Stories, observations, biographical portraits, customs, etc.
From the Heart of the Crow Country is a unique book by Joseph Medicine Crow, oral historian of the tribe. Filled with stories, observations, biographical portraits, accounts of hunting, warring and religious practices, and even examples of Crow Indian humour, From the Heart of Crow Country is a valuable compilation enriched by many black and white historic photos of Crow Indians, including the author's own parents and family. Convincing cultural and religious parallels are drawn such as between Jesus' fasting for 40 days and a Sun Dancer's fasting for 4 days. In this vein a good definition is given of a holy man: "This special person is the product of three factors coming into conjunction: First is the event or situation at hand; second is a man with capability and intelligence; and third is this man's definition of the situation, which leads to the solution's becoming a reality. The result of the successful conjunction of these three factors is the emergence of a new leader, who brings about the final release of the people from their predicament (p.55)." A chronology of Crow history is included that highlights major events of Absarokee History from ca.1500 to 1962. From The Heart Of The Crow Country is a fully authentic work that has value and appeal to both scholars and general readers, elegantly voiced, and easily read.

An incredible traditional tale with Caldecott like pictures.
This traditional Native American tale, retold by Josheph Bruchac, a hearalded Native American author and story teller, is a moral story with the theme of living for others and good things come to those who wait. Christine Nyburg Shrader's illustrations are incredible. They capture a true Native American spirit and complement Joseph Bruchac's interpretation perfectley. The book is invaluable in a classroom setting, especialy for younger grades (1-4). The story gives great insight into Native American culture and may clarify some misunderstaindings. It allows children the opportunity to think criticaly as well as teaching them a great lesson. The story should be in every classroom.

One of the best, if not the best children's book I have ever read. Its an excellent text to help young people realize that no matter who they are, they have a place and a role to play in this world. I loved it.

Captured the imaginations of the western world then and now
Collaboratively written by W. Raymond Wood (Professor of Anthropology, University of Missouri-Columbia), Joseph C. Porter (Chief Curator, North Carolina Museum of History), and David C. Hunt (Director, Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas), and enhanced with numerous black-and-white illustrations and studio art reproductions, Karl Bodmer's Studio Art is a truly captivating collection of images and an informative, scholarly study of the works of Karl Bodmer, a Swiss artist whom Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied selected for an 1833-34 expedition up the Missouri River. Bodmer sketched and painted landscapes and Native American portraits which uniquely captured the imaginations of the western world then and now. Enthusiastically recommended for academic and community library Art History and American History reference collections, Karl Bodmer's Studio Art focuses more on the story of Bodmer's journey than the art itself, yet both the text and the illustrations have a timeless appeal.

Bringing Native Stories to Life
I've been lucky enough to see Michael Caduto perform theseNative stories in person. He brings Native beliefs to life inunexpected and delightful ways. The stories he and Josheph Bruchac have put together here do the same thing. They give young readers a chance to explore Native cultures while they learn and enjoy the stories! In addition to Native tales, this book provides factual information and activities on nature and animals. It's an outstanding resource for teachers, parents, and kids of all ages.

An Excellent Travel Companion
This guidebook by the Lonely Planet was an excellent companion on my recent trip to India. The information was up-to-date and informative, yet never too wordy or boring. The "text-box" inserts were very entertaining while at the same time useful.

This guide is perfect for those traveling on a budget or those who want to take a "first-class" trip across northern India.

The maps in the book are very useful, as is the information about how not to get ripped off as a tourist. Highly recommended to everyone (of Indian origin or not) if you are contemplating a trip to India.

Wonderful for children, beautifully illustrated.
I picked up this book for my son and I found that I enjoyed as much as he did. It really does give a nice overview of Native Americans and the Illustrations are superb. I think it is a great book for children and adults alike. Not only is it entertaining but it also teaches. If you are looking for a book for a child from 2 to 10 years old this is the one to buy.

"Must Read" for Health Professionals/Bioterrorism Planners
This book is a "must read" for health professionals and planners respnsible for bioterrorism preparedness. The book is the most comprehensive, thorough source of information to date on the varied aspects of planning for and responding to bioterrorism.

The book begins with a historical overview of the use of biological weapons. The next two chapters, respectively, provide detailed information on the biological agents that the CDC considers to be the most dangerous and likely to be weaponized (Category "A" agents), followed by Category "B" and "C" agents - agents which have the potential to be used as weapons. These chapters include terrific consolidated tables that provide a ready reference and overview of pertinent information on each of the biological agents.

The next two chapters are two of the most important in the book for health professionals and bioterrorism planners. First, the book provides an overview of the CDC's Laboratory Response Network and the most important laboratory tests and procedures for identifying biological agents. Once again the book provides consolidated tables that provide quick reference to the tests and clinical specimens required for each agent. Then the book provides a 10 step approach to identifying a biological attack by modifying the Advanced Trauma Life Support model familiar to emergency health care providers (i.e. Primary and Secondary Surveys). This "tool" can easily be adopted into medical bioterrorism plans and procedures.

The book also provides an epidemiological approach to performing triage in a mass casualty, large-scale bioterroism event based on the PICE (Potential Injury/illness Creating Event)stages by expanding the "SIR" model (Susceptible, Infected, Infective, Removal) to include "Exposed" and "Vaccinated Succesfully" populations. This chapter includes an excellent graphic that summarizes this "SEIRV" methodology.

A chapter on creating a basic bioterrosim incident management plan for hospitals outlines the critical issues that the plan must address, as well as some potential solutions to a few of the more difficult bioterrorism management problems.

The book also addresses an area for which there has been little information previously - vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant women, the elderly and immuno-compromised patients. Once again, two consolidated tables provide excellent ready reference for anibiotic therapy for pregnant women and children.

In addition, the book covers mental health issues, state and federal bioterrorism related programs, and future bioterrorism challenges and provides a community perspective on identifying and responding to a bioterrorism event.

Fantastic book for teachers, parents and kids!
An excellent reference for teachers and parents alike, this book contains Native legends related to gardening as well as projects based on the tales, gardening tips, helpful suggestions for beginners, recipes to use your garden's new- found bounty, and much more!
Joseph Bruchac is a very well-known storyteller in the Native American community. Along with his various co-authors in his different books, he combines storytelling with various teaching and family-based activities. I collect his books, because they are both a great reference for Native American mythology and belief, but also because my daughter and I can then turn around and learn together about the great past of the United States.
