Moving account of British in China through youthful eyes.
Recently I have taken a great interest in Eastern Philosophy and through my searches for books about the subject I came across "The Ford of Heaven" by Brian Power. The writing is not so much about philosophy as it is about the author's being born and raised in China, until he went off to school in England just before WWII. There are some very philosophical moments in the book and there are even quotes of Taoism and Confucianism. The best aspect of the book is the author's account of the people of the time, both the Colonials and the Chinese. My enjoyment of the book was so high I read the whole thing straight through (less than 200 pages). I decided to get on my computer and find more information about the author and to my surprise I found the book is no longer in print, nor is another of his closely related books. That, my friends, is a true shame

The challenges and the many problems encountered in the current air traffic control system.

A Critical Appraisal
Margin for Error: None is a critical appraisal of the air traffic control system of the US ... The Author's admiration for the air traffic controllers and others working in the system is a content feature of this book as is his disregard for the FAA ... Aircraft Illustrated

Appreciated by All Air Traffic Controllers
After reading Margin for Error: None I have come to the conclusion that I wish I had 16,000 PATCO members with your attitude. I am sure that the morale problems that exist among ATC would soon be healed. Thanks again for your kind words and your supportive attitude. It is sincerely appreciated by all Air Traffic Controllers. Domenic V. Torchia, Regional V.P, PATCO West

Spider-Man Revisited
Writer Brian Michael Bendis set out to reinvent and reinvigorate Marvel's hallowed Spider-Man franchise in this landmark series. Judging from the critical acclaim and market success it's had, I'd say he met his goal.

Spider-Man was originally created in 1963 and while his origin story is a comic book classic, let's just say some of the elements within the story have become somewhat dated. Bendis' rehash of Spidey's origin sets him in modern times, with the look of a modern 15-year-old, and the characters speaking in...you guessed it...modern dialogue.

Bendis has done a fine job of updating the character and doesn't give in to the temptation to pace the story too quickly. He takes his time, building up the characters and the story of how Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider and subsequently given super powers.

Mark Bagley competently, though not spectacularly, illustrates the story. Bagley's artistic storytelling skills are excellent, but I think Marvel might have been better served had they gone with a less traditional artistic style on this book.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN: POWER AND RESPONSIBILITY is a great new beginning for Spider-Man and appeals to fans of all ages.

Bendis Tells The Genesis Of Spidey A Little Hipper, Cooler
'Ultimate Spiderman' is the almost perfect retelling of Spidey for the 22nd century. I think this is a one of a kind story, because i'm pretty certain no other author has attempted such a project.

First off, let me start by saying Brian Bendis is a FANTASTIC writer, and he clearly donates some of his greatest talents to this comic-book. How? Well, the characters. Peter is somewhat nerdy, but not necessarily uncool, making him likeable. Uncle Ben is, as always, the kind uncle, but is also calm and cool, and definitely the epitome of strength and respect. Mary-Jane is definitey toned down, soft-spoken, and intelligent but hip. Flash Thompson is every bit the bully, and is complimented by new cronies.

Bendis also shows off his ability of unique storytelling by taking a slower, more relaxed approach to the spiderman legacy. New characters are intoduced slowly, and the story unfolds slowly, easily, and never misses a beat. And these reasons make Ultimate Spiderman a must buy.

'Power And Responsibility' tells the origin of Spiderman, and introduces Mary-Jane, Uncle Ben, Kong, Flash Thompson and Liz allen (breifly).

Comics for Everyone
Hats off to Marvel for making comics accessible again. Ultimate Spider-Man is a great comic that anyone can read and relate to. It tells the story of a nerdy high school sophomore who suddenly finds himself in possession of fantastic powers. It's an old story, with a hero that will be familiar to almost anyone. After all, Spider-Man is one of the most recognizable characters in entertainment history.

But what's this "Ultimate" about? Spider-Man is a character who was created in the sixties, and since then he's been dragging forty years of continutity and backstory. Ultimate Spider-Man approaches the character from the ground up, with a contemporary voice and pop culture references that place the book squarely in the 21st century. This Peter Parker isn't married and successful yet; he's barely coming to grips with his powers. The origin is updated, the villains look different, and nothing about the hero's future is set.

Longtime Spider-Man fans may still be more comfortable with the original character that they've grown up with. (The "classic" Spider-Man is still thriving and his ongoing series is currently enjoying the excellent writing of Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski.) But for those who lost interest in comics years ago, or those who are approaching the medium for the first time, this book is absolutely perfect.

The writing, by comics wunderkind Brian Michael Bendis, is awesome. Dialogue is sharp and sparkling with very authentic voices. The art is attractive and expressive. The stories are easy to follow, even for a first time comics reader. It's a comic that anyone can enjoy, and one which I strongly recommend. I loved it, my girlfriend loved it, and I'm sure that you'll love it.

Inside Secrets to Venture Capital

A must have book for any entrepreneur looking for capital
A complete guide to venture capital covering all aspects from understanding what venture capital is, to writing the business plan to negotiations, written in an easy to understand, practical manner.

Hill and Power have done extensive research through their surveys of 250 venture capital firms, interviews with partners in VC firms and experts in their field. And it shows, "Inside Secrets To Venture Capital" provides comprehensive coverage of the world of venture capital.

And it's entertaining as well, I loved the "Deal Tales".

If you're interested in venture capital, this book is a MUST read.

A riveting, resourceful book full of wit and wisdom
Inside Secrets to Venture Capital is similar in caliber to many college course books. It's written in a concise, contemporary manner that offers wit along with wisdom. The authors cheerfully nuke business-related myths while providing entrepreneurs with a wide range of splendid information.

Hill and Powers spent three years surveying investors and entrepreneurs. Well worth the time and effort. This highly organized book, loaded with fascinating statistics, offers special mini-sections in three categories: advice from angels, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs.

Inside Secrets to Venture Capital doesn't pretend to have all the answers, but provides enough data, resources, and insight to ensure that all entrepreneurs find the right resolutions. While it may well become the consummate reference for entrepreneurs in search of funding, it should also be required reading for potential angels, venture capital investors, and anyone seriously seeking a business degree.

Valuable handbook and reference guide
Raising capital is a mystifying process for most entrepreneurs. They get very little feedback from potential investors on the quality of their business plans, the packaging of their deals, the presentation of their opportunities, and the underlying strength of their business strategies and value propositions. This situation is complicated by differing scope and levels of advice between professional service providers, such as accountants, attorneys, and management consultants. Entrepreneurs waste valuable time trying to raise capital ineffectively, and as a consequence, their businesses suffer.

Inside Secrets to Venture Capital takes the mystery out of the process. It is a valuable handbook and reference guide to entrepreneurs, professional service providers and investors. In a clear and logical format, the book addresses the issues to consider when raising venture capital, and then describes the process in detail. The book is rich in case studies from entrepreneurs, professional service providers and investors on their actual experiences. Most importantly, the book contains feedback from actual investors on what works for them and what doesn't.

Inside Secrets to Venture Capital is a necessity for anybody in the field of raising capital."

Wanted dead or alive
It was in the year 1820. A babygirl was born. Her name was Harriet Tubman. She was born in Maryland. She was born in a cabin. The book is about slaves that are negros. And that they all lived in Maryland because there slaves. All the slaves were mistreated. The slaves needed freedom.

The message is that you you should help other people that need your help. You should never give up on what you want. Like the slaves wanting to be free.

My opinion, it was cool because the slaves were given called diffrent names. When they were older they were given another name. My opinion is that it is not good to have slaves. It was a good book.

excellent
every child should have this book, every school, my daughter adores Harriet and this was helpful in showing her what led to the Civil War, the "whys" and the Underground Railroad. GREAT!

One of the Best Children's Books of All Time
I don't remember why I first picked this book up, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. I introduced the book to my teacher, and he became so interested in it that he read it to the class. The next time the class went to the school library, they borrowed all the copies of this book - 10 copies in all.

The author has a way of making the reader feel like he or she is in the story - if not as Harriet Tubman, then as someone close to her.

With all the junk being fed to kids nowadays, putting a book of this quality in front of them could pique their interest in reading.

Messages from the Masters : Tapping into the Power of Love

Great book - but only if you've alraedy read the others...
Dr. Weiss is an excellent writer, and his books are top priority for anyone wishing to know the basics of rebirth, and ultimately the meaning of life! But If you don't start with "Many Masters, Many Lives", and then follow on to "Only Love is Real", you'll just think he is just another "New Age Pseudo-Guru"... Here, Dr. Weiss goes even deeper on the findings about the simple and powerful meaning of Love, in the "cosmic" sense, and anyone interested in some easy-to-understand instructions should read it. By the way: This one was issued FIRST here in Brazil (about six months ago!)

Universal wisdom, Amazing stories, Practical advice
The "Masters" are highly evolved souls not in physical form who pass along messages of love, wisdom and universal truth. Psychiatrist Brian Weiss, famous for his books on reincarnation, received these messages through various means including his own meditations and the past-life regressions of his patients. Whether someone is a long-time spiritual seeker or just beginning their spiritual journey, there is so much of value in this book!

In each chapter, I'm impressed by 3 things: (1) the quote from the masters that opens the chapter, (2) the amazing stories Weiss shares, and (3) the plethora of practical advice.

(1) Each chapter begins with a quote from the masters about 1 to 2 paragraphs long-a lot of wisdom packed into a few words. These messages include the importance of love, forgiveness, patience, meditation and visualization; and information about reincarnation and life in spiritual form. Although these messages corroborate other spiritual and metaphysical books I've read, it's great to have messages on so many topics succinctly boiled down to their essence in one book.

(2) Each chapter contains fascinating stories that reinforce the masters' quote which begins the chapter. The stories come from many sources including Brian Weiss' life, his regression patients and workshop participants, and experiences with talented mediums such as James Van Praagh. The stories are truly amazing, and if the reader believes the author is telling the truth, provide incontrovertible evidence the existence of the soul outside the human body via out of the body-, between life-, and reincarnation experiences. I recognized several stories from Weiss' previous books, but most were new. There were numerous cases of hypnotic regression patients, mediums, and workshop participants accessing information that no one would know except an individual and his or her deceased loved one, plus some spine-tingling "coincidences".

(3) "Messages from the Masters" is far more than wise quotes and cool stories. I'm impressed by the depth and wisdom of the advice. For example, in his chapter on psychics and mediums, Weiss devotes 4 pages discussing 10 rules of thumb for separating real ones from the fakes. Likewise, his chapter on teachers discusses discerning real teachers and gurus from pretenders. I'm impressed that the book doesn't just preach "peace and love" but provides so much practical advice one can use on a day-to-day basis. In addition, Weiss' commentary on the fallacies of modern psychiatry is quite interesting.

(4) Bonuses - Appendix A provides 7 spiritual teachings, each followed by passages from the sacred writings of major religions: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. Appendix B provides 2 meditations one can read into a tape recorder: a past life meditation and a healing meditation with dolphins.

Bottom line: this book is full of wisdom, fascinating stories, and practical advice. I highly recommend it to beginning spiritual seekers, long-term spiritual seekers, and skeptics alike.

A Book of Surprises!
When I picked up a copy of "MESSAGES FROM THE MASTERS" by Brian Weiss, I expected lessons from famous prophets and gurus throughout history. Instead - I discovered a collection of spiritual advice and anecdotes focusing largely on past-life regression that delivered an important message: that we are the masters and that anyone can be an invaluable teacher in life. There is a sense of urgency in this book as Weiss entreats the reader to be gentler on himself, to see life as a means of learning the lessons we need to grow, and to see that we are all love. By relaxing the mind, Weiss tells us, we can become aware of who we are, of how powerful we are.

In my own life, I have found awareness to be the key, and another excellent book on the subject which I very highly recommend is another bestseller called "WORKING ON YOURSELF DOESN'T WORK" by Ariel and Shya Kane. A truly magical life is possible and both these books are excellent guides to discover it for yourself.
