Best Collection since Trouble is My Business
Perfect starting point for those looking for where splatterpunk got its attitude. A dozen stories, polished like diamonds, cutting through the bull like a laser through warm butter. Like Hemingway on crank, Fitzgerald on bad acid, Shirley's heroes learn to kill with all the moronic glee of a gangster trying out his first machine gun

A great study of a great man
When Edgar Allen Poe died in Baltimore in l849, John G. Morris was already one of that city's prominent men. His "Lutherville Female Seminary," a pioneer educational insitution in this country exclusively for women, was to open just five years later.. As the Civil War loomed on the horizon, Morris was a Union man in a Southern city. He used to run to the train station to wave flags and shout "Hurrah" at Union troops passing through Maryland . A Lutheran Pastor and much more, Morris helped found Baltimore's world famous Peabody Institute and achieved world class recognition as an entomologist. Like many l9th century clergymen, he saw himself as a shaper of culture and destiny for his country and his city. His relationship with the Smithsonian Institute in Washington was just one of his many cultural and patriotic achievements. If "What is Past is Prologue," Dr. Kurtz has given us a valuable insight into 21st century America in his well-written biography of John G. Morris.

an excellent introduction to john pawson's minimalism
after reading that bruce chatwin had his london apartment designed by john pawson, i went looking for books on pawson's work, and found four. after studying them for a while, i chose this book. it is not the biggest, doesn't have the most pictures, and isn't the cheapest, but it does have beautiful balance. i tried unsuccessfully to wait until after work to look through it, but after a few hours i broke down and skimmed it. i am currently reading through it in detail, and i just love it.

it has a nice selection of buildings and projects, and with all the various opinions from a variety of different types of people, gives an unusual, but fascinating introduction which leaves me wanting to find out still more. the one regret i have about this book is that there are no pictures of chatwin's apartment, but then none of the others i looked at had them either. there are also a number of useful references to other architects strewn throughout the text, as well as an index to john pawson's body of work. highly recommended.

Not just for regents!
Although this is a "regents" book, it's a great help for any chemistry course. I even crammed out of it, and got a 760 on the chem SAT IIs. This is THE review book for chem.

Explores memory, mind, and self in action format
I believe that this is Stith's best (haven't read 'Reckoning Infinity' or 'Scapescope'). Protagonist is an individual living in an O'Neil type habitat who has undergone a procedure that rmoves memories of personal past for the previous several years. The rest of the book is the story of regaining his memory with the help of a cleverly written AI, and, of course, foiling a plot to end civilization as we know it. I really like Stith's writing; his characters are not necessarily the deepest, most convoluted personalities you could concoct, but they are very engaging. His writing, combined with an inventive plot, and the exploration of what memory is and how it relates to ego make this a very enjoyable novel. The worst thing about it is that it is out of print.

A tale from the rainforests of Southeast Asia
I had the feeling of being in the heart of a tropical rainforest while reading this book. The story setting is as compelling as the tale: rivers, thick foliage, flora and fauna, snakes, butterflies, frogs, birds etc. A visual treat that will help a child appreciate a charming folk tale of how the humble but quick mouse deer outwits the fearsome crocodile. One of the most well-known folk tales in the Southeast Asia region.
