An action packed historical novel
When the colonies revolt against England to establish what would become the United States of America, fifteen year old Lorenzo Bannister joins a secret flatboat operation delivering desperately needed medicine and gunpowder to George Washington's army in Lorenzo's Secret Mission. From the docks of New Orleans to the battlefields of the American Revolution, young readers will become deeply engrossed in this story of wartime travel up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, the horrors of slavery and of combat. An action packed historical novel, Lorenzo's Secret Mission is enthusiastically recommended reading for children -- especially those with an interest in learning about the contributions of the Spanish to the success of the Americans against the British in an epic struggle for emancipation and the founding of a new nation.

Masks Before the Altar

An Actor's Journey of Self-Discovery
It's the early 1950s at the dawn of the modern civil rights era. "Amos 'n' Andy" and "Beulah" are on television. Except for a few film roles (including those performed by a young actor named Sidney Poitier), opportunities for black actors are rather limited. James Wheaton, another young actor (who would later work with Poitier) is working long hours at the post office between intermittent radio assignments to support his wife and infant son. One day he gets a call to audition for a new repertory theatre company that plans to present quality plays to churches around the country. As a PK (or preacher's kid), he finds the concept intrigiung. The Bishop's Company as it is called, selects James Wheaton to join the company. He will be it's only black member. However, except for one play, he will be cast in roles not specifically written for blacks.

MASKS BEFORE THE ALTAR explores James Wheaton's first months with the Bishop's Company. In this fascinating memoir, Wheaton examines his many feelings regarding his participation with the group. In addition to relaying the struggles of a new theatre company, the book also gives one a glimpse of the state of race relations at the time.

Keep in mind that the book takes place right before sweeping changes in the United States that would end legal segregation. Although he was an army veteran and the graduate of a major institution in the North (Columbia University), Wheaton was not prepared for the daily interaction with whites that he faced with the Bishop's Company. As a result, he was forced to confront issues regarding race in a way that he had never experienced before. It must have been quite trying at times for the PK from Mississippi.

The book also explores key aspects of his life before joining the Bishop's Company. This includes an example of how black southerners used theatre in the church. It also gives one a sense of what it was like to be brought up in the black church in the first half of the twentieth century.

After participating in the Bishop's Company, James Wheaton would work frequently with the Ebony Showcase Theatre in Los Angeles as both actor and director. The theatre was founded by the late actor Nick Stewart specifically to provide opportunities for black actors. Ironically, Stewart is perhaps best known for his role as Lightnin' on the TV series, "Amos 'n' Andy." Later, James Wheaton would add television and film credits to his resume, working with people like Bill Cosby, Lloyd Bridges, Redd Foxx and George Lucas. Perhaps that'll be the subject of another book.

Whether you're familiar with Wheaton's extensive acting work or not, this book gives you a good sense of the time as it relates to both the struggles of black actors and community theatre in general. The book is also filled with interesting tidbits about entertainment and literary figures of the day. For example, at one point of the tour, the late child actor Bobby Driscoll performed with the Company.

Overall, MASKS BEFORE THE ALTAR is an intriguing book. At only 179 pages, it is also a quick read. It should be required reading for actors just starting out in the business. It's also for anyone interested in the ins and outs of repertory theatre. Another reason would be to discover what it was like to be an educated black man living and working among whites in the early 1950s. If any of these areas strike your interest, you owe it to yourself to check out this book.

Excellent textbook for courses in medical Spanish
This is the best textbook that I have found for a course in Spanish for the Medical Professions. It's also an excellent book for anyone in the medical professions who already knows the basics of Spanish and wants to learn the kind of Spanish necessary to interact with his or her patients.

Meditation - The source of inner strength
This book is not only interesting and written by a Master of Eastern Knowledge - I have discovered Lorenzo's novels, like " La Piedra de Maria Ramos, and I think he is also a master of Literature. The book has clearly described techniques, and step-by-step instructions on how to learn to meditate and gain inner strength and equilibrium.
This book is not only a narration of how the forces of the Human Spirit work, in association with God or the Universal Mind, but it is a very useful Manual to learn and practice the excercises that have made eastern culture so popular amongst the western world.

Music in the Seventeenth Century
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (1987)
Authors: Lorenzo Bianconi and David Bryant
Amazon base price: $37.00
Used price: $22.20
Average review score:

An ecclectic set of useful essays on many facets.
The format of this book is a bit different--it is an ecclectic set of useful essays that deal with various facets of the musical situation in the 17th century. While it is heavily weighted towards the musical situation in Italy, there are some chapters that cover developments in other parts of Europe. Given Bianconi's other texts, it should come as no surprise that this text is very opera-centric, and in fact, the author cites the development of opera as the defining feature of this period. While the various essays do not delve into extensive detail, as a whole, they provide a thourgh portrait of the 17th century.

To live and die in the V.I. Become a witness, not a reader.
This book should be made of glass rather than paper. I read through this book and saw the lives, the greed, the desperation, and the joy of people long since dead. "Night of the Silent Drums" brings the history of the bloody 1733 St. Jan, Dansk Vestindia slave revolt to the present. The Virgin Islands' drought that year was the only thing dry about this book. And it succeeds without couching our preconceived notions of slavery or slaves, plantations or masters, by telling the truth as well as the facts. This work is gratefully and substantially more than ink on paper. When you pick up this one you will become more of a witness than a reader

The Painter's Cat

Renaissance Art for Kids? Yes!

Ms. Wooding has achieved the unusual (if not the impossible) in providing an amusing but educational introduction to Italian Renaissance art for kids. Aimed at youngsters (Kindergarten -3rd grade), The Painter's Cat tells the tale of a cat named Micio (pronounced meesho) who lives with his artist friend Lorenzo. Frustrated by a lack of sympathy from his usually attentive companion, Micio leaves home but soon discovers he misses his art-cat life. Finally returning to his studio, Micio discovers he plays a more important role than he realized in Lorenzo's master works.

The Painter's Cat, though partly fictional, is based on the real life of Italian Renaissance master Lorenzo Lotto. Colorfully illustrated with paintings styled after those of Lotto himself, The Painter's Cat provides a valuable introduction to Renaissance life and art for children, and intriguing visual comedy for adults.

Excellent cookbook
When I first received this book I pretty much read it from cover to cover. It's a delight. Each recipe has a corresponding full-page photo. Further, a pertinent, and what I found to be enlightening, piece of information is included as a sidenote with each recipe. I wrote down 11 recipes that I plan to try -- more typically two, maybe three, is the number of recipes that I will make from any one cookbook. Anyhow, I have made the bolognese sauce w/ fresh egg pasta and it was excellent. The entire family loved it! The sections are well thought out and can be used as a guide to what you need. Want something fast? Quick Suppers. Something tried & true? the Classics. There were several terrific sounding recipes under Elegant Entertaining. Great to look at, fun to read, and well-chosen recipes. It's a keeper.

A most celestial book.
There is only one word that can describe this book: fabulous. Its gargantuan format ensures that you can see every detail of the spectacular and beautiful illuminations, while the text supplies informative commentary on each illustration. Although it is expensive, the size and quality of the book make it worth the price. A most excellent book.
