Still wonderful after all these years
I first owned this volume of poetry in 1978. That book simply fell apart after more than 20 years of reading and handling (sometimes roughly by my children). I replace this book with a new one just last year.
The old favorites are all here; Fireflies in the Garden, The Road Not Taken, Fire and Ice, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, and a hundred more. In my opinion this is the definitive volume on Frost.
I have always been awed by the number of poems Frost wrote about the stars. A Star on a Stoneboat, The Star Spitter, Stars, Canis Major and many others. Truly Robert Frost is the astronomers poet.
Also in this volume is perhaps my favorite Frost poem, Brown's Descent.
If you love reading Frost on a crispy fall evening, then you'll love reading him when the crickets chirp. You'll need to own this book.

The Poetry-Lover's Definitive Frost
Robert Frost was and is America's greatest poet. Excepting, perhaps, W. B. Yeats, he may be the greatest poet to write English in the twentieth century. (To me, it's a toss-up.) To read this volume systematically or desultorily is to become convinced of that. But Frost is, above all, accessible, so the casual reader may not appreciate the difficulty of what he does. Like much of the greatest art his looks easy, even inevitable.

All of Frost's poems are here, plus his two dramatic Masques. When this book first appeared (in 1969) it caused a furor: the editor, it was angrily asserted, presumed too much. He dared to clarify - inserting a hyphen here, excising a comma there. That furor has since died down, as people realize that he did not do away with the sacred texts (any emendation was noted), but simply performed his job as editor. He regularized spelling and the use of single and double quotes (though not Capitalization, which can legitimately be thought of as integral to the poet's expression (think of e.e. cummings!)), and corrected other obvious errors. The notes give the published variants for each poem, so if you wish you may make your own call on some of these finicky issues.

I cannot emphasize enough: BUY THE HARDCOVER! After all, you will be reading this book for the rest of your life. It is a beautifully-built volume, of an easy size and heft for use, with understated appealing typefaces and an exemplary design. Put out by Frost's long-time publisher, this is one of the few essential books of American literature.

The Road Less Traveled
"It is absurd to think that the only way to tell if a poem is lasting is to wait and see if it lasts, The reader of good poem can tell the moment it strikes him that he has taken an immortal wound-that he will never get over it...The proof of a poem is not that we have never forgotten it, but we knew at sight we would never forget it."

Robert Frost

I have to admit it! When I first met Robert Frost's poetry in Freshman English class I took an immortal wound-that I will never get over it. Perhaps the then recent memory of the white haired poet who inaugurated Camelot that cold, January day conditioned me to receive the wound. Maybe Fr. Sheridan's teaching opened these poems for me. Most of all, I think that it is the words themselves which have made the poetry of Robert Frost such an important part of my life for almost 35 years.

This complete collection complemented the high school text book to which I had so often referred over the years. Here is the source of lines which I have often quoted. Many family vacations have begun with: "I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep" (Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening).

When my son tries to silence his sister's singing he is reminded that "Of course there must be something wrong In wanting to silence any song" (A Minor Bird).

Here we find philosophical reflections. "Good walls make good neighbors" counters "Something there is that doesn't like a wall" (Mending Wall).

Here "The Death of a Hired Man" challenges us to reflect upon how we value and treat others while "Christmas Trees" reminds us that not all things have prices. Here we are invited to follow the road of the poet who wrote "I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference" (The Road Not Taken).

I have writen just a sampling of the treasures to be found in this collection, but I have written enough. It is now time to indulge again with words I have never forgotten. "I shan't be gone long-You come too." (The Pasture).

Restore your faith in justice - READ THIS BOOK
OK, so I am biased because Milo Radulovich is my cousin, but speaking as an (amateur) historian, I can say this is book is excellently researched. Michael Ranville gives you not only an incredible story of the "little man in turbulent times" (which is an incredible way to learn history) but also places the chronology of the Radulovich story against other US & World events of the time, giving the book a depth and range that many stories written in this fashion lack. This book is also fascinating from the perspective of the immigrants and "third culture kids" who shaped (and continue to shape) the American vision. This book is a must-read if you teach or study American history 1945-Present professionally. I wish everyone could meet Milo Radulovich; his courage then AND now, and that of the entire family, shines.

Great book on family honor
Mr. Radulovich is an inspiration on the value of family honor and loyality in our society.

Milo Radulovich an American Hero!
This is an awesome inspirational book! It's remarkable proof that one determined individual can make a difference and that "when you're right you have to stand up for yourself or you're dead". I plan on making sure my kids read and sharing with my friends.

Highly Recommended
I have been teaching ESL to Spanish speakers and Hebrew speakers for the past 3 years. My students love this book. The vocabulary points are clear and detailed. The exercises are directly relevant to all of the explanation. It is great for teachers in the classroom and for students who want to study on their own.

Exceptional, only by reading you'll believe it
Is an uncommon book that gives you an advanced introduction to most common vocabulary used among the students in North America, giving very good results for those who are learning the english as a second language to access college and studies purposes, enhancing the speech and personal vocabulary.

favoloso reference tool
This book may be designed for Italians learning English, but it's an amazing reference for advanced speakers of Italian as a foreign language. It is a combination of encyclopedia (arranged in conceptual, not alphabetical, order); thesaurus (thousands of words, with nuances explained in Italian, and illustrated in idiomatic Italian and English phrases); and picture dictionary (very practical themed sections - learn how to say "crochet hook" in Italian!). There are also highlighted boxes throughout the book containing idiomatic locutions in English, with Italian equivalents. The long final section of the book is devoted entirely to "communication" - complete phrases in English, with Italian equivalents. There is a complete index in the back. This is a true treasure chest for language lovers. It is like a thesaurus, but with each listing explained and illustrated. The nuances of meaning are impressively spot on. And the wealth of idiomatic expressions is invaluable.

The book's only flaw is that it is endlessly fascinating, and keeps me engrossed way past my bedtime! (Warning: the print size is rather fine.)

Amazing book
Being a history student I may be a bit prejudiced, but I loved this book. I've read countless history books and many of them are incredibly dry. This book was engaging and interesting. I highly recommend it for a crash course in Colorado history.

If you are serious about your English vocabulary buy it!
The book will help ESL students extend their vocabulary. The format is very efficient - even pages contain the material, odd pages contain the exercises. The book has 100 units and every unit explains a unique phenomenon of the English language. The Index encounters about three and a half thousand English words which for me is quite a lot. You will find six units on idioms, a unit on slang and much more. The book is for upper-intermediate and advanced students. If you are just a beginner, look for books with the same title for beginners or intermediate students.

The Frankfurt School: Its History, Theories, and Political Significance (Studies in Contemporary German Social Thought)

The definitive book on the theme (so far)
Wiggershouse provides, with depth and precision, a chronological account of the history of Institute of Social Research -"The Frankfurt School" - from its founding in 1924 to Adorno's death in 1969 (an Afterword briefly describes that happened to critical theory in Germany then after up to the mid 1980's). Appropriately, the book's emphasis is on the ideas of the Frankfurt School's theoreticians; the inclusion of factual episodes and brief biographies serve mainly to guide the reader through the convergences and divergences between the ideas moving around critical theory. Among the many virtues of the book, the attention given to lesser known theoreticians associated with the Institute, such as Friedrich Pollock, Franz Neumann, and Otto Kirchheimer, stand out. Another virtue is that there no attempt to elect "heroes" within this fascinating group of thinkers. Quite the contrary. Max Horkheimer, though depicted as a creative thinker, also emerges from Wiggershaus' book with dubious character. His claims in favor of an interdisciplinary research program contrast with his attitudes as the Institute's director that ended up expelling some of its most promising collaborators. The episode involving Habermas' exit from the Institute is exemplar of Horkheimer's rather intolerant personality. Theodor Adorno, described with all his intellectual brilliance, appears has the genius who voluntarily chose to stay under Horkheimer's shadow and who, at the heat of the student's movement in the 60's, took an "ivory tower" type of attitude. The book has only one noticeable flaw (if one can regard it as such). Though the emphasis on the ideas is what makes the book extremely interesting, Wiggershaus is not always successful in clarifying them. For instance, for readers not familiar with Adorno's aesthetics theory, Wiggershaus' presentation is not very useful as an introduction to this complex theory. Nevertheless, all in all, Wiggershaus' book is definitely "the" reference book for critical theory students.

A Touching Look At A Michigan Institution
As one of thousands of Michigander's who considered listening to JP synonymous with driving to work, I found the contents fascinating. Learning about his family background and the "story" behind many of his on air trevails that I heard live at the time brought back many fond memories. The touching commentaries and insights by his friends only serve to reinforce the fact that Detroit and the State of Michigan lost one of their treasures with his passing.

A great book to add to your collection
I haven't bought a book in a long time. But considering that I know one of the writers who wrote an essay in this book I wanted to purchase the book for personal enrichment. My initial thought was...who is Lord Charlemont. You can be sure you'll find out a lot of info about his life, and travels down to the kind of vases he collected. The book has some full color plates and the rest are in black and white. Not that that matters to me,I thought it was an excellent addition. Some books leave you with no visual help, making it hard to imagine what the writer is talking about. Lord Charlemont and his Circle is a great addition to a historian or art historians collection. I believe that this book, being very educational is only for serious historians considering that the vocabulary is very advanced. But then again, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to you.

INTELLECTUALLY LUCID
This tour de force historical perspective of nature leads the reader into a provocative search for understanding the human role on Earth. Not for the narrow-minded and/or Jerry Falwell.
