A joy to read
This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about Molly McIntire, a ten-year-old girl living on the home front during World War 2. When Molly is paired up with her friend Susan to do a report on George Washington, she believes that this will be the best report ever. However, when Susan starts moving the project in new directions, Molly begins to fear that the project will end in disaster. Molly believes that doing things in a different way is always bad, but perhaps different can be better!

My eleven-year-old daughter and I love these American Girls books, and this one is just as good as the others. The author succeeds in driving home her point with a gentleness that makes the story a joy to read, even while you are learning something. The final chapter has directions for making Cherry-Nut Cupcakes, which have little to do with the story, but my daughter enjoyed making them, and I enjoyed eating them. (Actually, as a father, I do hope that they keep up with putting recipes in their new books!)

A must read for the true story of Mount Vernon
This book was very informative. I learned the "behind the scenes" of the great historic preservation movement in action. The book was very in depth and very easy to read!

good, but only covers common species. no keys to genus/sp
Good photographs, but these alone are not adequate to allow identification of many of the species described. Since most distinguishing characteristics of related species are described in terms of "less than" or "more than" the species photographed, and since you often can't see those characters in the photograph, it is often difficult to use this field guide to distinguish between related species. The key is only to the family level

Good analysis of Pres. Washington's Farewell Address
Easily the finest president this nation has ever had (especially in light of the scumbag currently inhabiting that high office), and easily one of th e most enlightened and moral men at the time of the founding of the United States of America.

The authors not only do an excellent job of reviewing the background of Washington's farewell address, but they give interesting insight into the background and morality of President Washington. Well worth the money.

A tale for out times
You may find the prose a little bit too much like a Bible story, and the black and white moral clarity a little out of kilter with our present-day tendency to equivalency and pandering. But this book hits the mark in its ability to depict a great man triumphing after going through some really tough times. George Washinginton is the man, and the time is the summer and fall of 1776 - not a good stretch for the Revolution. Mr. Fast gives us an inside look at what Washington might have been thinking as he literally drags his army in retreat from one disaster after another, from Brooklyn Heights, to Manhattan, to New Jersey - with the British army and Hessian mercenaries breathing down his neck, soldiers deserting on a grand scale, fellow generals looking for ways to stab him in the back, and all the while not getting much support from the Continental Congress. The truthfulness of the portrait is striking, we see Washington is not necessarily the demi-God we have grown up to believe in, but a simple man with the weight of the world on his shoulders, grasping for a way out, as he watches his army disintegrating like "grains of sand falling through his hands." Fast also gives us facinating insights into characters, such as Nathan Hale, Gen. Henry Knox, Alexander Hamilton, and others. Mr. Fast wrote this historical novel in the early dark days of WWII to rally his countryman by illustrating that tough times weren't new to America. If you think you're having a bad day, or that you live in tough times, or that America is in a jam it can't get out of, this book is a jolt and a tonic. Washington retreated, but believed he would ultimately win. As the British, Japanese, and Germans learned - don't ever count us out.

Interesting, but I wish the author wrote more.
After returning from the past, Dixie and Danny find out that their sick brother is still really sick and then they needed more money for the special treatment. They again turn for help to their uncles and are asked to go back into the past again. At first they are really mad at that request, until their uncles admit that Danny and Dixie's father had gone into the past and that that was why he had disappeared. The twins quickly agree to go, anxious to find their father. They travel back into the time of the French and Indian War and meets George Washington.

The story was interesting and fun, but the ending was really, really lame. You'd think the author had written another book continuing the "Time Navigators", but he didn't, so it was really sort of frustrating.

GOOD BOOK> VERYEDUCATIONAL
This book of "Washington and his Comrades in Arms" shows how he helped shape the U.S. and what accompishments he made for us. He was recruited by the Continental Congress for command of the army. He fought many difficult battles to to determine the outcome of the war. Many opposing forces stood in his way, for example, General Cornwallis and his gigantic battlaion. The knowledge and strength of Washington helped him defeat lots of obstacles and further him and his army to more victories. His strong leadership helped him win one of the most significant battles in history, the battle at Yorktown. Coming back to Philadelphia, many citizens cheered Washington winning all he could. This book is a great way to learn much about the life of Washington in the army.

Learning about George Washington and his birthday holiday
In this juvenile biography for younger elementary students, Clyde Robert Bulla tells the "heroic and spirited story" of George Washington from his early childhood in Virginia, his army leadership during both the French & Indian as well as Revolutionary wars, and his terms of office as the first President of the United States. Young readers will learn how people all over the world have celebrated Washington's birthday throughout the years and how his birthday became a national holiday. Obviously, since Bulla wrote about "Washington's Birthday" in 1967, this was before Presidents' day effectively combined the February birthdays of Washington and Lincoln. Don Bolognese provides the illustrations for this book, which is part of the Crowell Holiday Book series. Young readers will find basic information about both George Washington and the holiday celebrating his birthday.
