good collection of poems
Breakdown Lane is one of the latest collections of poems by Robert Phillips (as far as i know, only the awesome _Spinach Days_ has followed). While not as good as spinach days, breakdown lane is a worthy collection. It starts with "Face to Face" which is what i feel is Phillips' best poem. The collection is divided into four sections, and only section 2, full of those poems about lost love, is weak.

The heart of the "constitutional debate."
The condensing of Reid's work from the four volume set allows a student to see the major point of the constitutional debate between the colonists and thier British rulers in the late colonial period; the conception of a constitution of Parliamentary Command/Sovereign Authority (Britain) versus a constitution of Customary Rights (American Whigs). It also deftly explains the concept of "constitutional avoidance" as a basis and strategy of resistance. Some of the depth in Reid's development of the five "authority" bases may be lost in the abridged edition, but that hardly detracts from the value of this edition for the student of the American Revolution.

The Education of Phillips Brooks (Studies in Anglican Histor
I have read this wonderful book, written by a friend and neighbor - I chanced on this link while looking up Phillips Brooks, who was quoted on my home page this morning. In the selection, Brooks said there will be hard times, but now, in the quiet time, is when we cultivate character, so that we will be always ready when we meet temptation or grievous adversity. Woolverton - a very energetic, witty, funny man - and his writing are exemplars of this quiet, which we all need desperately.

Worth searching for
JOHN KOCH: PAINTING A NEW YORK LIFE was published as a catalogue for an exhibition and has become one of those fine books that didn't last beyond the time of the exhibit. Finding a copy is like searching for the end of the rainbow. But once found, you will wonder why this 'catalogue' wasn't converted into a book for the American libraries. John Koch was a fine painter, in the manner of Sargent, Eakins, et al but confined his paintings to either myths from the past or myth-like settings in the current New York society that admired his works. His talent was genuine, his sense of space and atmosphere among the best, and his figurative works stand with the best of them. This book is rather short on information but rich on exposing us to the works of an under-appreciated painter. Definitely worth going to the search engines for a copy. I would highly recommend that the transition to a second printing (and beyond) be considered by the author and editor. It is just too fine a book to let disappear!

Wonderful introduction to a troubled author
After reading, "Point of No Return," I was interested in learning more about the author of this intriguing novel. Millicent Bell's literary biography fills the bill in spades. I came away with a much greater understanding of John P. Marquand, and how his life intersected with his characters, plot and theme of the book I had read. In addition, the biography offers analysis and commentary of the author's novels, which gave me a fuller critical perspective. The fact of Marquand's own unfulfilled life can be fruitfully read into the analysis of "Point of No Return" and his other novels, as well.

Animal House with a twist.
An entertaining, occasionally hilarious romp through the college years of a 'dumb kid' who writes a musical, delivers pizzas, and, oh yeah, designs an atomic bomb.
