Nature Hide and Seek - Jungles

Fascinating and educational at the same time.
This terrific book features drawings and thumbnail descriptions of a wide variety of jungle denizens from insects to large mammals. Then on succeeding pages are drawings of the jungle habitat with the same animals hidden in various degrees. Searching out these naturally camoflaged critters kept my grand-daughter entertained for hours and we both learned a lot about the lives of these exotic species.

Well written but the title is misleading.
I liked the book for what it did cover but, when the title includes "ATM, IP, Frame Relay, and SMDS explained" I expected the authors to give more than a 50,000 foot overview. The book fell horribly short of the mark especially with respect to IP. IP wasn't even mentioned more than six times in the whole text. If you are looking for an overview of networking technologies this book is "ok" but , if you are looking for a book that explains the technoligies listed in the title this is not it!

Any Info On WAE & ATM Here?
Nice & basic, but needs to expand on WAE as it relates to ATM. The evolution of the net will use hodge-podge connections, but there is little doubt that consumers are pushing for "roving" wireless net connections -- which I think will still use ATM @ some "point". The question is, is that ATM point going to grow as a result of consumer mobility? Anyone know of another book (or info) on how to view this from a different viewpoint?

Everzthing you wanted to know about network technology
The book has three main sections. One explains network technologies like IP and ATM. The next tells you where they fit into the real world and the third illustrates it.

The style is really nice. It is easy to read, even when some difficult things are being explained. There is plenty of good advice and sharp observation throughout.

Overall, it is a good read and a useful book to have close by. I work with a lot of telecomms people and it has done a lot for my credibility.

Little To Offer
This book, written by Chuck Norris in 1975, the year he retire from sport karate competition, has very little to offer the karate student. The book doesn't have much material in written information, but instead, relies on still photography to teach the karate student certian sport karate techniques, such as entry techniques and striking drills. Overall, the book is a very weak presentation on point fighting.

I highly admire Chuck Norris and if one would rather read books authored by him they should read "The Secret Power Within" or his autobiography. These books are informative and at times, insightful. If someone is looking for a good book on sport karate and how to improve their sparring skills, I highly recommend the superior book "American Freestyle Karate" by Dan Anderson.

Good for what it offers
Martial arts books have come along ways since Chuck Norris penned this book in the mid 1970s. Nonetheless, there are still some good things in it that can motivate the reader to seek out more on the subject.

For example, there is Norris's red-line drill, which is still an excellent training method to push the karateka beyond what he thought was his top speed. He also touches briefly on mental imagery, which is arguably one of the top training methods used today by top athletes in virtually every sport. Lastly, Norris illustrates, with plenty of pictures, his concept of blitzing, that is, charging straight in and launching a hand or foot technique every half step or so.

This is still a good book worthy to be in every fighter's library.

THE BEST
I have read many karate, kung fu, and martial arts books. Most of them have been okay, but this book is the best one of them all. It tells you step-by-step on how to preform techniques. This is an excellent book for the intermediate and advanced students. I recomend it to anyone.

A Book of Little Value
It would be a disquieting statement, and not entirely accurate, were I to say that I liked nuclear war. However, I find the subject fascinating. After all, the technology for fighting wars has been increasing since the 1940s, with staggering implications, but many of the new technologies remain unused and poorly understood. While I'm not in a rush to see nuclear, biological and chemical warfare unleashed on our world, I would like to get a better grasp on the past, present, and future state of the technology.

This book did nearly nothing to help me toward that goal.

"NBC: Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare on the Modern Battlefield" is, more than anything, a brief sketch of some of the NBC equipment that has been developed over the years. Even as this, the list is meager and lot particularly useful. The effects of various weapons, germs and chemicals are described in extremely vague and simple terms, and so much is left out that a clear picture can hardly be drawn from the included data. This isn't an issue, though; the book doesn't even try to explain how NBC weaponry might be used on the modern battlefield. It's up to the reader to take in the data and figure out applications for himself. Even doing that is complicated by the fact that the book's organization is loose and confusing.

Interesting but flawed
Equipment is covered in more detail than in the comparable books which focus on agents. The historical details are interesting. There are omissions and errors beyond the previously mentioned errors on equipment. For example, the boxed summary of anthrax lists its effect as "blackening of skin with malignant pustules", when the most immediate and dangerous presentation in an WMD (weapons of mass destruction) event will be pulmonary anthrax (e.g. Medical Management of Biological Casualties Handbook, US Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases). At times it is simplistic, at other times incorrect, or sometimes both as in the following description of the effect of VX: "[The victim's] nervous systems and heart, lungs and brain functions shut down, causing the body to cease functioning." Effects on the heart are not noted as important by other sources (e.g. The Medical Management of Chemical Casualties Handbook, Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense, or Textbook of Military Medicine: Medical Aspects of Chemical and Biological Warfare Borden Institute, Walter Reed Army Medical Center). To say that "Brain functions shut down" may be a little simplistic for those interested in detail. The price seems a lot for a 111-page book with black and white photos, scanned-in tables and a number of errors.

Picture in the book
I am lived in Hong Kong, and would like to advise that I cannot be know how many picture in the book. (Just on the content or search in computer) Thanks

Horrible! Nothing like the real test!
I studied out of 7 different preparation books, and this one, by far is the worst one! The questions in this book are really difficult, tricky and unlike the CLEP exam! The questions in the actual CLEP exam arent tricky like the SAT or GRE, they are straightforward. For some reason, Peterson's has decided to put in SAT-like questions on their practice exam. This book should be thrown out of the market because its NOTHING like the real exams! I would recommend Princeton Review's Cracking the CLEP, and Review for Clep Examination by Comex Systems. The REA also writes really accurate practice exams. If you are taking English, I also recommend you purchase "The Writer's Reference" by Diana Hacker. That was probably the most helpful book in brushing up on your English.

CLEP
I found the practice exercises in this book to be very helpful, and I did really well when I took the CLEP afterwards.

Just like all other Petersons books... excellent quality....
Looking to maximize my ability on the CLEP tests to avoid taking numerous classes that I have no interest in. If you'd like to get practice on these tests, than this book may help.

Not for the beginner.
I used this text book when I was a student and found it confusing because it often skipped steps and used short-cuts in analysis. Simple, straight-forward, explainations are best for the beginning engineering student. This was not a good beginner's book. On the positive side, it may be a good reference book for the experienced civil engineer.

A Modernist's Opinion of Frank Norris
If one is looking for an honest, unbiased biography of the great fundamental preacher Frank Norris, as I was, this is not the book to purchase. It is just a waste of your time and money. The author quickly identifies himself as a modernist and a hater of Biblical fundamentalism by his comments regarding Frank Norris. The further I got into the book the worse it got. His attack on Frank Norris is bad enough, but his misinterpretation of fundamentalism and the Bible just go too far. The author is, of course, entitled to be a modernist and not to believe that the King James Bible is the inerrant Word of God, but should not disguise his opinions in the title of the book. This book makes me have second thoughts about purchasing any more books over the internet.

Gives you the basics
This book was good in giving you the basics facts of Norris' life, but it left me wanting a more in depth biography along the lines of the one of Jimmy Swaggart done a few years ago. If you want to know the highlights, and low lights read this but if you can just check it out of the library.

Fishing Beyond the Buoys: Salmon Trolling

Deceptive! Not what it appears!
This book has little, if anything, helpful to say about fishing techniques for the sports fisherman, as stated. Rather, it is primarily a compilation of one man's autobiography as a troller and his many sea stories. I was very, very disappointed. Paid way too much for the book as it was on a "not-currently-avialable-status." I can see now why it is no longer in print!

Bad Writing and Bad History
I can't recall ever reading a historical book as badly written as this one. The prose is choppy, often jumping between unrelated topics within the same paragraph. The analysis is incoherent or nonexistent. The author treats early history simply by recounting facts without any attempt to explore their meaning. His modern history is even worse: a litany of complaints about how crime, pollution, and ethnic conflict have made the city unbearable. It reads like a cross between an elementary school report and the stereotypes of someone who has never lived in Los Angeles.

Whether you love or hate it, Los Angeles is a tremendously diverse, complex city - in its culture, economy, politics, and geography. I hoped to read an account that would take a well-rounded, sophisticated look at the city, but was utterly disappointed.
