinion, it was cool because the slaves were given called diffrent names. When they were older they were given another name. My opinion is that it is not good to have slaves. It was a good book.

excellent
every child should have this book, every school, my daughter adores Harriet and this was helpful in showing her what led to the Civil War, the "whys" and the Underground Railroad. GREAT!

One of the Best Children's Books of All Time
I don't remember why I first picked this book up, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. I introduced the book to my teacher, and he became so interested in it that he read it to the class. The next time the class went to the school library, they borrowed all the copies of this book - 10 copies in all.

The author has a way of making the reader feel like he or she is in the story - if not as Harriet Tubman, then as someone close to her.

With all the junk being fed to kids nowadays, putting a book of this quality in front of them could pique their interest in reading.

okay
I did not think that this was a bad book, just slow. I really enjoyed NEVER BEFORE and I am looking forward to NEVER SAY NEVER, but this one just didn't keep my interest. To tell you the truth, I read about 2/3 of the book then didn't bother finishing it to find out who did it or how Gavin reacted when Raine revealed her true identity.

Best of the Series
Never Again is one of the best historical romance novel I've ever read. The characters are so thoroughly taped that you can feel their happiness, pain, and remorse.

Feeling that she has inadvertantly destroyed MP Gavin Sutherland's life with her cartoon depiction of his arguement with another MP in Hyde Park when the other man and his lover are murdered, Raine Montand (Raynard the Fox) sets out for a remote seaside community to help Gavin restore his reputation. Disguised as a widow to a British soldier she applies for his secretary opening.

Disowned, alone, and bitter Gavin Sutherland reluctantly hires Raine Jennings without asking too many questions, yet his close physical proximity to Raine wets his appetite about her past. As she assist him in piecing together his mystery novel he can't help but fall in love with her b/c she offers him encouragement and hope.

Jo-Ann Power makes our heart ache with their emotional conflicts. Raine feels she is unworthy of Gavin b/c she has caused his downfall, therefore must leave when his reputation is restored no matter how much she loves him. Gavin on the other hand is chaffing at the heart b/c Raine will not allow him to say "I love you" so he expresses it with his actions instead. What it all comes down to is when Gavin will learn Raine's identity, will he forgive her, and can she forgive herself?

Jo-Ann Power has written a superb novel in Never Again. The story flows well, and the dialogue is wonderful and touching. From Raine's side-stepping of Gavin's questions to his fustration with her secrets, Ms. Power has written a treat.

One of my favorite books of all time!
To find characters you love, characters who come alive so vividly they remain in your memory forever is a rare joy in fiction but one Jo-Ann Power so expertly gives the reader in Never Again. Subtlely weaving together romance, suspense and history, she draws us into a love story that is both realistic and bigger-than-life. Raine is a woman we all wish to be -- strong, smart and ambitious. When those traits combine to lead her into a hurtful mistake, instead of being just sorry, she fights to make it right. Gavin is a man we all wish we had -- noble, proud, independent. When those traits lead him into seclusion instead of after the one who destroyed his reputation, we ache for him. The tension created when he begins falling in love with the very woman he should hate -- and would if he knew her true identity -- pulls the story taut throughout the development of their extremely sensual, intelligent relationship. I couldn't put it down. I'll Never Say Never , but I can't imagine the third in the trilogy could be better than this, but I certainly intend to find out!

Feel No Fear: The Power, Passion, and Politics of a Life in Gymnastics
Published in Paperback by Hyperion (Adult Trd Pap) (1996)
Authors: Bela Karolyi and Nancy Ann Richardson
Amazon base price: $13.95
Used price: $3.99
Average review score:

I'll give it a 9.
Karolyi does a good job of writing his life story and his long career in gymnastics. It is an interesting viewpoint from a gymnastics coach. After reading Little Girls in Pretty Boxes (by Joan Ryan) one often feels cynical toward gymnastics coaching methods, especially Karolyi's. However, this book helps one see his side of the story. He talks about the training of young gymnasts, the unfair politics in the sport, as well as the difficulties of living in a Communist country and later as an American immigrant. It's too bad it only goes through the 1992 Olympics and does not include the Atlanta games.

The book well reflects Karolyi's powerful personality, and has an interesting voice. The title is definitely appropriate.

Bela is the BEST!
Bela Karolyi is such a inspirational man to take what little he had and make winners. I had the advantage of meeting this man this summer. He seems like a father figure with strong discipline and a positive effort. I always loved it when he 'You can Do it! " Which is all so true when you use your body in a positive way in the sport of gymnastics or any other sport.

This is one of the GREATEST gymnastics books EVER written!
It tells the entire story of Bela Karolyi's life and it tells the stories of the many famous gymnasts he has coached. The book makes you appreciate this man more than anything else could! I read it before I met him at Karolyi's camp and it made it THAT MUCH better!!

Sweet, but not wonderful
Allure is a nice book, but not as good as some of Jo-Ann Powers other novels. Try the American Beauty Series: Never Before, Never Again, and Never Say Never for truely excellent romance (especially one and three).

curious
The book seemed ok to me. What I do wonder about is where is the review from Newton Mass.? Apparently, this author took strong exception to that reviewer's comments. While I understand how hard it is not be be overly sensitive to negative remarks about one's writing, it seemed to me that the author over-reacted. She should have answere the reviewer based on the logic of her argument and should not have resorted to name calling. It appears that Amazon has not even printed the review so why is she so incensed.

Another Gift to Readers by a Talented Author!
ALLURE is another scrumptious delight for readers by an author who researches her period minutely, peoples it with strong, believable characters, then serves up a dish not to be missed! Ms. Power remains one of the very few in the romance genre who takes finite care with her historical accuracy and who offers her readers those rare tidbits which make for the finest experience. As usual from Power's novels, one gets not only a meant-to-be love story between intelligent people, but also an excellent education, this time in impressionist art. Flavor that with an intricate mystery and you have, once more, the very best in historical romantic entertainment. Bravo, Ms. Power!
