Erotic photographs (almost) without people
To find this book of photographs by Ormerod - already several years old - at a bargain price was a happy event. The book is roughly evenly divided between colour and black and white work. The hair-sharp colour prints, like most colour photos, you feel you've seen before (Ormerod is somewhere between Eggleston and Misrach), but a handful of the black and whites stand out for their quiet interest in a world that is clearly foreign to the English-born photographer. Here is the photographer I would like to be - direct but unobtrusive. However, both critical essays included with the works in the book feel compelled to explain its relative lack of human figures (the cover image is uncharacteristic of most in this collection), as though this is an embarrassing oversight of the photographer: a weakness about which one must be exceedingly respectful and polite. One of the two writers actually atones for the missing persons by talking about 'the implied presence' of human beings in the pictures. Why can't people bear to contemplate photos in which some fragment of their own compulsive sociality is not reflected? There is a superb floating quality in these Ormerods that is completely deferential to the need of the viewer to travel into the picture and experience parts unknown without interference. Despite the tendency of all photographers to minimise distances and to destroy exoticism because they are always in reality debt and must go, like Muhammad, to the mountain, Ormerod's pictures tell me something exquisite about the largeness of the world, like graffiti on a public statue whose authors are utterly removed from oneself. Whole country towns seen from a hilly rise: you will never know them, never see them except through him. An intense, dreamy abstract romanticism operates here that neither critic seems to see at all; no, he is just a social commentator like the rest, that dull worthy animal. Whereas Ormerod tells his viewers clearly that people as such, people as characters, are of no interest to him at all, the critics respond in an absurdly tenacious way that Ormerod must be making oblique 'allusions' to political contingency, poverty, social unrest, a nation's failed dreams, and so on - idiotically personalising his lonely, lovely car wrecks with a broken radiator-grimace. You may of course agree with the critics that this collection is depressingly devoid of signs of human life. What is the basic difference between the critics and me? Why do we see Ormerod's collection so differently? Desire and isolation, exception, endless roaming are all the one thing to me. The 'implied presence' is always erotic to me. To others, eroticism inheres in people, in overflowing gatherings and exchanged glances; to me it inheres in people's deliciously frustrating absence, their reticence and refusals. If you have always viewed photographs as opportunities to travel while imagining the forms of human life that go on elsewhere, this collection will hold great appeal. Photographic representations of absence will make the average critic think there is something polemical in the artist's intentions (rusting ploughshares in superannuated fields lead to pieties of the 'throwaway society' sort). Lonely places make them think of the great, dry political themes - hardly a turn-on. They judge accordingly. I urge you to see for yourself whether these rather restricted criteria do Michael Ormerod justice.

All that glitters is not Rob Vieira
I had mistakenly thought that Wrox books were held to a higher standard. First getting a taste for them going through both of Rob Vieira's two SQL Server Programming books and regarding them as the finest technical books I've ever seen. However this Professional SQL Server 2000 XML is a disappointment. Part of the problem lies with having 12 different authors because it seems a bit jumpy. I think I'll really try to limit my future purchases to single source efforts. Also, no care was taken with the code examples that you can download from the Wrox website. The book shows the source but there is really no way of really matching the example to the source other than guessing the name. Often I've needed to open up all 15 or so files in the directory to realize that the particular example is not included. I'm picking my way through but it is not pleasant.

Not that good for .Net developers
It is a good book as far as explaning what SQL Server has to offer regarding XML capabilities but it should have covered the case studies fully with the .Net Framework. Also, it covers very good the IIS configuration, and how to manage XML Templates, XPath and Schemas. The book has a migration example from ASP to ASP.Net which does not cover ADO.Net. If you want a rich source on how to integrate SQLXML and the .Net Framework THIS IS NOT THE BOOK.

No other book covers SQL XML features like this one does
I looked at two other SQL Server 2000 XML books, but found this one to be the best - covering almost everything on SQL Server 2000 XML. Very well written, nice examples help understand the technology better. The chapter on Updategrams is very useful. I wanted to learn updategrams and this chapter covers it nicely to get started using them in production.

Excellant Science!!
This is a well written scientific book that debunks the evolution and "old earth" myths. This is a book that you will want to read more than once and keep permanently in your collection. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the author left me wanting more. You won't be disappointed with this book. I would also recommend reading books by this author's father (Dr. Henry M. Morris).

An Excellent Scientific Book
Based on his lifetime experience within the scientific community, John D. Morris has masterfully put together a wealth of information. This book cuts through the rhetoric used by the media to propagate evolution as fact. This book carefully discusses and analyzes the history of the earth. Each of the conclusions allow the reader plenty of information to follow up on, in case the reader is skeptical. This is a must have in your library. Because this information is formatted to address the average layperson, we should not deem it unworthy. John is the president of ICR (Institute for Creation Research), and his research and methodology is accurate and straightforward. I have read the other lower rated reviews on this book and find they are based on the philosophical beliefs of the individual and not on fact. If you take the time to look into some of John's conclusions you will find them to be not only accurate but unambiguous. I have read many books by John D. Morris and his father Henry Morris, and through careful analysis found no fault in any of their books.

Morris exposes the Bogus dating methods
Some thoughts for Philosophical/Biblical Consideration the Young Earth Is God also the Author of Millions of Years of Death, Bloodshed, Disease, Suffering, Mutations, and Extinction? In other words, is God going down the "Progressive Creation" highway of millions of years of time, leaving "Road-Kill" where ever He goes? Is God cruel, sadistic and extremely wasteful? Is that "Very" Good? Is that what the Bible clearly teaches? There are many who have rejected the Genesis record of Creation on what they believe are "scientific grounds." They believe that the current secular (naturalistic / humanistic) teachings of evolution and millions of years of earth history are accurate (e.g. Meredith Kline, Hugh Ross to name a few). Nonetheless, they have involved God in their particular versions of Creation, with "Theistic Evolution" and "Progressive Creation" being some of the more popular opinions circulating among churches today. Dr. Morris give well documented answers to the dating game so many have been lead to believe!

Never underestimate the power of denial
It is unfortunate that these men feel the need to dilute themselves into believing that they can lay down a foundation for scientific creationism. First of all, science could never validate creationism because it is based on religous scripture that deals with intangible things (walking of water, miraculous cures, stopping the sun, and other things which defy science)

How can this science deny such fundamental discoveries like; radioactive dating, doppler effect (supporting the big bang), evolution by natural selection, and punctuated equilibrium. These are fundamental tenets to science and give us an accurate potrayal of our world. It baffles me to think that people will go to epic links to belch forth their brand of ignorant and intolerent "science". I would like to propose this scenerio.... had the bible never been written and all we had to go on was man's instincts and intelligence, what conclusion would we come to independent of religous belief. If there was no "moral" scripture to guide/control our thoughts, how would our view of earth's history be changed. Would we have evolution vs. creationism debates? We have to ask ourselves if our religous fervor is controlling our rational minds. Are these people so afraid of a life without biblical fanaticism that they will intentionally put out falsified information. It is books like this that make me believe that god is most certainly indifferent to our plight on earth, otherwise he wouldn't put such self-righteous, sanctimonious zealots here on earth to pollute our minds. Science is the answer, because it has no bias, if there was proof of god and the hand he/she played in our creation science would be the first to admit it. The evidence doesn't suggest the fairy tale these "writers" would have us believe.

This Book Started the Modern Scientific Creationist Movement
A classic! Friends and foes of Biblical truth both agree that this seminal book was largely responsible for triggering the modern revival of interest in creationism.

Even though most of its scientific content has been superceded by more recent creation science, it still provides a useful framework for understanding Flood Geology. The theological portion of this book is invaluable for showing the incorrectness of compromising evangelicals who try to twist Scripture to make it fit a local flood instead of the indisputably global Noachian Deluge. A must read!

Impressive
Had you asked me a year ago, I would have said that the Biblical story of Noah could not possibly be taken literally. Now I have been forced to reconsider my position.

The authors did what I have never seen or heard before: used the scientific evidence rather than ignoring it. One question I would like to pose for the casual reader: how is it possible we have massive fossil deposits of extinct animals (dinosaurs, et cetera) from millions of years ago, yet no fossil deposits of modern animals? That is a question that made me wonder why I hadn't heard it before.

Despite the statements of some reviewers, who based on their reviews didn't seem to have read the book in depth, the authors do use scientific evidence to back up their position. It isn't the usual assertion that we must believe the Bible because the Bible says so.

I would recommend this book to everyone; and I plan to present these arguments to geologists and challenge them to refute them.

Of course, you should read this for yourself before you decide.

Highly biased
Sorry, but as a paleontologist, I really hate to see religious philosophy thinly veiled as "science."

Not for Children
I think its a shame that this book is being touted as a book for children. Especially given the supposed Christian theme. Telling a child that if they, or anyone sins God's punishment is death is really counter productive to what Christianity is all about. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Truth about Dinosaurs for Kids
I look forward to more science books based on the Creation Theory as evidence continues to pile up against the Theory of Evolution. This is a terrific, entertaining book for kids who are interested in dinosaurs, and for their parents!

Pseudo Science
This is a great book if you have zero understanding of science and are willing to accept anything to build up a story to support unfounded beliefs. It is probably acceptable to discredit science entirely and then adhere to a literal interpretation of genesis 1 and 2. However, it is absolutely sinful to call it "science" and thereby make Christians look like fools. The authors of this book clearly understood the science they were converting into voodoo. (See the section on thermodynamics and entropy.) Shame on them!

A must have for any critical thinker
This is a fantastic set for anyone who doesn't wish to be whitewashed by the the education and "science" establishments regarding the origins of mankind. Piece by piece, these three books dismember the straw man that is evolutionary "theory."

Where other books, such as Phillip Johnson's "Defeating Darwinism," lightly touch the tangle of evolutionary theory, these delve into it in depth. Nevertheless, the uninitiated will have little trouble understanding that the evidence (as presented by evolutionists, mind you) really favors the creation model.

When Men Frolicked with the Dinosaurs
The synopsis for this book reads, "What was it like when men and dinosaurs lived side by side?"

Any idiot knows that these two species were not contemporaneous. It's a wonder this volume hasn't entered the school system already.

I haven't read this book, but if this is the kind of garbage it contains, RUN the other way!

an eye popper...
Several people would resist the idea that Noah's ark indeed did happen. They claim to believe in Bible and in the Noah's ark. But they have no idea what it was like before the Flood. The life and enivornment was totally different changed after Flood. A must for diligent Bible students, also a challegne to the skeptics of Bible.

They Know Not What They Do
The very title of the book tells you something about the intelligence-level of its writers and readers: the authors are too dim to see the self-incriminating pun in "steeling." But they aren't actually stealing the mind of America, for the simple reason that they and their audience have nothing which could be called a "mind" in the first place.

I was given a copy of this book by an American friend, who promised me it would help me understand why his country elects people like George W. and Jesse Helms. It worked. In fact, it worked far too well.

At first the book seemed merely laughable in its credulity, bigotry and xenophobia. But as I read on, laughter turned to horror. I see now--I see all too clearly--why the US could sabotage the Kyoto Treaty and go on pollluting this planet's atmosphere, and even believe it's doing God's work in the process. The mad American Christian right wants the Earth to be trashed, and the sooner the better--because the destruction of the Earth is the goal, the happy Disney ending, of its psychotic apocalyptic scenario.

If you can force yourself to read this book right through (no easy task for anyone who cares about prose style), you will be rewarded with an insight into the real motivation of the Christian American right: a hatred of all life, and a drooling eagerness for the world to be destroyed.

A must-read for every truth-seeking American.
After seeking various sources for Biblical truth and the truth about what is happening both within and without the United States, this expose of five authors has put it all together so everyone can finally know the truth about our future. If you are a Christian, this book will put the Bible prophesies into perspective...if you are not, it should scare the hell out of you! Being a parent in today's American society is hard now and is even going to get more difficult as the minutes tick away and we head toward the Second Coming! The betrayal of the American people by the so-called "Democracy" is a mockery when we discover the extent of the "duping" which Americans have incurred over the past 200+ years. Waiting for the "rapture" (with the word not even appearing in the Bible one time!), has been the "Christian" thing to do. Guess what? The time for standing up for Yahwah and His Word is not later...it's NOW! "MY PEOPLE ARE DESTROYED FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE." HOSEA 4:6. If the Founding Fathers could walk among us today, the state of this once great country would certainly bring tears to their eyes as they would see their works (The Constitution of the United States of America; The Declaration of Independence; The Bill of Rights, etc.) as ALL being for not. When you begin reading this book, you will not want to put it down until you have turned the last page! Then, you will continue thinking and wondering...then you will pick it up and want to read it again...this time more slowly and wanting to remember every detail so you can recall the information. If you have a Bible study group, whether they are high school age or adult, each one of them should own their own personal copy of this transcript!

Jamacian '60s spy thriller
Having traveled in Jamacia during the '60'/70 this book is historically interesting though somewhat dated now. Basically a coldwar spy thriller, it has an OK plot and is an easy and interesting read to the extent that I'm looking for other works by the same authors (JohnMorris is a pen name)

A better script for a better work in a small world
This book should be a better book, if the author gave a copy sample of some chapters, or only a resume of each chapter, or full version (I hope). Actually, I want to learn more about Business Intelligent working in a company which is being a motivator or one of competence requirement needed by manager for their employees. But Knowledge Manager seems a good one since I read a chapter written by western people (I forgot the name). He wrote "how to change the information into knowledge", and it could cunsumed by manager for their employees' brain development. I hope you and your team would have a better creation, for this strugle life. OK friends, may your scripts gave some bright ideas for a better, smartter work in you and in some other places. Have a nice day from me, Bastian MH Pasaribu
