Echoes from the Hills: A Defined Guide to Country Sayings by Roland Lee Netzer is an fun and informative guide which is packed cover to cover with colorful country phrases and their practical definitions. From "A difference of opinion is what makes horse races" meaning "let's see who has the best idea by putting them to a test" to "Your mouth doesn't run on shutters, it runs on biscuit cutters," meaning "shut up and eat; you talk too much", Echoes from the Hills is an extraordinary guide to rural sayings and language which is especially recommended reading for "city folk" who need a brush-up on country lingo, as well as writers looking for an extra dash of zest or authenticity to add a rural dialogue.
Entertaining and Interesting
I, being from the Ozarks, found "Echoes From the Hills" hitting really close to home. You flip through the book seeing phrases you've heard all your life, not even thinking about what they mean! Although it's not a book that you sit down and read from front to cover, it's interesting to think about some phrases you've heard lately and look them up. I think it's an excellent book that's very well researched and broken down. Definitely on my Good Book List!

great way to eat healthy
i recently went vegetarian and this book has saved me. i never realized vegetables were so wonderful and that legumes were so nutritious. i never need to eat meat agian. i feel so healthy.

A Wonderful Find for Dieters
I love this book, and I am going to continue to buy it every time I run through one. This is a great way to keep a food diary without a paper trail. I am now buying for my friends also. I have already lost 5 lbs.

Tasty low fat meals
All of the recipes I've tried from this book have been delicious and healthy. My 3-1/2 year old likes them too.
Two thumbs up from two soup lovers
Great recipes with great taste. If you want low-fat soups and stews that taste like restaurant made, this is the cookbook for you.

No matter how much I praise this book, I can not give it enough credit. I am in a low fat soup club at work, and my collegues raved over all the soups I have made. I am very fat and this book has helped me to lose 200 pounds!!!

Not enough space
This is usually the only dieting journal I ever see at bookstores, which is too bad because I really don't think it provides enough space to use it effectively. I can barely squeeze in what I ate if I write small, but I also like space for writing calories and fat grams, any exercise I did for the day, and anything extra that I might want to remember relating to my diet. I'm ordering the Dietminder, which according to the reviews is much nicer.
Lose weight -- easily
This is an easy and inexpensive way to lose weight. If you use this book and hold yourself accountable for what you eat, you will lose weight quickly.
My new best friend
This handy little journal goes everywhere with me. It's like having a dieting buddy 24 hours a day. As the other reviewers have stated, the book has 16 weeks of 1 page journals with a page at the end of each week for review and goal setting. I love this book as it is, but if I were to make any changes, it would be to perhaps go with an 8 week book and have more room for comments about the weight-loss journey. I do this in a larger journal, but it would be nice to keep it all in one place. I bought two of these because I'm afraid it's going to take me a little longer than 16 weeks to get where I'm going.

A VALUABLE TOOL FOR MY HEALTH NEEDS.
I WAS RECENTLY HOSPITALIZED WITH DIVERTICULITIS. MY DR. ADVISED ME TO GET ON THE HIGH FIBER BAND WAGON. I DIDN'T REALIZE HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO GET THE RECOMMENDED AMOUNT OF DAILY FIBER. THIS BOOK LISTS FOODS I HAVE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF AND I FEEL IT IS VERY COMPLETE. GRANTED THE FIBER IS NOT DIVIDED AS TO THE KIND BUT.... MY DR. SAID JUST USE THE TOTAL AND TRY AND GET 25-30 GRAMS A DAY AND YOU WILL BE FINE. I WAS QUITE SURPRISED AS I THOUGHT MY DAILY LUNCHEON OF TOSSED SALAD WAS WONDERFUL. GUESS WHAT ICEBERG LETTUCE IS SO LOW IN FIBER THAT IT IS NOT MUCH BETTER THAN A SLICE OF BREAD. OH DEAR. HOPE THIS HELPS MANY OF YOU.
Good compilation, but does not specify fiber catagories.
Overall, this book provides a good reference that you can use to plan your fiber intake. However, I believe the compilation is incomplete. The intro specifies the two fiber categories as water soluable and insoluable but none of the actual values are broken out into one of these two categories. The values are only listed as dietary or crude. We have to make an assumption that dietary fiber is a combination of both fiber categories. Bottom line, you are unable to determine how much soluable fiber you are consuming.

A good start on low-fat
As the title of the book says there are 100 low-fat recipes. I liked the emphasis on small meals and salads. As a single person it is hard to find recipes for small quanities. Afterall, I don't want to eat the same item an entire week. Though I tend to avoid recipes with eggplant and mushrooms I had no problem finding new things to try. The directions are simple and easy to follow.

Indispensable resource. Wouldn't want to be without it.
Together with a calculator, this book is indispensable in monitoring one's intake of the major macronutrients, etc. I first heard of it at the website of Dr. C. Everett Koop after learning how many grams of protein, carbohydrates, fat and fiber I should have every day for my age, height, sex, frame size and activity level, and I am glad that I was able to find it on this website and buy it. Despite the fact that under Fat only the Total number of grams of fat for each food item is listed rather than this as well as the number of grams of saturated (bad--cholesterol-raising) and unsaturated fat which is information I need from time to time, it gets five stars because it is so comprehensive and well organized. Not only does it list many unprocessed foods, but also many packaged and processed foods as well as fast foods, and its size and format enable the reader to find out what he need to know quickly and easily (and just about anywhere that he happens to be). Because I had had high cholesterol and need to watch my intake of saturated fat as well as total fat, I did buy another book here which does provide that information, The Food Bible by Judith Wills which I also recommend if you can buy two on this subject. However, I wouldn't want to be without this one especially since it is so complete and includes such a wide variety of foods in such a user friendly manner. It is been especially helpful to me in keeping my weight under control ( I am female, 5' 3 1/2" tall and I am just plain unhappy if I weigh more than a pound or two more than 107--which, with this book at hand, does not happen--it is NOT always necessary to count every calorie-just getting an idea of the number of calories in the foods that one eats on a daily basis can help one to exercise enough portion control so that problems don't arise in the first place. This book is the best resouce that I have for that). Highly recommended for implementing a healthy, balanced diet!

Corinne Netzer's COMPLETE BOOK OF FOOD COUNTS delivers even more than it promises, in a very handy 4" wide by 7" tall by 1-3/4" thick size that is easy to carry along to work, restaurants, and shopping.
This book has at least 10,000 name brands, restaurant foods, and basic foods in it and includes calories, carbohydrates, protein, sodium, cholesterol, fat and fiber for each food. Netzer has managed to pack it all into an easy-to-read and easy-to-use format. PHENOMENAL!
This one is definitely a keeper and the best I've found!
I bought three other references (one that was supposedly a fat counter, another an all-in-one refernce and the other a cholesteral guide) at the same time I bought Corinne T. Netzer's COMPLETE BOOK OF FOOD COUNTS. If I had gotten Netzer's book first, I could have saved a lot of money because I didn't need to buy the others. Not only is Netzer's book complete and more comprehensive than the others, it is less expensive than any of the others, too!
Since this is such a useful book, it would make a great gift for anyone on your list. They needn't be on a diet or be a "health nut" to be happy to have an up-to-date and useful reference!
Sound, well researched information
I am a physician in private practice, and I subspecialize in bariatrics (weight management). All of my patients are given a copy of this wonderful reference when they begin my program, and it has proved to be extremely helpful.

Excellent resource!
After browsing several 'counter' books, I happened across this one, and I was sold. 500 pages of nothing but carb counts--an absolute MUST for anyone on the Atkin's or Zone carb diets. Broken down by brand in almost unbelieveable detail--there's something like 15 entries for refried beans! And are you having pizza at Pizza Hut? Dominos? and is it sausage? pepperoni? Each one laid out in exact detail. I *highly* recommend this book
Can't Be Without It
I just received 3 gift books from my husband - this was one of them - excellent! Every bulk food & product I was wondering about was listed in this book, which I now carry in my brief case for shopping & restaurant eating. I recently discovered, through a wonderful Naturopathic Doctor that I do indeed have Chronic Candidiasis & as such need to keep my carb count to under 50 gms while on the recovery. My blood type (O) also suggests a high protein / low carb food regimen for healthy living & this book tells me everything about the carbs in the food I eat and don't eat. I though I knew food pretty well but after going through this book about 10 times it seems I didn't know my food so well after all - but that is changing rapidly. This is a worthwhile investment for anyone watching carbs!

This book is amazing. With all the rave being "LOW CARB" this and "LOW CARB" that these days, this book was just what I needed to understand carbs better and to begin a new life of low carb eating. The book is simple to understand as well, not like the nutrition textbooks we had back when I was in high school. I give it an A+++++++!!

The first page has space for you to record your goals including, current and desired weight, measurements, and current and desired exercise.
Then the book begins with Day 1 where you will find spaces to include the date, your weight and general comments. Each meal is listed in order of breakfast, lunch, dinner and then snacks.
Next to where you record what you ate there is a space to fill in the carbs.
At the end of each week there is a progress report where you can fill in your accomplishments and goals for the following week.
The journal covers 16 full weeks so its easy to look back and see the progress or mis-steps you have made. And the spiral bound journal lays flat, so it's easy to write in.
The back of the journal includes a list of common foods and their carb counts.
Though the journal is a bit large for smaller pocketbooks (8"tall by 4" wide), it will fit in a larger bag or a briefcase easily.
Another nice touch are the little hints and tips that appear on some of the pages, to help you make your low carbohydrate diet a success. Sample tip, " When you want a snack reach for tasty low-carb cheese. Wrap up some slices of your favorite kind and bring them along to the movies in place of popcorn."
The book is a super nice tool to help you track your progress!
