Conservative: Thorough, Scholarly, Yet Easily Understood
Good solid hermeneutics and clear presentation make this an ideal volume for the pastor, student, or serious layperson. MacArthur is not only an excellent Bible teacher, but he writes simply for popular use, yet nothing is water-down. This is a most thorough work, useful in preparing sermons, lessons, or personal growth. MacArthur interprets from a moderate dispensational viewpoint and seems to follow obejctive principle of interpretation. He brings in a generous amount of cultural and background information, as well as other Bible texts. I suggest you purchase the entire Matthew set. There is probably none finer.

Matthew : thy kingdom come
Published in Unknown Binding by Moody Press ()
Author: John F. Walvoord
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $9.95
Average review score:

Solid Comentary, But Brief
Walvoord interprets through a Premillennial, Pretribulational, Dispensational grid, and I personally appreciate this. This is a very solid work. It falls somewhere between a survey and thorough commentary. Although Walvoord leaves a lot of questions unanswered, he does establish and deal with the clear pattern of Matthew, the Kingdom offered, rejected, the mystery form of the kingdom and the church age announced, details of Christ's second coming, and then the commission to spread the gospel to all the world.

This will provide the Bible student with an understanding of Matthew's flow and answer many questions, especially reguarding eschatology. For the pastor who wants a thorough, verse by verse work, however, this volume would not be ideal.

Matthew Brady's Illustrated History of the Civil War

Matthew Brady's Illustrated History of the Civil War
This volume of Matthew Brady's Civil War photographs, history, and battlefield accounts is for the very serious Civil War historian. First published to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the great war, it was given as a gift to my Great-great grandfather, John T. Quick, by General Ulyssis S. Grant, in appreciation for his supply and management of horses and mules for his army throughout the war, particularly in Kentucky and Tennessee. My mother possesses this book, autographed by General Grant. It's value is undetermined. It's content is fascinating. It is probably the best and most accurate account of the Civil War, written as close to the time of the war as possible. It is my opinion that, like the history books of the Holocaust, Matthew Brady's Illustrated History of the Civil War should be included in every public and school library in our nation. The sobering photographs sear into one's mind, teaching us important lessons about man's inhumanity to man,.....the great tragedy of human conflict. Triumphantly, it leads one to further appreciate the sacrifices that were made to keep us as one nation. Once the reader opens this book, they will be hardpressed to put it down. Get a copy. Read it. Share it with your children, and teach them well. -- Mrs. Elizabeth J. Hansen, Hudson, OHio.

They're not just apostles!
I was attracted to this book in the library by the title. Not knowing what to expect I began reading it to my children. You may want to read it first before reading it to your children as I was a little startled by the frankness of the author regarding the shunning of Ameraisain children in their native culture. It is a very touching story of a Korean/ American boy who is abandoned by his mother because she is unable to raise him any more. It is the story of his fending for himself and the other boys he meets. A great gift for anyone adopting a child from another country.

A good guide through the Sermon on the Mount
I read an older edition of this book that was titled Christian counter culture, but I'm sure that the content is largely the same. John Stott shares his insights as he guides us through the Sermon on the Mount. He calls us to radical devotion to Christ and His principles outlined in this famous portion of Scripture. He gives good historical meanings of many of the words in Greek and unlocks his mainly orthodox interpretation of the passage. He also sites historical comments from Calvin, Tolstoy, and Bonhoeffer as well as others. Although this is not an exegetical commentary in the strictest sense, it is readable and quite insightful into Christ's words.

Excellent, Detailed, and Easy to understand...
I was already familiar with Data Warehousing before I bought this book. However, this book takes you step by step, in detail, through every step of the data warehousing process. The "tips" section throughout the text offer insightful clues for what to watch out for and help for a successful data warehouse project. I would recommed this book for the amatuer as well as the advanced reader.

PURITAN BOOKSHELF CD (Volume One) On the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
Published in CD-ROM by Still Waters Revival Books (03 April, 2001)
Authors: Puritan and Reformed Authors
Amazon base price: $19.95

A Rare Treat
The Puritan Bookshelf CDs are a wonderful collection of rare, out-of-print books which would cost a fortune even if one could spend the time searching for them in libraries and used bookstores in obscure places the world over.

Volume One contains twenty-two books, seventeen of which were written by Puritans and Covenanters of the 16th and 17th centuries.

From John Arrowsmith's extensive treatment of John 1:1-18, to John Trapp's phrase by phrase commentary on Matthew, this CD is a treasurehouse of knowledge from some of the best minds of the Reformation.

I especially appreciate William Gouge's convicting sermon in A Recovery From Apostacy, which concerns a certain contemporary prodigal son, and the subsequent receiving of this "penitent renegado" into the Church. He then makes an excellent, thorough application of Luke 15:31 to the church, and to believers individually.

I also appreciate Gouge's clear, simple writing style in his Exposition on the Whole Fifth Chapter of John, etc. Here he expounds on such varied topics as the flood (Gen. 7), marriage (Eph. 5), genuine salvation versus self-deception (Ps. 30), and putting on the whole armour of God (Eph. 6).

This is but a small taste of what is available on these CDs. Tremendous value and a wealth of wisdom and biblical instruction are packed into every CD. If you're interested in reformed theology, this is a great way to get an extensive library of books, lectures and sermons, for very little expense.

By the way, you can read a summary of the complete 32 CD set of Puritan Bookshelf CDs in one place online, at Still Waters Revival Books. SWRB also lists a similar set of 30 CDs in their Reformation Bookshelf CD series.

After bitter fighting, the moon had fallen
Thus begins John Matthew Faucette's second novel Siege
of Earth. In it, Earth has lost most most of its empire, and had been forced back to its own solar system. It's up to Admiral Dane Barclay, a pacifist, to rally what remains of Earth's forces to repulse the invading Spartans. We I don't
know how the war started since I didn't read the first book of
the series, which was called The Peacemakers. Does Dane
Barclay save the day? Does he save Earth? I'm not telling.
What I will tell you is that the commander of Sparta's navy, Admiral Shus Show, lectures his suborinate about human
treachery.
