Excellent Review of ECT - electroconvulsive, electroshock
This book by Dr. Robert P. Morgan explores the history of ECT, as well as its re-emergence as a treatment of choice, based on the marketing of a new and improved ECT. Says Morgan: "The only depression it cures is the economic depression of psychiatry." Anyone who is interested in the history of ECT and the medical issues surrounding it should read this book. It includes chapters by Dr. Peter Breggin, Dr. John Friedberg and Leonard Roy Frank. If you only read one book about ECT, let it be this one.

A funny thing happened...
The first survey exhibition of artist Ellen Gallagher, titled "Watery Ecstatic", was presented at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. The catalog is published as a gorgeous hardcover art book edited by the exhibition's curator, Jessica Morgan. The catalog captures the scale and power of the paintings and drawings as they were presented at the ICA. More importantly, the book stands on it's own as a well rounded representation of the artist and a fine volume of reproductions.

The paintings are presented as full color plates. The paper stock and binding are of excellent quality. The selection of works on paper are reproduced on a heavy stock that is matte rather than glossy. It's a nice touch. An important strength of Ellen's work is her construction of a visual language and her consistent, although not repetitious use of this device. Morgan's interview with Ellen Gallagher is a fascinating exploration of the artist's language and conceptual ideas. The political and social relevance of the work are explored in two full length essays contributed by Greg Tate and Robert Storr.

I'll have to admit up front that I was biased against the exhibition before I walked in. I never imagined that I would purchase the book. As a classmate of Ellen's from the School of The Museum of Fine Arts, and someone who watched the phenomenon of her success unfold, I could never deny the strength and integrity of the work. I was skeptical though, that one young artist, early in her career could fill up the small museum effectively. I changed my mind on the first viewing. The range required for an exhibition of this scale was present and surpassed expectation. Ellen is certain to have a long and fruitful career as an artist. I believe that her work is important.

"Gallagher has demonstrated that you can hit an alarm bell gently and have it ring as long as one which has been hit violently, providing, of course, that the ambient noise does not drown out the more delicate sound." - Robert Storr

Great stories from earliest Christianity to present.
I was so inspired by the courage and determination found in the stories from this devotional that I plan to use it as a teaching resource for our church's high school Sunday School class. It is alway faith-building to read about how real people are used by God to work out His plans. The stories themselves are very readable and interesting -- touching and challenging. The Scripture application is easily determined. This book proves God loves us and He is able to help us. It proves that God wants to use us in His plans to reach out to the world. Excellent practical application of the Scriptures to every day life. I heartily recommend this book!

A great introduction to Morgan's poetry
Robert Morgan published poetry for thirty years before making the bestseller lists with his novel Gap Creek. Green River offers selections from his first eight books, from Zirconia Poems (1969) to Sigodlin (1990), plus a few new poems. Morgan usually writes about the Appalachian culture and landscape (as in the terrifying "Mountain Bride"), but there are notable exceptions, such as his sublime "Vietnam War Memorial." It's startling to see how good his poems are right from the beginning, fascinating to see how his style changes over the years, and dismaying to think that a poet this remarkable could be so little-known. Reading this book led me to read all of his other poetry books; now I can say that if Green River has a fault, it's that it's too selective. Few poets are as consistently good as Morgan is; there are many more very fine poems that could easily have found their way into this selection. But Green River is a great introduction to the work of this contemporary master.

James Madison on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights

James Madison on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights
James Madison on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights by Robert J. Morgan is as the author says a work where, "Madison provided us with an unmistakable key to understanding his thought and actions as a constitutional reformer, when he said that the rights of man are the foundation of just governments, but manknd had deduced only defective superstructures of government as of 1776."

The book is divided into two parts, as such each has chapters grouped according to relevance. Part one labeled Power, with chapters of: To Improve and Perpetuate the Union, A Proper Energy in the Executive, The True Principles of Republican Government, and Supporting and Restraining the Executive.

Part two labeled Rights with chapters of: Political Liberty, A Few Obvious Truths, The Very Essence of Free and Responsible Government, and The Framer's Muse.

James Madison was kind of unique in that he believed in a republican form of government like Thomas Jefferson, but he also became a constitution reformer because he wanted to expand the federal powers, but only, to preserve this republican government as to keep this form of government strong enough to fulfill America's unique destiny. Madison had a very keen grasp, an insight if you will, of the enormous difficulties entailed in creating the office of president and maintaining it over time. This, I believe, was one of the downfalls Madison had with his own Presidency. Madison struggled as President. He believed and would later say, "would any single person be endowed with such singular talents and superior devotion to the common good as to be chosen to excerise power without challenge by his peers."

Madison as with Jefferson were both well read, especially with the European thinkers, Hume, Adam Smith, Edmund Burke and Immanuel Kant. With Thomas Paine of Virginia espousing his anti-constitutional views, holding a lot of political backing, Madison at first didn't want the Bill of Rights. But, Madison was a man of reflection, and in order to get a greater backing for the Constitution of the United States, the Bill of Rights was adopted.

This book gives the reader insight into the thinking of Madison, his motives and meanings, and gives us that Madison's political thought as clear and gives us a simple interpretation that Madison speculated very little. The book is well documented and written with an easy readable style and explains Madison.

John Adams and James Madison both believed in the misfortune of history... how would they be remembered... by deeds and the handling of great events.

Excellent Resource for Busy Preachers
I have bought preacher's annuals and sourcebooks before, and never found much of use in them. This resource, however, has proven to be much much different. There are several options for each Sunday of the year, excellent pastoral resources, and illustrations that really illustrate. The convenience of the book being available on CD-ROM is a HUGE help to me. I have preached several sermons from this resource and have found it to be very practical. I look forward to the 2003 edition.

On Suicide- insights through Philosophy and Literature
This collection of essays, short stories, and poems all deal with the "Ultimate Question": to be, or not to be. Each philosopher, writer, or poet has contributed his or her own thoughts regarding suicide. Some of the selections are whimsical, such as a poem which discusses different ways of "doing it". Others are thought-provoking and emotional pieces, which bring up thoughts about why people commit suicide, and the feelings felt by those they leave behind. This book is suitable for scholars, teachers, professionals of all sorts, and especially those who may think twice before answering their own "Ultimate Question".
