PRACTICAL AND READABLE
This handbook is perfect for the second year psychiatric resident on an inpatient service, or the mental health practicum/intern student in a community mental health center. The authors review basic concepts of psychotherapy and then apply them to the individuals with serious mental illnesses seen in these settings.

As a teaching attending, I found this book to really fill the gap left by the residents' overly abstract "Introduction to Psychotherapy" course. Many interactions with patients/clients are potentially psychotherapeutic and this book gives readers numerous examples.

Excellent !!! Covers everything (almost)!!!
As a beginner in the area of fMRI research (just started my Ph.D.- engineering - image analysis), I found this book to be a complete and comprehensive intro to the subject, written by the leaders in this field form all over the world. It covers everything in the right amount to give you an understanding of what is involved in Functional MRI. However, no one book can cover everything in this subject just because of its multidisciplinary nature that ranges from neuroscience to engineering and physics. It also covers some areas more in more depths than others. I found the physics part to be a little weak and not very well explained. The rest of the book is just Excellent. If you need to go deeper into any one single subject like neuroscience, physiology, image registration ...etc the book will point you in the right direction to get this info from the top people in their respective fields.

No heresy to tout this book as one of Peters's best!
One of Peters's best plots. Despite Cadfael's absence in the middle of the narrative, this chronicle kept my attention. This is a deeply religious experience as Peters examines some of the origins of Christian dogma through her characters. As always it is Peters's style that sets it above the common mystery. Trurly one of the best of the Cadfael series.

A Great Guide to XP
As a business user in publishing who's just upgraded to Windows XP I found this book excellent. It's mercifully free of jargon and provides a comprehensive guide how to get maximum use out of XP. XP is fast - but it's significantly different in appearance to previous versions of Windows. I'd recommend this guide to the general home XP user as well. It supplies all the basic info you'd expect - creating folders and files, printing, internet use, shortcuts, using the explorer bars - as well as some you might not (eg. how to customize XP for a user with a disability). For the business traveller there's a helpful section on how to use XP on a laptop, including tips on how to specify new dialing rules, use a calling card and encrypt folders.

As someone who in the past has struggled even with one of the Dummies guides I found this book very straightforward as it cuts its way through the jungle of faxing, blocking or routing messages, security settings and conferencing with Net Meeting. Not to mention how to set up a distribution list or a Newsgroup account.

The section on Administrative Tools Demystified is very useful. As the authors point out, data has an inherent tendency to fragment and no user, no matter how expert, can avoid this problem. The advice on checking for disk errors and defragmenting files is lucid and to the point. With this guide every XP user should be able to optimize their system for peak performance.

The book has a pretty neutral tone (unlike the sometimes irritatingly folksy tone of the Dummies series), though a dry wit sometimes surfaces. The section on what the authors' call XP's plumbing aims to supply "all the information you need to appear very knowledgeable the next time that bad-tempered tech-support guy barks his questions at you".

A final section is devoted specifically to business projects. Topics include setting up a small network, working with a client/server network and last but not least troubleshooting system problems and errors (including guidelines for setting up a diaster recovery plan). A useful glossary defines terms like "Ethernet address" and explains enigmatic acronyms (IAB, IANA, ICANN, ICS, IETF etc).

For business users this is definitely the authoritative guide to XP Professional but XP Home users should find it useful too since it also covers features like Media Player and Movie Maker, printing photos, protection from viruses, working with floppy disks, and all those other things which the home PC user is likely to use.

Panoramic photographer captures spirit of local scene
Peter Randall is a New Hampshire native whose gift for capturing his local surroundings on film are only enhanced by his use of a panoramic camera. Using a special camera which records onto a 2.5 by 6.5 inch film, the author has collected images of the local scene which stop the casual browser and command close reading of the details within his compositions of farm, forest, and ordinary town scenes. This is a book to spend a quiet evening examining and exploring what someone with love of place and skill with camera can do

Great for small groups
The Fruit of the Spirit series are excellent books for Christian small groups. Each chapter consists of a very short introduction, a bible verse and about ten questions of progressing depth to facilitate group discussion.

The group can go as fast or as slow as it likes. The "leader" should encourage everyone to share, before moving on to the next question. The back of each book contains short notes that can be used by the leader.

I highly recommend Patience as well as the other Fruit of the Spirit small books for your Christian small group.
