Very little help concerning water dragons. Better information can easily be found on the internet. Next to useless for the beginning water dragon owner.

Anoles, Basilisks and Water Dragons
Great book for a person just getting started with anoles, basilisks or water dragons.

easy reading/very informative
Check out the section on Australian water dragons if you get this book. The photos are beautiful and the paper quality is great (glossy). Dick Bartlett is a good writer, having written not only several reptile manuals, but also many articles in Reptiles Magazine and the Vivarium. Please check out the Australian water dragons again. I have to find out where to get some because I want them...:-)

Do NOT use this book
I took Latin I and II using the Ecce Romani series. When I switched schools, I had to switch to using the Cambridge Latin Course Unit 3 book for Latin III. It is a very poorly written textbook. The new vocabulary for each chapter is not put together very well in a way that makes it easy to learn. Since there are many little stories in each chapter, as opposed to the one big one and occasional second enrichment reading in the Ecce Romani books, there is vocab under each story. They tried to make a vocabulary list at the end of each chapter, but it never contains all the vocabulary listed under each story. The Ecce Romani books do a much better job of condensing the vocabulary and putting it all in one place, making it easier to learn. The Cambridge books are very confusing to look at and read because only proper nouns are capitalized. The back sections of the Cambridge books also only contain a Latin-English dictionary, so you're out of luck if you want to look up what an English word translates to in Latin. The Ecce Romani books contain both an English-Latin and Latin-English dictionary. The Ecce Romani series also does a much better job of explaining the grammar you learn each chapter. All the Cambridge books do is give you an example, not actually telling you how to form it in a sentence. The Ecce Romani books also have more challenging practice problems, and more of them, than the Cambridge books. On a more artistical note, the Ecce Romani books are much more interesting to look at, with color pictures that don't look like quick sketches, like the black and white Cambridge pictures do.
DO NOT buy the Cambridge series books. The books are very poorly written. The Ecce Romani series is a a much better Latin textbook series, which I highly recommend for anyone studying or planning on studying Latin.

As for the format of the book, I found it to be an easy read. Almost every stage begins with line drawings ("cartoons"), which introduces grammar, characters and sets the "stage" for what is to follow. Then there are a number of stories in each stage; proved for fun group quiz games (EUGE!). At the end of each story new vocabulary is included. Also there are vocabulary checklists, which you should know, at the end of the stage. Sometimes, the vocabulary at the end of the stories appears in the checklists further along in book. If this becomes a problem, my suggestion would be to make flashcards for each of the stages (proven study aid).

I do think that an improvement to later editions would be to include an English-Latin dictionary of the words used within the book, as well as pronunciation. Yet, nothing that an external English-Latin = Latin-English dictionary could not handle.

Valete!

Excellent Latin Textbooks
As a student of Latin for the past 8 years (starting with Cambridge) I highly recommend this series. It provides the fundamental basics of Latin in an easy-to-understand format. The stories are interesting and historical; the vocabulary provides a solid foundation for future study and the grammar is thorough but not boring. Students are involved with reading the language immediately and are thus able to see how the different components of each sentence interact. Not only do these books provide instruction in Latin but also in the culture and history of Rome.
Students of all ages can appreciate and learn from these books!

Unaccessible and dull
I bought this book to help me create a suitable environment for my veiled chameleon. The information I needed was printed within the pages but it was an extremely dull read. It was common to find scientific jargon without definition. The book is written by scientists whom I'm not convinced even like these wonderful, expressive creatures, it is full of lifeless facts which lead me abandon the book after reading only the pertinent chapters. To my horror, a crucial detail about female chameleon health was only mentioned in the breeding chapter, a chapter I had no need for since I had no intentions of breeding my pet. I found out too late that most female chameleons die egg-bound if unfertilized. Should this information have shown up in the Health chapter (which deals with very little in 4 short pages) my chameleon would still be alive. Previously, I read the entire 280 pages of The tarantula keeper's guide by Stanley A. Schultz, et al, this book is animated and written by a couple who truly love their hobby, it was a pleasure to learn as much about tarantulas as possible. Although, I am sure there is a book out there that does the same for chameleons, this one isn't it.

a helpful guide
this is a very good book, a lot of information. a must have for newbies and a good addition to any experienced herpers library

Great source of valueable info unlike other "picturebooks"
This book is great if you need basic information on a variety of different species. The section on setting up an incubation box is very helpful. Other books that are helpful in this manner are those written by Phillepe de Vosjoli. This books sexing techniques are helpful as well as the glossary of terms it provides and the illustrations of different physical characteristics of chameleons i.e crests and other such protrusions.

Not about the cage about the animal
I bought the book being a person who loves zoos and was expecting it to cover the materials, chemicals, theorys, and design/setup of the cage and what plants to use with what lighting but none of the above really appeared in the book a completely misleading title and poor purchase.

More and less
For each setup, a lot of space devoted to different types of animals and each types general care. Would have liked to have more information on design ideas, construction tips, and maintenance of actual terrariums.

Not exactly what it says!
I bought the book in hopes of finding out how to build a terrarium for a specific frog. Instead it quickly ran through a few different terrarium types and how to build them and then went on to describe all the many reptiles and amphibians you can own. I knew exactly the frog I wanted, I just needed to know a little bit more about their enviroment and what types of plants they like. Big disappointment!

Reptiles and Amphibians of the Amazon: An Ecotourist's Guide
Reptiles and Amphibians of the Amazon: An Ecotourist's Guide by Richard D. Bartlett and Patricia P. Bartlett is a 291 page paperback published by the University Press of Florida. Having read several of the Bartletts' guides to herp captive care, I was a bit disappointed by this effort. It appears that the Bartletts' main talent lies in husbandry and less in the realm of writing about field herping. The species overviews are weak and several are misinformed. The Bartletts refer to some species that do not even occur in the Amazon region while leaving several very important and common species out of the guide. This was surprising for a book that aims to furnish information on some of the more common herps throughout Amazonia. As a matter of fact, the majority of the reptiles and amphibians that are illustrated in this book are unlikely to even be seen by an ecotourist. I found the photo quality to be poor and numerous species were misidentified. Furthermore, the title is a bit misleading as most of the species represented in this book are from the Upper Amazon region of Peru, making this guide not as user friendly in other areas of the Amazon. I have traveled extensively, and the Amazon is one of my favorite spots to visit. I was really hoping to finally have a herp guide that would prove useful throughout the mighty Amazon. Looks like my wait continues!

A straightforward listing of species
A lengthy inset section of full-color photographs beautifully illustrates Reptiles And Amphibians Of The Amazon: An Ecotourist's Guide, which is a straightforward listing of species of frog, salamander, turtle, lizard, snake, and more. Each entry describes the species' appearance (with a note in regard to similar-looking species), habitat, reproductive cycle, and much more. Reptiles And Amphibians Of The Amazon an excellent catalogue and reference for field identification. Also very highly recommended is the Bartlett's A Field Guide To Florida Reptiles And Amphibians.

I found this series, the 4th edition, to be especially informative because of the inclusion of history and culture of the time period, in English, as well as colour photographs.

As for the format of the book, I found it to be an easy read. Not to very useful
I bought this book from Amazon.com, looked at for about thirty minutes, and moments later was prepareing to return it. It's so short, sloppy and utterly worthless it's unbelievable. The pictures are too small and the authors don't really give detailed enough information on what day geckos need to live in captivity. Compared to Mckeown's book and some of the more recent European day gecko books (sold at Amazon.com), the Bartletts' book is a joke.

Not worth its price....
This book is not worth even a few dollars. Better coverage of day gecko care can be found on the internet and in herp magazines. Barrons has yielded quality pet books in the past, but this pooplication leaves much to be desired.

Reasons why this book is such poor quality are apparent even at a glance. The pictures are too small. Hardly any information is provided on the proper substrates to use in vivariums for day geckos. Virtually nothing regarding temperature requirements for various species is provided. Some of the information provided is actually semi-dangerous the animals themselves. Most of the advice given in regards to maintaining day geckos outdoors is absurd. As if all this were not enough: the text is written seemingly at the elementry school level. If you really want a useful book about day geckos, I highly recommend The General Care and Maintenance of Day Geckos, by Sean Mckeown. It is the best guide to day gecko husbandry in the English language and is sold at Amazon.com.

In short, this guide is too small and does not provide enough detail to be considered useful even to the begininng day gecko keeper.
