Beautiful 'coffee table' book
This beautiful 'coffee table' book contains all the information essential to the golden owner, including a detailed history of the breed throughout the world, invaluable advice on every topic from breeding, selection and care of the puppy through conformation, obedience, grooming, and veterinary care. Also includes discussion of the most influential breeding kennels.
The Book of the Golden Retriever
We are breeders. Loved the detailed history of the breed including info on the All-Time Great Dogs!
Covers every aspect of the Golden, extremely informational.
Between all the books we've read about Golden's, The Book Of The Golden Retriever was more informative ,(in all areas), than all the other books combined. We purchased the book prior to buying our new golden puppy. The information on their characteristics could not have been any more " right on the money". It helped us purchase the perfect, loving dog. We also found relatives of hers in the book along with the kennels they originated. It was absolutely terrific being able to locate her ancestors and read when and how they became... Show Dogs.. Champions...Best Of Breed...etc. I recomend this book to anyone who is in hope of purchasing a Golden...You'll be happy you did!!!

It was a really cool book!!
I don't exactly know what top do. i like springer spaniels
A Very Thorogh Book
Ms. Nicholas privides a huge volume of information with wonderful photographs, and chapters on the many aspects of owning and raising English Springer Spaniels. It is the only book I have read to date which offers any information on rage (whose presence many breeders either dispel or aren't aware of). Other topics include a description of the breed and standards; AKC events to participate in with your dog; choosing a pet; careful consideration before breeding; the responsibilities and work involved in being a careful breeder; the proper training and grooming of the breed; health issues; many submissions from kennels across the country describing their background and purpose; pedigrees of many different kennels' great dogs; several sections of gorgeous color, as well as black and white photos of springers in various events and at home. This book was an inspiration to me, and was the first place I found color photographs of tricolor springers. This is a magnificent and very thorough book. It is a large format, with good typesetting and well designed. It is a coffee table book to keep nearby for entertainment as well as reference.

Great book, an enormous sheltie family tree.
I found a copy of this book at a pet store for 2.50!!!! It is worth much more than that however. Being a Breeder and fancier this book offers a wealth of information, especially on kennels and lines. I was delighted that the book featured many of the best dogs in the lines I am working with. As another reviewer put it, we should look to this book to see what shelties looked like when they were bred the to the standard, how they should look, unlike the current trends in sheltie today, that I feel are poor. If someone wanted to see some excellent example of the breed, I would tell them to look at his book, rather than go to a dog show. This book shows the great kennels and the great dogs, and is a necessity for any serious fancier. However, I do not recommend it for the casual pet owner, or anyone who is simply not intrested in lines or champions and simply wants a basic guide to learn how to properly care for their sheltie, and what to expect. For this person, I recommend "Shetland sheepdog: A Guide to a Happy, Healthy pet" by cathy merrithew. It is much more appropriate for a pet owner, yet still contains enough info on sheltie history to to be boring or too basic. The book of the shetland sheepdog is a valuable reference to any fanciers bookshelf. I refer to mine often. If you are serious about the sheltie, go buy a copy!
Wealth of Information for breeders: Learn your roots
This book is an excellent resource for those who want to seriously develop a bloodline and are ready for the work required to research. With a wealth of pedigrees and pictures you should be able to find quality individuals behind your Sheltie. If you are new to the breed the pictures should give you an overall view so you can determine what type (and line) fit your expectations. Older pictures (less 'perfected' than modern photo work) honestly show where we came from. A worthwhile purchase for serious breeders or lovers of the breed.
I lvoed looking at the sheltie before they were "improved."
I intend on buying this book sometime soon, when I can afford it. There are many pictures of
my shelties line and I enjoy looking at them, over
and over. Looking at the "old timers" I see what
I love in the sheltie and will continue to look for,
although modern breeders have altered their look drastically their has to be some that are true
to the great champions. Maybe, the breeders of
today should look to the past for the shelties future

Great synopsis of the American breed - in its day
I got this book when it was brand new, when I hadn't even bought an AKC dog yet. (Apparently they never updated it, though.) TFH put out just a few "Book of the..." series, and for the sake of other breeds, I wish they had done all! The GSD version is an excellent photo-gallery, giving a nice synopsis of the breed history, and numerous references to contemporary dogs via photos and also numerous pedigree pages. This was a superb reference if you wanted to get boned up on top American show dogs and lines in 1985. No other breed book ever did that. Thus, I learned alot about pedigrees which helped when checking out prospects. In fact, knowing the top dogs and top pedigrees is really the only major difference between breed discussions. Minor differences may be work/sport focus, and diseases/conditions typical for the subject breed. At best, other breed books cover the minor differences. My disappointment, on reflection, is that Nicholas is AKC-oriented, and unfortunately AKC GSDs leave a bit to be desired. (The dog I got was half German and American.) I would love to have a book like this based on "German" dogs so I could get a foothold in the contemporary German side; what are the top bloodlines, who are top dogs, what do they look like, etc. Also, the date on amazon still says 1985; TFH should update it after 15 years if it's still published and sold new!
good summary in pictures
if you're looking for a lot of pictures of champions both good and bad then this is the book for you. the section naming the different kennels in the USA was very informative.
The quintessential coffee table book
Provides a comprehensive history of the breed in Germany, America, and throughout the world, while discussing such essentials as breeding, training, puppy selection and care, veterinary advice, grooming, showing, obedience and more.

Good for History and Showing, not much else
This book is not a complete overview of the boxer in any meaningful sense. While it does have occasional chapters which apply to boxers in general, the majority of this book is devoted to history of the breed and information on showing the dog. Most of the generally applicable information on the Boxer was hopelessly biased, with the general portrayal being that Boxers are born dignified and noble. The entire first 150-160 pages are nothing but history of famous boxers and similar information. If this is your cup of tea, you'll love this book. Personally, I'd hoped for a little more practical information.
The Boxer by Anna Katherine Nicholas
This has to be one of the best books on the market about Boxers. Everything this former show judge says about the breed is right on the mark. The most concise & complete guide recording the history of the breed. A "must buy" for those who can only afford one book. A great addition to an existing library. The author speaks in terms that the layman can easily understand. Great Book.

The book has excellent color pictures and is very informational on aspects of the dog. I would rank this book five stars if it was more recent. Beautiful pictures of a very tough and protectful breed.

A comlete waste of money
This book is a complete waste of money. It looks nice and glittering, but in reality it is devoid of information. I had hoped for some specific information on Norfolk terriers, as Im the happy owner of a Norfolk puppy. It is difficult to convey the extend of my disappointment with this book. Its gives me an impression like: get a lot of pictures, make an "change all" in a standardtekst from xx to Norfolk and you have a book on Norfolks. It doesnt even have a race-standard, let alone an explanation of the race-standard. Or specified instruktions on stripping or trimming or..... Besides I find it extremely irritating, that there is a lot of advertizing, disguized as information. Avoid this book if you are serious about your Norfolk. What you can try to do is get hold of the old book on Norfolk by Joan R. Read. It looks a bit oldfacioned, but it is full of information. and it is much, much better.
This book is PAWSOME
This book is pawsome! It covers all you need to know about Norfolk Terrier care, trimming, special needs, sicknesses prone to the breed,as well as some very interesting facts about Norfolk Terrier history as well as to how the breed came about. I feel that this book is wonderful and I rate it 10 paws up! If you love Norfolk Terriers I feel you will enjoy this book as much as I did!
Its a great book
There isn't a huge selection of books about Norfolk Terriers, but this book does a great job covering much of what you need to know. The history of the Norfolk terrier was very interesting. This also gives good information on proper grooming.

NOT FOR THE REGULAR DOG OWNER
I, too, was a little disappointed in this book. Although I loved the photographs of the beautiful little hounds, I was dismayed that the book contained nothing recent. The book was little more than a step-by-step manifesto on how you, too, can enter your beagle in a show and the issues concerning dog shows. I was disappointed that very little was offered in the way of the care of the hound and that the book was really directed towards showing the hounds as opposed to regular owners. Although information about showing beagles is all very well and good, I did not feel this work did a good job in presenting that information.
I gave this an extra star because the photographs (although dated) of the hounds were very appealing.
The Beagle
One of the best beagle books ever! I have read and refer to it daily.
the beagle
I Read this book when it was published and over the years lost my copy. This book is for the exibitor,I believe, specifically for those who look at pedigrees and like to match photos to names of dogs you were not able to see personally either because you were not exibiting at the time the dog was shown,or were not in the same geographic area... I would also recommend their previous book Beagles and Beagling....jfahrlen@bellsouth.net

Norwich Terrier
This is a good book to have if you own a Norwich Terrier.
There are not to many books on the Norwich.
The person who wrote the previous review spelled Norwich wrong.
Even in my Vet's computer the program has it spelled wrong.
Norwich is not even listed in the animal shelter's computer program.

Norwhich Review
This book provides historical information on the Norwhich and general dog care information, that is standard in this series. The color pictures are a nice touch and show the Norwhich in their best adorable poses. It is good for the first time dog owner who may need general information on the Norwhich and general dog issues.
