I felt this book was an excellent source of reading for the Basset show dog owners. I, myself am not into showing, I enjoy the breed as pets so I was a little disappointed in finding so much reading dedicated solely to showing. I enjoy reading about bassets and would of been more interested in stories, complications this breed can accure as well as how to prevent them or deal with them. I enjoyed the many photos included but once again, the majority were dogs being shown. In my own personal opinion, the book should of been more detailed either in title or on front cover explaining its contents more so. I am on to other reading and am hoping to find less of show dogs

"The Basset Hound" is an excellent book to add to any true fan of the breeds library collection. The pictures are excellent, showing the beauty and variety of the breed in bone structure and coat color. The historical content details the breeds use in hunting and dog showing, and a brief mention of the breed as a pet. I was very captivated by the pictures, and the information presented was very interesting. For owners of the breed there is even a chapter on traveling with your basset hound for todays busy lifestyles. This is a wonderful breed book.

Ms. Nicholas has done quite a nice job for someone who has not actually lived with a Shar-pei. But that also explains the limitations of the book. One must actually have spent days and nights with one to fully begin to understand exactly what they are like - their unique personality - their intelligence - their playfulness - their dedication to their owners and their one of a kind relationship with humans. I love the breed and did not see that same love in the book. Decent information ( somewhat outdated ) I give it 3 stars.

This book is OK, as far as Poodle books go, but it is part of a large chain of dog books. This chain has a habit of using breed -related information in the first few chapters, then switching over to a generic, all-breed dog care information manual for the rest of the book. This doesn't mean that it is not a good book, but I prefer to read more specific information about the breed the book supposedly is about. One thing that I liked about this book were its colorful pictures, but I would recommend that the reader spend his or her money on a more exclusively "Poodle" book.

While the first quarter of the book has nice pictures of Weimaraners and some (basic!) basics about the breed, for the most part the book is a template of a basic "how to raise a dog" book, without too many specifics related to Wiemaraners. You might be better off buying a Wegman book for nice Wiemaraner pictures and a basic dog training book instead!

Nothing the average 12yr.old or petshop "expert" doesnt already know. Very very basic stuff.

This book not only touches on the history,care and socialization importance of owning an AmStaff but shows some great pictures of AmStaffs in day to day activities. This book is one that should be used as a beginning tool when deciding if this might be the breed for you and the basics for responsible ownership

This book is basically one in a series, there are many just like it that focus on other breeds, and they all pretty much have the same text and pictures. They only devote a small percentage of the book to the specifics of the breed on the cover, the rest is general information that applies to almost all dogs such as health/dental care, breeding, training et c, all of which is generally useful, but if you want more specific detail and information on the coonhound, you won't find much here.

I was disappointed in this book. I wanted information that educated me on this particular breed's traits. Such as typical traits, behaviors and helpful raising tips. This book mostly contain information about dogs in general.

I was very disappointed with this book. So much could have and should have been included, but 3/4 of the publication is taken up by general medical non-information. The breed is a favorite of mine and Anna Katherine Nicholas is a wonderful author, but this book deserves it's very low rating. It's too bad.

This book is very general with lots of pictures and pushing specific pet products. This isn't the in depth book I was hoping for but after looking in various bookstores and pet shops I was desperate. There is some useful information in the book but I'm still looking for more complete information.

I purchased this book wanting information regarding french bulldogs prior to getting a new pet. After meeting with breeders and reading information from them, this book is in no way adequate in informing potential owners of this rare breed. It also cost me a lot more than $4.99, try Australian $29.00, money not well spent.The book is mostly regarding dog care which can be obtained in vast quantities from other sources.

This book has a few pages on French bulldogs and then is filled with generic dog information...some of which is actually incorrect for Frechies. Save the money...this book isn't worth it.

I was disappointed in this book when finding out that only about the first 1/4 actually contained info specific to French bulldogs; the rest was just generic dog info and worse yet, seemed to be a 'plug' for a brand of dog chew toys. It reeked of being a "dog book" template -- switching out the breed info on a few pages, adding a new cover, some photos, and voila! The reinforced binding may be sturdy, but it makes it very hard to hold or keep open. Best aspects were some adorable Frenchie photos, but even those were outnumbered by cartoonish drawings and photos of other breeds! Sacre bleu!
