my favorite hanukkah tale
Over the eight days of Hanukkah, there's ample time to sneak this book into your child's bedtime readings. It is lovely tale that teaches that beauty can be found in the most simple things. Reinforcing the idea of Hanukkah, that spiritual items, though they may look mundane, have greater power and beauty than a more Hellenistic idea of artistic beauty.

THIS WILL LIGHT UP YOUR HOLIDAY
This gently written Hannukah story is a lesson in what is really beautiful. Rachel visits her grandmother and comments on an old, obviously hand made menorah made of odds and ends. She thinks it is ugly and tells her grandmother that.

Rachel's grandmother, a wise and articulate woman tells Rachel that she just needs to understand the story behind that menorah. She described her life as a young wife during the Depression Years when money was hard to come by. She saw a beautiful, very ornate menorah in a shop window and wanted it. Unable to afford it, her husband went into his shop, and, using assorted scraps around the place built a makeshift menorah. That way, they could celebrate the ancient, wonderful traditions together with something he had made.

Rachel is understandably moved by the menorah's history. She decides it is beautiful because it was made by love. When her mother comes to pick her up and comments on how ugly she thinks the menorah is, Rachel tells her it is NOT ugly, it is beautiful!

Rachel was right. It really was beautiful, just like this story.

Are They Ties? Or Knots?
Did you think that a person could love their stepbrother more than their stepmother? If you don't, read Amelia's Family Ties by Marissa Moss. Amelia's Family Ties is about a girl that gets a letter from her dad and he is inviting Amelia to meet him and his family. Find out more by reading this wonderful book.
On a scale from 1 to 10 I would rate this book a 9. I like this book because it has a lot of detailed pictures that go with what she is telling about and I also like it because this could really happen.
I think that the author wrote this book because this might have been like her life or someone's she knew.

Fabulous book about seeing the good and the bad...
In this book, Amelia writes to her Dad and goes to visit with him. She's happy about her baby step-brother, but not so happy about her stepmother, Clara. This is a must-have for any fan of the Amelia series, but I'd suggest reading the first ones, Amelia's Notebook, Amelia Writes Again, and Amelia Takes Command.

Hurray for Amelia!
This Amelia Book was EXCELLENT! It seems like the last in the series, but lets hope not! To understand the whole Amelia, read the first book... AMELIA'S NOTEBOOK which was published a looooog time ago, Oh, well! HURRAY FOR AMELIA!

OH MY GOSH!
In this book Amelia's school burned down! She also turns a year older... so now she's a 10 years old! This a wonderful book telling the readers about how Amelia deals with the burning school, how things change with her best friend - Leah, and how her birthday turns out! But make sure you real Amelia's Notebook first!

This book was also a favorite of mine when I was around 9 to 10 years old!

I can totally relate to this smart, loving girl named Amelia
What I got for my b-day was all the Amelia books. This one was great. The fire at her school . . . the stories, her hopes from her best friend. . . . Anything you absolutely feel like you relate to is in the Amelia books. I suggest you read them all. Even grown-ups can read them. Amelia is the best of all!

Amazing Book!
This is a funny story, and you will never know what's going to happen next. Amelia tells absorbing stories in the book. For example in The Good luck Story. A girl found a penny. She picked it up for good luck and put it in her pocket, but the pocket had a hole. I'm not going to spoil the end of the story. In this journal it's Amelia's birthday. But I'm not going to tell you what she got for her birthday, either! Also something happened Amelia's school. I can't tell you any endings. Her best friend Leah asked if she can look in Amelia's notebook. Amelia didn't know what to say to Leah, yes or no. In the last part it will tell you. So that means you have to buy the book to see what happens. I give this book four stars because a few parts were kind of boring, but most of the book was really good.

Emma's World
In 1774, 10-year-old Emma was sent away from home to be a servant in her Aunt Harmony's manor in Boston. Little did the simple serving girl expect that war would brew up in Boston harbor. Emma helps with war effort.

I only gave this book 3 stars because it was too short and it didn't tell much of Emma's life as a serving girl.

Emmas' Journal
I liked the book Emmas' journal because it was partially based on the life of a real girl. I enjoyed how it was somewhat detailed about life in the past. I did not particually like how the days jumped around though.

Fabulous Book!
I think this book would be a good birthday preasent for a girl because I think girls would be interested in it.

Yawn: Unlike the other books, once was enough
This Amelia journal, for the faithful follower, feels hacked out. It doesn't have the same verve or interesting characters that usually bounce off the pages. These books are so great to look at but the theme this time is how our usually strong Amelia tries to change her look to be popular, risking friends in the process. The book lacked its usual spunk. Hopefully Amelia will bounce back and launch into adolescence a little more like her old self.

This book is SO funny!
This book was really good. This book is really great because it makes you feel like a kid wrote the book instead of an author. It was so good that I read it in one day because I could not put it down.It was great and I can't wait to read more Amelia books!

Amelia's School Survival Guide
Girls ages 8-12 love this book. The manner in which the text is written is rather busy. Also, as a teacher, this book would be difficult to read to a classroom full of students. Furthermore, learning disabled students would find this book laborious to read.

Amelia's School Survival Guide
This book is for girls ages 8-12. They will love the "American Girl" book. It is very busy and is not for a reader who is distracted easily. It has tips and quizes, cool stickers and a cute sense of humor. The girls will love it.

"Google:" mind-boggling and well worth a goggle.
"G is for Google" explains complex math concepts in a palatable format. From "abacus" to "zillion," detailed descriptions are combined with fun cartoons and illustrations that bring math concepts down to earth. Even adults can learn a thing or two from this book: for instance, how the German city of Konigsberg, with its seven bridges, came to demonstrate the network theory. How many grown-ups really know the quantity of a google, the two ways of writing a google, and how this number got the name "google" in the first place?

Armed with this book, I was finally able to answer some of my son's questions, such as "what comes after a trillion?" Answer: a quadrillion, a quintillion, a sextillion, and so forth. This information is filed under "z is for zillion," where it is explained that a zillion is not a real number, but merely means "a lot." (One of many math myths dispelled in the book.) Some other terms that are explained include: "fibonacci," "exponent," and "probability," as well as the less intimidating "jupiter" and "diamond."

While the alphabet format is more conducive to browsing than reference, there is a glossary of math terms in the back of the book. "G is for Google" is primarily for ages nine and up, although some younger children who are particularly interested or gifted in math may benefit.
