An Extraordiny Book About Racism
I lived in Greensboro, NC when the the events in this book took place. Ms. Wheaton has done a remarkable job of research, in addition to naming names and defining the racist nature of the actions and the cover up. So sadly, it was no surprise that these events took place in my former city. It was also no surprise that the collaboration between the police/Klan/lawyers/
city officials convinced the 'jury' that the so-called officials had acted properly. In this year it perhaps becomes a more important read than when it was first published.

Hovel in the hills : an account of "the simple life"

A great account of getting back to the land
For anyone who has wanted to "get away from it all" this a book that will both make you drool and think twice. I have read an earlier edition of this work (from the 1970s), and cannot comment on any additions that the author has made, as I can imagine that she would have to add some notes to make dated references more comprehensible.

Anyway, this book chronicles the trials and experiences of the author and her husband after they abandoned "modern" life and headed for the hills of North Wales. Their friends, of course, thought they were nuts, but they kept at it, and after years of setbacks, finally began to eek out a living.

West's writing is smooth and vibrant and she really manages to capture the essence of the failures and successes that they endured. The book is a real page turner, and is one of those that one wishes was at least twice or three-times as long.

Wonderful Book. Makes a Great Gift!!
Elaine Lindgren has done an excellent job researching a little known subject. She gives not only a very fine introduction to the subject of homesteading, she provides a wonderful written documentary of the phenomenon of single women who homesteaded in North Dakota. This book is not only wonderfully written (it is actually a page turner), it also leaves the reader enthralled with a whole area of American history which had previously gone undocumented. I truly enjoyed this book and have given copies to friends who tell me they found it just as interesting

Excellent description and understanding
Anthropologist Elisabeth Tooker has provided here an excellent understanding of Native North American spirituality with this book. Most of the focus is on the southeastern areas of the continent, but that does not manage to detract from the book's ability to convey understanding of what went on in traditional Native American life.

The language is very easy to read and logical, making this very good reading fo a beginner. Indeed, there is almost no technical terminology in thw whole book.

The early part of Tooker's book is devoted to a study of the cosmological viewpoint of the various tribes mentioned in the book. The book shows very clearly how, from the perspective of the Native American tribes, and how myth describe events in the "sky world" ie. the world above Earth. The Winnebago tribe do not base the existence of spirits on sight and hearing, but in terms of what is felt.

The last two-thirds of "Native North American Spirituality Of The Eastern Woodlands" deals with actual Native American rituals. In very clear language, stages of long ritual are described in a way that even a novice on this subject will always be able to understand. At the same time, the rituals are explained very well, with purpose of even such actions as the sluaghtering of deer being well-explained. There is a particularly moving description of what a Winnebago father will teach his child how to reach their "destination" on a spiritual quest via fasting and helping one's fellow men. There are also accounts of offerings of tobacco and other drugs.

On the whole, this work should be read by all interested in Native American spirituality, especially if you have little knowledge.

The most helpful book!
I needed to do some research on Minneapolis/St. Paul since I am relocating there this spring. I have bought several books on the subject and this one is by far the most helpful book ever! The others had general overviews, but this book goes into detail! It has everything in there that anyone moving to the area could possibly need: finding a city to live in and descriptions of each, opening a bank account, finding a realtor in the area, and tips on just about everything you will need to move to the area. If I had bought this book first, I could have saved so much money by not buying the others. This is the only book I really needed! This is a great book!

NC Southerners meander back through touching, funny memories
Elizabeth Pearsall's writing style is a joy. Some of her memories are my memories. Places in my heart I was fortunate to return to through her mind's eye.(I was born in Lenior County. Daddy and Grandaddies all tobacco farmers)

A darling woman for writing it. Details abound deliciously. Thank you, Elizabeth!

A Must-Have for Travel to the Middle East and N. Africa!
This book is essential for travel or living in this region! It is comprehensive and very easy to read! The author does a fantastic job of covering all pertinent areas of interest, such as: empoloyment, social functions, interpersonal relationships, local customs, vocabulary, etc., etc. I have read many travel/preparation books for living, or just visiting this area, and I found this book to be an vital part of my "Travel" collection. It is also a fascinating read for anyone generally interested in this region's culture. It's small enough to be portable on a trip and pretty enough to sit on your coffee table. Don't let this one pass you by! You won't be disappointed!
