An interesting book on a not so interesting topic
This book is very readable and clear. It makes a potentially boring topic interesting and understandable. It is insightful and helps make the point that trusts are important for those with even just modest estates. It is a bit repetitious at times and contains a few too many personal stories, but it is otherwise motivating and a very useful guide for those unfamiliar with the legal world.

A Must Read to Protect Your Family & Your Financial Future
This is a simple, easy to read book about how to protect your money, savings and your assets. It reads like a novel with good stories, yet it has information like a reference book that you can easily refer to over and over again. I had never heard of the authors before, but when I found out it was a Time/Warner Book of the Month Club Selection, I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. You will be too.

Solid biography
Not as good--or as long--as her Verdi, Phillips-Matz's new bio of Puccini is solid and competent. She is at her best with scenery, at her weakest with the music. Though this biography will not soon replace Mosco Carner, it's worth the purchase price and the reader's time.

Puccini: a restless visionist and revisionist
Having sung in "Tosca" and "Madama Butterfly", my interest was piqued when I first heard about Mary Jane Phillips-Matz's wonderful new biography about Giacomo Puccini. Using his operas as chapter divisions, the author gives a firm basis on which to look at Puccini's life as he struggled with his music, his collaborators, his family, his publisher, his singers, Arturo Toscanini and himself.

Restless and constantly on the move was Italy's greatest twentieth-century composer. The composer was not content to stay long in one place, she tells us. He had a house here, a house there; he didn't like this one, he longed to be at yet another one....this was no laboratory musician! Through the sharing of Puccini's letters (and he wrote unceasingly, it seems), Phillips-Matz offers us glimpses into the continual torment the composer faced, either from his own high standards and inabilities to finish projects to the endless revisions of present and past operas on which he was working. Puccini seemed to be under perpetual pressure. The author is careful not to be judgmental about her subect; in fact she includes a surprising number of revealing interviews that she, herself, conducted with singers who had performed Puccini operas and had worked with him in his later life.

Phillips-Matz's book is not so much a book about Puccini's music as it is about process. How did the composer go about choosing texts? What was he feeling when he composed? How did he envision the final outcomes of his operas? The relationships with those who were closest to him are perhaps the best aspects of this book, especially those with his wife and Toscanini. The author almost seems to be encouraging the reader by saying this: "here is what Puccini was like; now go hear his music and see what connections you can make."

How to Defend a Bridge Hand
Published in Hardcover by Crown Pub (April, 1994)
Authors: William S. Root, Phillip Alder, and Alan Truscott
Amazon base price: $25.00
Used price: $5.99
Average review score:

Thorough but uninspired
There's no question that William Root knows what he's writing about, but I found this book rather dry and uninspiring. Still, it's well organized and formatted with lots of example hands and reading it would certainly be of some value to the improving player.

I'd recommend "Card Play Technique" by Victor Mollo instead.

A comprehensive study of defense at contract bridge
A major contribution to bridge literature. Deals comprehensively with the subject. Written on exactly the right level. 1994 Bridge Book of the Year.

Defend with Root
Bill Root's "How to Defend a Bridge Hand" is an excellent book that teaches one to learn the foundamentals of defence in bridge. It covers all the important facets of the defence. The quiz after each chapter and the 36 random quiz are useful for one to review the materials covered in the book. No doubt one will benefit a lot from reading this book. The only concern for me is that the problems presented in the book and quiz are all with the goal preset: you need to defeat the contract by "exactly" one trick. I would like to see the book include problems involving, e.g., matchpoint considerations and judgement on when to take the tricks (sometimes setting the contract is not the goal of the hand)

Errors in ingredient quantities
Be careful as you mix from this book. It makes me wonder whether the previous reviewers actually used the recipes to make muffins. Page 12 1 cup(4 oz/125g) page 17 2 cups (10 oz/315g)

page 18 1 cup (5 oz/155g) 1 cup (2 1/2 oz/80g) 1/2 cup (3 1/2 oz/105g)

The errors are on about every other page as one continues through the book.

A Nice Selection of Easy-to-Follow Recipes
This book has a nice combination of tried-and-true favorites (corn muffins, banana bread) and creative, newer recipes (Buckwheat bread, triple-chocolate muffins). I've tried several and I always get rave reviews. The oatmeal raisin made with buttermilk is a standard at office parties. The recipes are easy and every recipe is pictured in color! I think this book is great additon to any cooks collection.

Fool-proof Recipes
I've tried almost every recipe in this book and they come out perfectly without fail. Excellent book for the pro or novice. Easy to find ingredients and easy to follow instructions. Pictures accompany recipes. Final product usually resembles picture. Most people will find that these recipes will yield the desired result.

1968 Firebird 400 Convertible
Not the most detailed book.
(Get Fabulous Firebird for that)

But for some good color pictures and brief explainations
its fine.

A little short on first generation.

Good book
A good book. Excellent pictures and lots of lesser known facts, etc. I would have rated it 5 stars, but the book seemed to lack a certain sense of organization. It would give the horsepower numbers for one year, but not another. There were essentially no tables of data about horsepower or available options and the years. I would buy "The Firebird Redbook" if I was going to need this for buying a used Firebird, however this book is excellent if you want a good overview of the entire story of the Trans Am.

An excellent source for Firebird & Trans Am enthusiasts!
This book is a wonderful resource to have on hand. I reccomend that any collectors, enthusiasts,or restoration specialists purchase this book.

Not only does it include high-quality photos on every trim-line available (including Esprit,Firehawk,GTA,& Formula), but also details, through the text, many of the lesser known options. Some of the earlier paint options are also detailed, with color-photos. I have never seen such a well organized publication, which focuses on differences in the model through both year & trim line. This reference also includes information on why the changes were made.

For the enthusiast, there are enough pictures to make you want to purchase an additional book, just to hang up all the photos.

Those interested in restoring their vehicle to its original glory can use the full color photos as a guide to interior fabrics, striping options, and proper decal/emblem placement.

The hobbyist should find the original ads, sales history, specs, and introduction section of the book offers a unique new look at the history of these cars.

Anyone who is interested in purchasing a Pontiac Firebird or Trans Am should also purchase this book, as it is an excellent resource to what is available in the used car market.

This book, unlike most Firebird books on the market, focuses on the theme & flavor of the car, the concept,if you will, rather than the numbers. This book gives the reader a sense of what a Firebird really stands for-more than just your average sportscar, this car has a unique place in Pontiac's history, and has influenced the car-buying market since its introduction. This book helps the reader to understand why.

A good resource for teachers
This is a good resource for teachers of debate; however, I found it a little difficult for students to understand without a lot of guidance from me. The language is a little technical, but for my use in the classroom it was adequate.

An excellent resource for teachers and students of debate
Focusing on the major types of debate that common for high school students, this book is designed to serve as a primer on debate, although it would be a useful resource for more experienced debaters also. The first several chapters deal with the building blocks for argumentation -- analysis, research and reasoning, with exercises and discussion topics included after each chapter. The authors then turn to a nuts-and-bolts coverage of the three most common types of debate -- Lincoln-Douglas Debate (where the debate centers on a value propositions); Two-man or policy debate (where the debate centers on a broad question of public policy, such as foreign trade or education reform); and Student Congress, or parliamentary debate (where the debate is conducted pursuant to Roberts Rules of Order and the discussion centers on specific items of mock legislation). This nuts-and-bolts section covers the essential elements of a case, the relevant burdens of proof and argumentation, and the particular skills that are so important to each type of debate. The book seems to be designed for easy use as a textbook (a Teachers Guide is also available from Amazon), but it would work well as a resource for self-study, too. I was involved in competitive Forensics through all of high school and college, both as a student and as a coach. Based on that experience, it is even more obvious to me what a difficult undertaking the authors must have faced when putting together this book. Debate is, after all, an activity that really can only be learned by jumping in and doing it. This text is the perfect supplement to that type of a teaching program. Students can get a quick handle on the fundamentals, start having debates, and then use the text as a resource for lessons as those debates present them with problems. This book is an ideal learning tool, with plenty of examples and exercises, and it is written in a straightforward, accessible fashion. I have reviewed a number of these types of books, and Basic Debate may be the best debate book available for teaching and coaching debate at the high school level

A disappointment for me
After all the rave reviews, I couldn't wait to start this book. What a disappointment it was. I found the characters shallow and totally unlikeable, the plot impossible to follow, and in general....just a boring book. I read to the end but now I don't know why I bothered.

Strong and weak
Superstar author William Bernhardt here assembles a cast of fellow mystery stars to provide an entertaining legal tale that shows the positives and negatives of collaborative novels.

First, the positives--Collaborative novels are hot! Few things are as intriguing as multiple popular authors under one cover. The reader is able to sample the works of authors s/he may not have read before along with old favorites.

All of the authors included in this book are top-flight stars. Bernhardt starts this novel with a bang, laying out the murder mystery and primary characters in light fashion. Each subsequent author then adds to the plot and adds a new twist of his/her own. In the final chapter, Bernhardt then wraps up all the loose ends of this convulted tale, solves the whodunit, and ensures a happy ending. The plot moves along well and the book can be easily read in a day or two.

The negatives?--Many of the same things that will make some people love this book. Because each author has unique style and views of where the plot should go, the tale can flow very unevenly. Characters likable in previous chapters become villainous in later chapters. Details presented in earlier chapters become inconsequential later in the story. This will disappoint readers more accustomed to a favorite author. Perhaps a previously agreed-upon plot outline may have minimized some of this confusion.

Overall, however, collaborative novels are written as novelty -- fundraising for the Nature Conservancy in this case. While this novel isn't superior in its quality, it is a whole lot of fun and it has definitely introduced me to some mystery writers that I may not have sought out otherwise. This book is well worth the time.

Big Scary Trouble, Big Scary Rabbit
While ostensibly a "legal thriller" about the death of a tycoon, in reality this book reads more like a zany combo of chase movie/murder mystery, with a lethal cross-dressing assassin targeting one character after another. The authors then throw in adulterous rich people, a secret organization avenging corporate misdeeds, a giant pet rabbit with a hi-tech secret, and a defense-attorney heroine with a secret benefactor. A group of famous mystery writers each wrote a chapter of this book, whose profits benefit the Nature Conservancy (hence the title), with each chapter throwing in a new plot twist and ending in a cliff-hanger, until the hilarious end. Might make a lively TV movie, and definitely makes for a fast, fun read.
