Entertaining but sometimes childish
If you are a true Disney fan, then buy this book. It cronicles what it is like working at "The Happiest Place on Earth". I recently bought annual passes to Disneyland and I thought it would be cool to know what "really" goes on at the Magic Kingdom. Unfortunately, in this book, many of the stories are from a while ago. Another thing I didn't like about this book was the way the stories were told. The author made it sound like some of these events happen everyday when in fact they are odd occurances that happened once or a few times in 45 years! Overall, decent book. It is very easy to read and entertaining.

Great Insider Book!
I finished it in one sitting. I had read the first book years ago, and they are quite humorous, as well as insightful. It's more like an insiders view of Disneyland and it's inner workings, and failure among management. Interviews with current security, employees, and previous employees give you the behind the scenes stories you won't find many places. In fact, many of the people interviewed for the book wouldn't allow their names to be printed in fear of being fired! It's quite a remarkable book, IMHO. It details how low morale, job eliminations and lack of training lead to serious injury of two guests waiting in line in 1999, and one of them never regained consciousness and died a day later. It also details the more known Disney deaths, as well as the shenanigans employees played throughout the park, stories about the people inside the character costumes, and other assorted goodies. This book is full of little facts that I'm sure Eisner doesn't want you to know. I firmly believe Walt is spinning in his grave.

Koenig combines both the facts and humor of Disneyland
More Mouse Tales, a closer peek backstage at Disneyland, is a humorous book as well as and informative one. It tells the stories that you never get to hear inside the park. This book is fun to read during most of it, but it also has it's dark periods, in which it contains the story of what really happened in the Columbia incident that led to the death of a Disneyland guest. Over all, this is a wonderful book that adults can enjoy, but kids should not read, until they are older, that way they can keep remembering Disneyland as the Happiest Place on Earth, and not the Tragic Kingdom.

Great Book
This is a great book it is the first that I purchased before diving into automobile painting and I still frequently reference it. It is a bit dated by today's standards but, still covers the basics very well. I also own John Pfanstiehl's Automotive Paint Handbook (which is also excelent) and Don Taylor's & Larry Hofer's Paint & Body Handbook and this compares favorably to both of those. Pay attention to the captions there is a lot of good information to be found there. All in all it is a great book and I recommend it. It is a great reference to have around.

excellent book
I'm not sure why some have called it disorganized. I found it well laid out with NOT too many photos and plenty of text. I found the content a bit more dated than John Pfanstiehl's Automotive Paint Handbook or Boyd's Coddingtons's How to Paint Your Hot Rod, but still an excellent choice. BTW these three books will give you all the info you need.

Best book on the subject of automotive painting.
Although, you should never rely on one source for all of your information. This book is very good in explaining the detail of the basics on painting any automobile. I kept this book near me as I painted my own car.

I have yet to see a better book on the basics of painting an automobile. I recommend this book for any of you who are a beginner.

Guide to the National Park Areas
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (1992)

Not enough detail or information
I agree with the reviewers who say this book is less than complete. Very sketchy descriptions. Fromer's guide is MUCH BETTER.

Excellent Guide
This guide was a present for our 40th anniversary. We found it very useful and highly recommend it to other travelers who wish to learn more about our national parks. We didn't even know about many of the parks that are included.

Excellent Reference
My wife and I found the Scott's guide to be an excellent reference during our first try at visiting the national parks. Especially worthwhile is the coverage of many small areas that are included. We highly recommend this book and the accompanying guide to the eastern park areas.

Informative, but tedious and repitious at times
Good book, but the authors writing styles are somewhat 'horrible'! Very repititous in some parts. A decent buy...(I lost my copy, and I will be buying another one and reading it again...)

Could have been less technical
This book would have been more accurately titled " 176 pages of technical reasons why you can't build a dinosaur." I realize that these are complex issues, but it was still quite dry in places. On the other hand, I did read the whole thing. I guess I was hoping they would say that bringing a dinosaur back was just around the corner.

If your a fan of Jurassic Park get this book, you'll love it
I have read both Jurassic Park and the Lost world, and if your like me you wish it could be true. In this book two scientist take you on a first person view of what it would be like to be on Jurassic Park and how (if possible) to build a dinosaur. You will learn first hand how close, or far away Steven Spielberg was to the real thing. You will learn a lot of informaion on building a dinosaur like what you would need, were to fing the DNA (not where you would expect, or Spielberg for that matter.) You go to the labs with the scientist and get to make a baby dinosaur. So if you would like to make a dinosaur later in your life read this book!

Man, Light, and Time
The subtitle of Prof. Park's book is "A historical Essay on the Nature and Meaning of Light." That promise is faithfully kept in a thorough, erudite, and entertaining narrative. Park, a physicist, seems equally at home as historian, philosopher and classicist. Paying meticulous attention to the nuances of thought and language, he traces mankind's twenty-five century struggle to understand the phenomena of light and vision, beginning with Empedocles in Greek antiquity and ending in the quantum-mechanical era of Planck, Einstein and Bohr.

With scholarly patience, Park dissects and illuminates the struggles of early investigators to get a grip on the baffling mysteries of light and its interaction with the human eye. This often requires the author to pick bits of sense out of mounds of nonsense. He points out, for example, that even the wildly mistaken hypothesis of visual rays emanating from the eye led to some correct conclusions about geometric optics. Park also underscores the fact that taking the next step puts even the most accomplished scientists at risk. For example, Newton's particle interpretation of light incorrectly called for an increase of speed on passing from air to a denser material and (due to his influence and prestige) delayed acceptance of the wave interpretation pioneered by Huygens and conclusively demonstrated by Young. In an ironic twist, particles of light returned with a vengeance as thoroughly modern quantized photons.

Aside from some minor errors and omissions in figures, the only factual problems I encountered came on page 165, where convergence point P in Figure 6.5 is incorrectly called the focal point of the lens (this would be true only for incoming rays parallel with the optical axis), and the inverted real aerial image formed by the lens is misidentified as a virtual image.

Perhaps the most distinctive quality of "The Fire Within the Eye" is Park's astute and encyclopedic grasp of historical context. One senses that he is telling only a fraction of what he knows about the lives and times of the philosophers and scientists who populate the book.

Elegant!
A must read for everyone interested in Light. It explains everything - dual nature of light, polarization, diffraction, interference, colours, light as vibration of the fifth dimension, etc. Is useful both for the layman and the expert reader. The book's simplicity is its biggest advantage. From simplicity arises elegance.

It is Ok but...
First of all the interior artwork is very charming, featuring some humerous line drawings. I gave it an extra star for that. As for the content, this book is OK but... I could not help wanting more. It looks big but has these huge margins on each page that are repeating what is in the text, most of the time.

It covers many ranges of the camping topic, but it does not cover any of them deeply enough, or make solid reccommendations. For example on the tents section, they cover the basic shapes of tents and lightly review what are some of the best points of each, but it is a thin review. They do not make any outright reccommendations and it is like the light fluff stuff you see in the Saturday newspaper articles. Most subjects are glossed over very quickly. I guess I am spoiled since I have quite a few books in my camping library to draw from. The books offered by Cliff Jacobson are good even though they are shorter, and are offered here at Amazon.com as well. The best I have found is the "The Backpackers Handbook, 2nd edition". Also the "Roughing It Easy" book is really good if you like a book that tells you how to amke your own gear and camp economically.

Super guide
With many photos and illistrations, Simple Tent Camping is a must have book for anyone interested in spending time in the great outdoors. The book walks the reader through the steps of buying equipment, planing a trip, setting up a site, cooking food, first aid, and even provides lessons for taking trips by canoe. If you are new to camping, or looking for a more in depth guide, Simple Tent Camping is a must have.

Much insight from the Parks Commission point of view
This book explains a bit of the history of magic of Mackinac Island. Much of the perspective of the book is from the Parks commission point of view. The history depicted inthe book is very well constructed. I learned much I did not know from this book and recommend it.

Banff National Park : how nature carved its splendour

Banff National Park
For anyone who sees earth's beauty, and wonders what made it so, this is a wonderful book. Weave your way through Banff National Park, using geological formations as guideposts to the history of earth. Imagine the tremendous forces that created the scenery before your eyes; glaciers, huge thrusted mountain belts, glacial valleys and lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs. Also look at the minutia, the marine fossils that are held within the mountain rock. Issued by the Geological Survey of Canada, it is a guide to understanding, and in that a revering of one of nature's most beautiful places. It is easy to read for the non-geologist, and contains many pictures, a fold out map, and an index. It is also small enough to be easily carried in a backpack.

Childe Hassam: An Island Garden Revisited

Better than the original.....
Somewhere in one of my many boxes of books I have a copy of a reprint of the original book by Celia Thaxter, "An Island Garden". I have written a review about this book for Amazon elsewhere, and said it wasn't very good (it isn't) and received many negative votes. My major complaint about the "other" book is that you cannot see the brush strokes in the paintings. The book obviously appeals to those who care not a whit about brush strokes.

Fans of Child Hassam--this is the book you want. No, it isn't the cute little book by Thaxter. The reproductions of Childe Hassam's paintings of Celia Thaxter's island in CHILD HASSAM: AN ISLAND GARDEN REVISITED are 100 times better--and you can see the brush strokes. I can't give this book five stars, because I collect art books know the reproductions could have been better. However, the reproductions in this book are head and shoulders above those in Thaxter's book. Not only that, David Curry has included much text about life on Thaxer's island and in her famous parlor.

If you are a fan of the American Impressionist Childe Hassam, you will appreciate knowing something about the artist, his work, his friends, and his relationship with Ms. Thaxter. Most of all, you will be able to see what he painted and get an idea of where you might locate some of the originals. They are still hanging in various places such as the Walter's Gallery in Baltimore and other esoteric locations.

Decent, but not as good as other books
This book takes each Disney animated movie, and analyzes it with the following subheadings: Original tale, Disney version, plot holes, bloopers, strange/critical reaction, attractions made, cutting room floor, and hidden images.

This book was more slow moving than his behind -the-scenes expose of Disneyland. If that's what you're looking for, purchase the Mouse Tales books. You won't find much interesting here. On the other hand, if you'd like to hear how the movies evolved, and enjoy uncovering hidden Disney images, this is a good book for you. You should be a fan of the animated movies to read this book, as there's little else here of interest.

It held my interest---but not by much.

Interesting glimpse behind the scenes of the masterpieces
I was surprised to find that Koenig's book details movies all the way up to Tarzan, and even hint at the future with the fact that "Treasure Planet" was planned long ago.
Filled with fascinating behind the scenes glimpses at the production of the movies, along with trivia notes and things to catch, this book makes watching the Disney Animated Features an extra special treat.
You'll learn about the missing songs from the classics, and just how Disneyland and WDW got their famous rides.

Recommended for the Disney phile- particularly those who want to study each film piece by piece now that most of them are available on video.

Entertaining Behind-The-Scenes Tales
This book presents a fascinating glimpse at the making of Disney's animated features, including story changes, bloopers, and theme park attraction tie-ins. My fiance and I are having a grand time looking for the bloopers cited for the various films (e.g., Gaston's disappearing and reappearing musket in "Beauty and the Beast"). I especially enjoyed seeing what original story lines were planned for each feature, and learning what scenes were removed because they didn't work. If you are a fan of Disney's work, you will doubtless enjoy learning how the films might have been different. Even some of the rides at Disneyland have changed in concept from their initial development due to changes in films. A very entertaining read indeed.
