Good, but there could be more
American Music: A Panorama is a cd that has many different tracks from American Music History. I think that it contains many good examples of this, but there could be so many more. Elvis, the artist of the century, has no songs, as well as many other influential artists from the 50's and 60's. The booklet in it also had many errors in track numbers and song title numbers in it. Overall it was good but could be better, and I definitely do not think it was worth the money.

Good Survey of American Music
I teach a course in United States music history at the high school level, and this college text is a good stretch for my students. It is clearly written, well organized, and provides great points for departure in my lectures. The accompanying CD set, though not perfect, is a convenient way to bring in examples and allows for some independent study. Music history teachers can augment the examples with their current CD holdings.
The text surveys "American" music, not just music of the United States, although that is in the majority. The distinction of American versus U.S makes for a good discussion point throughout the semester. We do not take the chapters in order (we begin with music of the early European settlers), and the book lends itself to that flexibility.
Although there may be better texts for specific music history topics, (i.e., Jazz or contemporary "serious" music) this is an excellent survey text for the advanced high schooler or college music history survey course. Term paper suggestions, questions for additional research and bibliography are included at the end of each chapter.

Devils in Art: Florence from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance
Published in Hardcover by Partners Publishers Group (1997)
Authors: Lorenzo Lorenzi and Mark Roberts
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Fascinating
I travel in Europe a lot, and while I am not a student of theology or religious art, I find both very interesting. I have always found the art regarding the devil to be some of the most heartfelt, visceral work, and I was excited to find this book. It lived up to my expectations, with beautiful pictures and a deep, well-reasoned analysis of the symbolism involved that took into account the conditions and beliefs of the times. I found myself involved and interested, and was well-educated by the time I was done with it. However, I wasn't finished with it at the end; I had to give up early. This is because near the end, Lorenzi goes into the devil in goldsmithing. While this was another prominent religious artform, it became too technical, with too many names and periods to keep track of. If it hadn't been for this last section, the book would have recieved five stars from me.
The book is still a fascinating read, and well worth your money. There aren't many books to be found that focus so effectively on the devil in art, and this is a good one.

A brief, interesting look at devils in Florentine art
This book struck me as an interesting thing to read when I was recently discovering the beautiful city of Firenze for the first time. I appreciated the biblical and social aspects of this non-fiction approach at devils and demons. I, also, not being a student of theology, found myself learning more about the history of the old testament of the bible while I read over the book. It kept me (an avid fan of FICTION.. ) attentive... I read the book in about two hours. If you are interested in the history of Florence, as well as Brunelleschi and other Florentine artists and architechts, I recommend this book. It is also a good read for people interested in devils, witchcraft, etc.

A perfect gift to your companion after a trip to Roma
Bernini was the creator of so many marvels in Roma you can consider this book as a guide book for this sacred capital. Bernini was not only the creator of the most famous fountain in Roma, he also printed his personality both to Vatican (famous arcades) and the rest of the town. You will also be interested to browse through sketches he made for the Louvre Palace in Paris. A good buy for travelers and neo-classical architecture amateurs.

Good introduction to the field of Community Mental Health!
This book provides a good overview of the field of Community Mental Health. I particularly liked the history of Community Mental Health in the U.S. and the discussion on the overuse of psychotropic medications. A case study of a mental health center in the South Bronx provides a real-life example of how successful a Community Mental Health program can be. I plan on recommending the text for a graduate class on the same topic at our local university.

Small Side Table Book for Western Decor
From the 1880's to the 1940's, non-Navajo individuals entered a world seldom seen by outsiders and became esteemed residents on the Navajo reservation. They were the Navajo traders, and they played a significant role in Navajo life during this time period. They ran the general store and pawn shop. They pushed for higher levels of craftmanship in Navajo arts and crafts and then marketed those products to the rest of the United States. The trading post was a central meeting place and a communication center, and the traders were the social service providers.

Lorenzo Hubbell was one of the earliest Navajo traders and is perhaps the most well known. Hubbell and his family ran the trading post at Ganado, Arizona. It is now the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site. The book is a small coffee table style book designed to be interesting to look at and quick to read. The text is primarily about Hubbell and his family and how he was involved in the issues of his time. It includes a summarized history of the Navajo people and well appointed color and black and white photographs.

Since this book is only about Hubbell and the Ganado trading post, this book is an excellent historical resource if you are planning on visiting that site or would like a souvenier book. I purchased it as a supplemental text to learn more about Hubbell after I had learned about other trading posts and the Navajo culture. If you are interested in learning more comprehensive information about the Navajo culture and the role of the traders, I would recommend "Wide Ruins" by Sallie Wagner and "Navajo Trader" by Cladwell Richardson. Out of the two books, "Wide Ruins" is my favorite, but both books contain personal stories of Navajo people and their culture. I learned more about the role the traders played in the Navajo world from "Wide Ruins" and "Navajo Trader" then from "Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site", but it achieves its purpose with style.

Indian Trader: the Life and Times of J. L. Hubbell
This new book by Ms Blue is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the Indian trader of the Southwest or indeed of the Southwest itself or of the Navajo people. For anyone who has visited the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site, at Ganado, you will feel as if you can indentify with the places mentioned. Ms Blue's long connection with the Navajo people gives her a great viewpoint from which to approach this subject.

Journey to the United States of North America
Published in Hardcover by Shoal Creek Pub (1980)
Author: Lorenzo De Zavala
Amazon base price: $15.00
Average review score:

As good as de Tocqeville as an 1830s foreign view of the U.S
Lorenzo de Zavala was an important Mexican politician who toured the U.S. in the early 1830s and wrote a book about it in Spanish published in Paris, apparently because the dictator Santa Anna wanted to kill him. Later de Zavala was the first Vice-President of the Republic of Texas.

In many ways the book is even more informative than de Tocqeville's "Democracy in America", although the opinions of the two men are similar about many matters.

The translation was only published in 1980 and is out of print. I hope a major publisher will pick up the book.

Beautifully written but could have been plotted better.
This is my first read of a Prantera book but I plan to read more. She has a gorgeous, fullblooded writing style; sparse but wonderfully construced language; great sense of dialogue; keen eye for detail; and a great ability to describe Italian people and places. I liked the book very much but wish she had plotted it in a more complex way. I can think of several possible twists that would have made the book more interesting.

Military medicine, not paramedicine
Considering the time that we are in, in this world, this book should be read by every medical provider. The Nuclear, Biological & Chemical sections are covered fairly well. Those are the only sections that present anything new. Various skills are shown but any medic worth their salt already knows how to start and IV and provide advanced airway management.

If you have recieved Haz Mat training, there may not be too much useful info in here for you. If you have recieved no specialized training like firefighter, haz mat, tactical etc this book would be very useful for you. This book covers, in great detail, NBC situations.

I got thrown off by the word "tactical" in the title. When paramedics see that word they think of working with a SWAT team or other police units. This book provides very little help to somebody working with police. This book is designed for military personnel, and does very little to help those of us in the civilian emergency medical field.

Most of what's in this book can be found in any paramedic textbook. It was a good look into how the military does things. I learned very little medical information from this book. All I learned is how the military does things. And especially, from what I know, most military NBC emergency procedures are classified, it hurts the information presented in this book.

The book did me very little good and served me next to nothing, but was a good read because I learned a few things.

Tactical Operational Medicine
Dr. De Lorenzo and Mr. Porter have written a very readable product on operational medicine. This is an area of medical practice that begs for more documentation, and this text is a good start. Although the information contained in the text leans heavily to the military operational side, there is a great deal of information useful to civilian Tactical services. Some of the opinions are a little controversial, but the authors take a stand and attempt to justify their opinions. Topic areas such as laser and microwave injuries are not available in other sources. The approach taken by these authors is very practical and useful from a clinical point of view. This book is a valuable addition to any emergency physician or paramedics library. I hope to see further editions with improvements.

Tactical EMS
This book is a blend of military medicine, tactical (as in law-enforcement/SWAT) EMS and state-of-the-art prehospital care. It achieves its stated goals of bringing the best of all these worlds to the medics in the trenches. Advanced techniques such as intubation and transport medicine are well-covered, while basic techniques such as manual carries are not overlooked. Particularly helpful are the sections on NBC/WMD, medication use and preparing patients for long transport.

Highly recommended for any emergency care provider desiring an in-depth look at tactical care.

To many mistakes
Now that I have made it I can tell you that this book had many mistakes. It doesn't give information on the different schools and the phone numbers that they do give were wrong. The advice on course selection was wrong as well. It devotes half a page to the MCAT and I can tell you this test is worth more than half a page of commentary.

Hard hitting advice. Much truth.
I am definitely a non-traditional student. This book has taught me many things I would have never known about. Like the fact that I should volunteer, be a leader in school clubs, etc, etc. I haven't applied to med-school yet, but I definitely know more about what it does take to get in.

it really worked twice.
I gave this book to my daughter in the middle of her freshman year. She was a premed major and did not do very well her first term. after reading the book she changed her major, became a volunteer EMT, did research and joined a women's Rugby team at school. These positioning steps resulted in her being admitted to medical school early in her junior year. She is now a third year medical student and attributes the book to getting in.

we then gave the book to a family friend whos daughter had good grades but did poorly on the mcats. after reading the book and following the sugestions she was accepted by 4 medical schools.

The book really worked, twice. It is best to read thye book in your Freshman year.
