what a rip!
The is downloaded copy of the NIAM website, and a list other research websites. I learned more from Google.

Very useful tool
This book has really served me as an extremely useful tool to search for information about my husband's disease.
I would recommend this book to not only patients but also their families.

The Book's Audience
Designed for people who are new to spinal stenosis, this sourcebook has been created for patients who have decided to make education and Internet-based research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it is designed for patients who are less familiar or are new to the Internet as a medical research tool. It tells the reader where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to spinal stenosis, from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are compiled and reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on spinal stenosis. Following an introductory chapter, the sourcebook is organized into three parts. PART I: THE ESSENTIALS; Chapter 1. The Essentials on Spinal Stenosis: Guidelines; Chapter 2. Seeking Guidance; Chapter 3. Clinical Trials and Spinal Stenosis; PART II: ADDITIONAL RESOURCES AND ADVANCED MATERIAL; Chapter 4. Studies on Spinal Stenosis; Chapter 5. Books on Spinal Stenosis; Chapter 6. Multimedia on Spinal Stenosis; Chapter 7. Periodicals and News on Spinal Stenosis; Chapter 8. Physician Guidelines and Databases; Chapter 9. Dissertations on Spinal Stenosis; PART III. APPENDICES; Appendix A. Researching Your Medications; Appendix B. Researching Alternative Medicine; Appendix C. Researching Nutrition; Appendix D. Finding Medical Libraries; Appendix E. Your Rights and Insurance; ONLINE GLOSSARIES; SPINAL STENOSIS GLOSSARY; INDEX. Related topics include: Cervical Spinal Stenosis, Degenerative Lumbar Spinal Stenosis, Familial Lumbar Stenosis, Lumbar Canal Stenosis, Lumbar Spinal Stenosis, Lumbosacral Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Spondylotic Caudal Radiculopathy, Stenosis of the Lumbar Vertebral Canal, Tandem Spinal Stenosis, Thoracic Spinal Canal Stenosis.

The Official Patient's Sourcebook on Sleep Apnea
Published in Paperback by Icon grp int (2002)
Author: James N. Parker
Amazon base price: $28.95
Average review score:

Maybe good for new patients?
I might have found this book to be a useful reference, had sleep apnea been new to me. Having advanced questions, I felt disappointed. I failed to note that the author has written Official Sourcebooks about a remarkable variety of disorders. I would prefer a book by a physician. The reader might do as well with a web search.

Very helpful for new patients
This book definitely serves as a great tool for new patients. It not only points to the right sources of information on this disease, but also helps in finding contacts with people suffering with this disease (support groups, etc).

Practical Computer Vision Using C

Too much printed source code...
This is a beginners book for grey and bi-level image processing. This book is kept in a simple language, and is mathematically not too demanding either. However, it covers a lot of printed source code which is not supplied on a cd or floppy.

Most mathematical equations are given in blocks of C-code, so that the reader first has to figure out what the relevant mathematical equation might be. This book demands only some basic understanding of C, and as the author righly says (p.124): "Although the philosophy in this book is to present code that is as clear and simple as possible, rather than presenting the niftiest algorithms and most highly optimized coding technique, it should be pointed out that there are faster ways to scan through all of the pixels of an image".

Clueless to Image Processing? This is the book for you!
For those of you looking to enter the wild and wacky world of image processing, this book is all you need! It starts at a very basic and understandable level and leads you gently into an the area of computer imaging and image processing by matrix manipulation. Although this book is written, as its title suggests, for C programming, it gives a good basis for image processing in any language. The code examples are extremely useful if you are using C but you will soon find yourself confident enough to write your own. This is a definite must for all you budding image processors. Enjoy!

i threw this book away
The title of this book is misleading. For over 200 pages I got to read all about his family, his holidays, his pets, inside jokes, and other uneventful detail. Once in a while for a couple of pages he would slip in something about how he armed pre-teen children to fight in the jungles. If his book was his personal reflections, the title shouldn't say it's about CIA operations in Laos.

Excellent! Real people - Real PATRIOTS!
It is good to see a "down to earth" book like this, coming from a "been there, done that" author. As far as I am concerned, this book should be mandatory reading for all high school history teachers. It would be nice to see the future generations "completly" educated. A 68-69 Udorn RTAFB, Thailand veteran.

very indepth and detailed
I truely enjoyed reading this book. I especially liked the character developments of each person and their envolvement during the Vietnam War. i believe that Mr. Parker has a great understanding of the incidents as relating to the CIAs' involement in the Vietnam War.

A waste of time.
I don't care to write too much about this book, because it just wastes more time.

Too much effort was put into this book and it was all futile.
Not enough "real hard evidence" supports anything reported in this "tabloid" type of book.
I felt like I was reading the National Enquirer (hardback version) than a book about Elvis and his manager.

This man obviously used a lot of other people's material, from other books, and added his opinion: which doesn't amount to much.

I like Scotty Moore and what he did for Elvis, but he was always kept in the dark about Elvis' business. So his comment about how much this book was an eye-opener is expected.

This was a waste of my money, but even moreso my time.
I would rather read something more substantial.

A fascinating insight into The Colonel & into Elvis' career
I like to learn about Elvis from the inside out. This is unquestionably one of the best and most interesting books I have ever read about Elvis' career. It is a fascinating and enlightening insight into Colonel Parker and thus into Elvis and his career also. Dickerson's approach takes you down a road I don't believe has been explored before. He has done remarkable research into (i) what influenced and shaped The Colonel and enabled him to emerge as a revolutionary and unique manager and (ii) into the underlying cultural and political forces of the time that greatly influenced the course of this particular piece of history. If you are serious about learning about Elvis and The Colonel, Dickerson's writing makes you think; it opens doors and suddenly so much becomes clear. The first half of the book is, perhaps, kinder to The Colonel than the second half; but, above all, if you want new and interesting information and great insight into these two gentlemen (Elvis and The Colonel), this book is brilliant. This book is well worth your time and money.

What the experts have to say!
FROM THE BOOKJACKET:

"James Dickerson's research has confirmed more than I ever suspected"--Scotty Moore, Elvis's guitarist and first manager

"An indendiary, powerful investigative account . . . an explanation, finally, of the twisted, corrupt relationship between Elvis and Colonel Parker"--Joe Eszterhas, best-selling author, screenwriter and former writer for Rolling Stone magazine

"This jaw-dropping biography of Tom Parker confirms what I felt for years--that the Colonel was a far more fascinating rascal than Elvis ever became. This is a model of research assembled with crafty objectivity and humor"--Hal Kanter, director of the Elvis film "Loving You"

"Here is the whole sad and amazing story of 'the most accomplished con man since Barnum.' In swift, deft strokes Dickerson has sketched the greed, compulsion, and lies that drove every decision in the making of undoing of rock and roll's greatest talent. This is the book our study of popular culture's most glittering icon has lacked"--Lewis Nordan, author of "The Sharpshooter Blues"

"This riveting biography shines a hard light on the inscrutable Colonel . . . Dickerson has made it easy to understand that if rock and roll will never die, it owes its life to how Parker wrote the rules of the game"--Mark Ribowsky, author of "He's a Rebel"

James Stewart through the eyes of Donald Dewey
Author Donald Dewey deliveres a very detailed description of James Stewart, but the book is not pure-it has a spin. Particular events in Mr. Stewarts life are amplified and opinionated with the author's twist. After reading the first 2 chapters of this book, it is clear to see that we are seeing the life of James Stewart through the eyes of Donald Dewey.

A life-story competently told, but uninspired
The memory of Jimmy Stewart suffers not at all in this well-researched biography. A nice touch is the brief summary and review of each movie in which Stewart appeared over the course of his lifetime, and the impact, for better or worse, that each had on his career. However, the author's prose style is dry as toast and lacking in any humor whatsoever. What could have been an outstanding work is, in the end, only a competent treatment of his subject.

This book is thoroughly written and researched.
I have read many books about the life of Jimmy Stewart and found that this one is the most thorough and balanced. Mr. Dewey details Jimmy Stewart's life from all angles but never resorts to smarmy or tabloid-like tactics. While he does not sugar coat Stewart, he doesn't blast him either; he leaves the reader to draw his/her own conclusions. This is the book I would recommend to anyone who wished to find out as much as possible about one of the greatest actors and intriguing personalities of the 20th century.

The Official Parent's Sourcebook on McCune-Albright Syndrome
Published in Paperback by Icon grp int (2002)
Authors: James N. Parker and Icon Health Publications
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Sourcebook thin on details
I am a person with McCune Albright Syndrome (MAS) and I help run a support group of over 700 persons with variations of this disease. I was surprised and pleased to see there was a book on MAS. After reading the "Official Parent's Sourcebook on McCune-Albright Syndrome" I am somewhat disappointed. The 118 page book has probably less than a dozen pages with any substantive information on MAS. I know of the many questions parents have about MAS because I handle an average of 50 e-mails a week for our support group. This book would answer few of those questions. There is nothing about pain issues which are a major problem for people with MAS, the is no discussion about diagnosis, and there is no information about the special issues realting to MAS and fibrous dysplasia in the skull.

On a positive note the Sourcebook does give good information on how to use the internet as a means of searching for information on rare diseases such as MAS. I was glad to see there were references to the MAGIC Foundation and the Paget's Foundation web sites, both excellent sources of information.

Searching the internet for "fibrous dyspalsia" and "McCune Albright Syndrome" will bring much more substantive information.

Recommend for all the new patients!!!
Those, who are new to the disease and are interested in researching it further, will find this book extremely helpful. It is an excellent compilation of valuable sources.

The Official Patient's Sourcebook on Marfan Syndrome
Published in Paperback by ICON Health Publications (2002)
Authors: Icon Health Publications, James N. Parker, and Philip M. Parker
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Disappointing medical source book
Marfan Syndrome is a genetic disease with one fatal complication. Marfan patients can, and often do, die at any age from ruptured aortic aneurysms.

This source book spends far more time instructing the reader on a patient's legal rights with their health insurance company than it does on any discussion of the best methods available to diagnose aortic aneurysms. If a Marfan patient wants to know the differences between the various medical tests used to determine if aortic replacement surgery is necessary, they won't find it here. If they want to know which medical tests allow the doctor to view the entire aorta, not just the aortic root, they will have to find it in another book because it isn't covered here. There is absolutely no explanation of the benefits of an MRI versus a CT Scan or echocardiogram, nor are the actual symptoms experienced by patients when their aorta is about to burst and kill them ever discussed.

The book is written by a Medical Doctor who apparently expects Marfan patients to find a doctor and then place their total trust in that person, unencumbered by any knowledge to allow them to be sure they are receiving appropriate medical care. A patient suffering from any disease is much better equipped to battle it if they have as much knowledge as they can possibly obtain, which is why I purchased this book. I'm afraid I wasted my money, because this book provides very little substantive information about the diagnosis and treatment of aortic aneurysms in patients with Marfan Syndrome.

Ideal for new patients
I believe that anyone, who is new to Marfan Syndrome will find this directory extremely helpful. It guides you on how to find all kinds of information on Marfan.

The Official Patient's Sourcebook on Peyronie's Disease
Published in Paperback by Icon grp int (2002)
Authors: James N. Parker and Icon Health Publications
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Read the title carefully !!!
Purchasing this book underlined the need to read the title carefully. This is a "Sourcebook" as it claims, that is it contains very little infomation on the subject. What it does contain is lots of links to various internet sites that the reader can go to to research the topic.

I found little in the way of new web sites that I had not already reached by using well known web browsers/libary resources. Just one word of warning the book does direct you to genuine web sites, if you are searching on your own you get a lot of rubbish in with the real sites.

All the best with the research......

Extremely helpful guide
Anyone, who is new to Peyronie's Disease will appreciate this directory. It points you to a lot of good information.
I have found this extremely useful.

Simplified Design of Concrete Structures (Parker Ambrose Series of Simplified Design Guides)
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (1991)
Authors: Harry Parker and James E. Ambrose
Amazon base price: $59.95
Used price: $55.00
Average review score:

Simplified Design of Concrete Structures, 7th Ed.
This is a decent introduction to reinforced concrete design, but I do not like the way the material is presented. Ambrose has done a poor job in picking up Parker's work.

First and foremost, Ambrose does not appear to be a very good writer. The text is written in the first-person, which I find awkward and unprofessional for such a topic. There are numerous typograpical errors. The first six chapters of the book are largely qualitative and superficial discussions on concrete uses, production and so forth. Earnest problem solving doesn't start until Chapter 7.

Parker's 3rd Edition of Structural Steel design has been a trusted companion of mine for many years. The information is concise and the presentation robust without a lot of nonsense. I was hoping to get that same treatment out of Ambrose with this edition of concrete design. Ninety dollars later, I discovered that I have not.
