Wonderful Compilation
This book is definitely worth the purchase. Some of Edgar Allan Poe's most popular writings, but also some less known that are equally valuable. This book essentially combines an economical price with a valuable amount of information, including a short biographical note about Poe himself. If you are looking for a research reference for any kind of report, or just to refresh your memory of some of his works, this is definitely the ideal book to add to your collection.

Truly a masterpiece! Full of horror and graphic imagination.
I felt chilled reading this collection of Poe's all time best stories. I especially loved the eerieness of The Cask of Amontialldo and the insanity of the narrator in the The Balck Cat, all so frightly believable. The illustrations top it off by adding a magical touch of frightful imagery to the collection.

One of the greatest books ever written!!
I read this book about a year ago and loved it. I'm the type of person who reads before they go to sleep and I had to put this book down because it was so frightening. I loved the way Poe drew me into the story and kept me begging for more. I was always curious to know what happened next, even if I was terrified. My favorite of all the stories was the "Cask of Amontillado". It was so creative how you became almost like a part of the story.

one of the best mystery books of all time
Edgar Allan poe can write mysteries like no other writer. I love mystery books but this one no other writer can compare to. Each mystery has a porpose, a meaning and a moral. Another great thing about the book was the wide time scale that the mysteries were placed on, in-fact one of them happend in the stone age and another in the 1920's. Over all it was an ecellant book and I would definatley recomend it to any mystery lover.

Good Collection of Poe Works
This is a collection of some works by Edgar Allen Poe. The book includes: The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Purloined Letter, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar, The Pit and the Pendulum, A Tale of the Ragged Mountains, A descent into the Maelstrom, The Black Cat, "Thou Art the Man," and Matzengerstein. It has been some years since I read the book, but I do remember enjoying it.

more a dark historical fiction than a mystery
When his spouse died, Edgar Allan Poe drowns his sorrows by frequenting the local bars and over indulging. His disenchanted former protégé Augie Dubbins comes to Philadelphia to find Poe. Augie finds a shell of his mentor whose depression is bone deep. However, Augie has some good news. The Quintillian Society head Dr. Alfred K. Brunrichter wants Poe to come to Pittsburgh as his houseguest while providing lectures to the rank and file members.

When Poe and Dubbins arrive at their host's mansion, they are stunned as Brunrichter looks like Edgar's twin. The doctor wants Poe and his cohort to investigate the disappearance of several women in the last month or so. As Brunrichter keeps Poe in a virtual state of stupor with ether, Dubbins begins a search for the lost ladies. However, when Dubbins is accused of murder, Poe shakes off the daze to start his own inquiries including into that of his benefactor.

Though well written, DISQUIET HEART is radically different in mood and tone than the superb ON NIGHT'S SHORE. The sleuthing by Poe and Dubbins comes late in the tale, as the novel is more a historical fiction than a mystery. Instead readers glimpse a depressed pessimistic Poe spiraling into addiction. Still, the story line grips the audience as the atmosphere of 1847 Pittsburgh and Philadelphia vividly seems real through the actions of Poe and Dubbins. Though very gloomy, readers will appreciate Randall Silvis' latest tell tale Poe adventure.

The Cask of Amontillado and Other Short Stories

Another good Poe short story
"The cask of Amontillado" is another fast-paced short story by the master of nineteenth-century writer.

As happens with many of his other stories, the main themes in "Amontillado" are revenge and the torture ob burying someone alive. The main characters uses his knowledge of famous-labeled wines to lure an enemy, who also is a wine-devoted man, into a fantastic and terrific trap.

The short stories written by Poe leave the reader with ambiguous feelings: being short, they are fast to read, and you get to know the ending very quickly, in an almost hysterical way; but also, you get the feeling that everything could be more well developed (characters, plot, etc). Anyway, thaat was how Poe liked to write his tales, and they are very good just the way they are.

Grief be upon those who do not buy this book.
From the sorrowful and melancholic lines of "Ulalume" to the exclamatory rhymes of "The Bells," this thin volume has it all. (Well, not exactly all, for this book does not have some of the lesser known poems of Poe such as "To Isadore," "A Paean," and "An Enigma" - but it is nonetheless a great book to have.)

For big Poe fans, especially, this is true. There are so many anthologies which carry about two or three of his poems, but it is not easy to find one that is solely dedicated to his complete poetry. Usually, it is his short stories that attract publishers' attention.

Since Poe's poetry is so beautifully-written and delightful to recite, it's good to have a book on which you could look at whenever you forget a Poe poem, or simply want to read or reread one.

Edgar Allan Poe never left behind as big a bulk of literature as Charles Dickens or Henry James. In fact, compared to many other classic writers, he didn't leave much behind. So, indeed, what little he left can all be contained in within a section of a bookshelf. So why not own his work?

Poe was an excellent literary thinker, whose imagination will never be rivaled. And to those who enjoy good poetry, this book must be in within your bookshelves.
